Favorite Sub Group?
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:14:32 PM »
Quote
Tengukami: Nichijou 17 will probably be remembered as having one of the best sequences in recent memory: the house of cards.

Vic Viper: I just wait for Commie's every week, so I'm always late in watching Nichijou :<

Tengukami: You actually have preferred subbers? Damn. I just wait for the first 720p release and go with that!

Vic Viper: oh god yes, I'm super OCD about that kind of thing. If a group drops a show sometimes I'm hesitant to go find another group because things won't be the same. I always do though because I hate dropping shows more.

Tengukami: I notice the subgroups that appear most frequently in my collection are Commie, Horrible Subs, and gg. I don't speak Japanese so I don't know how accurate they are, but they're readable, and offer explanations when needed. Either Oyasumi or gg were the ones who made the PDF file of references in Pani Poni Dash, for example.

loopshare: I thought most people had preferred subbing groups?

Tengukami: I guess most people do! Maybe I ought to ask around.

So that's what I'm doing.

Tell me: what are your favorite subgroups and why? That last bit is important: I don't want this thread to be a list of different subgroups. What I'm asking for is why you like your favorite subgroups - what makes them superior? Would you stop watching a series if they dropped it? Any subgroups that come in second, or third place?

Bring it.

I'm somewhat partial to Nutbladder since a very close friend of mine is one of their editors, but I'm getting WhyNot's Nyanpire subs this season because Nutbladder's just read funny :|

gg is my current favorite since they're quite fast and usually have excellent quality.  They were the ones with the extensive translator notes for Pani Poni Dash and Ayakashi.

Far as dead groups go I liked Triad, Static and AnimeHaven (but only because they did Galaxy Angel)

I rarely watch subs, but I have to vouch that gg does put out decent subs, and quite frankly, koda is an awesome person, when I first encountered her I did not know at all she was one of the up-there-gals of gg! It was quite surprising, and she's fun to talk to, haha.

koda is amazing, I remember talking to her way back when Highschool of the Dead was still a recent showing, regarding the desperation of many users for it to be translated, it was funny!

I've been partial to gg for quite a few years since they were one of the few groups taking up Zetsubou-sensei at the time (and if you've seen the series, you know how much of a bitch it is to translate). I generally don't have a "preference" for subbing groups, though, I just usually go with what's available at the time (I do not recommend ColorMeSubbed, though, their PSG encodes were just awful)

I should point out that a.f.k. subs was like everyone's favorite 5 years ago for doing Lucky Star, Haruhi and the first season of Zetsubou Sensei.  Then he became everyone's least favorite after randomly disappearing after releasing 4 episodes of the second season of Zetsubou Sensei :V

Wasn't either Kilga or Kefit (I forgot who) part of Nutbladder? I remember seeing one of thier names in the OP of Hidamari.

I always wondered what happened to a.f.k :/

I prefer gg. I don't need to worry about them dropping because I never seem to be watching the shows they drop anyway.

I think that was Letty actually.

Actually turns out it was all three :V The group wasn't Nutbladder, it was Shintani. Letty did quality check and distro, Kilga did editing and typesetting, and Kefit is listed under Special Thanks :V

Actually you're close but not quite!

Kefit and Kilga were indeed members of Shintani, but Letty was not. However, a mutual friend of ours (and site lurker) Revolver Koala was a QCer.

Real life happened I believe.  He came back to try and sub season 2 of Haruhi, but it was still releasing in 704x400 hardsubbed XviDs which no one wanted anymore.

I have a small gripe with FFFPeeps for what they did with Ika Musume. Most of the time the English flowed well - have to take their word for it on the translation itself - but they'd throw in stuff like "come at me, bro" that made me wonder if they were, like, translating the Japanese equivalent of a verbal meme meaning "I challenge you to attack", or if they were just tossing in English ones for the hell of it.

Indeed they are!  Considering that Letty hasn't actually seen Hidasketch though should speak about how much involvement he had with Shintani

Favorite? mine, of course.
Shameless self-advertising aside, I was a fan of Eclipse when they were still going. They always had the goods when it came to quality. gg is fun to follow; they're fast and they don't make too many errors. I never noticed them, anyway.

gg subs definitely. The quality is lovely, especially compared to other sub groups. That, and every other HOTD sub just seemed terrible compared to theirs.
Underwater is also wonderful, just as good if not better quality compared to gg.

If so, that's rather funny. The sub quality and the rip qualities are amazing (especially compared to the day1 720p releases from HorribleSubs).

The rationale behind it was that koda really hated the premise and feel of HOTD, and didn't want to touch it as a result. It was only after people offered to pay her money that she decided to bite, if I recall what she told me correctly

gg is hilarious, because they're just a collective that gets all sorts of people, and, in the case of Madoka, their TL suffers badly at the hands of random guys who fail at TLing. They switched people halfway through the series, and it shows.

Also, Mazui > everyone, really.

I believe gg pump out really good subs for the Gundam series, and that is why I like them.

when it comes down to ecchi fanfare, Doki takes the cake and eats it.

and in all other times, I don't really care. My favorite translator for H-manga has to be CGRascal (and I dunno since his blog was taken down where can I find him anymore beside GE) moe-harem stuff? I prefer UTW. Unlimited Translation works.

As for the core of best translation ever done with the most homework ever poured in, I think Eclipse was hands down the winner, it is sad but I don't think they do subs anymore.

and before I go.

DOWN WITH THE CRUNCHYROLL.

What's wrong with Crunchyroll? That was my go-to site for watching Rio Rainbow Gate when badly hungover.

Because they aren't fansubbers they've sold out and as a result their subs are subpar and shitty I believe is the current line?  I never bothered with CR because 1) I didn't like the idea of having to wait a week to see a show I really cared about and 2) I like to archive everything i've seen in case I want to watch it again or give to someone else.

It should be noted that Horriblesubs is ONLY stream rips and they don't sub anything themselves.

Both understandable, and probably why RRG was the only show I watched on that site. And, I'm not hungover often, so the lateness wasn't a concern.

Another good hangover anime is Working!!

That is good to know. Who (is)are the original subgroup(s)?

The original subbers are the groups that licensed the shows, meaning the translators working at Crunchyroll or FUNimation.
