Well, yesterday I improved my Ape Escape time attacks by upwards of 20 seconds across all of them...
First was a random play of Sushi Temple where I improved my 20.47 to 20.28. Nothing to write home about. After that I improved my Fossil Field from 11.92 to 8.47 (I think it was 8.47, it was somewhere around that). Not a record, but got it pretty close. Then I randomly in 5 minutes improved Molten Lava, taking my own 17.70 down to 10.78, which beat SSBMstuff's old record of 12.05. It was a bad run and I wasn't recording, since I definitely didn't expect to get the record!
From there, zorasknight, playing on emulator, got a 3.16 opening to City Park. I didn't believe it was possible and suspected the emulator was doing something wrong. A while later he finished a 3.20 run and I improved my 3.23 to a 3.21...but something still felt off. How was 3.16 possible? The only difference was emulator, and I'd known lag was emulated wrong in other places...maybe the game was lagging imperceptibly during the opening? I wondered how I could possibly test it, and then I remember what Surreal does in various parts of AE3. Using a claw grip to hold up on the dpad angling the camera downwards, I tried it. My first attempt was a 3.16. I kept going for another 5 minutes and ended up knocking off 0.13 from the old record, with a
3.10. With this new discovery of lag reduction, I went on to Crumbling Castle, figuring it could be improved with the new technique. 5 minutes later, 1.74 had been replaced with a
1.70 run. Probably still improvable, but it was an improvement. From there, I suspected that Thick Jungle was still improvable, saw and choked a 2.69, got a 2.70 (improved from 2.72), kept going for 2.69, managed an incredibly badly played 2.65 within 15 minutes. I then spent the next 2 hours trying to get a better played 2.65, culminating in a much better played run. The time of this run?
2.63. That frame of improvement was totally worth it.
From there, I knew I could improve my time on Molten Lava and began focusing on that. I managed a 9.08 before long, with a missed second. Likewise with an 8.89 and 8.75. Finally, I managed to get a run without any missed seconds...but the ending could still be improved. Regardless, I pulled off a
7.50 run, and Molten Lava quickly became one of my favorite time attacks to play. I wasn't done for the night. It might have been 7 in the morning and I might have been grinding these since 11 or 12 or night, but I had one level left to go. I had to improve Fossil Field. Within 10 minutes I had taken the record from SSBMstuff with a 7.84...but I had done it by a single frame, as his time was 7.85. My run was improvable, though, and 20 minutes later I had this
7.57 completed. As a result of this night my personal total dropped to 2:35.xx and the WR total dropped to 2:22.71. I think I can push it to sub 2:15, but getting past 2:20 is going to be really hard...
