Title: Human computing, needs your help.
Post by: Berzul on April 28, 2011, 11:29:46 PM
Ok, people that are interested in Science!

I am trying to determine what kinds of similarities does people find in songs, how one song is similar to another. Thus, I will use a very basic and probably not accurate at all test, which you can help me with, or at least have fun with it.

The task you would need to attempt is very simple. Find a song similar to this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rlH7muUyC8). It does not matter what pop up into your mind, because that's what I am trying to determine. Best would be, if you could link me to the similar song and provide a short note why do you think it's similar. Find as many similar songs you want really!

That's all really, good luck!

ps. As far Danbooru works for images.. does anyone have an idea of a portal similar to it, but with music, instead of pictures?

I think there's a more surfing-esque one that I thought of first but I couldn't find it. Mainly, the guitar style and the drums. Not that I was going to judge on vocals.

Sure... But you meant the part with "Hilo March (Traditional, performed by George Kulokahai and His Island Serenaders)" Right...?

I don't know of any comprehensive reverse music search engine, but try out some of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Music_search_engines). I've used Midomi before, although that particular site is mostly for vocal songs and the quality of the results depends on how well the users can sing.

What is your initial hypothesis? How do you plan on analyzing your output data? There is certainly merit in your investigation, as there are indeed many notable and interesting factors that can make two pieces of music sound similar, so some more transparency in your research would be nice so we can help you more!

Not so much the beginning chords of your song, but the rest of the song made me think of them.
