TIME OFF GET! I've secured the Thursday and Friday of Otakon weekend. Work's nice and flexible in terms of working hours, too, so I might just pack in some extra time on Monday and Tuesday and have a heaping helping of the afternoon off for prep time on Wednesday.

If all else fails, could do a genderbent L, right? =D 's about as simple and budget-friendly as anything I can think of. Or find someone who wears some sort of cloak or something and just keep it closed the whole time. (Good luck in the heat though if you do that...Bleh.)

I'm making the long trip from Arkansas up to Baltimore by myself. Never been to a con so I hope I'm very overwhelmed, sore, and broke by the end of the weekend, that how I'll know it was a good one. Hopefully I'll run into some of you there. Pretty sure I don't have time for a costume, I didn't know I could go until about 2 weeks ago and have been swamped with class.

Any good advice? I do the music festival thing a lot so I'm not bad at navigating and planning for large events like this but I've never gone to something like that by myself, should make it that much more interesting. I've always subscribed to the idea that the best way to get the whole experience of events like this is to go either alone or with a smaller group so you can do what you want and aren't just hanging out within your little group.

I haven't been this excited about an event in a long time.

Do you have a smartphone (android/ios)? There will be a Guidebook app available that will make planning your convention stops infinitely easier.

If you have some sewing ability there's a whole bunch you can cobble together with help from Goodwill.

Not really. >: I've always used sewing glue for stuff especially detailing and whatnot. I have sewn a few things together by hand for cosplay but it rarely holds for more than one con. OTL

Though I can probably nag Jan to take me to a thrift store and try to figure something out...

I'm reminded that I did Lain once for a Halloween party fairly easily. Thrift store cosplay is the best! So, that might be a thought. It involved no sewing but I got lucky that someone had a similar jacket to what I needed.

Thanks for the advice guys. Edible I do have a smartphone and I'm absolutely going to get the Guidebook, I would be so lost without that. Also your avatar is mesmerizing.

I'll stop by the photo shoots for sure. I'd like to meet a bunch of you guys and girls and I saw earlier in the thread about wearing a name tag with my username on it, great idea. I'm going to be totally lost I'm sure so I'll need all the help I can get.

Reading more through this thread, I almost feel I need to do some Brohou cosplay. I'm not sure when I'll be able to go to my next con, I'll be in Japan for the next Otakon, so I want to go all out this time. I'm thinking Mokou since it seem easy enough, wouldn't be too hot, and my mom has offered to help me put it together since I can't sew well. My mom doesn't care that I'm thinking about doing a female cosplay but my dad feels weird about it, I can see why though. I was thinking about making something I could hold in my hand and paint it to look like flames, I'm a decent painter. I'm not sure sure what material would be best for this.

So excited! 16 more days!!

Yah Mokou's an easy one to Brohou. It is disgustingly hot and humid in Baltimore so I second a lightweight fabric (though that sure doesn't stop a lot of us)

I grew up in West Texas and Live in Arkansas so I'm pretty used to hot weather. I'm going to get to work on the costume this weekend.
