Title: Jon Arbuckle drops the F-bomb
Post by: Whatthe on May 27, 2011, 09:52:29 AM
So I was browsing TV Tropes. On their Garfield page, I noticed a snippet claiming that the movie Garfield Gets Real features a text-blurred version of this fan-edited Garfield strip:

[nsfw]http://i.imgur.com/nO6aQ.gif[/nsfw]

I was curious, and checked the movie to confirm it. As it turns out, the strip is indeed in the movie, but the text is actually just too out-of-focus to read...except in one shot.

This is an unedited screenshot from Garfield Gets Real. (http://i56.tinypic.com/szjser.png) Look in the bottom-right...

Yeah, that's a really old Garfield shoppage. I first saw that in ... 2007 or 2008 maybe? Kinda surprised to see it in the official Garfield movie, but then, I'd never watch either of those films.

The comic strip is fake.

In other words, I really didn't even notice that the first time around. What the hell :wat:

I figured it was fake, especially when you put the words 'Jon Arbuckle' and 'F-bomb' together. :V

Haha, his loneliness was too much for him....

Never was a fan of Garfield, though, so it didn't affect me much.

Now this, on the other hand (http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/), has completely altered my perception of the comic for life.

Hey. Guys? For those who haven't seen it...

http://www.garfield.com/comics/vault.html?yr=1989&addr=891023

This is from the actual comic. Read from that point on, until the "end" a few strips later.

Now rethink everything you know about Garfield and its author.

The one actual Garfield comic run that I really liked! YES!

I do remember reading some theory online where this was the end of Garfield, and that every comic after that was Garfield's increasingly paranoid attempts to recall all his memories of home as he starves to death in his new settings.

I remember reading this from the Garfield books I had when I was a kid. Always my favorite part.

Garfield pre-end of the Cold War.

I died laughing at the OP.

But yeah, that "alone" storyline is p.sweet.

I wonder if whoever made the shopped strip is aware it was used in the official movie :V

The funny thing is, it's technically okay for it to be in there, since the movie is unrated (it went straight to DVD, so they didn't need to give it a rating).

The funny part is that it'd be pretty easy to photoshop any strip onto that screenshot.

Almost makes me want to rent the movie and check.

Oh god that's hilarious if it's true, though.

Okay, here's the proof!

This is Garfield Gets Real's Trailers page on the official Garfield website. (http://www.garfield.com/d2v/videos.html) Watch Trailer 2 (preferably in Large quality), pause it when the announcer says "found a way out," and compare that to the links in the OP!

(For more proof, near the bottom of the page, there's a link to the official Garfield YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/OfficialGarfield). Watch the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UhclY-nMgA) there, pause it at the same point, and see the same strip!)

I actually tried to watch this movie. I stopped it after 10 minutes, because the movie itself raped my childhood several times, rather than some random edit.

And I still like Garfield, I read the newest strip every day.

I really didn't like the movie much, and that new 3D model series isn't very good, either. I preferred the old drawn Garfield cartoons.

that new 3D model series

It has it's moments, but yeah, its pretty mediocre.

Anyone else think that a movie about a cartoon character going to the real world should actually go to the real world to have a point, as opposed to just another CGI nearly identical landscape?

I hope not. Chances are that it'll be another cash-in without much real merit.

I avoid it as much as possible.

All I watch on CN lately are the classic Tom and Jerry, the occasinal Ben 10, and Adventure Time. Oh! And re-runs of the GOOD toons. Really, the quality over there went down ever since Dexter's Lab, PPG, Foster's and others eneded.

Agreed. Adult Swim is still OK, on the other hand, but the newer stuff isn't quite as catchy.

Liked it during the '90s and early 2000s. Watched a great deal of classic Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Dexter's, Cow & Chicken, a bit of the shows on Toonami (dubs were cheesy in retrospect), and Courage. Apparently they have dropped the standards bar far too much since. It's no surprise that Adult Swim now starts earlier (used to be 11 EST; now it's at 9).

Stupid dog, you make me look bad! *prepares mask* BOOGA OOGA OOGA!

I remember watching the original toon (1996-ish, I believe?) but never found much to like about it. But in retrospect it still is a bit better than the new 3D cartoon and especially the two terrible movies.

God, and to remember that I was actually forced to watch the Garfield movie by my mom because she wanted my sense of humour to be less violent...yeah, there was nothing funny about it! :ohdear:

I never really saw those movies.

Also only like the first (and maybe the second?) season of the original Garfield cartoon (what still had the original opening song; after that, it became really unfunny). And the special cartoons, those were great.
