First topic, I'm pretty nervous. :ohdear:
Hi all, I've built a couple of models and I'd like to share them with everyone. I can't draw the type of beautiful fanart in this forum if my life depended on it, so I guess this will have to do. I'm also not a professional modeller so expect below-average work. :ohdear:
First is a F-22 Raptor with Aya Shameimaru markings. Like Aya, the Raptor is super fast and super agile.

Next is a Rafale with Sanae Kochiya markings. Rafale means squall in French, and Sanae is a Wind Priestess, so....

I hope to build more Touhou-related models and share them here, and hopefully become a better modeller over time. Thanks for taking the time to look at my topic, and I look forward to getting along with everyone.
For those interested in the details:

Neat models and decals!
I would have seen Aya on a spy plane such as a Blackbird, though, since it's for recce missions and picture-snapping.
And now to find one that will fit the Sukhoi.....
-
I agree that Aya would be best for the SR-71
if not, then I'd suggest Utsuho, since she's also a "black bird" and the SR-71 is one of those icons of the Cold War and early Atomic Age
-
I guess you're right about the Aya/SR-71 thing, but I don't have enough space to display one. :( I'll keep the Utsuho Blackbird in mind if I ever get the decals, kit and display space for one.
What other planes do you think would make a good fit for the rest of the characters?

...agh, can't remember planes too well...better look at my dad's collection of model fighters....
I'll say that Reimu seems best on a smaller jet due to her small hitbox..

As soon as I read that, my mind instantly replied "F-16" :V
I think I have an idea for my next Touhou model.
-
Now, there is another thread I would love to follow. Here are my suggestions:
PAK-FA: I don't know whether there is a model out there for it. If you could get one, give some consideration to Marisa to match F-22 with Aya
F6F 'Hellcat': Orin would do fine. She's a cat from hell and is a pain in the ass to beat. I think that would go nicely together
F-104 'Starfighter': Cirno hands down. Cheers to the greatest widow-maker and fool's plane in the history of aviation.
Northrop Grumman EA-6B 'Prowler' : Satori would fit in nicely considering all its electronic jamming and stuff. Quite traumatizing to modern fighter jets.
Bf-109 or F-16: Small and agile, perfect for Reimu. Plus Bf-109G was the plane for Erich Alfred "Bubi" Hartmann whose record for 352 kills are still the record to be beaten.
F4U 'Corsair': Murasa would cut it. Plus it has ironic side of putting 'naval' character on to the plane served mostly by the Marines. Irony is always nice, am I right?
A-10 'Warthog': Flandre hands down. Good load of fire-power, extreme survivability and antiquated just like her last appearance in EoSD (Hell, I don't count those appearances in books).
Well, that's all I can think of at the moment.
-
Those are some great suggestions. Although, I always thought that the A-10 would be a good match for Yuka too. :3 Slow but powerful, Avenger cannon = Master Spark
Here's what I thought of:
F-4E Phantom: Yuyuko. Because they're "ghosts" :V Hungry ghosts, if you take into account the fuel-hungry Phantom vs food-hungry Yuyuko.
F-15C Eagle: Yukari, both of them have been around for a while but are still the top dogs in their respective worlds.
Mirage 2000: Youmu. Both are small and insanely fast.

Interesting choices!
Not sure if the F-15C fits Yukari well...there needs to be some reference to gaps IMO.
And we still need one to fit the Sukhoi. Eventually.
-
Well, I thought P47 Thunderbolt would fit Yuuka better because of her presence in PC-98 era. Powerful engine topped with supercharger and insane payload is something that also fits Yuuka nicely.
I would also give some consideration for MIG-19 or 21 for Meiling for its maneuverability and dog-fight capability. U-2 would go nicely with Yukari with their ever-peeping eyes. Mirage 2000 would go nicely with
Youmu but also give some consideration to MIG-25; an image of an interceptor with insane straight-line speed but low maneuverability reflects her speed and gullible personality quite well in my book.
Anyhow, I would love to see more of your work, so keep those hands busy!.
-
Thanks. :3
By the way, here's a little more info on the decals. As mentioned, they're made by Ques Q and you can use them on almost anything, not only models airplanes or cars. They've released 8 so far: Reimu, Marisa, Remilia, Flandre, Patchouli, Cirno, Aya, and Sanae. Here's what Sanae's sheet looks like (this photo and the following models are not by me):
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_201104152339122b9.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/201104152339122b9.jpg)
A modeller living in Japan used the decals to create a Sanae Eurofighter Typhoon (once again keeping with the wind / wind priestess connection).

Another (more skilled) person made a Flandre Flanker with decals created from scratch.

Su-47, Reimu.
Do it.
And a Su-37 Nitori.
Btw this thread is lovely :3
-
After Reimu found out that I built a plane for Sanae and not for her, she was not a happy miko.
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_IMG_3065A.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/IMG_3065A.jpg)
"U jelly?"
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_angryreimu.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/angryreimu.jpg)
Let's get to work on the next kit to make her happy again. I'll be building a 1/72 Hasegawa F-16C for Reimu, with Sakuya helping out if the need arises. :3
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_IMG_3071A.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/IMG_3071A.jpg)
Reasons for building:
Like Reimu, the F-16 is small and fairly agile, and is a all-round, lightweight but reliable workhorse, a jack-of-all-trades. Not as powerful or as fast as the more advanced jets, the F-16's versatility makes it popular among customers who can't afford or don't want to get powerful but expensive and specialized aircraft like F-15s. Air forces of several developing nations have already chosen the F-16 as a "starter" jet for their first foray into Western aircraft. Likewise, Reimu is a good character for beginners to Touhou as well.
As for the kit itself, it dates back to 1986. :V However, the good news is that you can easily find one for less than $10, a steal compared to the pricing of other kits today. A lot of reviews have pointed out at how good it builds despite being a 25-year old kit, and is a reasonably easy-to-build kit for both beginners and veterans to practice their skills on.
This will be only my third model since coming back to the hobby, so I'll be trying to improve on my previous efforts. If there are any flaws, I hope Reimu will be forgiving. :ohdear: I'm also guessing that you don't want to be bored to death by step-by-step photos, so I'll just skip ahead to the interesting bits as I reach them.
-
wouldn't the F-2 be the best F-16 variant for Reimu?
-
I get what you mean, especially since the Japanese connection is there. But somehow, to me, it doesn't feel like the right plane for her. Although if I hadn't done the Rafale for Sanae already, I would have made the F-2 for her and the F-16 for Reimu. The two planes have the same roots but are different at the same time, just like how Reimu and Sanae are both shrine maidens but are also different from each other. They are often shown to be both friends and rivals.
Anyhow, I did a little work today and the fuselage halves have been joined with the completed cockpit inside.
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_IMG_3080.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/IMG_3080.jpg)
-
Also, out of all the main characters, Reimu is the slow powerhouse. So, though I'd personally love a little red F-2 for her, I'd really expect her to be a lumbering and powerful air-to-ground attacker, like an A-10 or something.
-
Looks promising, my friend. F16 would fit in nicely to Reimu in my opinion.
Just wondering about whether you would sandpaper right nose area. I see some uneven contour line around that area.
Su-47, Reimu.
Do it.
And a Su-37 Nitori.
Btw this thread is lovely :3
Also, is a model for those planes out? I haven't heart of it yet; maybe I am slow in hearing words. On top of that, give consideration for Su-27 and Letty combination (both are big and came from cold area)

I've already applied some putty (the white stuff on the nose) and tried to sand the two halves level. It's my first time trying to use putty/filler, TBH. If I can pull it off on the first try, it would be great. :) The left side should be okay since I can't feel the seam under my finger anymore, but a very tiny step still remains on the right side as you said.
There are a couple of Su-47 models right now. The latest is a 1/72 from HobbyBoss, the other is an Italeri kit from back when it was still called the S-37.
As for the Su-37, the only one I know is the Zvezda kit, but word is that it's not very good.
The Su-27/Letty seems like a good idea, I was planning a Flanker for Komachi actually since they're both big and imposing figures. BTW, have you seen the Touhou/Ace Combat 5 crossover video series?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nIBdthZHxg
In this series, Letty is piloting a F-14, interesting choice.

Some progress pics with Reimu's F-16. First picture is after spraying primer and a white base coat, second picture is after spraying with red. As you can see, the joints between the fuselage and wings are still visible even after my attempts at filling and sanding. I need more practice. :ohdear:

Coming along pretty nice, I see. However, rather than the gap you mentioned, I see uneven surface around the cockpit area.
Aside from that, I can't wait to see the final product. Keep me posted about your progress.

Hello, some update pictures from me. I've finished up with the decals and added a panel line wash. Only the weapons and landing gear left.
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_IMG_3109.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/IMG_3109.jpg)

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_IMG_3111.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/IMG_3111.jpg)
Looking at it, I'm not completely happy with it. The positions of the decals could be better and I used too dark a color for the wash. Next time I'll use a slightly darker shade of the base color.
-
I think it came out just fine. However, if you scaled down that Reimu decal by 7/8 scale, it could have come out better. That's just my opinion.
-
I couldn't do that since it was an off-the-shelf decal sheet, so the scale of the decals were fixed.
On the bright side, I've finally managed to find a supply of white decal paper at a new art store near my place, so I can now create my own customized decals if I need it.
-
It could've done with a bit more black, imo.
-
but she's red-white
-
Yin-yang orbs are black and white, and there's the whole thing about maintaining balance, so I always see her as red white, but with a bunch of black.
-
Finally finished Reimu's F-16.

Reimu is happy, Sanae can't believe it.
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_IMG_3143A.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/IMG_3143A.jpg)
My thoughts
This was a relatively easy kit to build, and the parts fit well except for one or two places which need filling and sanding. The part I enjoyed the most about this build was turning a $9 kit into something like this. It won't win any contests but I'm happy with it.
At the end of it all, there's only one thing for Reimu to say:
"U jelly?"
"FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-"
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/th_IMG_3148A.jpg) (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n143/Azure_83/IMG_3148A.jpg)
"Ayayayaya...Sanae-san seems to be losing it."
"...That'll teach that upstart shrine maiden."
