Title: Periodic Artist Challenge - 10-Minute Drawings | 1-Minute Music - Alcohol!
Post by: Dead Princess Sakana on February 14, 2011, 05:29:10 PM
Hello Artists,
look at the monthly art challenge,
now back to me,
now back to the challenge,
now back to me.

Yeah, that one ran dry. But let's not worry, because something new is coming up right here right now.
The problem with the old challenge was likely that it required a lot of work, which didn't easily fit into busy schedules. So we thought of something new to bring some fresh air into AAA, something that will require much less time from the participants and can therefore be run more frequently.
For now I'm thinking either weekly or biweekly depending on how many entries we get.

The Periodic Artist Challenge - 10-Minute Drawings | 1-Minute Music

Actually this isn't a single contest.
It is two contests, one for music, one for drawings.
If you wish so, you can submit entries for both contests.

Rules

10-Minute Speed-Drawings

1-Minute Music-Arrangements

Prize
The winners of each category will be given Special Member as a prize, plus bragging rights.

Challenge-Archive:

#1 Valentine's Day of a Curse Goddess (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8471.msg553958.html#msg553958) - Winners: Taku (Drawing), Ormsdale (Music)
#2 Faith! We need more faith! (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8471.msg565825.html#msg565825) - Winners: bennesley (Drawing), Flamezero (Music)

Current: #3 Suikaaaaaaaa! What are you doing!? (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8471.msg585096.html#msg585096)

First theme: Valentine's Day of a Curse Goddess

The deadline is February 21st, one week from now.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to message me or ask here.

Have fun being creative, everyone~

As the voice of Shanghai, I am pleased to say she will be entering the drawing challenge.
I take it there won't be any objections to my submitting her artwork for this?

EDIT: Scratch that, I just got my answer from the first post. >.<

On another note, since the music entry can't be more than 1 minute long, is there a minimum length requirement?

Hmmm i'm just tryin to get as close as possible I guess. Couple seconds either side of 60 is the goal, but I reckon anything over 45 seconds or so should be alright?

Yeah. If you are confident you can pull off a good entry with only 30 seconds then feel free to, but it shouldn't be shorter than that. Around 60 sec +/- some is the goal. I won't disqualify anyone for a 70 seconds entry :V

Definitely no problems with that. Entries by proxy are unusual, but there is no reason why not~

That's because crafters are obviously inferior and crafts are not art enough.

Also I could try and give this a shot

If you don't need more than 10 minutes to make it, I could take it as a valid entry :V

Well puitting the indivual parts together shouldn't take me that long. Because the time it takes to sharpen pencils and set your medium doesn't count :V

My hand was shaking after this. Having only 10 minutes to draw is intense.

Textures were added outside of the 10 minute time frame.

I don't want to share the concept of the pic, since if I did it right, you guys should get it. Hopefully, I didn't fail. Serious concept is serious. orz

Speed vector drawing isn't too fast D:
Took 11 minutes so i didn't really have time to add the last laces on her ribbon[attach=1]
(oh and 5 minutes planning, though i think time on that doesn't count right?)

I forgot how much time it takes to get vector curves right so it ended up funky lol

[edit]
as to what a random sign is doing in the middle of the night, i have no idea either

fixed link

enlarged the pic to make the pixels less obvious

EDIT: I'm sorry, but imageshack automatically flips my image to 480x640 for some reason, and I can't fix it.

This is apparently what I can draw in exactly 10 minutes. No shading, no hair cleaning, no nothing. Very bare bones.

I am not very creative am I? :fail:

In retrospect that doodle I did looks like something a small child would draw. Hina looks like a babby.

... This composition is definitely hurried & rushed up to its exportation & MP3-tagging x_x;;... I only knew of the challenge 3 days before the deadline...though I know that's no excuse. :ohdear:

EDIT: Don't mind the short, corny titling. I'm not sure how it would be related to Valentine's Day as I kinda focused on it being happy & jumpy or something, while maintaining the curses/bad luck(lower-toned piano) floating around Hina.

That said ~ Deadline Hit~

Judging starts today/tomorrow. Might take a few days this first time around since I have to round up some people first, so please watch warmly.
I already would like to thank all the participants, it's nice to see some activity here  :D

Uwaaah, I-I'm much honored...! Thanks! >///////<

I'm supposed to include the MIDI when I submit. Just that I kinda got too rushed today that I forgot to bring the MIDI with me :ohdear:...
I'll upload it here once I get online again. (provided I don't forget :ohdear:)

I'm not awesome at piano either. I just got that from the many random piano scores & not-piano-scores I've heard so far.
I originally didn't think it of it as a piano-only music, too. Just that when I composed it to Synthfont with all-piano, stuff happened, then there's the rushed finalization... >.<;;

...Erm, warning though, some notes of the second-voice piano or something are kind of unplayable ()... I had 2nd thoughts about forcing what my musical comprehension tells me to, or follow the rule to make it as real-piano playable as much as possible :ohdear:...

Swingin'n'Spinnin' (http://tindeck.com/listen/rksu)
What a nice coincidence that both of our piece is in a...uhh, how do you put this... "3/4 beat that notes tend to skip the 2nd beat" or something..... Eeh! Anyway, your music's beat sounds very similar to mine. xD
What's not similar is that this one sounds finely done, unlike my rushed one. Also, it definitely has notes away from the original Hina theme, but still sounds so much as a Hina theme!

*listens on a loop*
I can totally imagine a quick Hina mini-game that ... This is oddly appealing~ ?D
*hums it even during dish-washing*

And here we go

~ Judgement Time~

First of all, thank you everyone for entering this contest. It's a long-term goal to get some constant community-activity into AAA, and the quick-draw challenge was originally an idea suggested by Nobu to achieve that. Very happy to see this turn out well.
Second, we will continue this challenge as biweekly, meaning there is two weeks per theme for you to submit entries. That's a time long enough for many people to participate, while at the same time not so long you all get bored, I hope   :]

Now for this weeks judgement (which I had to do alone because I was too late in securing me some helpers. Apologies for that, next time will have several judges for sure :fail:)
(Anyone who is interested and doesn't plan to enter the contest, feel free to PM me about this)

First, Drawings: And the winner is... Taku. Congratulations.
This was a very hard decision. Bennelsey, Trance, Noname and Shanghai all drew very nice Hinas, Slaves' mischievous one was very amusing.
Now while the art-style is very nice for Taku's drawing, that isn't the main focus of judgement.
Rather, I am still looking at the picture and trying to figure out exactly what is happening there.
Is Hina jealous at the happy couple in the background and trying to curse them? Or is she taking away their misfortune so they can be happy? The way the dark aura flows towards/from the hearts makes both an option.
From my view this picture can be interpreted in several ways, and that's what makes it stand out this time.

Now, Music: The winner in this category is... Ormsdale
This wasn't an easy decision either. Lloyd and Flamezero both provided some very nice music there. Maybe it's just me, but I got some latin vibes from the flamezero's guitar there. Lloyd's piano piece was very pleasant to listen to as well.
Ormsdale's entry got me by surprise. I had the feeling I was listening to some old video game music there. This, and the speed, helped convey the "happy" tone of it very well, in my opinion, which makes this the winning piece.

Now for the new theme. I let the Keine-bot on the channel roll for a character, and here is who we got: Kanako Yasaka

So the new topic will be:

Faith! We need more faith!

The Deadline is the March 11th, a Friday. This will give the judges the whole weekend for their work.

Have fun, everyone~

...*cough* A-anyway, uhm...uhh, was there something I should say again...? Oh yes.
Congratulations to everyone for a great first period of the challenge~! Eheh, kinda figured Ormsdale to win this music one. =w=

This time, though... Th-this tiiiime...! I'm going to put so much faith in you when you hear this Kanako theme! So much faith that you'd cry! >x3

...Iiih, it's not Suwa Foughten Field that plays in my head everytime my music-composing/remixing side is hyped... Instead it's Grave of Being, the stage 6 theme of MoF/before you get to Kanako. x_x;;

Posting a humming preview of an ambient Grave of Being (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4299736/Composition%20trials/Ambient%20Grave%20of%20Being%20preview.mp3).
I find myself humming its main melody wherever I go, even when I'm in a netcafe, so I just...had to make this non-entry music one, too. All I have to do now is...clump all these other instruments together in harmony, and everything will be fine... If only it wasn't that hard to do---*shakes head* No time worrying, let's start clumping!! >x3

...If I don't make it, I might...resort to remixing Suwa Foughten Field to something technically more easier to adapt it to.

odd, i have the first entry
3rd panel took 9 mins because i didn't need to mess with colors and layering, so i added two more panels as a filler lol

parodying some comic that described kanako's shimenawa as some sort of round bread, decided it *should* be bread altogether for the charisma break

uuuuuu... 1:00 is so short, and suwa foughten is like a 2:50 long song at 170 bpm. this means HARD CHOICES!
I think I'm done though. I tried a lot of new stuff out, and it came out way better than I expected. Weird restrictions sometimes do that :)
Still didn't get to use as much of the original as I'd like!

This is probably a bit out of left field, but here's my super slow, atmospheric doom metal take on suwa: Sunrise at Moriya Shrine (http://www.echelon5.net/max/suwadoom.mp3)

It definitely fits the "melancholy" bill, huh? Hopefully still seems calm. Normally I can't get myself to work on atmospheric touches at all. And the clean guitar tone hates my picking :(

One minute is too short for this track. :c But I like it, especially the intro bit, it's pretty badass and makes me so oddly happy. I'm grinning like an idiot here after listening to it for the nth time.

Sounds good amigo. Only part that sucks about doom metal is the singing, so this nips that right in the bud =p

I'm sorry & Thank you so much for the extension...! T_T

I think what's kind of conflicting in the music's time limit is the usually slow tempo of ambient/melancholy/calm themes, so before you get to the nice climax part, it's already clocking a minute. What I'm working on is at 1:20-ish o_o;;...

...Though I'm thinking that it's not just a more-or-less 1-minute limit, but something like a range/idea to compose/remix something short.........eh, I don't know how to explain it accurately yet :ohdear:...

I noticed the extension and listened to some of the submissions, so I decided to try and make something for this challenge.

Hello artists, my name is Sakana, I suck at proper time-management, and this is: JUDGEMENT!

Okay, after way more delay than I can be excused for, let's do this.

First of all, the DRAWINGS

You guys made me crack my head here. I like both submissions with their idea and their execution, and I can barely decide on a winner. I have to choose one, of course, but it's only a win by a small margin because both are pretty much equally good.

But for the choice... it falls on bennelsey this time.

Autumn's Soviet Kanako is hilarious, and the details like the small city and Suwako's reaction are very nice. Kanako's faking of her godly attributes in bennelsey's pic caught me by surprise even more  though.

Now, the MUSIC

This was a bit easier, though all three entries were very nice to listen to. afterthought's and SMS' entries, though certainly being way calmer than the original, as was the task of the challenge, seem to give off a rather menacing atmosphere in my perception. It sounds like calm, yes, but the calm before a big battle, with dark clouds on the horizon.
That leaves us with one:

Flamezero, your piece takes the prize this week. The guitar as an instrument really fits here, it makes for a calm, relaxed, almost melancholic tune.

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you everyone who entered. Continue with your good work~

Now, for the next challenge's theme:

Suikaaaaaaaa! What are you doing!?

It's spring, and that means flowers, cherry blossom viewings, and of course, warm sake under the full moon. But some drink more than others, and then there are the oni. What will happen when little Suika lets loose and enjoys spring the best way she knows: with lots of drinking.

The Deadline is April 10th, so you have about two and a half weeks.

Have fun and good luck~

Now, for the next challenge's theme:

  • Music: Suika's theme Onigashima in the Fairyland ~ Missing Power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gP3J--2-HA) is already rather fast paced and lively, your task is to arrange it in a way that would fit either an absolutely drunk, or a hungover Suika

Play like im drunk =O No problem~

Haha I was hopin that if I kept throwin entry's ya, id win eventually =p
thats a good strategy. i should do that too. in fact, if i dont submit any entry i won't win, right? yeah.
unfortunately i can never make short songs :<

Ah, fair enough. I like my dissonances so menacing is hard to avoid  :V

Hmmm. I'm a fan of Suika and her theme, but its another long one. Not settled on how to make it fit the challenge theme yet. Loud music plus hangovers just sounds headache inducing, so maybe I should focus on drunk Suika :P

Took me about 11 minutes including few contrast edit. Needs some refining, hey, that was fun while it lasted.

I've probably misinterpreted Suika's powers wrong, (which I have I guess) so this entry might be inaccurate.  :ohdear:
(I mean, she can make herself bigger/smaller, so does that apply to other objects?)

Anyways,
This is Aoshi reminding everyone to use their power responsibly during drunken parties. (http://oi52.tinypic.com/m4wmw.jpg)

My deepest apologies, this contest literally got lost under a pile of other stuff that came up for me, and at some point I plain forgot about it.
Feel free to scold me for that ~_~

Anyway, I'm sorry I can't deliver a judgement at this point, so I will just declare the thread contest closed and ended for now.

Thanks to all the participants, there will definitely be other challenges for you waiting in the future ^^

that said, a challenge for the drawing artists is right around the corner, so look out for that~
