No sound effects in New Super Marisa Land [Solved]
« on: February 15, 2014, 07:41:59 AM »
New Super Marisa Land plays perfectly fine for me, except that I can't hear the sound effects (SFX). I can hear the music (BGM), though.

Detailed symptoms:
I can hear the game's music. I cannot hear the game's sound effects.

However, I noticed that my speaker volume bar goes up when there are supposed to be sound effects. For example, when you start up the game, there is a splashscreen with a Twilight Frontier logo. At this point there is a sound effect (which I can't hear) and no music. The volume bar goes up during this splashscreen.

Specs:
OS - Windows 7 64-bit
Audio device - Realtek HD Audio
Laptop with Intel i7 2.4 GHz CPU, and 12 GB RAM

When it last worked:
When I was using my old laptop; both sound and music worked perfectly then. I'm fairly sure I haven't tried NSML on my current laptop until now. My old laptop is also Windows 7 64-bit, but a different laptop make/model, and much weaker specs.

What I've tried, in order:
- Updated DirectX 9.0c using an installer from Microsoft's website. DirectX 9.0c is a requirement listed on the tasofro website's NSML page.
- Updated my Realtek sound driver from Realtek's website
- Re-copied New Super Marisa Land over from my game disc, to make sure I didn't miss any files
- Used the DirectX installer from my game disc

I'm not sure what else to try at this point.

Other Touhou games I've tried:
SFX working: EoSD, PCB, IN, PoFV, StB, MoF
SFX not working: SWR 10.5, SWR 12.3, New Super Marisa Land

So it seems to be just the Twilight Frontier games, but not the ZUN ones. Not entirely sure if that's related, but it could be. Note that I haven't tried as hard for SWR, but I at least confirmed that the SFX bar in the in-game options was all the way up.

I'd really like to record some gameplay videos of NSML, but doing that without sound effects isn't ideal at all. Would really appreciate any help, thanks. I hope I didn't miss any obvious FAQs or threads that cover this problem.

So I was messing with my sound device's properties and configuration, while trying to get something else to work. Then I checked back to New Super Marisa Land, and sound effects were working all of a sudden...

I changed the device's properties back to what they were before (bit depth and sample rate, exclusive control, and priority to exclusive mode applications), and tried a couple of combinations/orderings of opening programs, and things still worked. So it probably wasn't the properties.

I can't tell for sure, but I think the fix was one of two things:

Possibility 1:
- Go to the Sound control panel, select your playback device, and click Configure. Go through the steps to auto-configure the device.

Possibility 2:
- Update the driver for your audio playback device.
- Go to the Sound control panel, select your playback device, and click Configure. Go through the steps to auto-configure the device.

I wish I could have determined the fix with more certainty, but oh well. Maybe by some chance, this might still help someone.
