I started playing FF XI (as a result of the steam sale)
some interesting points:
- The market contains no low level gear
- You must solo to lvl 99 (many months of pain) unless you can find a group (can do the whole thing in 1 day)
- As a beginer you have no money as most gil sinks are early game (maps how I hate thee); end game uses other currencies
- having to get to lvl 30 and then pull out tons of "I Stealth/Invisible through this lvl 75 area" cheese to get a real class (which you then need to start at lvl 1 with) is painful
- so is the subjob quest (although that's a major power spike to you)
- levelling mages solo is a nightmare having to grind against things on the threshold of not granting me exp (mobs like 10 levels bellow me)
A steam sale? Ugh, fair warning, SE is not trying to improve this game in the slightest anymore and they are actively making it worse with each update. I'm not trying to drive you away from the game or anything by saying that, but I think you should definitely know it. As long as you know what you're getting in to, well, good luck! I hope it's still enjoyable for you. XI had a great run, but it's going downhill fast now.
>Unfortunately the market has been this way for several years. I suppose that's probably the playerbase's fault, I can't blame SE for this one. But yeah, good luck finding equipment.
>And you still need to do the level cap quests at 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, and 95 even if you do manage to find a group who is willing to let you leech for free, which is very unlikely. I would spend most of my days helping out players with these specific quests. You'd be surprised how many people I helped out daily because
nobody else at all wanted to. It's a shame.
>Actually, you do use Gil forever, the other currencies are strictly for use with specific matching NPCs to get items or key items of some sort. Between players, Gil is the only real currency. (this is actually worse because Gil is arguable harder to come by than the other currencies)
>I know your pain. At least it's good practice though. Depending on how quickly you can learn the aggro system, you may end up finding sneak/invisible worthless at some point.
>Yeah, it's ridiculous how the subjob quests take two easy items and one from a far harder type of enemy that you definitely can't kill at Lv18 with the default 6 jobs.
>Where and at what level are you having problems with this? Perhaps I could recommend a better spot(s) for you. Solo fighting and EXP gain in general has been improved greatly over the years and I thought it was pretty easy to solo as mages compared to some other jobs.
