It's getting close to that time of year again. Otakon 2011. Baltimore, MD. July 29-31.
The first Guess the Guest contest is up:
All of this act's members are the same gender.
Nearly all of their albums have been in the Oricon Top Ten.
They have a connection to a popular giant robot franchise.
They have a connection to a sporting event.
They have worked with a real legend.
Hmmm.
It's CHEMISTRY, famous for arguably the worst OP in Gundam history. :(
-
IS IT MORNING MUSUME?!
Pretty sure I'm coming. Tentative plans are to cosplay as Kaguya with my daughter as Tewi, but we'll see.
-
Homura Akemi more or less confirmed for Otakon! Probably bring FIXED!Shiki and the old standby of Mikuru.
I wouldn't mind having an MotK Madoka group, if anyone is interested.
But, yeah, totes there, going to preregister in the next couple weeks.
-
I'm still running an MotK set of rooms, currently looking at 9 people (although I'm sure I'm forgetting a few) with maybe a few slots. I got 2 rooms reserved but I could possibly add another. We're looking at a maximum of 6 per room, preferrably around 5.
They're doubles at the Hyatt right across the walkway, price is 689.54/room (I think, off the top of my head) for the whole weekend (Thursday-Saturday). Cost will be divided evenly amongst all people. If we get 12 it comes out to 115/person for the weekend. If you wish to join in, you can throw your name up. I will need payment IN FULL 1-2 weeks before Otakon, so I don't get stuck with paying someone's share.
I'll keep a running tab of everyone in the room and will pester you with emails/etc to pay me.
-
Pretty sure I'm coming. Tentative plans are to cosplay as Kaguya with my daughter as Tewi, but we'll see.
That would be very cute :>
I also plan on going. Hopefully I'll have more money than when I went to my last convention. :V
-
Jesus Christ, is it Otakon season again?
Let me get past AnimeBoston first.
-
If someone is willing to drop by Laurel to pick my rear end up, I'm willing to put up a share for the room (me no have car :( ).
-
Hmm, that reminds me. I will almost certainly need a ride up to the Otakonning, if anyone can possibly help with that? PM me if you think you can hit Fredericksburg.
-

Grumble... I... I guess, let's talk about this once it approaches. At least I'll know how to get down there by then.
-
yeah can't wait, look forward to it every year.
-
I need to find good plane/train tickets first, so tentatively /in.
I don't think there's any prereg mail service or anything, so I'm not too worried about that... Hotel room costs are another matter. 3:

dammit I won't be there to see this.

They take checks by mail. You have to have them in by June IIRC.
-
You wait ya damn turn! I have two cons to go to between now and then!
I will try frantically to get Ran done by then, but I'm still just starting things off. I don't think I'll make it!
-
Oh God I forgot the initial pre-reg discounted price was $65. That's almost criminal. Genericon pre-reg was $10 for the weekend and they actually reimbursed me $20 because I was a panelist. :[
At least I'll have the Toohoo panel to get that money back, but man.
-

Oh, I meant that it doesn't look like they mail out the badges if you register before a certain date.
And $65 is a bit steeper than I'm used to, and even the hotels are way more expensive... I guess I've been spoiled too much by ACen. 3:

God I want to be a panelist again this year but I have no fucking clue what to submit for :(
-
For those of you getting hotels, if you are a government employee then you can get a room at the Hyatt for less than the Otakon rate. ($144 per night compared to $199 per night)
And I'll be there taking pictures (I seen a few of you folks at the Katsucon panel) to put in my job's monthly paper.
-
It's a shame, because I know the Otakon staff, on the whole, tend to be a good bunch of people (their panelist coordinator told me on Sunday last year to apply for the Toohoo panel again this year and he'd automatically approve it and give us a bigger room to boot). I expect the BCC and the prospective vendors are the ones gouging.
-
I'm surprised our disaster didn't ruin it for you guys :] But really I do want to do a panel this year, I just have no idea.
-
It might have been an influencing factor, but Aaron (the Otakon panels coordinator) works closely with Lou Arruda, who does the AnimeBoston panels, so he was able to ask Lou about what we've done at AB and judge based on that.
-
Eh well I'm fairly sure I could get whatever I want to do approved. I've already done one and people can easily vouch for me. I just got to decide what to do.
-
A major reason the price was raised was due to some new tax thing in Baltimore, the convention center itself raising its rates (no doubt to pay for the improvements we saw last year), and the new caterer contract being more expensive.
On the plus side, I just learned that they're moving the rave this year to somewhere over twice as spacious. Hell yeah!
-
Hopefully they're also moving it to somewhere twice as far away from everything else. <_<
-
awwww I wished to go >.> my otakon is on agust 12-14 :( (Montreal)
-
my friends and I are getting a panel together. Hopefully it'll be approved I haven't done a panel before but I know he has so there's a chance. Also if Gamerabaenre doesn't do an Otakon panel on Gunpla/ Garage kits this year. I might put one together for the 2012 con season and take that with me where ever I go.
-
despite being unbelievably poor I always manage to find a way to go every year so I will probably show up this year too
except I'll actually know you people this time! gasp!!
-
On the plus side, I just learned that they're moving the rave this year to somewhere over twice as spacious. Hell yeah!
Last couple years I thought the motion from the ravers on the building was so bad I thought the floor would be damaged. The whole main-section of the convention center was shifting from the dancing.
-
You know, assuming things work out, this will be the first time for me. Never could make it before. Any recs for what panels to go to and what not?
-
Take pictures for kippy, since I kinda wanna see what it like. Fuck, Take pics for everyone on the forum. we must know every last detail of your lives
-
Not this year. Maybe next time I'll actually be in the country for it
-
We're looking at replacing our room block with an actual suite because at this point, the costs of 2-3 rooms can't be more than a single suite. So PARTY AT OTAKON HELL YEAH.
:bzzz: :bzzz:

:bzzz: :bzzz:
-
I like where this is going. :3 Someone has to bring a camera.
-
Generally cons are conducive to cameras, if only for the cosplays.
-
if only for the cosplays.
Friend of mine took a picture of an otakon staffer several years ago, after saying "hey, it's otakon staffer cosplay!"
Good times. <_<
-
So what exactly does a suite entail? I just spent last night making arrangements with the group of people I'm in that expected to room together, so I'd like to know if that needs to be modified somehow.
-

That depends on how much you guys are trying to spend on a suite. Some suites can go from slightly oversized basic rooms to multi-roomed penthousees on the top floor. No matter what you get, expect to pay at least a grand per night for one.( At least that was the case for me and my coworkers at the National Harbor)

thinking TSO is talking about business suites. I not sure if the Hyatt has presidential suites like the Gaylord does but I'm positive they'll have business suites. We got upgraded from a twin bed room to a business suite because they ran out of twins at the Marriot a few years back and it was easily 50% larger than a normal room.

There's actually some chairs and a lamp behind me from where I took the photo so if we needed more room we could have moved those around. we looked up the cost afterwards just to see and it was about $400 a night for that room.
-
As long as at least two beds will be specifically allotted to my planned group of 7, then it'll be all dandy.
Three would be supernice, but not necessary.
-
still too much :effort: and :bux: to go.
I'll get around to something like this one of these days.
-
So what exactly does a suite entail? I just spent last night making arrangements with the group of people I'm in that expected to room together, so I'd like to know if that needs to be modified somehow.
Basically they're just bigger overall. Some of them even have kitchens/etc. Like the suite I stayed in 2 years ago had two separate bedrooms, two baths, and a living room. Extra beds weren't a big deal because we had so much room people just brought air mattresses and stuff (and the couch had a pullout bed too).
We're already at 1400/weekend with 2 rooms, and looking to add a third (each room is 689.54/weekend). The suite I had 2 years ago was 1200 for the weekend and we had 10 in one very comfortably. While it may be a bit more... claustrophobic I guess sleep wise it'll be a lot better for just entertaining and partying etc.
-
Well, all right. Our group can bring sleeping bags (and I can probably snag an air mattress), but we're also all cosplayers, and some of us have rather large loads for it (Silentsword is notorious for requiring the entirety of a mobile hotel rack for just his stuff, and it will still be spilling off the sides - it's actually pretty amazing/hilarious to see in action), so be aware that space - especially closet space, with all of Silentsword's stuff and Yucari's Virgilia dress on its own - is going to be at a premium.
But if we have at least two full beds and a couch bed, adding air mattresses and sleeping bags should make the sleeping situation okay.
-
The suite we had 2 years ago had a fucking walk-in closet, I don't think it'll be much of an issue. I mean seriously, it was the size of a small apartment.
Nothing's set in stone either. I still have the 2 rooms promised reserved, we haven't changed anything.
-
Well, I don't take up too much space, and I can sleep on anything (I sleep on the floor in my house), so I'm pretty much set. All I need is a pillow and maybe a blanket. :3
-
I wouldn't mind having an MotK Madoka group, if anyone is interested.
I am game for this, since my Mami wig just arrived in the mail today~!
Tentative plans are to cosplay as Kaguya with my daughter as Tewi, but we'll see.
That would be pretty much the cutest thing ever and would encourage me to finish my Reisen outfit I started 18 months ago :V
Also MJP and I have a room that may or may not still need people for stay tuned. If we did need more people it'd be 3 max since I hate cramming in like sardines at cons.
-
Ooh, a triangles! So we have a Homura and a Mami~?
-
I am game for this, since my Mami wig just arrived in the mail today~!
Now I don't have to worry about padding for UK! :D
-
Psh, I still have to go padded for Mami unfortunately
But yeah I'm really thrilled on how the wig came (I bought it prestyled from China because I am so terrible at wig design + full time career = throw money at the problem and save my time for sewing the damn thing)
(http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7416/image0090o.jpg) (http://img233.imageshack.us/i/image0090o.jpg/)
I was torn between Sayaka and Mami, but MJP made his preference QUITE clear. Also unlimited musket works. A friend of mine is making Kyouko, but I don't know if she's coming to Otakon.
And special bonus of the other wig I bought for my (significantly easier and mostly right from my closet) Anime Next outfit that will also be coming with me to Otakon:
(http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/8437/image0091ny.jpg) (http://img51.imageshack.us/i/image0091ny.jpg/)
OH BOY I WONDER WHO THAT IS.
...actually in that pic it can really be two different ladies ohsnaps I know what costume I might have to do next year now :V
Note to self: buy wigheads.
-
Ironically, if I were being COMPLETELY accurate I'd have to bind a little for Homura. But I like her design more than Mami's so...
-
Accuracy-schmaccuracy.
I'm only going to make sure to wear something to uh, accent accordingly due to the corsety thing she wears. Otherwise FORGET THAT NOISE.
-
triangles will be tiniest Mami.
UK will be bustiest Homu.
I will be darkest Madoka. (Assuming I can afford to have the outfit made, which assumes I can afford to go to Otakon. 3: )
-
Transportation plans: ...bus, maybe
Lodging plans: ???
But of course all the cosplays are down to the last detail.
Okuu is already done, all I have to do is redo the cannon and get a new pair of wings
Hopefully Homura will be finished before as well so Madoka club and Panda Hero!Gumi is so easy it feels like cheating.
-
We priced a suite out at the Hyatt and we're pretty sure that's what we're going with. We're gettiing the "City-view Superior Suite" here (http://www.baltimore.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/rooms/room-description.jsp?chooseLocale=&start=15), with pictures (http://www.baltimore.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/gallery/index.jsp?roomId=610&tabType=photo). No kitchen but who cares, this suite is bitchin'! Two double beds and a pullout in the sofa, plus from pics more than enough room to stuff some air mattresses and stuff with ease.
$2038 for the whole weekend, which comes out to about $138/person if we have 15 (which we're pretty damn close to last count I made).
-
Oh Hell yeah, now that's what I call a room! Got reason to bring one of my laptops, too (gotta stay connected, yes?) I can't wait for this. :D
-
If we're going to be paying $138 for 15 people to share one bathroom and 2.5 beds, then you can count Yucari out, and honestly you can count me out as well. Sorry. :|
If we can get four beds and two bathrooms, then that would probably work. But the proposed ratio is simply way too lopsided.
-
Hrm, well nothing's set in stone. Your group is the majority lol. I just brought it up as an alternative considering where we're at pricewise, I still have those 2 rooms reserved so if that's the case then we can stick to that.
-
Yeah, I guess I'll just cancel that reservation tomorrow... =<
-
It'll be hard to set things straight until we have a set number, yes? I still don't have any guarantee on someone picking me up yet. I don't really care about the kind of room, really, but having enough space so we can all talk and socialize would be great. That's the only thing I think we really need, as for as rooming goes.
-
The problem is a significant number of people are not interested in a room with so few beds and only one bathroom, and I don't blame them. I would prefer the more open space but there are legitimate concerns about what to do when you wake up in the morning, especially when most of the group cosplays.
-
Good point. Maybe get an idea of how many people need personal space as opposed to those we are more rough and tumble?
-
Could you downsize to a smaller suite for the (smaller number of) people who don't mind cramming together/don't have a lot of costume gear?
-
Could you downsize to a smaller suite for the (smaller number of) people who don't mind cramming together/don't have a lot of costume gear?
That was the smaller suite, it wasn't even the VIP one. It still was $2063 and frankly Kilga's group made the majority share, so when they pulled out it fell apart. I don't think I can get enough people who'd be able to afford to split that while keeping people count low. I mean, even with 10 people that's still $200/person. While I wouldn't mind the cost I dunno who all would be willing to do that.
-
I know it would be a bit much for me. Maybe stick with the original plan?
-
I should be able to go this year. Well, I'm really hoping to, since I apparently HAVE to being my Komachi this time.
Who wants to see Komachi driving a paddleboat?
-

bwahahahah
-
No doubt intentional - I could have sworn they've had either Dear Friends or VGL happen during Otakon before....
-
That's pretty clever IMO, but who the hell's going to have $150 for a orchestra ticket, let alone the kind of attire to goto one >_>.
-
That's pretty clever IMO, but who the hell's going to have $150 for a orchestra ticket, let alone the kind of attire to goto one >_>.
It starts at $38, the $150 is for the meet-and-greet.
Given that the only shit that went on last year Saturday at around that time was the perennially-stupid masquerade, I'm considering it.
-
Attire?
Far too many people wear jeans and nerd t-shirts or costumes. VGL encourages more casualness, but even at the Dear Friends orchestra show a few years back people clearly had no idea what proper attire for the symphony is :V At least put on some nice slacks and a button down!
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to go either, but I think MJP will fuss if I drag him to YET ANOTHER VIDEO GAME ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. Also alcohol.
-

So basically what you're saying is Shots --> Concert?
I'm in.

Perhaps we can find a cheaper bar/foodery this year as well!
-

Hey, the Touhou panel was running at about that time. :(
-
Who wants to see Komachi driving a paddleboat?
A pefect creative photo op for me to try out.
Touhous on boats. Who's down with doing a photoshoot with that theme?
Just need a Murasa cosplayer to nail the point home for this one.
-
So basically what you're saying is Shots --> Concert?
I'm in.
Sounds kinky, I'm up for it. :3
-
Hey, the Touhou panel was running at about that time. :(
Hopefully it won't be this year, although it was packed to the gills anyway.
I pray I won't be sitting next to smelly-as-fuck people who make fun of Kefit this time.
-
Sounds kinky, I'm up for it. :3
DEBAUCHERY!
Makes me wish there was a karaoke room we could book out. Maybe for NYCC/NYAF we should drag people to a Korean BBQ and karaoke joint or to Kenka downtown for some cheap Sapporo, awesome ramen and other izakaya chow.
triangles and I have room for one more, with one tentative (starts with a J and rhymes with banana) if you are not a snorer and don't mind if tri and I get a bed (I claim neck injury).
-
YOU claim neck injury. I claim married couple bonus + being the ones with the room reservation since Otakon 2010 started :V
Toying with the idea of applying to run a panel/game we run at Anime NEXT since the deadline's coming up. We keep getting rejected every year though :(
-

Good to be onstage where just the opposite is true. Plus I get more elbow room, get some very positive attention, and 200 people HAVE to listen to my jokes!Toying with the idea of applying to run a panel/game we run at Anime NEXT since the deadline's coming up. Care to elaborate?

I can submit it and help you guys out running it. I've already got a successful panel submission through so I'm pretty much guaranteed another one if I ask, and I really want to do a panel this year but have no ideas.
-

Having done a panel in the past in no way guarantees you a panel in the future, unless that panel was exceptionally well-received. And I would hardly qualify yours as 'successful'. <_<

y u gotta rain on my parade ;______;
-
It's true though - MJP (and I by proxy) managed to pack a 9am Friday morning panel in 2005.
It really means nothing unless you're applying with the EXACT SAME fanpanel maybe but even then it didn't get in last few years :ohdear:
-
Yeah, I'd kill to do another panel... TSO, how into politics are you?
-
Very? It's suicidal to bring up politics around me because I will always get into a debate about it. :persona:

Yeah, I'd kill to do another panel... TSO, how into politics are you?

I actually recovered the old 2005 panel on politics and anime from my/his old laptop, but there's been so much new stuff since then it needs like 80% new material.
I might try my TIME TRAVEL IN ANIME proposal once again now that there's a few more prominent ones out and I can legitimately say my job is explaining physics to kids who pretty much have no idea what math is so I can do it with the unwashed masses and 15 year old congoers :V

Yeah kay sorry for not finding this earlier. I would like to go, but i kinda want a buddy or two. I can prob offer room for 3-5 people. It will be a hilton 5 star. Ill charge like ~70 a night cus my dad can get a deal. Ill most likely only stay for one night tho. I am from boston and has cosplay.
Hmm upon rereading my post, it sounds sketchy. I bet half of you are like "lol scrub, trying to troll me into giving you monies? well fat chance!". Well, I dont blame you for thinking those thoughts. I'm willing to do room first, share after if you guys prefer it that way. I honestly just want to go to another con and have fun.
-
I don't think it's sketchy or anything, and hope you can find some people to join you. I'd pitch in, but I'm already going with TSO's group. (Maybe ask her if you want to join in our group?)
-
Not sketchy at all - my husband and I met some really good friends of ours off a random room request post for Katsucon half a dozen years ago :V
It is easier to find a space in a room than roommates I've found, heck we might have some space but I cannot confirm yet since MJP handles all that I just bring my silly costumes.
BUT OH OH OH MJP IS FINALLY BROHOUING IT UP IT WILL BE FABULOUS.
-
BUT OH OH OH MJP IS FINALLY BROHOUING IT UP IT WILL BE FABULOUS.
YES THERE WILL BE BLOODICE CREAM
-
This of course means I have to coordinate my silly outfit wearing times with him to make sure we jive and all.
and possibly sewing most of it too
-
Okies, I just meant this as an offer for anyone who wants a cheap room. I'm perfectly fine with rooming myself...cept I would just prefer to follow someone around cus I've never been there. You guys know if the panelists from anime boston are going? Such a chill group.
-

Ahahaha.
Yes... yes, I imagine they are.
-
Yes... yes, I imagine they are.
You'd probably know if you drove the ten minutes to AUSA! I mean, i-it's not like we wanted to meet you again or anything :V
In all seriousness, at least 3/4 of the AB panel will be at Otakon... doing another Touhou panel among other shenanigans. It should also be the first one we've done where the entire panel is in cosplay, so my sincere apologies.
-
You'd probably know if you drove the ten minutes to AUSA! I mean, i-it's not like we wanted to meet you again or anything :V
Or across the street to katsucon... <_<;
-
Speaking of said panel, I submitted for it tonight. Here's hoping!
Oddly enough there wasn't a part of the form that was "when do you want to be scheduled" so I threw it in as a request in the question box at the end.
-
Or across the street to katsucon... <_<;
Makes sense, now to find out which of you folks were the two Komachi's at that panel. (Been to AUSA also since its a 10 minute metro ride from my house)
I owe them their pictures of them fighting over the scythe. Might as well post it for them. (Other pics from both panels are in there somewhere)

You bet your sweet ass I am, cinnamon buns.
The only thing preventing me from preregistering outright is the harsh reality of unemployment and the hope of finding something promising before the prereg deadline. If I do find something, that'll have to take priority. I've certainly received enough badgering over the last week to get me psyched up for this even if I originally had no intent to go, and I had every intent to go in the first place!
-
Of course I'll be there. I look forward to another wonderful weekend of drinking in Bodymore, Murderland.
-

As if there's anything else to do here. Maybe watch the Orioles lose. Or star in your own real-life version of The Wire or Homicide.

Hey all you sane people who don't snore, we have one, possibly two max, slots open in our room!
We're booked from Thursday through Sunday, it'd be great if you wanted all three nights but we can work out just two.
With tax it'd be around $120ish if we have four people all three nights, $85ish for just two as long as we get a fourth.
PM me or triangles if you want in on this shindig! We're cool people, I swear. Hanging with us means you get in to ERRY MotK DRINKING PARTY over the weekend!
-

:3 sounds like a challenge....
-
Our usual roomie crew aren't going this year so yeaaaaaaah we'd rather not resort to "taking random neckbeard off the Something Awful forums on Thursday afternoon" again :derp:
But it's still kinda early so I'm not too concerned.
-
Oh...huh...I still need to arrange a ride, don't I? Is anyone at all coming from the south of Fredericksburg?

I'm really thinking about this. Damn, it's so close after AX. But... it'd be my first Otakon! Augh, and if I roomed with you guys, I might have to think about a cosplay. And I wanna drink myself silly too.
Feel free to put me down as "Considering it." I'll finalize a decision by May 15th.
-
Oh...huh...I still need to arrange a ride, don't I? Is anyone at all coming from the south of Fredericksburg?
If you can make it north a couple hours, I can probably drive you the rest of the way. I'd be coming up Thursday.

Not sure I could make it up even that far, really. Though I'll see what options present themselves.
-
I'd be very surprised if there's no bus you can take.
Or comedy option: if you post on the cosplay.com forums they have a rideshare thread IIRC :V
-
I...really, am uncomfortable. With the idea of taking the bus. I *could*, but if at all possible, I do not want to. At all.
-
Let me get back to you on that. If I'm not driving anyone else up, I could wind up just driving down there. It's only an hour each way and then another 2-3 to baltimore depending on traffic.
-
All right. And I can give you gas moneys for your troubles.
-
I'm really thinking about this. Damn, it's so close after AX. But... it'd be my first Otakon! Augh, and if I roomed with you guys, I might have to think about a cosplay. And I wanna drink myself silly too.
Feel free to put me down as "Considering it." I'll finalize a decision by May 15th.
We're at four. Five would max it out. I'll ask our others but I personally am OK with five. That would bring it to $103 if we're talking Thu-Sun for all five people. Now that's a bargain.
-
I will hopefully know by today if I'll have any roommates or not.
-
Oh, oh, I should post here too. I've got a room in the Hilton, that is connected to the convention center(Kilga/Yucari stayed there last year, they know of it :o). We currently have 5/6 people in the room, at $710~ for the weekend, Thursday through sunday. If anyone would like to room with us, we have 2/3 spots open(we generally don't like having more than 8 in a room) Standard 2bed room, most of us are fine with not getting a bed.
If we fill the room(8 people) it comes to $90 a person for the weekend.
Let me know! My AIM is kunaikun. :3c
Also, Kilga, I saw there was a couple room still open at the Hilton, if you're still looking.

You are going to show up covered in like ten of these, aren't you.
And nothing else.
Seriously though, I do want to cosplay this year and time is running out to get a costume together. Still have no idea what I'm gonna do. Was thinking about a homestuck crocodile for hilarious nak purposes.

Do you know how to sew and/or use a hot glue gun?
BE A BROHOU
PEER PRESSURE
-
I can sew about as well as I can cook.
Which is to say at an average level but motivation is a tremendous issue. <_<;

I'm working on my fourth. How about it?

Motivaaaaaaation! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0yc1T11caE)
I'm only on Touhou #3 for Otakon I SWEAR IT'LL REALLY HAPPEN THIS YEAR
-
I think I'm on my 5th for otakon?
Byakuren~
-
Nice! I really love her outfit, can't wait to see it~!
Once school gets out, I'll get cracking on Reisen. I was planning on looooong thigh high socks (which unfortunatly are wool :ohdear:) but I might downgrade in the interest of surviving Baltimore summer.
I forgot to apply for an Otakon panel, oh well. Just as well, I had so much fun last year anyway did I mention 2010 was the best Otakon I've had since 2003 thanks to you all CAUSE IT WAS :3

If they made those for MOLLE I would totally rock one to my next airsoft game.
-

Oh, who were you dressed as?
I was the guy who did genderswapped Yuka and Sakuya, that was running the shoots on friday and Saturday.
-
I was the Meiling on Saturday :V
Seriously, prior to hooking up with Touhou peeps all my con friends were SRSBIZ COSPLAYERS and they'd dress up as things that are either uber-popular or skimpy just to get more photos which just isn't my thing at all.
-
I enjoy photos, but I think that semi popular characters are kind of a good sweet spot for photo getting. The popular ones you have to be EXCEPTIONAL at to stand out. And the skimpy ones...well...um...I don't think I'd be comfortable with pictures like that of me on the internet ^-^;.
-
I'd totally pose in skimpy outfits if only in the hope of becoming Man-Faye of the East. :derp:
Also someone please start talking as to where the decent bars are, lest we chance Hooters being our destination which is fine - wiiiiiiiings!
-
as to where the decent bars are
Baltimore
-
I think the problem last year was more that the Touhou panel got out so late everyone else at the con had the same brilliant idea and beat us to the (rum and) punch.
-
Oh, sure, blame us.
-
Did you guys request the same timeslot this year or they don't jive that way at Otakon?
-
We requested a panel. As far as I know, "when" was never in our control.
-
Ah. I am a sub-division programming head at AnimeNEXT which does take into account time requests, but it's a much smaller scale con and due to when it happens has more in the way of needing to juggle school commitments (like, mine!)
-
Right. My Otakon roommates didn't get art tables due to the new lottery system and are extremely unlikely to go. As such, I have some spots open (read: all of them except mine).
Staying 3 nights, thursday afternoon to sunday morning. I'll be at the Sheraton Inner Harbor, right next to the convention center; it is directly connected via skywalk.
Interested in three roommates for a total of four people in the room. It's one kingsize bed in a nonsmoking room. ~$120 for all three nights is my estimate after taxes.
I would greatly prefer to have roommates I'm familiar with, so please don't be offended if I turn you down. <_<; Gender is irrelevant to me as I will respect your privacy either way, but I would prefer that you be 18 or older. As I'm limiting the number of people in the room, space should not be an issue if you are a heavy cosplayer.
-
Well, I sent in my prereg stuff yesterday, so things are good on that end. Now comes the next big part, though - saving up for the fares to fly over to Baltimore. Which shouldn't be too hard if I can be a tightwad for two months. I think I'll have enough left for my share of the hotel price and food and... yeah. I should be good. If not I'll just take out a second payday loan in July and THEN I'll be good, definitely. :derp:
-
I just got a plane ticket to baltimore and back for $170 9%% Southwest. They seem to be having some sort of online discount going on, because the same tickets a month ago were $250.
Worth a look I think.

Lucky man. Flights have been $240~ on both Southwest and Delta for the past month. I'm still waiting for a sale, but it may never come.

Hmm, sounds like Expedia is trying to rip me off if that's the case. All i seem to be getting is the $650-750 range. :V
-
If you don't have a problem with it, try looking up train tickets! I'm getting my Amtrak tickets from Chicago to Baltimore for $108 each way.
Sure, it's a 15 hour ride, but inconvenience is the price a cheap man must pay. :V
-
Hmm, sounds like Expedia is trying to rip me off if that's the case. All i seem to be getting is the $650-750 range. :V
Well, that depends on how far away you are. I'm coming from the Buffalo/Niagara area of New York, so it's not REALLY far away.
Those sound like the tickets I'll be buying for my plane to Fanime next year, though. Ugh, that's gonna be a pricey one.
-
For flight search purposes, try Kayak - it searches everything. Quite powerful and easy to use. Hell, it does hotels and otherwise too.
2nding trains, trains are AWESOME! They're trains! TRAINS!
-
I was wondering if it's too late to still get into that MotK room, if not I'm need a room, preferably one that wasn't so far away like the 12 blocks up a hill like last year. >.>;
-
I'm still working things out, talk to Momiji or Mima-sama they're handing the headcounts in #conmeido. I hold the reservations but as far as organizing goes they're mostly handling it.
-

Ah, well, I'm coming in from New Mexico, so that's probably why. Fanime's in CA last I recall. But hmm, I'll look into MJP's advice, see if I do get a better deal.
Edit: Welp, Kayak couldn't find anything itself but it did find stuff on Expedia and Priceline - The former's still less expensive. o3o

Hey guys guess who the Yankees are playing Otakon weekend :V

Thankfully, the Yankees are playing at home.

Hey guys guess who the Yankees are playing Otakon weekend :V
Again? :V
Also, yeah, please join the #conmeido channel on ppirc.net, for all your con-planning needs.
-
Yeah but at least we're not sharing the Inner Harbor food court with eleventy billion Yankee fans :V
Just thought it was funny it's the same weekend anyway, but maybe that's how baseball work.
-
O's or not, Yankees or not, I haven't seen a baseball game firsthand since Roger Clemens was a Blue Jay.
Oh, I miss it so much. :<
-
I think I'm going to make it out this year.
Question: What's a good departure time for Sunday? This should take into consideration con activities, anything else this group might have planned for the afternoon and then transit to Baltimore's airport. I'm pretty flexible on this and I've decided on the Thursday arrival time already. Thanks.
-
Hmmm, there tends to be a concert on Sunday noon/early afternoon (2009 Naomi Tamura :*) and I like the art auction since we're looking to get some nerdy Nice Things for our house. Usually by 2-3ish I'm on the road because I get to drive home on KILGA'S FAVORITE ROAD BEEPBEEP.
This year I gotta hunt you all down on Thursday. I was with my ~*~serious business~*~ cosplayer friends last time on Thursday before which was awkward and they were too busy sewing and having petty drama to eat dinner at a reasonable hour :ohdear:

One more spot left~

My FAVORITE ROAD has since changed to CT-15 because, as much as there tends to be Sunday traffic out the ass on the NJT, there is also at least some shit to look at, even if it's just the sky and the occasional warehouse. CT-15 is absolute murder on a driver, especially coming home from the Baltimore/DC area. There is fucking nothing to look at. Barely any sky, no shops, no buildings no warehouses, very few intersecting roads, not even very many cars. Nothing but dense trees goddamn everywhere for I don't even know how long but I'm pretty sure I regularly spend over an hour on it each way.
Fuck CT-15 and the Merritt Parkway right up the ass.
-

I think the only reason I prefer CT-15 over the NJTP is because it eventually winds up somewhere instead of the same bumper sticker you've been chasing for the last two and a half hours. Then again, CT-15's repetitive scenery has the added benefit of lulling you into a lethargic state, which is perfect for vacuous, unlit stretches of highway when you lose all sense of speed and find a sharp 30 degree angle turn at the base of a hill.
-
The Merritt Pkwy/CT-15 combo is a BEAUTIFUL drive which I cannot wait to take my midlife-crisis mobile down when I get one. Although yeah, driving it on anything other than empty traffic probably sucks total ass. D:
Acela is not an option?

During the day, sure, but certainly not in the dead of night when the only light you're afforded comes from your headlights. It can still be a bit bland considering that the trees are what stands out beyond anything else. Even in my little corner of suburbia, I can drive down certain streets and have a chance to see songbirds of a wide variety, hawks, woodchucks, wild turkeys, deer, and the occasional great blue heron. I guess CT-15's spectrum of things to look at just doesn't seem as colorful to me.
Acela is not an option?
It's been a four man party van for us on the way down both of the two years we've gone. It saves money and makes it more convenient to travel on our terms.
-

That sounds awesome!
Also fyi, we still have room for an optional fifth in our room - that'll be the absolute maximum we'll have. Come hang with us and get into ERRY COOL PARTY. Or just sleep!

They're handing out panel notices. Apparently everyone will get one so they will know where their panel stands in terms of acceptance, which is a good thing.
I haven't seen one yet. Which is a bad thing. :(
-
Yeah, I heard about that.
"many panels that have run at several previous Otakons were also not selected this year" - Also from the forums
I've heard around the internets that several popular recurring panels were waitlisted in favor of new content. Cross your fingers.
-
Congratulations!! This panel has been selected for inclusion in Otakon?s Panels Programming for 2011.
\o/
Disaster averted, it seems.

You should come. Just ignore the random bodies strewn around the city.

Everyone thinks that, I'm actually still 19, turning 20 tomorrow if you see the upcoming birthdays on the forums.
Yes, yes, come to otakon this will be excellent. :derp:
-
You should come. Just ignore the random bodies strewn around the city.
Well, a great philosopher once said, and I quote, let the bodies hit the floor.
Mima, you need to be present for the continuing adventures of Wrench-Boy and Santa Claus with Chinese Girl Scout. It's like Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, only good.
-
Triangles: Let's get more drinks this time, I'm still underage so it's still super special. :D
Oh and I see there's a new wrench for Wrench Boy that can knock my drink all over Momiji :V
At least now I know I don't have to waste us all a half hour for me to get my ID they don't check anyway!
(unless we go to a more reputable drinking establishment)
-
More reputable? What's the fun in that?
-
Well we based our choice IIRC around "what is open at this hour that isn't crazycrowded also triangles needs to prove she's over 21"
Because girl scouts are too young to drink :V
Hotel bar/sorta restaurant it was!
who knows if I will be decked out as girl scout, Easter bunny or ???? for such drinking shenanigans
-
Ah, that makes sense. It's not fun trying to get into a crowded bar; worse so when most of the occupants are drunken girls who think they're divas on karaoke night. No amount of booze can make that sound good.
-
Discounted registration ends on the fourth; hope everyone already registered :3
-
Might try to go next year if my cosplay is completed :3
-
You should come THIS year anyway :D
-
I'm a little late though :D and I really want that cosplay done before going :ohdear:
-
Just come; I'm not cosplaying (not enough money for a good costume). I just want to go, have a good time, and get smashed at the bars later with my fellow [legal] Maidens. :3
-
You should come THIS year anyway :D
Speaking of which, I've noticed that there are a few people that we've been trying to badger to get over here that aren't.
-

sadly I only drink red wine on Really special occasion and when I feel like it :) and yes I want my cosplay since I'm really shy and with it I could hide :) and I really want it done :O I want to wear it already.IT,ll be lot of trouble though ^^
-
Shy? I can fix that. Who do you intend to cosplay as?
-
Ran Yakumo :)
-
Ah, that's a hard one to pull off, especially the tails. I wish you luck on that one.
-
Thanks alot :) I'll be giving my all -> golden lenses,makeup,tails,ear,hat,everything :D
-
Oh wow, going for the eyes, too? That's hardcore. Anyone out there going that far for a good cosplay?
-
I want to give everything I got for it to be mostly accurate. However I'm not going for the usual yellow I'm going for a realistic cosplay
(hair won't be yellow but surely dark blonde not light, same for the lenses and the tails. The costume won't be flashy blue one like the one shew wear it'll be darker and better) the only thing's missing from my planning are her shoes :(
-
Most of my cosplay friends do colored contacts, but they're also the ones who also either win BEST COSTUME at the contests or are the judges. I could never spend that much time and money on costumes.
Heck, the outfit I'm working on for my con (THIS WEEKEND AHHHH) all but the skirt was from my closet/eBay.
Shoes are always a pain, I tend to just hit up my local thrift shops and budget shoe stores and see what's "close enough." Honestly, you'd be fine with (comfortable!) black or brown dress shoes IMO.
-
I'll be sure to check ^^
-
Truthfully, outside of contests and certain characters, not too many people will pay attention to your shoes, really. The only Touhou cosplay I would scrutinize shoes on would be Koishi and Satori cosplays, for the hearts. :]
-
^^ well I want it to be perfect :)
-
You also need to walk around all day in them :V
My Alice shoes were adorable Mary Janes, but I had terrible blisters that lasted for weeks after the con. Whereas my Meiling outfit? Ballet flats baby :*
Also remember the beauty of Touhou cosplay - most everything is some sort of "fanart" so there's alot more flexibility.
A quick Googling shoes Ran tends to have what looks like white booties...? Those are actually nice, as that'd be a boot cover that you can slip over comfortable shoes :D
-
^^ let's see what I could do for the shoes ^^
-
Yeah, most of the pictures of Ran's shoes show white booties. I think I may have seen her in brown loafers once, but go for the white.
-
I don't think I'll have any time until Otakon for any sort've costume work. =[
-
awww same here :) next year though :) what would you cosplay as Momiji ?
-
what would you cosplay as Momiji ?
*points to sig*
-
^^ I would love to see that :D.Next year maybe.
Have fun this year :3
-
I already have outfits, but they're not quite complete, that's all. I still need to make my sword/shield, along with some other overall enhancements to my Momioutfit that I've been thinking about for awhile now.
You do realize that's me in the signature and video, ne?
-
You do realize that's me in the signature and video, ne?
yes I do :D it's pretty well done :)
-
You do realize that's me in the signature and video, ne?
I was wondering about that one. Well, now I know. :D
-
am I doing too much for my cosplay ?
would you laugh if I tell you that I'm trying to act like a girl so that my cosplay could be accurate ?
would you laugh more if I told you that I try to tune my voice so I could sound more like a girl ?
This is so hard :(
-
Your doing it right.
-
Just make sure you shave good; facial hair really ruins the illusion.
-
don't worry about that :) I even thought about using some makeup :)
-
The voice thing just ain't working out for me. I sound like a guy trying to impersonate Yuko Goto, which is exactly what is going on. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gzqGuJY3qc) Hiding your jaw line a bit with the wig helps. The newer wig I got for Eirin does that quite well, which is why I got it. I'll be doing Ran sometime myself, and the wig I got for her does the same thing.
Don't forget some of the mannerisms too. Guys tend to slouch a bit more than girls, so standing with your shoulders back helps, although I can't really recommend doing that for the entire day. Ow. Also, shorter steps with one foot directly in front of the other.
Still trying to get a foothold somewhere with the whole Hollywood hide-your-stubble makeup thing though.
-
Thanks Reddyne for those I'll be sure to apply them all :D have you any picture for the wig ? (Ran one) ?
-
For cosplaywig on ebay.
Seemed like the best fit for what I wanted and the amount of maintenance as I just don't think I'm any good at really trimming these things yet. It has white highlights, which is okay, but still not great. It's got a nice flat blonde color to it though. I've seen other Ran cosplayers use a silver/whitish blonde wig before, and also bright, bright yellow. I don't think either really fit, and the YELLOW ones are almost visible from space. The only kinda fur fabric I could get for the tails was YELLOW too. I think the tails and ears will be okay even if they're bright because they're supposed to be fur and I had little choice anyway. Bright yellow wigs look unnatural, though.
-
I really really like this wig :O I really need it
do you have the name of the seller ? I found it .Like you said the yellow one are like the character but it's too much yellow
(I guess we should make a topic for cosplay xD this one is for otakuthon planning and yet we talk about cosplay xD)
-
Very interested to see how you plan to make the tails work; to this date I haven't seen anyone do a set of tails that looked right to me, and none of the Rans at Comiket even had tails.
-
(I guess we should make a topic for cosplay xD this one is for otakuthon planning and yet we talk about cosplay xD)
I always held off on it, even though I thought it would be a good fit in Alice's. Considering how I never contribute anything there, I'd feel better about it. Still, I dunno if it would be just the same 4 people or so talking about stuff they made.
Very interested to see how you plan to make the tails work; to this date I haven't seen anyone do a set of tails that looked right to me, and none of the Rans at Comiket even had tails.
My plan is to make a backpack of sorts out of nylon webbing and a large assortment of straps and latches. I'll put two bands of nylon around my waist and two around the top to form the backpack. Where the bands intersect, I'll put enough webbing to make a 3x3 matrix. Each part of the 3x3 matrix will get a latch. Each latch with be attached to a D-ring that is attatched directly to the tail. This makes the tails capable of being being detached for easy transport WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT. Each tail has a 14 gauge wire for support and allowing the wearer to bend it in the desired direction.
-
Finally put in my vacation time at work. The next month and a half can't pass fast enough. :3
-
yeah it's log to wait :) we're only saturday and I though we were monday already :(
-
I for one would be all for a cosplay thread so I can go on and on about the trials and tribulations behind my silly hobby and how OH GOD WHY DID IT TAKE ME 15 HOURS TO SEW A RUFFLE SKIRT AHHHHHH
I just got back from Anime NEXT where I run the game shows so I am most definitely looking forward to Otakon where I don't have any responsibilities other than see panels and events, meet fellow fans and consume adult beverages in silly costumes.
-
I don't have any responsibilities other than see panels and events, meet fellow fans and consume adult beverages in silly costumes.
same except for the beverage ^^ I don't drink much I better like to laugh about those who drink too much

ahaha ca't wait for next year :)

This doesn't make any sense at all.
-
Too many adult beverages.

Whatever you do, stay away from Mima's staff. And me, for that matter. =|
-
Sorry for feeling a little slow and newb to be humble, but is the Otakon a cosplay event as my instinct says?
-
...is the Otakon a cosplay event as my instinct says?
General Japanese cultural convention. Anime, cosplay, games, etc. etc.... see here (http://otakon.com/).

Dare I ask why? Cuz I wants to know, ne? :]

Let's just say I have a thing about drinks getting dumped on me while in costume. X]
we do have fun though~
-

hmmm I don't want any on my costume too :D
-
Ain't no MotK drinking party without Santa Claus and Wrench-Boy. ;_;
-
Eugxh. I'm still as terrible with alcohol as I ever was. I can stomach a bit of Bailey's and kahlua with milk, but not much else. I'm too depressing for anyone's good once I've had a few, which is typically also a few too many. Thing is, I'll have someone with me who might want to drink a bit, but she's been trying to avoid it recently. We'll see.
-
I'm too depressing for anyone's good once I've had a few, which is typically also a few too many.
This. Another reason why I avoid drinking.

Fortunately, I don't start dropping things when I drink too much, since that implies I have the dexterity to hold them in the first place. The only good news is I don't weigh too much, so when I finally pass out, it'll be easy picking me up. :3
-
ugh if everyone falls out except 2-3 ? we can't start picking everyone up ^-^

In that case, just kick me really hard. It'll work eventually. :derp:

Otakon guest Johnny Yong Bosch and his band Eyeshine will be performing at the first ever Otakon Matsuri Festival to be held on Thursday (yes...THURSDAY!) afternoon, July 28, 2011!
hahaha what
-
So, technically Otakon just became a four day con on the slide?
-
Such is the influence of JOHNNY YONG FUCKING BOSCH
-
hahaha what
hahaha what
hahaha what
-
hahaha what
What time is the show? :3
-
I don't know if they have that yet, but the whole fiesta is 12-4pm.
IMO it was long coming to have some sort of official Thursday shenanigans with a con of this size. Not that I'll probably be down in time as that'd mean MJP completely took off work that day.
-
Whether I'm there or not depends on whoever gives me a ride.
-
next year I'll take the train while wearing my cosplay :D but it'S still 12 hour by train -_-
-
I will only go if I can goldfish scoop while wearing an Ultraman mask on the side of my head.
-
I gotta say, goldfish scooping would be terribly unfortunate, since none of them would survive the weekend <_<;
-
Not live ones, the Goldfish crackers.
-
I will only go if I can goldfish scoop while wearing an Ultraman mask on the side of my head.
You'd be the oldest person doing this by a long-shot. Go for it!
-

True. There'd be many otaku hyperactive goldfish swallowings.
BRB, setting up a goldfish booth.
-
Geez, this got more busy after not checking it for a few weeks x_x
Anyway, room's full now, so that's good. I'm getting down to cosplay work, and I should be able to get everything I want done....
I'll be bringing a WHOLE BUNCH of new stuff, including:
Byakuren!
Shou!(FINALLY FUCKING FINISHING THIS)
Jin Kisaragi from BlazBlue!
and Kisuke from Oboro Muramasa!
Also Touhouvania Sakuya too. But I've had that for a while now.

WHEEE PLANE TICKETS ARE IN! LETS GO TRASH BALTIMORE!
Ain't no MotK drinking party without Santa Claus and Wrench-Boy. ;_;
Bros be knowin' that Inuyasha, Wrench-Boy, and Girl Scout crew yo.
-
Another favorite DRUNK BRO-TOKON moment of mistaken identity was when I was in my Witches 5 getup (http://rizyukaizen.deviantart.com/art/Otakon-2010-Dark-Lady-173769893) with 2 of my partners in crime (not pictured).
We got stopped by a few bros on our way to change out.
YO WHAT ARE YOU DRESSED AS?
We're Sailor Moon characters
No you're not
uh ??? ??? ???
And then they asked for our pictures.
Because we looked like some sort of space hookers.
Alas that's also my Meiling Wig which is nicely braided and not getting undone also I gained like 10lbs and hahahahah not walking around in a bra top in public anymore!
so no repeats of that brosperience in 2011.
...I wonder what they'll think of Mami :V
-
I am sad people didn't recognize Eudial, not necessarily because I love Eudial (haven't watched that season in long enough to remember) but mostly because it means they haven't seen S, the best season (that I've seen to completion).
Gosh, I really ought to be thinking about something I could cosplay without losing weight. At least room stuff got sorted out!
-
...I wonder what they'll think of Mami :V
They will say, and I quote, "Mami's mammies are the miracle of the universe." :derp:
-
Getting work has kinda throw a wrench in the works. I still plan on going despite work beginning a few week before Otakon. I think I have a good deal of leverage because I'm starting a week earlier than I originally expected. I made plans for this a long time ago, too, and I've already watched people get away with a full week off for similar pleasure trips at the start of a position. I don't mind two days unpaid time off, I just wanna go. Still, I'm not very keen on biting the hand that feeds me right from the get-go. It's very rare for me to miss work in general.

If that really is Mima in a toilet, then you've inadvertently stumbled upon quite the inside joke.

Makoto Shinkai as a guest?
:* :* :*
brb lining up for his panel already.
-
Makoto Shinkai
yessss
-
man there goes like 6 hours of my life between arriving early to line up for the panel and the autograph line. Now the question is should I have him sign my copy of 5cm or my copy of Voices...
-
I'm lining up with Voices, MJP will have Place Promised :V
It might not be that crowded given the high caliber of the American voice actors and the Jrock fashion show thingy which is all the rage or something.
Well I mean not that it SHOULDN'T be crowded, but Japanese industry guests tend to not get the mega-crowds.
Probably too soon for a showing of the newest movie of his alas.
-

isn't everything at Otakon just crowded and has a ridiculously long lone in general? Honestly never been in a line for a director but I know the seiyuu lines tend to be just as long as the American VAs
-
Hahaha in my brain I had added "except for Japanese VAs and bands those are always crowded" but I do recall reading somewhere, maybe it wasn't Otakon, but how it's like order of magnitude different for the lines for the Japanese director/animator/etc and Vic Mignonanona which was unsettling to a lot of longtime anime fans.
Then again, I think the only year I did the Japanese industry guest autograph thing was 2003 and I don't remember the line so it must not have been that crazy. That was also the year with TM Revolution which was huuuuuuuuge so that might have diluted the lines :V
-
Well, looks like I'm not going. Need to be in town on weekends for the next four months to check in on my jury duty status. Sure, the chances of actually getting called into a trial are slim considering settlement ratios and all that shit, but yeah... :V Just in case. Being a part of the legal process or a bit of geekery? Sorry, geekery.
But hey. Time to start saving for next year. :3
-
Just a heads up, we have 4 and could conceivably take 1 more to split up the room costs. We're Thu-Sun at the Holiday Inn.

What the heck crazytown do you live in where you are pinned in place like that? It's almost like the citizens are the criminals in jail :o
I'd try calling and be all "oh hey no refundable tickets this weekend" because that's bananas.
-
I think what he's saying is he'd rather have the chance at being in jury duty than missing it because he's at Otakon.
-
Whoops! I reed gud.

Otakon is all weekend. You at least don't have to worry about Saturday and Sunday, right? And if you get called on early in the week, you're safe. Well, in the end, it's up to you. We'll miss ya

Ain't no MotK drinking party without Santa Claus and Wrench-Boy. ;_;
I'm Super Wrench Boy (http://i839.photobucket.com/albums/zz319/Cruxios/MimaAcen2011-1.jpg) now! I ran over a tempura power up.
More under aged drinking!
Talked with some people on IRC and skype and put in a request to be recognized as having these two places and times held for a photoshoot since a great number are already claimed on cosplay.com's Otakon sub-forum.
Friday - 9PM - Indoor Fountains (you know, the big one)
Saturday - 3PM - Third Floor Terrace (spot with great lighting that was moved from last year, accessed from the hallway that connects the main buildings to the skywalk)
That thread is accessed here (http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=244947).
-
It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to have the Madoka costume for Otakon. I'll have all the money I need... But not for another month.
(Also, if they're gonna charge $45 for shipping, it should at least be fast shipping! :V )
-
First year I'm gonna try to actually pick up my badge early. If I can do that, I won't have to arrive until at least 9 A.M. It beats waking up early just so I don't have to wait in sweltering Baltimore morning heat to get in.
-
bring me back some pictuer :'( and one of your ran costume reddyne
-
Anyone going have room for one more? XD
-
so I was pretty sure I wasn't gonna make it and then my friend just mailed me my prereg and a train ticket
; 3; so happy
-
First Otakon, going with a friend as Demo Suika and Soldier Yuka from TF2. Feeling pretty hyped~
-
Anyone going have room for one more? XD
You're asking this waaaaaaaaaaaay way way too late. =.=
-
I HAVEN'T BEEN ON THIS FORUM FOREVER
So yeah, I can't believe its already been a year since last Otakon. I was Aya with my friends Momiji and Hatate. This year at Otakon, I am going to cosplay as Nue Houjuu... and my friend who was Momiji last year will dress up as Shou. Hatate from last year won't go to Otakon this year, so its just the two of us this time.
Sorry to like, come up randomly in this topic, but where and when are the Touhou photoshoots/panels going to be at this year? We are going to attend all 3 days (hopefully) , but only half of Friday. Also, are there gonna be any other UFO cosplayers?
And also, I am still trying to construct my Nue wings and I am sort of stuck on deciding how I should make it. Any ideas?
-
You're asking this waaaaaaaaaaaay way way too late. =.=
I thought I had a room up until this weekend, only to find out I obviously didn't, just grossly misinterpreted something someone else said about the topic.
-
Genichiro, you're in luck, we may have room for one more. PMing.

You and your friends were adorable and I cannot wait to drag mein wife into another photo with the lot of youse. :3
As to the wings, what you could do if you have access to it: Wonderflex. It's a stiff plastic that comes in sheets. Thin enough to be cut by a good pair of scissors, stiff enough to hold up. Make two cuts of each wing thing, hot-glue them to stiff bent heavy-gauge copper wire, seal the edges, bada bing. I am not exactly King of Crafts but it's lightweight and will attach quite well and easily to whatever kind of harness you're rigging up.
-
MJP has his plastics mixed up - what he's thinking of isn't Wonderflex, just styrene plastic sheeting. Both which could be used for wings but not necessarily my first choice on their own.
You'd want something sturdy yet lightweight especially since they're not symmetrical. My suggestion would be to use craft foam(ies) since it cuts and glues very well and it comes in various sizes and thicknesses and colors. Or foam board, also available in a bunch of sizes at craft stores but then you'll have to paint. Still use copper wire from Home Depot as a framework.
As to actually attach them to you, I'd imagine making a harness to wear under the dress would be best, but I can't speak from experience. Dr. Google probably can help though!
-
bring me back some pictuer :'( and one of your ran costume reddyne
Augh! Ran won't be done until November!
-
Ugh :O what will be your cosplay then ? I need picture anyhow ^^ pick some of the hotel room for next year
I have to tune my voice to be able to reproduce this girl's voice wish me luck xD one year to do it

-
Ohoho don't worry about pictures - heck, usually there's a few that show up during the con itself!
Both the wooded base musket and thigh highs arrived today for Mami~! I will be a busy bee the next 3 weeks ahhh.
-
Oh, they've got the new FMA movie I didn't even know this was a thing :o
Also I maaaaaaay have made a contract with QB to help promote Madoka Magica ohhhhsnap now I really have to finish this costume post-haste!
-
ffff I hope I'll have enough room in my luggage for my cosplay : (
-
What do you need to fit and how are you traveling? Props or just costumes/wigs?
-
What do you need to fit and how are you traveling? Props or just costumes/wigs?
two costumes, two wigs and one prop
I only have one suitcase and my friends and I are heading to canada after the con so less packing space for cosplay
might have enough room for mokou but I don't think I'd be able to fit murasa's anchor anywhere : (
-
might have enough room for mokou but I don't think I'd be able to fit murasa's anchor anywhere : (
Meh, Otakon's held next to a harbor. Just pick one up there.
-
Yeah I'd imagine the anchor would be tough but you can still bring the outfit if you wanted I can't picture it taking up that much space or comedy option - pull a Momiji and drive in it :D
Also turns out MJP forgot to prereg us yay late comer idiot tax :fail:
But that's ok because there are many /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ antics in my Otakon future to make up for minor setbacks!
Now if only this costume would sew itself....
-
If the anchor is too big, make a hishaku instead.
-
What's that?
Is that the US Madoka Magica premiere and producer (http://www.otakon.com/guests.asp#Iwakami) that just got announced?
:toot: :toot: :toot:
I actually knew about the former for a few days but only found out that there was to be a Madoka-related guest a few hours ago but not who :o
Yeaaaaaaah I think you can guess where I'll be hanging out for a good chunk of the con.
EDIT: oh and special apperance by Uematsu on Friday (though I think most of us saw that coming) Well done, Otakon. Had me worried for a little bit but I think this is the first time in a long while I'm psyched for as many guests/industry things as I am this year!
-
I met with a friend of mine yesterday and he mentioned that he might be interested in going to Otakon, but hadn't made any major plans for it yet. My room is likely to be packed, so I doubt I'll be able to squeeze him in there. I'm not exactly a fan of doing this with a mere 2 weeks before the con, but I've got a quick question for anyone still out there: Is there ANYthing in the way of ANY free space in ANY of the rooms? My friend's nice, neat, and built like a stick, so he can easily hide away in a corner if space is tight. I'd just like to see what is available because he still needs to figure out his own plans for getting down there in the first place.
-
Also turns out MJP forgot to prereg us yay late comer idiot tax :fail:
I'm in the same boat because I don't get paid until next week... Gonna have to wait in line.
I am also looking forward to the same things as you too, triangles! :3
-
Reddyne - I think we are full, but I'll ask MJP or maybe he'll swing in here or something. On the other hand, if your buddy doesn't mind rooming with complete strangers this and next week all sorts of message board will be swarming with "need another person had a last minute dropout!" I know this since we were in this boat in 2009 and filled the extra spot on the carride down off the SA forums.
-
Hey Reddyne, our room has a space open!
We're in the hilton(The one you guys stayed in last year I believe?).
Let me know if Triangle's room doesn't work out. :D (We really need people ;_;)
-
Our room is indeed full so yes take this fine gentleman up on his offer ^^^^^
-
I wish someone could hook me up with a free badge, but alas, I must put down the $75. The reality bites.
-
No free pass between the artist's alley and the dealer's room for me this year, ahaha :(
-
I wish someone could hook me up with a free badge, but alas, I must put down the $75. The reality bites.
Press credentials!
Though I got that through DHS/TSA's agency newspaper...
-
I had a chance at a "free" badge, but I'd have to work a lot more hours during prime con hours than I was willing to with all the stuff I actually want to see this year - Otakon is my Relax-o-con as I'm not a department head unlike my last one and thus shouldn't book my weekend to the gills (even if I'll still be volunteering with them at some points during the week but in much smaller doses!)
I am sort of wishing I took it (though a certain husband of mine was like NO YOU CANNOT GIVE UP THAT MUCH TIME) but I'd really be kicking myself if it made me miss out on Shinkai stuff.
-
Man, it's really weird how they got Atsuhiro Iwakami, Madoka's producer, but no other staff from the series. They should have tried for some of the Madoka seiyuu or a director/animator or two. I'm sure there's much more interest in that than no-name seiyuu for Noboru Ishiguro's new show.
-
Well, my boss cancelled my trip, so you don't have to worry about me causing problems again this year.
Have fun, everyone!
-
OK
I hate being /that/ guy, but I'm going to have to.
To people in my room, it is currently 8 days before the con and I thought I made it very clear I expected payment no later than 2 weeks before the con. I CANNOT take money at the con and I CANNOT afford to cover for an IOU.
If I don't get a significant number of people paying up by Friday I will cancel the second room. This is not a warning nor a threat, this is a promise. I'm sorry if it screws with your con plans but I thought I made it very clear I needed prepayment if you were going to be in my room group. I literally cannot take payment at the con or an IOU, I don't have a credit card nor the funds to cover anyone.
So far only 4 people have paid me, 4 out of 15 people. I am very pissed and this is completely unacceptable. Don't be surprised if next year I demand payment up front before you join in. Sorry to those who were responsible and paid ahead of time like I asked.
-
so they ARE doing a premiere of Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below. They had to drop something to keep the hype up through comic-con.
-
There was pretty much no way that they COULDN'T have Shinkai there and not show his most recent movie.
Though if you checked the premieres page it's been listed for about a week already so I thought they had made it official :V Clearly the website folk and the dates-o-announcements folk didn't jive properly!
EDIT: Fan panel schedule's up:
Touhou Project Panel 6 Friday 9am-10am
At least you're not up against the masquerade this year! :V
-
Were the times randomly assigned because 9am on Friday what the christ. On Saturday or Sunday it would be even worse but still.
-

Well that doesn't sound too bad, wonder if they had this panel opening because of how packed it was last year? I just hope I'm able to get in fast enough, I remember last year I barely made it in by 9:30...
-
Man, for everybody cosplaying, just hope and pray that Otakon weekend wont be as hot as this weekend currently is. The average temps in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area at the moment are 101F and that's not even including the heat index.
You better believe if it's gonna be that hot I'm gonna use the nearest Crino cosplayer to cool myself off. :)
EDIT: Fan panel schedule's up:
Touhou Project Panel 6 Friday 9am-10am
At least you're not up against the masquerade this year! :V
That panel had a "club styled" line to get in even after the room filled up last year, even with the masquerade going on...
EDIT: I just looked at the panel list and already see a conflict.
Japanese Figures, Toys and Collecting Panel 5 Friday 9am-10am
Touhou panel or figure panel? That's a damned tough call to make right there.
-
The doors to the convention center don't open until 8:30, sounds like the short end of the stick this year
-
Touhou Project Panel 6 Friday 9am-10am
rrrrrrrrrrofl
Otakon NEVER schedules super popular shit in the wee hours of the morning. So obvious someone new and inexperienced did the scheduling.
-

What about that Yu-gi-oh abridged series panel last year? That seemed pretty packed and started early.
-
On the other hand, they know you guys will fill the room regardless of when they put it.
At least this means you're also not going to be up against the Shinkai stuff!
-
Omg, why is it at 9. I get off the plane at like 8. Arg, touhou cosplay meetup later?
-
None of the panelists will even be available for it, but Kilga's talking with the panel scheduler, we'll see what they can figure out.
-
Honestly, I would advise against moving it - they've probably already printed the forms, so if it changes it'll only be noted on the back of some pamphlet that no one reads.
-
uuuuuuuuuugh I have to get up in the morning now
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh
also are there photoshoot times yet
-
Honestly, I would advise against moving it - they've probably already printed the forms, so if it changes it'll only be noted on the back of some pamphlet that no one reads.
Erm... if the guys running the panel can't even make it to the panel, not moving it just guarantees a no-show, right?
-
Oh, man. The earliest I'll be in Balty is 1 am! What the heck?! Will all of us have managed to get our badges by that time?
-
If you show up and say HEY I AM A 9AM PANELIST HELP HELP they will let you in early to get them. I speak from experience :derp:
Now if you mean not available as in not physically in Baltimore.... Though looking at the schedule unless you can find another panel that needed to switch there doesn't look to be much dead-space.
-
Erm... if the guys running the panel can't even make it to the panel, not moving it just guarantees a no-show, right?
Oh!. <_<
I thought Momi meant the touhou shoot. My brain doesn't work.
-
Otakon doesn't officially print/post photoshoots beyond the forums.
According to cosplay.com they're set for 9pm Fri at the fountains and 3pm Sat 3rd floor. I'll be around the Friday one as the Aniplex GET ALL THEM MADOKAS gathering is during the Saturday one (I got rejected from volunteering doh)
Ahhh I have 6 days to finish sewing EVERYTHING AHHHHHH.
-
I heard there were gonna be 4, but I have no idea where the times come from... ^^;
-
The plus side: not much on Saturday, so MAIDENS DRINKING PARTY WOOOOOOO
-
Is anyone here doing Yuugi? My Suika demands a drinking contest :colbert:
(fuck i'm a lightweight)
-
According to Bruce, our options are to keep the panel where it is and pray we all make it in there in time prepared and ready to go (FEI this almost assuredly will not happen) or we pull the panel entirely and pray some other panel cancels so we can vulture their time slot (we'd basically be at the top of the wait list).
I am honestly leaning toward the second one, partly because I am not at all confident we will be in the building, let alone prepared, at 9, partly because 9 AM is not going to get much attendance beyond the already-fans and having a lot of newbies makes the panel so much more fun, and partly because I would be surprised if the entire rest of the schedule stayed intact. Otakon veterans would probably know better than me about that last one, though.

The second sounds a bit better more because it seems like the 9AM slot is more of a dead-end unless you want an entirely different crew running it.
-
Also, while I put this out here to see what the populace wants, I would definitely like responses from fellow panelists, so if any of you see them puttering around IRC while I'm at work, link them this way. The sooner I respond to Bruce, the better.
-
I vote the latter in that we hope something happens to someone else. Makes me feel like a terrible person, but hey what can I do.
-
Whether it's 9AM on Friday or a last-minute rescheduling some other time, you're not getting an optimal audience. Go with option 2, at least you won't have the Friday morning stress.
-
Worthless sacks of shit. >_>
-
partly because 9 AM is not going to get much attendance beyond the already-fans and having a lot of newbies makes the panel so much more fun
While I'm aware you don't want to run the panel because your panelists won't be able to show up at 9AM and it's not the main issue, keep in mind a Touhou panel will be packed to the brim no matter what time or day it's run. I was at a friend's Friday 9AM mahjong panel last year and it was nearly filled. I find it hard to believe a Touhou panel wouldn't get people out the door at the same time.
You may not get the same audience (and not the one you want) of a normal, less bad timeslot, but it doesn't matter as much as you think. I still have no clue why Otakon doesn't tell their panels department heads every single year to make sure the popular panels get prime late afternoon/evening schedule space... But it wouldn't be Otakon without scheduling fuck-ups everywhere!
-
I should point out that last year's Mahjongg panel was completely full and it was really early, so I wouldn't count on it being empty. I'd worry more about you actually being able to make it.
-
Yeah, Script Fairy's not confident we'll make it either.
I just sent the note to Bruce. We're pulling and hoping for a time we can make. If nothing opens up, then my preemptive apologies to everyone that was looking forward to it.
-

Situation is bullshit IMO. No need to apologize.

NOTE: THE ENTIRE DAY HAPPENED SINCE DRAFTING THIS REPLY
I don't think in theory that timeslot is as much of a problem as people fear - I've done a Friday 9am panel once and it was to capacity, and it was something academic sounding. Keep in mind that NOTHING ELSE is going on - no Dealers Room, Art Alley, guests, video games... it's only fan panels and some anime showings so you actually have *less* competition for relative newbies who want something to do right after getting in. It also may have come down to room size - you guys got the 2nd largest panel room that also hosts a number of guest events, which get first dibs on the schedule.
I dunno, as someone who has worked in panels/programming/etc at cons unless you put on your application OH HEY WILL NOT PHYSICALLY BE IN BALTIMORE FOR 9AM FRIDAY and still got that slot, I hope nobody makes a huge fuss at the con staffers for this :ohdear:
***AFTER READING WHAT I MISSED***
I was going to suggest option C) keep the slot but Dropbox any digital materials you can and see if you can find substitute panelists for any remaining spots up front so at least it runs in a somewhat familiar format. While there probably will be a panel dropout between now and con o'clock, odds are it'll be in the room with a little-to-way less capacity you'd have at the original slot. But guess I missed the suggestion boat on that :V

IMO, I still think they dropped the ball big-time on Kilga and Co. over this, especially considering how the other cons have treated their panels (especially like the holycraphugepanel at AB). Pretty inexcusable.
-
man my wig is so frizzy and I can't find my comb anywhereeeeeee
-
man my wig is so frizzy and I can't find my comb anywhereeeeeee
Wait...how are you supposed to fix this? Wash+comb? cus I have the same problem. I heard about something like detanglizer/etc but I have no idea what to do.
-
I had actually been considering leaving it there and just getting up at ass o'clock Friday morning so most, if not all, of us could be ready for 9. People commenting on full 9 AM panels did not go unnoticed, nor did the room size, and it also occurred to me that Friday 9 AM would be a useful vehicle for advertising the photoshoots (anyone who was the AB Toohoo events saw for themselves the gigantic leap in population from the Friday shoot to the Saturday shoot). But really, I didn't want to force that sort of early wake-up time on anyone.
We'll see what happens. The room we had last year was the smallest panel room they have IIRC, second-smallest at best. We have a decent shot at getting a bigger room than last year just by sheer chance, which is more important to me than keeping a death grip on Panel 6.
-
leaving in like ten minutes
see you all at the con <3
-
SEE YOU HERE RYUU!!!!!!
-
Eff yeah, one more day (kind of).
-
Ohsnap it is true I leave tomorrow :o
Looking at the full schedule looks like most everything I want to do doesn't conflict huzzah! Shinkai signing overlaps a bit with Nobuo Uematsu so I'm hoping that will be in my favor so I can bolt in time to be with all the Madokas for that premiere.
Ahhhh so excited for this con!
-
This morning I was panicking that all of a sudden I don't have a ride to the convention for Friday... but I'm glad that that problem is all solved now and I am able to make the most of all three days of Otakon.
A few days ago I finished my whole Nue cosplay... Thanks a whole bunch to my friend (who unfortunately can't go as Shou this year because her cosplay will not come in on time so shes going as Phoebe from Pokemon)
1 month has now become 1 day until Otakon... wow.
-
Okay, just to reiterate. The panel is currently canceled, so I guess we can use the photoshoots as a surrogate meetup. The photoshoots are still as they were:
Friday 9PM, Indoor Fountains (far east side of the BCC)
Saturday 3PM, 3rd Floor Outdoor Terrace (outside the cafe, east side of the BCC)
-
I was about to ask if there was any news on the panel, but I assume at this point if no one else dropped it's a no-go :(
Were there any other common events people were eyeballing? I'm set on Madoka premiere and Shinkai stuffs if anyone wants to band together.
-

yeah I'm pretty set on the Shinkai autograph, panel and the premiere. the Shinkai Q&A panel is at the same time as the saturday Touhou shoot though... As for Madoka I'm probably going to hop in near the end to catch Episode 3 (THE BEST EPISODE) and the Q&A session. I think the Madoka photoshoot supposed to happen after too.
-
Yeah after the Madoka premiere/panel there's a shoot, so I'm going to do the World's Fastest Costume Change to do that and then Touhous at 9pm :derp: (and am I nuts for thinking of wearing Meiling first Friday, switch to Mami for Madokatimes, then change again?)
MJP tells me there's a promotion if you buy 5cm/sec from the Bandai table first 100 people get a Shinkai autograph token, anyone else hear this? We don't own that movie yet so we're doing that :V
-
I have a private photoshoot set up for Friday at 5 for me and my Momi... other than that I think I might go watch Kamen Rider V3 on Friday, and Utena on Saturday.
-
Who wants to make me feel less like a pathetic loser and more like a BRO AMONG BROS by going to the K-On concert and/or moe panel with me? ;_;
-
- Check in the hotel at 4:30am
- Get to the hotel at 8:00am
- Crash for 3 hours
YEAAAAHHHHH
-
wait momi i didn't know you were here already you should have told meeeeeee
i'm so lonely right now ;-;
So i stood in the heat for 2 hours, except that the line was only for pre-reg, so I have to stand outside tomorrow. On the plus side, the hotel room has free wifi!
Who wants to make me feel less like a pathetic loser and more like a BRO AMONG BROS by going to the K-On concert and/or moe panel with me? ;_;
I'll consider it, depending on the time!
-
Slow day at work, so postan's safe for now.
20 more minutes and I'm free. After that, it's the 100m dash to the car then the 400m run to the T station after a short trip. After an 7 hour nap to make up for all the sleep I should've gotten instead of goofing off train ride, I get to step in the car of a strange older man in a place I've never been to before.
Oh bother. This year's preparation for Otakon has had more trouble surrounding it than I care to mention.
-
On way to hotel right now and then shower and prereg lineup. SO EXCITED
-
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE
Panel's BACK ON.
11:30-12:30, Panel 2, Sunday.
Hope to see you there~
-
Been running around collecting everyone, and only got a 3 hour nap in the hotel room this morning. So tired. =.=
Also, looks like I'll be Momi-ing it up three days. Kind've a stretch but oh well.
-
Triangles and her crew are in the room NEXT DOOR TO MINE out of pure coincidence.
This hallway is now Touhou alley.
-
Hey! Jana and MJP and triangles are RIGHT NEXT TO...
/me sees the post above her
OHHHHHHHHHHHHh...
-
Aw man, I wish I could be there, but, you know, I live in the other side of the world...
-
I'll be herp derping tomorrow and sat as mokou so if you see me before the photoshoot, say hi ' 3'
-
I totally got in to my hotel around 1pm and slept until like 6, was totally burned out. I didn't do much except go out to eat at Cali Tortilla and pick up my brother's badge.
My hotel is in the middle of nowhere and it sucks, I'm all the way up by Mercy hospital and it has to be at least a 10-15 block walk to the con. It's nowhere near the light rail or any other transit options.
At least the room is nice and I'm not paying for it :V
-
HEY TRIANGLES
JERSEY SUCKS
-
Help I want to go to sleep but they won't stop playing Suguri and making noise. T-T
-
Totally not used to sleeping at night. Don't know what I'm going to do first, but I'm going to do it! (After I get my costume on)
-
HEY TRIANGLES
JERSEY SUCKS
HEY KILGA
IT WAS FINE BEFORE YOU GOT HERE :V
I'm a lazy monster so now that Touhou panel is Sunday I'll be wearing Mami for most of today/tomorrow and only doing one costume change each day oh boy!
Also TOUHOU ALLEY is like tornado alley I approve of this name. Come visit we're here!
EDIT this is actually triangles if you couldn't tell!
-
Touhou Alley: it's like Hogan's Alley with 200% more guns.
triangles is beginning to get dressed. Wearing Meguca is suffering ;_;
Also, who the fuck thought it was a good idea to remove most of the Harborplace food court - INCLUDING THE GODDAMN WONDERFUL DELICIOUS SOUTHERN BBQ PLACE - for an H&M?
Caltort, ho!
-
You know, seeing mjp squeezing into triangle's costume would be funny to see.
(I'm staying with them, for anyone looking for me)
-
Oh god I walked for like ten minutes and my ribbon is falling off already ;;
-
I turn to idly walk out the window and I see a Suika and Yuugi walking down towards the BCC.
All right, which ones of you crossed between the Marriott and Holidy Inn at around 9:22 AM?
more Touhous = best Otakon ever
-
I can't get onto IRC today for whatever reason, but I'm looking forward to seeing everyone!

YAY CREDENS JUSTITATUM~
Sola is my best singing buddy! We totally dueted the harmony/melody of the song.
Also I do not brain, as I put on my heels again for the Girls With Guns shoot as Homura. YEAH NOT A GOOD IDEA. I am healing now though. Being Meguca is suffering o.o.
I think I was the only Shiki at the con. I got to beat up a Komachi =D.

Hm, that's strange. I'm seeing a whole lot of text, but no photos.

wheee back home. I'll get around to uploading some photos tonight for you guys. I wasn't there for the Friday photoshoot or the impromptu shoot after the panel but I got plenty of pics from Saturday's touhou photoshoot.
in a completely unrelated note. Makoto Shinkai took a picture of me and my friend on friday and tweeted it. http://lockerz.com/s/124825898 I'm pretty sure I told everyone at the con already but just to make sure I need to fangasm a bit

I got to meet Makoto Shinkai and shake his hand and he complimented my Mami costume and thought it was nifty I teach science and used Voices to explain relativity and thought it was nice that MJP and I were married and loved his movies and and and and and I'm a silly fangirl basically.
He did ask about MJP also being in MORNING RESCUE. My theory is that it's the Japanese equivalent to dressing up as the Hamburglar.
-
This just in: interchanges 3, 4, and 5 all take you to I-295, which runs directly parallel to the Turnpike and get you spit out onto Route 1, which then can let you jump onto the Turnpike AFTER all the Six Flags and car/truck lane split. After that it's a clear run back to 1918 town, ya hoser.

Also MARYLAND SUCKS
Was it Silentsword we were driving next to? Delaware TOUHOU plates? If so, I greatly enjoyed exchanging gestures with you as we drove through MARYLAND SUCKS traffic. I also enjoyed seeing everyone and hanging out at the con. Hopefully next year I'll get to be the dude version of the little girl and have fun too.
GOOD TIMES

Was it Silentsword we were driving next to? Delaware TOUHOU plates?
Correct indeed!
Waiting at the airport with Greyn; our flights are in about 9 hours. We have wifi access thanks to McDonald's though!
-
Finally got back home not too long ago. Con was awesome, 1 hour and 40 minute late Greyhound bus, not so awesome... >: I'm shocked the engine didn't give out.
Now checking through the photos I managed to snag up.

Stuck in Cleveland, should have been home an hour ago, first day of work tomorrow, plane in Philly for maintenance.
Words cannot describe how hard I'm facepalming right now.
-
Good to see everyone had a blast at Otakon! Wish I could have been there, but I made my decision not to.
...And I paid for it. No having to go to Jury Duty last week or this one. I... I could have gone!! :colonveeplusalpha: Well, okay, there might have been another factor or two (may have only barely had enough money, some scheduling and hotel availability issues cropping up...), but still. Oh well, I used some of what money I had collected to buy myself a PS3, so I suppose it's not all THAT bad in the end. :V
...Oh who am I kidding. :fail: Maybe next year (or maybe AUSA... ...or something...)?

I just joined the forums here (actually happened upon this thread while I was phone-googling for the location of the second photoshoot this weekend), but I wanted to say hi-- I was the lone kappa hanging around Friday and Saturday. I had a really good time at the photoshoots and panel, and got approx. eleventy-bagillion pictures, which I will post some of on the flickrs soon.

Oh hey that's my arm and poofballs. Also Triangles' Mamicurls were nice.

The Mamicurls are indeed fabulous. I felt awkward since people kept being like OMG HOW DID YOU MAKE THEM??? and my answer was "send money to China and receive wig in the mail please please ask me about how I made basically anything else instead! Got home a little while ago, after an exciting trip up 95 full of turns I didn't remember existed and other turns I could have sworn went the other way. Very thankful no one was in the car with me for that hour; I wasn't actually falling asleep, but it was impossible to keep focus for lengthy periods of time. Thankfully all of Eastern Massachusetts shuts down at about 10 PM or so on Sundays so the roads were empty.
Exciting weekend capped off with the exciting discovery that my computer refuses to load Windows! Oh boy! I'll be relegated to my phone for the time being.
-
Kilga...I hope things get better...I'm glad you made it home safe...
-
Just made it back myself. Pretty good weekend. I caught up on sleep, played a lot of shmups while abusing free play and infinite continues, and got to meet most of you even if I'm not that talkative in the large groups. Camera says I took almost 300 pictures. Wait till tomorrow before I put them up.

Anyway con was fun. It was nice meeting you all and I hope to do it again. Maybe next time I'll have more time to hang out beyond the photoshoots rofl
Leaving Baltimore now to head to ~*~Canada~*~. I miss posting on a computer

Ugh, Kilga, that is a horrible drive that I am very familiar with (my family lives up near Boston, so I have to drive up there from VA once or twice a year.) Did you take the GW bridge? I have started taking a crazy-ass way all the way through NY state and western MA just to avoid that very bridge.

Don't worry, I know well the perils of the Gee Dubya, and we avoided it at all costs both down and back, much to the chagrin of our GPS. I've found the Tappan Zee tends to be more tolerable - it's not always trafficless, but it's almost certainly much better than the Gee Dubya at any given point in time.
My route to the Mid-Atlantic these days is 90-84-684-287-Tappan Zee-Garden State Parkway. I know 84-15-91-15/Merritt Parkway also works for getting to 287, but even Jersey is better than CT-15. At least Jersey has things to look at that aren't trees.

Home at last, running on fumes, so much work to do so little sleep.

Otakon was a great, great time once again.
Makoto Shinkai is very chill and down-to-earth. Hoshi o ou Kodomo was alright. It worked decently as a fantasy piece, but it didn't have anywhere close to similar emotional response as Hoshi no Koe and 5cm. I didn't feel for the characters that much. They didn't feel as much like genuine real people as Shinkai tends to depict brilliantly. The pacing was very off. It felt like six episodes of a TV series at once packed into 20 minutes towards the end of the movie. Tenmon's soundtrack was once again extremely good. The technical side of the movie was a significant step up from 5cm, though I didn't care for the character designs over Shinkai's other work. Shinkai commented on how less "realistic" designs were intentional though.
My Little Pony and Madoka cosplay took over the con. Daryl Surat's Anime's Craziest Deaths was awesome. It was even better because the audience was very new-school and hadn't seen Angel Cop, MD Geist, Baoh, or much of anything. Noboru Ishiguro is always very interesting to hear from. He has lifetimes of industry experience.
Apparently I'm going to write an in-depth convention report for the front page at some point.
I took over 100 cosplay photos and such. Highlights include a Heavy who looks right out of TF2, blazingly hot Sucker Punch protagonist, professional tier Mashyu, a real dog dressed up as Okami's Amataresu, very cute episode 10 Homura, Madoka with an impressive bow, and much more. http://www.flickr.com/photos/linkington/sets/72157627208963181/
-
Persona cosplayers good.
-
Persona cosplayers apparently got kicked out of their shoot spot Friday night by the Ryukishi shoot organizer. Persona then proceeded to break the 100 cosplayer count while Ryukishi got 40 if he was lucky. That was kinda awkward.
I'm sure Sillentsword and Yucari could provide more details than I, though.
-

If you need halpz with tech, I'm here for you. I do work in Tech Support after all... you know how to get in contact with me.
In any case, Otakon was pretty awesome. Lots of fun times, lots of fun people. However, I almost caused the Touhou panel to become derailed by not doing my job on the panel. I must and will test more to be sure that we have no issues for the next time I help with that. Nvidia's drivers were probably what screwed us, I had a developer version of the drivers installed for some performance GPU computing I was doing and then I forgot to replace them with the standard ones before the panel.
-
Wall of text time. Cons are so wonderfully friendly and communal. Everyone shares hugs and wonders about the big manhunt going on at night. Still, I wasn't hugging the cabbie that drove me down there as I seriously doubt he wanted one and I still haven't been able to find out anything about that apparent manhunt. I also refuse to proofread all this.
Lily Black cosplayer Friday, Koakuma cosplayer today. Great stuff.
Yuuuup. Any con with 3 Meilings is a great turnout in my book.
I'mma thinking about Koakuma for next year, since I am lazee :O
It's a nice closet cosplay even if there are a couple of things you need to cook up yourself.
Crab Battle where?
This was such a strange and pleasant thing to watch. It was comical as much as it was entrancing to watch. It was a thrill. With darkness and silence through the night.
LIVEBLOGGING THE TOUHOU PANEL AWWWWWWWW YEAH

I think we did pretty well for the most part outside the little errors. Lots of heads-up backup when things weren't going the way we wanted them too. Hurrah for being prepared otherwise. My trusty thumb drive was at the ready.

Now that's a REAL hoot. I missed Nobuo AGAIN because I had 0 time to look at the schedule and originally got it in my head that his autograph session was 90 minutes after it actually was.
This just in: interchanges 3, 4, and 5 all take you to I-295, which runs directly parallel to the Turnpike and get you spit out onto Route 1, which then can let you jump onto the Turnpike AFTER all the Six Flags and car/truck lane split. Welcome aboard! And if you look around, you'll find that you probably bumped into many of us as about half of us cosplayed a Touhou in one form or another . Not to mention that a few of us were part of the panel.
Oh god I walked for like ten minutes and my ribbon is falling off already ;;
WAIT. Were you the Index Accelerator-what's-his-face guy at the panel on Sunday?

Man that was awesome! We need some more PC-98 next round, ne?

Gotta say.
I saw more Homestuck cosplay than any three other shows combined. At least.

i read mspa before it was cool and i was like the only person who knew of it
,
now everyone knows it and they dress up as it, it kind of scares me. :derp:

WAIT. Were you the Index Accelerator-what's-his-face guy at the panel on Sunday?
No I was Mokou. I think I know who you are talking about though
-
All of you Touhou cosplayers wore my camera out, just so you know. :( I couldn't hang around too long to holla at you folks because all of the other photoshoots popping up at the con.
Y'all folks are cool people. Now to put my pics up when I have some downtime...

My life has been enriched knowing that such a cosplay existed. Thank you good sir.
Anyways, pics I took are up. Still using derp Photobucket (http://s69.photobucket.com/albums/i43/kiroax2006/Otakon%202011/) because lazy. Also, the red eye removal tool doesn't work well so after a few feeble tries, I gave up and didn't fix anything. A few of the Friday night photos suffer from red eye as well as overall blurriness. :fail: The pics on Saturday were much better due to the lighting. There are some good pics throughout, but here are some highlights:

Oh wow, those are some pretty good cosplays on the photos there :o
Nice work all of you!
And MJP's Morning Rescue made me crack up.
-
I love how my Tokin was messed up for the Friday shoot. Never rush out the door to a shoot, kids.
-
And MJP's Morning Rescue made me crack up.
It made his ribs crack up, too. He ran in late and actually dove onto the concrete to get into that shot.
-
That sounds painful.... but looking at the resulting shot it was worth it V:
-
Oh, it was plenty worth it for everyone else there.
-
Speaking of MJP's MORNING RESCUE
Watch this video. Specifically, at 2:00. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCBkZHkH-T8)
Oh yeah I guess I'm in there too in my Madorable-ka Magica getup.
-
Gawsh, do I arrive so late. I was told of this place by... eff, I forget names.
I was that wigless Princess Wriggle. I was planning to bring a wig but it became bad and I hated the colour so much. orz

So, now that I'm single, I miss Otakon the year that not one but two cute Ayas attend?
Ah, well, they're probably underage anyway (if my poor judge of appearances in the past is any indication) </sourgrapes>

Holy crap. I've got the other people in the office looking at me suspiciously now as I'm laughing my ass off. Great work, MJP.
-
Yay welcome! Your Princess Wriggle was adorables :3
AMMY!
YESSSSSS COME BACK YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO :V
What's great about the video is originally it was just the Madoka girls. We were standing up in the flowers being all elegant or something. And then MJP comes back with my sammich, and there was another one who was tagging around the main photoshoot (they pulled one of each lady) and we're like OH HEY MORNING RESCUE GUYS and here we are now.

I'm the Aya on the far left. And I'm 21.

Ahaha, that is awesome.
How do you view that? I get the obligatory Germantube block, and when I try to watch it via proxy it shows the video to be of 0 seconds length and clicking play results in it being over instantaneously. :derp:

HI I'M THE YUUKA FROM FRIDAY AND SATURDAY HIIII
It's always nice to have more people joining the forums, but it's nicer when it's cool con people. Welcome!
-
Damn, these pictures are making me wish I was there. I couldn't go because of money, but I'm going to see about next year :3
-
So the hotel reservation system got leaked, so much for it going up August 8th :V
-
I'm just going to get a room outside the Otakon reservation nonsense again next year. <_<; Much cheaper.
-
Wait where do you go then? I was under the impression that if you wanted a room near the con center you were paying double if you didn't go through Passkey/Otakon rate.
-
Corporate negotiated rates. I usually get rooms for less than $125/night; this year I got around that much for a room at the Sheraton Inner Harbor.
Edit - also, you'd be surprised re: the otakon rates. I've found in the past that some hotels charge more if you tell them you're there for the convention. Perhaps that's changed in the last few years.
-
I actually got a hotel outside of the Otakon rates. o3o $179 per night when I book'd wif the Hampton website. Had two bedrooms and a sofa... but it was a biiiig room. I think we're gonna try to get that similar room next year.
... Wait wut, next year reservations already? I don't even know what cosplays to do! *fffffffffffffffff*
-
So the hotel reservation system got leaked, so much for it going up August 8th :V
Where?
-
Edit: Big thanks to Kiro and Link for sharing the room. Next year I'm definitely getting a place with two beds though, even if it is a bit pricier.
I'll be up for sharing a room any year!
-
Where?
MJP linked me this morning but I dunno where he found it
http://t.co/fVQqAUK
...not that we know who's going to be in it other than myself and husbando but details details. Maybe this year I can convince my sister to come so I can dress her up as some sort of adorableness :3 :3 :3
-
Well, I just booked at the Days. Hooray for being close and cheap!
-
Yeah we're doing Holiday Inn again I think. I found the Days Inn to be cramped if you have 4-5 people + costumes, but maybe we just happened to get loser rooms the years we did it.
-
It sounded like the Holiday Inn/Days Inn were at least more the way to go than the Radisson, from what I heard. They had microwaves and mini-fridges, which would have opened possible snacking opportunities from the lovely world of pop-tarts and space tuna (those little tuna-to-go things.) The Radisson was not fantastic, I have to say. We could totally hear through the walls (luckily we did not have gregarious neighbors...) Also, there was a window in my shower. Why?
And also! The pics we got from photoshoot #2 are up on my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sleepy-slug/sets/72157627339907296/
-
We still got the space-tuna and rice cakes since we didn't know about the fridge/microwaves, but I will be abusing them next year ohoho.
Ahhh Saturday shoot! I was off Being Meguca and didn't make it but THAT'S where all the moonbunnies were that we missed on Friday!
-

I've been at the Days before, a few years ago, and it wasn't so bad. We managed to get six in plus costumes without being too cramped, but since it's so cheap I might try to stick to 4-5 people just for the extra room (and so everyone gets a bed, haha).
-

yay I'm actually in that one!

That is also the best picture.
There were so many The Best Pictures this con.

This is my personal The Best Picture so far: Me and Kilga, (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Kaiserin/Otakon%202011/5995074195_a5be2c250b_b.jpg) because I do enjoy how hilarious the comparison is.

The resemblance is strik-

I can't wait until I'm able to Brohou it up. I seriously wouldn't mind wearing just any dang Touhou costume from China but there is zero way I can pull off anything remotely feminine enough to look like the Touhou equivalent of Man-Faye. Think a mix of Wolverine and Reimu, and not in a good way, bub.

I'm almost tempted to get this done for next Otakon... If not me, someone better do it! Brilliant!

In Touhou 14, Reimu's bomb will go *snikt*

Heyo, friendly tactical videocamera guy here, I've started uploading all of the various film I took (I say, as if any consumer grade camera uses film these days), but as the total collection ends up being somewhere on the order of six hours and seventy odd gigs, it's gonna take a while. However, I can at least say that at this point Touhou Photoshoot #1 and some of the karaoke is up, so feel free to head on over to http://www.youtube.com/user/IonicFox.
Also YES triangles, I saw that video earlier today as I was getting my stuff up. I thought "Oh, a new acksonl video WAIT I KNOW THAT PERSON." Awesomesauce all around.

I think you really sold Morning Rescue though. I think it was that open-mouthed smile as you slide into the shot. Jesus, I'm laughing just remembering it.
And welcome, Murein!
-
Christ, I never realized I was so terrible at having my picture taken... Most shots of me look awful because I'm making a retarded looking expression.
-
Man, Byakuren is getting put on hold for an undetermined amount of time. Also, my wig annoyed me <_<;
Thinking of updating my Yuka cosplay for next year, and should have Koumajou Densetsu 2 Yuyuko, Shikieiki, and Shou to choose from next year~
-
I wouldn't say retarded, more like easily amused. Also, someone PM'd me and I can't PM them back yet, due to what I suspect is too low a post count, so to that guy, email me for a response.
-
I was that wigless Princess Wriggle. I was planning to bring a wig but it became bad and I hated the colour so much. orz
I remember seeing ya at one of the shoots and at the panel. I thought that was awesome how you responded to that question at the panel about wriggle being a boy or a girl. XD
I also really liked that whole Morning rescue cosplay, I wish I was at the Madoka shoot to see you guys jump in on that.
-

That was fantastic. It couldn't have turned out been better if we planned for it.

I am insane and already have rooms :O
I literally have no life ;_;
tl;dr if anyone cares we're in the Holiday Inn for next year so if you want to block your rooms in party zone there you go.
-
awwwwww yeeeaaahhh pahty zone
I was that wigless Princess Wriggle. I was planning to bring a wig but it became bad and I hated the colour so much. orz
Hopefully, you can find a nice one by next con. Are you going to keep it to a short green wig? If you need help, there's an Adventures in Cosplay thread that lists a few good sources!
-
Everyone's wigs annoyed them. :V
I've totally sworn off long wigs for next year after trying to make heads or tails out of Meiling post-washing. Of course, now that I say that watch me decide to go make Suika or Keine or something for the next con and the cycle of cursing out long wigs begins again.
-

We must bring back Touhou alley!
-
We must bring back Touhou alley!
How many rooms in a row did we have in total? I only knew of 3.
BTW, I just saw that morning rescue Youtube thing, awesomeness.
-
I think it was three, but still, what are the odds of that happening, right?
-
Touhou genderswap art, y u no actually masculine and just full of bishonen? D:
I would kill for an actual proper genderswap - not to dissuage the upcoming Dr. Eirin House, MD - but still, come on, Japan, hook a goateed brother up ;_;

I KNOW RIGHT
Justice for the gallantly facial-haired!

(danbooru warning for all of those)
-
None of those have anything regarding the clothing to use as reference to sewing D:
My brain has ideas but ugggggh.
Maybe I'll try to sketch out what I have in mind for MJP (and if you give me some character ideas I can make one for you too Edible~~~ :3) and someone who has more art skillz than me may take pity on my 2nd grade abilities and fix it up.
-
I... I didn't meant to be there conveniently. o3o I honestly thought I came in late to the panel but eventually I heard "OH HEY! WE JUST HAPPEN TO START 10 MINUTES EARLY! 8D"
Also, that wig issue. I want a green or teal short one... ish. I unno, The way I imagine Wriggle's hair is something of a reverse-mullet. Short in the back, long in the front. Too bad I can't style hair. orz
-
I can't cut wigs for the life of me, either. I tried to just shorten some bangs once for a Karin from Shadow Hearts outfit, and yeeeah, it was kind of a disaster, so I'm never doing that again. I have this lovely lady cut mine instead (including the Nitori one): http://lizzy.agentsofcosplay.com/
-
Ahhh Lizzy! I met her way back when, she is totally awesome!
Khaoseru - check out the Adventures in Cosplay thread! I know a few of us collected a list of wig sellers we like. You may even be able to find that style premade. If not and scissors still are scary (which I totally understand I ask my friends to snip my wigs though I swear I'm going to learn one day!) I think a cute bob would be great for Wriggle and I know I've seen them in all sorts of green and teal shades online :3
-

Wow, I actually found her off of cosplay.com back in February, was going to use her for a costume commision. Guess she's pretty good indeed.

I reject your reality and substitute my own. Thus, manly Touhous might exist.

I have to admit to being partial to this one:

That's great, haha.
(We have size limits on images, though, so I edited your post)

Thanks, I was just actually about to do so myself. Got interrupted by warring cats.

Okay, it took a while, but the Touhou panel is finally up and organized. For the true con experience (ie waiting in line) go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bToM8Le3gE, and for those of you that want instant access: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruSvrVrOOFo. Also, the subsequent photoshoot is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fSquAGGRKE. Finally, I've also put up the few karaokes of people I recorded, but as they're somewhat scattered about my channel, I will leave the task of finding them upon the viewer.
There are a few more videos I'd like to get up (the Girls with Guns photoshoot runs to mind), but as they aren't strictly Touhou related, (and I'm uncertain as to when they'll actually make it up) I probably won't post when they do. Anyway, thanks all for watching!

Many does not necessarily equal muscular. D:
Zun needs to make a Touhou of receding hairlines, glasses, and nebbishness.

There's the AyaMomi photoshoot I did on Friday! The photographer likes telling stories, so we told the story of how Aya is the most abusive tengu in the universe but also will succumb to blowing bubbles.

Your Momiji is very good at looking so very put upon.

Uhmm hello everyone.. I apologize for replying 2 days after the last post (and not posting until now) but I was cosplaying as the Ran Yakumo on Friday.. (The female one). It was my first con so I was a bit nervous and I wasn't good at poses, but I was happy to see tons of Touhou fans, and other female cosplayers.. I'll be going again next year, too! Dunno what character to be (But it WILL be Touhou!! :D)

It was a first for me, too. No need to be nervous, though. Just pose in a way that makes you feel comfortable, and smile.
