Touhou server
« on: July 09, 2012, 05:14:35 PM »
Hello everyone.

I've got the idea of making a fan-based Gensokyo server, using the Ragnarok online/eAthena server platform. The Ragnarok game in combination with eAthena server software is to my opinion very well suited to make a Gensokyo world. I have the idea that people are begging for a good game which is going more in-dept about the fictional world 'Gensokyo'.
What i have in mind is a game, where people can pick as human a class such as 'Shrine-maiden', (gate)Guardian, Knife-thrower, 'Medician', 'Ordinary Witch', and much more, which resemble a lot like our favorite heroines from Touhou. People would be able as these classes to discover and enjoy adventures in Gensokyo, and find out how the various areas in gensokyo really look like in a 3-d envrionment. There will be a part in the server where people can enjoy role-playing, and follow/read stories and quests scripted by fans. People can communicate with each other, and people can hunt sprites, monsters and evil, powerful bosses in gensokyo. As the server develop, people can also enjoy a (restricted, so just at certain places) PvP part, and it is possible that 'incidents' will happen, such as monster invasions or even wars. (scripts to do this are already present in eAthena software)

The parts where people can create/edit content for are:
- 3d maps (which makes the realm Gensokyo)
- playable characters/jobs.
- NPC's. These allow players to do certain things such as selling/buying items, quests, but are also highly use-able for stories/role-playing parts. The Ragnarok engine allow also using additional images inside the game, and more advanced options, if the scripter wish so.
- Items. (part of the game)
- Monsters. This are by ragnarok the things players need to hunt. In Gensokyo they should be fairies, but can appear as anything you want.
- Music and sounds. Changing this is perhaps the most easy part.
- Loading screens, items, and much more.

To give you a impression what Ragnarok online looks like, I've add here some screenshots about the individual graphics Ragnarok is capable of. For each of these graphics there are tools available to modify them in a most doable way:

3-d world inside Ragnarok:
Someone made a 3-d editor, which allows people to build maps from scratch.(or edit existing ones in the game) The content available to build up Gensokyo is in fact enormous, and ready for use. The tools to create these maps combine moderately easy usage with a pretty good visual display. It do takes quite some time to build a quality map, but this part of the project is not to be done by just one mapper. Just search out for Ragnarok, and you will find out that forests, dungeons, houses, everything is possible by the editor and Ragnarok itself.

Player sprites as used by Ragnarok:
Aside from the sprites, everything else inside the software is also editable without the need of programming. Skills, stats, what weapons to use, special properties. So it is fully customizable what the 'shrine-maiden' or the 'guardian' class is capable of. The server allows full customizing to what items every class can use.

NPC sprites as used by Ragnarok:
Linked to the NPC sprite is also a script inside the server which contain the option/quest/story the NPC have to offer. This way you can use NPC's to fill up villages and offer people way's to get the gensokyo feeling by following a story.

Monster sprites as used by Ragnarok:
- Shown here is a typical sprite sheet with the kind of sprites used in the game. It is possible to add new monster, and fully customize their behavior. Some parts of Gensokyo are dangerous to humans after all, and you should only go there, if you are well prepared. Monster can also appear as part of an story. Think about a quest, venturing out to the Scarlet Devil Mansion, or Former Hell. Guess who lives there, and don't like to be disturbed?  8)

In fact, all parts of ragnarok are customizeable/replaceable in some way.

------------------------------------------------------

My question here is: Do people have interest for such a server where players can play in Gensokyo, and take jobs resembling known characters from the Touhou game?

Do know, there are a lot of conditions which need to be fullfilled in order to have a pleasing and eye-catching Gensokyo. This is a matter of the amount of love put in the project. I need people who are willing to make maps, sprites who are willing to make good looking sprites for monsters and the player characters, and scripters who like to fill Gensokyo with NPC's for the stories and history of the land. In short, i want this to be a fan-based project where everyone from the community is able to add something in it. Think of it as a sort of wikipedia project, where everyone can edit parts, but then as a playable server.(there is of course an experienced staff who keep an eye on effects of mods on the gameplay ingame) Do realize, we are talking about a project which may take months to release, and years to slowly develop, as Gensokyo will continue to grow as the server makes progress in time, and people keep adding content in the server. I am now just looking out if there is interest in such a project.

Is the fan-base of Touhou big enough for a Touhou server? I look forward to people their reactions.
Tell me also here if you are more then just interested, and actually like to work on a part of the server. Because i definitely would need people who create sprites for the playable character and monsters, and maps to create Gensokyo.

With kind regards,
Nithalm

If I was any bit skilled at creating stuff for this, I'd be involved.
But I'll just have to settle for supporting this with words. So long as there's a class modeled after Remi, I'd play the shit out of this.
I think Momiji would work for the Crusader. They both tend towards using Sword+Shield after all.

Please please please. Its a tall order, but this would be awesome. and sort of shocking how no one has done this idea yet.

You should've thought of something like this before RUNE shut down. Decent RO spriters these days are very, very rare, and there's not a whole lot of coders left in the community that are still in the business or are not completely corrupt in some way. Also, you can apply Touhou to almost any half decent MMO game out there.

That being said, it's not like I haven't thought about putting Touhou into the RO world, but at the same time, my last few experiences dealing with an RO server as a player and as a GM/admin tell me that something is probably going to go wrong without the proper support.

I do have interest in doing something for this server, either do a bit of work myself or bring a few trusted coders I know who still do a bit of RO coding (all the spriters I know don't play RO anymore), but I'd first like to know if you have a solid plan regarding beta testing/server support/etc. or if you've actually successfully managed an RO server before, because it is truly hard work and I've seen way too many people give up and have the server die off. Of course, this is after you decide whether or not to go foward with this.

After playing RO for nearly a decade and ridding myself of it over 2 years ago, I still find myself reminiscing about my time there. By all means, I would love to see this come to fruition.

You seem to know what having a server is meaning Syanas. To answer your question. Yes, i have had myself a server before.

Im still in the stage of researching and thinking over if there is enough interest in a touhou server, as i am aiming for touhou players, and not Ragnarok players. We are also basically making a new game here, with touhou mobs and characters. If i would continue with this, then money is no problem, and i am well aware that the minimum for starting up is 6 months.(getting ready enough to present the players a few playable classes and a few playable gensokyo maps)
The choice for Ragnarok online, is partly because i know Ragnarok, but also partly because it is the most customizeable engine avalable. But correct me if i see this wrong.  :3

The reason to make this server is a wish to give a shape to what we think Gensokyo should look like. As i hope people will offer their help, they can also have a hand in deciding how Gensokyo will start to look.

As far as customization and being able to build maps and sprites from scratch, Ragnarok probably has the most widely available tools for the job. I once tried doing the same for Emil Chronicles Online (pretty much the same game as Ragnarok, except more 3D), but most of the tools for the game are still being held by the official game makers.

The main issue is going to be the character sprites, which are going to require anywhere from 100-120 frames each. If you intend on replacing every single class currently in the game, that's going to be a major undertaking. If you plan on creating entirely new classes specific for Touhou, that's going to depend on how many classes there's going to be. Monster sprites are particularly easier to make, but still require around 40-60 frames each. And as far as attack effects go, I don't think I've ever seen a custom one.

Map creation is something I've never done in practice, but after seeing a lot of custom maps, it would probably take much less effort to create the map's design, then to make it a usable region for the game.

I think I have an idea for a few classes.
Just make the basic classes generic youkai types, and have them promote into something more like the Touhou they represent.

Vampire - Replaces Archer
Promotes to - Destroyer, Fateweaver

Tengu - Replaces Thief
Promotes to - Wolfguard, Crowlord

Magician - Nobrainer
Promotes to - Elementalist, Dollmaker, Ordinary Mage

Disciple - Replaces Acolyte
Promotes to - Devotee, Legend
(This one's for all the Byakuren fans.)

And so on. Shame I can't really contribute frames or art or anything though. I can barely even make halfway decent stuff in Paint.

Talked with a friend, and I'm keen on implementing an idea I originally had for ECO into this possible server. It's very complicated in terms of coding, but I believe it would provide the best sort of community based feel that you want to have for the server. If you're interested, we can discuss.

We also agree that RO is probably the best engine to work with short of anything else that is fully open sourced and customizable with all the available tools. As for the fanbase, you should try reaching out to other communities as well, including the JP fanbase. The more support you have, the better.

Looks like a good idea, but I have never done spriting, so no real technical help. I can only post ideas.

I sort of discarded the idea.
I think there is not enough interest in a Touhou server and the community is possible not big enough.
