[Music] Yay, Chiptune
« on: January 09, 2012, 09:02:48 AM »
Okay, here's my story:
I was bored.
Now we have chiptune Touhou music.

Links:
Voile, the Magic Library
Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke
A Maiden's Illusionary Funeral ~ Necro-Fantasy

Planned:
Voyage 1970
Wind God Girl (short)
Iunno (requests?)

That's... about it. Rather empty-looking, isn't it?

I'm going to guess FamiTracker, a SF2 of NES sounds, or GSXCC, and converted MIDI versions (going by pitches).

In either case, it seems there's too much polyphony IMO for it to be really considered an actual chiptune. Assuming NES hardware, too many channels play at once, no DPCM was used (though it isn't necessary for good percussion as proven by Tim Follin)...could be improved, definitely. The rest of it is OK.

In some of the vids you mentioned the use of sine waves. Really those are triangle waves - sines are much more commonly used in FM synthesis (another beast altogether).

I think Komissar is the best one to contact here, as he leans heavily with chiptune business (see his LSDJ version of Bad Apple on an actual Gameboy) amongst us musician types here.

Ah, did I say sine? I meant square.

Anyhow, those first three are just me screwing around. I plan on getting serous when I obtain some sort of method of using my Commodore 64 for future songs.
And, oh boy, when I do...
Ah, it won't be just me having fun.

Oh man, you plan on using a C64 for future works? I love the sound of the SID chip (even though the computer's a bit older than I am :V), and emulated versions just don't cut the dice for that system IMO, so I really look forward to that.

I suggest looking for tracker programs that can run on the actual unit.

Why do I suddenly want one of these and a C64 now? :V (along with a Yamaha PLG150-DX or FS1R and a Roland D-50)

All that's on hold, though. I still need to find/have my father make a power supply. (5V DC, 9V AC, was it?)
In the mean time, I suppose I'll work on that WGG. I figure I still need to get used to balancing channels.

Unrelated Edit: Yay, this was my tenth post. Just thought I'd point that out.

Double post. Disregard this.
"Quote" and "Modify" are really close together, aren't they?

I just searched the forum to find where I can post my music... look, there is a thread about chiptunes!

It's nice to see another fan of chiptunes on this board. I am glad to see someone producing them as well. However, I think you can take your songwriting a bit further. These chiptunes sound quite basic. What tracker are you using to make these?

I think your chiptunes could be improved with more knowledge of volume envelopes and pattern commands like vibrato, pitch up/down & such. Also using one channel for PCM is okay... you're not Tim Follin, I aint gonna hate :)

I would love to hear SID styled touhou! East meets west for sure, haha.

you rang?

Your stuff does a good job at capturing the raw sound of 8bit chip sounds. Could use a little original flair though . You don't need to strictly follow what the song structure has to offer. Nuances are probably your most powerful weapon when composing with 4 channels on chip hardware.

omigosh...chiptunes!

I host a live weekly radio show that plays nothing but chiptunes.  It'd be nice to have some Touhou music to add to the collection.  Currently I have...one?!  Either way if any of you have some polished touhou chiptune music to show off, please drop me a message and a link. :)
