Title: [Music] Feedback, anyone?
Post by: Hanaboshi on May 17, 2011, 11:32:29 PM
Sooo, I got bored and started to use dat Touhou soundfont for my original compositions. For lulz, really.

So far, the only one Touhousoundfontified is this one. (http://www.4shared.com/audio/h4wKWJBZ/Touhoumochi.html)

So I wanted some feedback and critiques. Anyone? :P

Ah, another THFont user! There are quite a few of them here (not including me).

Trumpets are a bit too strong on the higher pitches but I blame the Soundfont's implementation of them. Drums could be a bit stronger, and the square doesn't fit too well IMO.

Good work, though.

Haha, I always have that problem with drums. I thought the same thing about the squares, but was too lazy to change it :V And I will see what I can do with the trumpet next time.

Thanks for pointing that out :3

Not a problem!

As for drums (and music production in general), I heard that it's a good idea to compress sounds to their own frequency ranges so that they are all clear and don't muddle each other out. Your DAW (speaking of which, which one is it?) may be able to support that.

Hehe, I'm feeling like a complete noob  :derp:

It that's what you mean, I basically use Anvil Studio for composing the midis and FL10 for everything else.

Hm, then FL should have a compressor plugin, VST, or the sort to get that working. Not sure about this, though, since I'm a Logic and Sonar user.

So I made these (http://soundcloud.com/djsedj/melangolia-remikz) two (http://soundcloud.com/djsedj/medley-test) just for tests.
When I get anything more consistent I might come back here...

Had to load them up under Opera, since FF3.6 failed miserably under my XP install.

#1 - Nice song, but the strings are a bit too powerful. I can hear some compression, a start but still needs more (ZUN uses a lot of it on the drums). Then again I'm still getting the hang of this. Also starting from around 1:51 the slow strings seem a bit muddled.

#2 - Whistle Christmas? Clear drums in beginning, and the instruments are distinct. I can tell some frequencies are compressed to reduce clutter. Also nice use of Yamaha XG sitars (DGX-620 owner and MIDI enthusiast here), but they did muddle the THFont stuff (maybe they were overpowering? Not compressed? Not certain...) Ending was a bit accented for my taste.

Keep up the work!

Weeeell, video game music ain't really my cup of tea, but the composition itself sounds really nice.  I especially like the outro, seems like it could have gone in a classical direction. Keep it up broseph.
