Vpatch bug? Suicidal vpatch.exe
« on: August 07, 2013, 12:06:55 PM »
Hello guys, I got this problem some months ago with Shoot the Bullet and today I got the same problem with Imperashable Night and UFO.

Well, it happens when I click to open the vpatch.exe in the game folder. Instead of opening the game, it shows a windows popup error saying that it can't find 'vpatch.exe', then the vpatch.exe that I double-clicked disappears from my folder.

I tried to open other .exe files to see if there is some virus in my computer but they open normally, except if they are the 'vpatch.exe'. If I try to open other vpatch.exe, it will show the same error and delete the *.exe.

Also I can't extract the vpatch.exe for while, when I extract all files from the Vpatch_pack.rar it extracts everything (txts and dlls) but it doesn't extract the vpatch executable. Later I'll try to restart the computer and see if this problem persists. Do you guys have seen something like this before?

Wow that's really weird, really seems like a virus.

-Try renaming vpatch.exe into something else?
-Try marking it as Read-Only (although I doubt the supposed "virus" would obey it :V)

Otherwise, try restarting your computer, although it would be more likely to fix if it was actually a R/W problem.

It sounds more like your ANTI-virus suddenly decided it doesn't like the way vpatch works and deletes it on sight without so much as bothering to ask or even notify you. That's how antivirus software usually works (check file on running and on creating) and I heard such patches trip it on occasion unless you put them in exceptions.

I'm on the same track as C.Angel. Having it be deleted when running is odd, but if it isn't extracting from an archive (well, it's extracted then deleted) then it's likely a prevention rather than an exploit.

Try this one, and temporarily disable your antivirus: http://www.mediafire.com/?n7va6o67cyamani
(also tell us what antivirus you use, because I haven't heard of this happening before)

You guys are right, the culprit is the AVAST anti-virus. To solve this problem I did the following steps:

1- Updated the antivirus definitions and the program;
2- Turned off the Silent mode (to let it show the messages);
3- Restored the vpatch.exe from the Quarantine (the anti-virus was sending the file to there without asking anything because of [2] );

Strangely after doing this when I try to open the vpatch.exe it runs fine without asking anything. Maybe it was the anti-virus version or not, idk.
I sent the vpatch.exe as a false positive to the Avast team, lets see if they will do something about it. Thanks for all guys ;)

Haha. Either it's way too intrusive, or it doesn't notify you AT ALL and just deletes whatever the hell it wants. Fukken brilliant.
