RaNGE Common Project idea : Spell Practice
« on: July 05, 2011, 06:24:34 PM »
I'm just throwing off an idea I had recently while doing some Koishi battle.

Most of the main Touhou games do not have the Th8/13 Spell Practice feature. Yet it would be so useful to train for these pesky spells that you can't reach except after 5 minutes of stage and other spells.

So the idea would be to reproduce the spells of EoSD, MoF, SA and UFO, any difficulty, using Danmakufu (mainly the patterns) and keep all of the links here.

This is a huge project by itself, but if people put some random spell here once in a while, we could be build something, I think. And this topic can help for coordination. Whenever you're motivated for something, just tell us about it so that we don't do it twice !

Well for now I'll be gathering your opinions since I also have two other projects, but I intend to start by SA Stage1 spells.

I like the idea, and i look forward to seeing attempts at recreating spell cards, even though it's mainly impossible to get them exactly alike.

Even though you could grasp certain key concepts of the spells, playing them in DNH even after "replicating" them isn't a very accurate training method. To boot, I don't like Spell Practice to begin with.

I don't believe it impossible to replicate exactly a spellcard, through little corrections. If we do this as a common project and someone has some difficuly with a detail, someone else could finish that.

Count me in, as I'm too good at replicating spell cards... or at least giving the idea of it.

Make more original content, the most boring dnh scripts in existence are all those scripts that just copy ZUN cards.

This would be in no way a priority. I still have a Three Fairies, a Marisa and a Kyouko scripts to be done.

I was just putting this idea there because I didn't feel it would be useless... I don't expect this to be finished in a year anyway, but whenever someone is bored and can contribute, there'd better be a place here than in his/her folder, waiting to be deleted.

Well throwing in an idea and saying like : "I cannot work on this, got my own projects" isn't really motivating anybody to pick this up. Projects don't work that way. They need a leader, not someone who shoves it away and says like "feel free to contribute".

Realistically, getting your spell practise project to be even done is VAST amount of work. There are not many people who can closely copy ZUN cards around in our community. Then we got the danmakufu engine limitations where some things just don't work or need a major work around. You speak of "doesn't need to be done within a year". Even after 5 years, you won't be done with this project.

Successful projects require more than just a fancy idea. This is why a majority of them fail.

Characters, bombs and some other game mechanics would have to be replicated too for Spell Practice purpose. Maybe it is possible to make a spell practice patch for the games instead of replicating almost everything.

It would be pretty fun just to replicate spellcards to see how well are you able to do that though.

well good idea on paper, but let me point out that one common RaNGE project we did a year ago.
Danmaku Viewing Trip? yeah, crashed and burned, nobody did anything. even if the management was bad i dont feel like it will be different for this project.

I think "nobody did anything" is kind of an understatement... I mean sure, most of us didn't get anything done, but there were some who actually bothered doing some things for the project... (though yeah, complete crash and burn)

It seems we didn't actually try.

Well, actually, I tried but failed.
