Hm, well, if Free! is getting this kind of press around here, I might have to check that out, too.

Oh yeah. I haven't watched Free! yet, but the stuff going around tumblr is fantastic, full of dudes going THIS ANIME IS AWFUL AND OBJECTIFYING TO MEN AND YOU GIRLS SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR ACTING LIKE THAT

And everyone else is just loving the irony of the matter.

Err, putting hilarious tantrums aside, is Free! actually good?

I'm kind of afraid to check myself.

The reverse is also hilarious, as I have seen many "feminists" who are staunchly against female-fanservicey shows express their undying love for the impossibly toned musculatures of the guys in Free!.

I think the moral of the story is everyone should just calm down and enjoy when a show is pandering to you, and not be offended when something you dislike appears in your peripheral internet vision.

Err, putting hilarious tantrums aside, is Free! actually good?

Free - Probably kyo-ani's least competent adaptation so far, or maybe the source material is to blame.  Either way, their animation and storyboarding isn't up to their usual standards here, the writing's not very good, the plot is bog-standard shounen sports manga (although the source is a novel iirc), the seiyuu seem to have phoned it in with one or two exceptions, but look at all that rippling man-meat!

This is the first anime season I've been really interested in since last fall's. So, my opinions:

Free!- I like it. Kyoani never fails to deliver in the animation department.

Dangan Ronpa- As a big fan of the game (which I am familiar with though the LP), I don't thing the adaptation is particularly good. Also, the show looks rather low budget. Good news though: the game has been localized for the PS Vita and is set to release in the UK and the US early next year. Those who are interested in the story might want to hold off and wait to play the game, which will most certainly be a better experience than watching the anime.

Kiniro Mosaic- It's cute, and the animation is surprisingly fluid. However, it just seems like a fluffy, no substance kind of show, which isn't really what I want to watch.

Uchouten Kazoku- Those ears...why? I stopped watching about halfway through the episode; it wasn't really catching my attention.

Monogatari 2nd Season- Good old Monogatari is back. I'm happy to see that the animation is much better than that in Nekomongatari.

Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai S3- It'll be nice seeing the goddess arc animated. I'm just glad that this series is getting a 3rd season in the first place.

Watamote- Wow, awkward. I might or might not continue watching.

Regardless, it's the backlash that really makes the show for me. It's by no means a good show, but it's cute. And because this is modern anime, that's all that really matters.

Not only you find Watamote's OP not gloriously good but you also skip OPs?

I skip most OPs, yes. Because they're usually as cookie-cutter and boring as most anime. But like anime, when you find one you like, it's an amazing experience.

The OPs for Soremachi, Fractale, Haruhi, and numerous others are all amazing. Watamote's has pseudo-screamo vocals, a washed out guitar, flat, dead drumming and ridiculous lyrics.

It's at least sort of plausible.

As opposed to anime's seemingly-endless supply of little girls with an extra chromosome. There must be something in the water.

Edit: So what's yet to air this season?

-Kimi no Iru Machi (basically the worst romance manga of all time, pass)
-Neptune the Animation (if you know what this is at all you're probably watching it, though I wouldn't exactly expect much since it'll have no budget)
-Silver Spoon (haven't read it, but it's a farm school comedy by the FMA mangaka that is apparently similar to Moyashimon)
-Gatchaman Crowds (god damn this has fantastic designs, I hope it's good)

At this point I am watching Free! because Kyo ani's fujoshi bait, and it tingles me senses, Highschool DxD is just saved for later for those mind empty moments, Dangan Ronpa because it looks great to me because I haven't played the damn game everyone is talking about or is about to, but to be fair Dangan Ronpa feels a bit like BTOOOM, I think survival games stories can only go so far but I hope it proves me wrong.

Something something about a bunch of girls playing BB guns and war games... not sure if want.
> lack of a decent Mecha anime to fill my void after space vampires...
> nothing else is worth looking at.
I don't usually say such things for a season but apparently it feels like that.

How this season is gonna go for you as the viewer of good and tasteful shows:
1. DON'T LISTEN TO NO ONE TELLING YOU A SHOW IS NO GOOD
2. I WATCH WHATEVER I WANT
3. AND I AM NOT ASHAMED OF IT.

the fact is, I really really enjoyed Free! first episode, and I am sorry to say there is hardly something Kyo Ani on offer prior to this after K-On ended with me in pool deep of tears.

The "backlash" to Free is really being blown out of proportion. The core anime audience doesn't have a problem with it; as I said, even /a/ likes it.

I think when you think about it, it is not just Americans watching anime here, think of people around me who have been up till recently fairly comfortable closet gay is the only way to go and if you are a guy watching a show about half naked men you are a confirmed gay yourself... and you see what I mean.

pretty sure the wholesome official ground is girls read girls manga, and boys is DBZ forever. Sad, but true.

Also, a lot of this drama is, as often, different from place to place. Tumblr is MRA-tastic.

Yeah. I've personally seen somewhere between a fucktillion and a shitzillion examples of people going "LOLOL MALE TEARS!!!! SUCK IT OTAKU!!!!" and exactly zero examples of people actually complaining that the show objectifies dudes or is too gay or whatever. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?

I suspect it exists but in far fewer numbers than those who want to make fun of such people believe, which is why your experience has worked out the way it has.

One of the things about long-lasting oppression is that it's very easy for a number of the oppressed that are true believers to lose sight of what's really important. Once the shoe is on the other foot, they may not remember how to act properly, and this sort of thing is the end result.

I'm only watching Free! at the moment and, I'll admit it's kinda bland, but I just love how much it's pissing people off.

Fujoshis are basking in your moeblob tears and boy oh boy does it feel great.
If anything, they are tears of joy because that show is completely bombing in sales.

All I'm watching are monogatari and kami nomi.

Curiously enough, the only place I've seen that is from a lady friend on Facebook.

I haven't decided what to watch yet this season because I haven't finished the shows I was watching last season. I want to check out Watamote, despite the bad reviews in the thread, and the new monogatari for sure.

Called it. I'm sure I'm far from the only one though.

This show puts so much effort into its gags but almost none of them are funny :(

Also:

-Silver Spoon (haven't read it, but it's a farm school comedy by the FMA mangaka that is apparently similar to Moyashimon)

This description was accurate

It's not as good as moyashimon from ep 1 but it's still pretty entertaining.
