Title: Which game has the best music?
Post by: Letty Whiterock on April 21, 2009, 06:15:38 PM
Which game do you think has the best overall soundtrack? I'm going with PoDD, because it's all incredible. Every track. And it has Reincarnation.

definitely MOF, I cannot mention another game because MOF remains the only album of original ZUN music I keep, the rest I don't. I also have a detailed stored collection of all MOF remixes and doujin music, so yeah.

Love Sanae's theme the most btw.

Overall, MoF. Every soundtrack except PoFV and possibly SoEW is generally good though.

MoF.

I liked PoDD's, IaMP's and SWR's too.

Stage 2 is that rare type of song that is so catchy that I hear the whole song ringing in my ears.

I had to choose between MS, MoF, and PCB, but in the end I chose PCB.

I'll explain later when I get home though. I'm going now.

It's ridiculously close between PCB, MoF and SA. Probably SA > MoF > PCB if you held a gun to my head.

PCB/SA
I can't pick both... I guess I'll go for SA, 'cos the Neutral album (darkness) really made it shine for me.
Now whenever I play that game I find myself humming all the way through.

I've only played the windows games, so I can't comment on the '98.

MoF is a close runner up.
And of course almost all the games have great music  as it is.

SWR/SA are closely tied, but I picked SA only because I enjoyed the Darkness Album more than the SWR Orchestral one.

Either way I love all touhou music, they are all awesome in their own special way.

Choosing between my favorites SA, PCB, and MoF, I'll have to pick SA.

It was either IN or MoF for me; I've got 11 tracks I've kept from each.  SA is close behind with 10, and PCB only has 8 for me.  I went with IN, mostly because of Mokou.

Please, PLEASE, don't ever use arrange albums to help you choose one over the other. They're not originals, and therefore not ZUN's music. Anyone with great musical talent could make an awesome arrange of a terrible song.

Keeping this in mind, I chose PCB because I really liked the music in it overall. Most of the songs there are easily remembered by one mean or another, and I could to most of these songs many times and probably never get bored of it. It has many of my favourites such as The Fantastic Legend of Tohno, Phantom Ensemble, Border of Life, Ancient Temple, and many others. Also, it was a HUGE step compared to EoSD, which IMO was pretty bad in terms of instruments used.

MS had pretty good music as well. The are composed so well, it's a pity that they only exist in the PC-98 games. It's so nostalgic. I really love The Grimoire of Alice and Romantic Children though. Probably two of the best songs I've heard in the entire series.

MoF was also in the list because many of the songs are well composed that felt somewhat optimistic. Makes me feel positive and all. It also has one of my favourites, The Youkai Mountain ~ Mysterious Mountain. The instruments used were also well done. It also gave some old-fashioned folklore sense, but not in a nostalgic way.

Imperishable Night, obviously. The entire soundtrack is beautiful. Which is to say, I love regularly listening to *every single song* in the game, which is better than every other game, where I only love regularly listening to some songs.
Title: Re: Which game has the best music?
Post by: Helepolis on April 21, 2009, 08:08:04 PM
I am not worthy of voting becaus I have only listened to the EoSD / PCB / IN / MOF tracks. And even then I still cannot pick the best set of tracks, but I think PCB comes extremely close as choice. IN would be following up tight if Cinderella cage and Voyage were bit more interesting.

What simply made me love this game is the music which perfectly fits the stage or character. It doesn't matter if the spellcard is redicliously hard or easy. I just love music in our world as humans and also love how ZUN succesfully made music for Touhou.

If arranges counted, I might have switched to SA too; nazz-can's stuff is OBSCENELY good.  Then again, dBu's Pure in Asia wipes the floor with EVERYTHING as far as I'm concerned, so perhaps not.

Which game do you think has the best overall soundtrack? I'm going with PoDD, because it's all incredible. Every track. And it has Reincarnation.
Meh.  Strawberry Crisis, Vanishing Dream, Maniacal Princess, and maybe even Tabula Rasa were all better than Reincarnation, IMO.

I chose Perfect Cherry Blossom. It's the only game where I enjoy every tune as much as the next.

I'm surprised MoF got so many votes. The music in that actually annoys me at times, but then again, so does the game itself.

Very hard to just choose one, but since we have to, I'm going to go with MoF. Denying the greatness of that soundtrack is a crime; from Hina onward, every song is anywhere from good to absolutely awesome.

Imperishable Night for me.  Themes like Eirin's are just too memorable to ever forget.

I'm always torn between PCB and MoF.  I think MoF has the more consistent soundtrack, and I don't think there's one bad track on the whole album.  But, I find that MoF doesn't have an incredible song.  PCB has some hit or miss songs, but the ones that do work I enjoy more than MoF's songs, and it has some incredible tracks.  It probably depends on the day, but I think I lean slightly more towards PCB.

Lets see...

...Don't make me choose. ;_; If I were to say one, I'm just going to go with SA. Almost chose MS, LLS, EoSD, or MoF though. UFO seems set to beat SA if it keeps up the awesome boss themes, and good stage themes.
Title: Re: Which game has the best music?

PCB has been one of my favorites for a long time. I like both of stage 4's music, Capital City of Flowers in the Sky and Phantom Ensemble; and most of the track sounds somewhat... orchestral, if I had to put it into words. Following that, I also like IN's tunes, and recently SA really stepped in with some strong music like Satori's and Utsuho's themes.

Nono, that's not what I meant when I said the arranges made it shine... it's more like the arranges brought to my attention the best bits of the tracks.

I don't mean I like the SA arranges more than the PCB tracks, and that therefore the SA tracks are better. That would be silly.

Oh wow, now that I think about it, I think my choice is PoDD. o_O

The title theme.
Lost Dream
Reincarnation
STRAWBERRY CRISIS!!
MOLC
Fight it out!
Sailor of Time

Wow, I forgot I loved this soundtrack so much.

Of course every other soundtrack is great too.

its a hard decision, because very game has excellent tracks, but ultimately, i'm gonna have to go with SA, because of Nuclear Fusion alone.

sorry Necrofantasia, Suwa Foughten Field, Reincarnation, Mysterious Mountain, Doll judgeme.....

SA had my absolute full attention the moment the stage 1 theme kicked in, but a part of me does feel that the soundtrack is much more enjoyable to listen to while you're in the game itself - though this could be said for every game soundtrack out there, some soundtracks or songs will benefit much better within the context of the game than others.

The only song that didn't stand out to all that much was Hellfire Mantle, but it does feel fitting.

The only song in PoFV that bores me is Ancient Temple. The song itself is fine in PCB and fits really well, but in PoFV it just makes a match feel rather droll. Till When would have probably been a bit too hard and fast for PoFV's atmosphere, though ZUN really should have made a different theme for Youmu's stage much like how he did Flowering Night for Sakuya.

EoSD sounds old and crusty now. While some of the arrangements themselves are very good - especially Chinese Tea - and are perfectly listen-able, it just doesn't hold much charm to me because the instruments also sound old and a bit crusty. What I really mean is that EoSD feels very rough around the edges. Old is good when it's refined; it's how it lives through the ages and holds an air of nostalgia and charm. Something that's old and feels rough just ages and looks, feels and sounds outdated.

PCB is pretty enjoyable, but I must be one of the few people who don't regard PCB's soundtrack as highly as most others. I find Legend of Tohno and Withered Leaf really boring to listen to, I prefer The Doll Maker of Bucuresti way over Doll Judgement and I like Phantom Ensemble more than Capital City because it's noisy and loud. Ancient Temple proves to be nice and fits the stage perfectly, and Till When made me think 'fuck yeah' the instant it started. I also prefer the second version of Border of Life over the first. The first time I heard it was like the first time I finally beat the Elite Four in Pokemon Red only to find that Blue was now the champion: a resounding 'oh shit' in the back of my head. Both Phantasm themes grate on me after a while.

MoF is nice, but most of it I don't bother listening to outside of the game, or find thoughtlessly humming to myself. Dark Road and Native Faith are probably my favourites here. Grave of Being is awesome too.

IN is a pretty similar case to MoF. Reach for the Moon will forever be ingrained into the deepest recesses of my mind, periodically playing at times when I have no other thought in my head. I also found Night Bird and Cinderella Cage really enjoyable.

I prefer SWR's soundtrack over IaMP's, though there are a few cases where IaMP is better than SWR; namely Evening Star. I just prefer how SWR's soundtrack gives a much more lively atmosphere. The Ground's Colour is Yellow was an instant favourite for me.

Anyway, I'm droning on. I'm not going to say anything for the PC-98 games beyond: fuck yeah Inanimate Dream and Alice in Wonderland.

TL;DR: Opinions thread.

IaMP has my favorite iterations of Voile, the Magic Library and Septette for the Dead Princess. That's reason enough for me to make it my favorite.

Though, if you forced me to pick a game that had entirely original music, then I'd have to pick Perfect Cherry Blossom. I whistle parts of Border of Life all the time.

I prefer The Doll Maker of Bucuresti way over Doll Judgement

Wish I'd noticed this before I posted. I think you're the only person I've seen, other than me, who has this preference. Given how popularized Doll Judgment is, it's kind of surreal, honestly.

Urrrrrrgh!  Why does everyone like Capital City of Flowers Dancing in the Sky so much?!  That track is boring, boring, BORING!  Even Fall of Fall is better, and I don't like that either.  Stage 4 themes never seem to do it for me; Catfelt Fancy is about the closest I can get to really liking one.

Stage 4 bosses, on the other hand, are all really good.

I agree, Imperishable Night has great music. But I love the music in Mountain of Faith as well, from Stage 3 onwards. And really, anything from the PC-98 games, such as "Romantic Children". They all just have the greatest sound - gives me a feeling of nostalgia for some reason.
Title: Re: Which game has the best music?
Post by: UncertainJakutten on April 22, 2009, 01:34:08 AM
It's either going to SA or MoF. IN is close though, and PCB is what fights IN for second (third). EoSD brought us U.N. Owen Was Her, but that's about it for good songs, and even then I prefer remixes of that song. PoFV would probably be in third (fifth), despite having really good, catchy music, the tracks were (understandbly) too short.

And, from SA, my favorite song is somewhere between Yuugi's theme and Hell's Lulluby.
Title: Re: Which game has the best music?

IaMP, too many good remixes to pass up
PoFV would be next simply because of siki's\yuka's\marisa's\medicine's themes

Mountain of Faith takes God tier for, in order:
-Native Faith
-Suwa Foughten Field
-Gensokyo the Gods Loved
Gody all around soundtrack.

Though Imperishable Night gets an honourable mention for:
-Eastern Youkai Beauty
-Immortal Smoke
-Love Coloured Master Spark
Quite the soundtrack, but nothing incredibly awesome. Mostly catchy tunes that I can't get out of my head, like Voyage 1970.

Perfect Cherry Blossom gets a last minute pick for:
-Necrofantasia
-Border of Life
Decent soundtrack, I may remember everything but I can't say I listen to it regularly.

And I would kill myself if I didn't mention Subterranean Animism for Last Remote. I didn't enjoy most of SA's music, but Last Remote is in my top three songs -- easily. Sadly, it doesn't bring SA up in the list.

I'd probably have to go for SA on this one, actually.

- Lost Place was the first Stage 1 theme I really cared about, though it probably isn't as good as Tiny, Tiny, Clever Commander.

- Green Eyed Jealousy was also great, though for a very different reason. It was calm and hinted slightly at the disturbing, which was a nice touch.

- 3rd Eye is almost undoubtedly my favourite song of the whole damn series. Take the eerie from GEJ and crank it up to 13, then add the mental connection with one of the best fights in Touhou and you have a winner on your hands.

- Hell's Lullaby was surprising the first time I heard it. 'Come on, I'm walking through the flames of hell, the last thing I should be getting is calm, serene music- wait, actually, this song's kinda nice. Really nice, in fa- OH SHIT IT'S THE FUCKING CAT AGAIN'

- Nuclear. Fucking. Fusion. Enough said.

- Last Remote is the only Extra theme I give a crap about besides Centennial.

- Hartmann's Youkai Girl first seemed like it had been crushed and opened out again, wrinkles and all, but eventually I realised that it was taking the disturbing tones from 3rd Eye and cranking them up to 20.

Top songs from other games:
- Didn't really pay much attention to HRtP
- Darkness of the Cherry Blossoms (?) (SoEW)
- Strawberry Crisis (PoDD)
- Nothing really stands out from LLS, actually. :/
- The Grimoire of Alice (MS)
- Locked Girl (EoSD)
- Till When (PCB)
- Missing Power (IaMP)
- Immortal Smoke (IN)
- Wind God Girl (PoFV/StB)
- Sleepless Banquet (StB)
- Native Faith (MoF)
- Wonderful Heaven (SWR)
- Tiny, Tiny, Clever Commander (UFO)

Right now, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are IaMP's theme for Suika and SWR's arrange for Patchouli's theme.

Patchouli's SWR theme is simply inspiring. It really gets you moving, and it strangely contrasts with Patchouli's usual quiet and calm hikikomori tendencies. Odd.

Hmm, I suppose I'll come back to write more. I wish I had survived stage 5 of EoSD on normal just once to hear Remilia and Flandre's theme in-game....

PCB > MoF > EoSD = SA > IN > PoFV

PCB and MoF are the most consistently good soundtracks in my opinion, though I think PCB is just a tiny bit better.  Very few forgettable tracks, with a lot of great highlights.  Capital City of Flowers happens to be my favorite ZUN piece of all time.

EoSD has wonderful boss music(Septette is the best final boss music in the series imo), but the stage music is pretty lacking.  SA, on the other hand, has great stage music, but mediocre boss music (Third Eye is oh so overrated), though I really like Hartmann's Youkai Girl for some reason.

IN is pretty inconsistent.  I like the music for the last two stages (Except for Lunatic Princes), and 1970 is some of the best 1 1/2 minutes ZUN has ever written.  However, the music of the first half and extra never really jumped out at me.

PoFV... um... Flowering Night and Higan Retour are okay I guess...

Bah, you all suck. :P  And I think the original is the best version.

C'mon, though: EoSD has Cirno, Patchy, Stage 5, Sakuya, Stage 6, Remilia, Centennial Festival and Flandre.  I think that's fairly respectable.

While I'm at it: PCB has Withered Leaf, Doll Maker, Doll Judgment, Phantom Ensemble, Ancient Temple, Ultimate Truth, Border of Life and Necrofantasia.

IN: Illusionary Night, Song of the Night Sparrow, Deaf to All But the Song, Old World, Plain Asia, Maiden's Capriccio ~ Dream Battle, LCMS(included grudgingly; it's overrated as hell), Invisible Full Moon, Voyage 1969/70, History of the Moon (which I used to deplore as pathetic but has really grown on me), Lunatic Princess, and IMMORTAL SMOKE.

PoFV: Spring Lane (one of the most underrated songs in Touhou), Marisa's theme (which I cannot remember the name of), Flowering Night, Higan Retour, Fate of Sixty Years.

MoF: Dark Road, Dark Side of Fate, the Gensokyo the Gods Loved, Candid Friend, Mysterious Mountain, The Primal Scene of Japan (another underrated one), Faith is for the Transient People, Grave of Being, Suwa Foughten Field, Tomorrow Will Be Special, Native Faith.  Oh, and the main menu theme is also nice (Sealed Gods, I think).

SA: The Dark Blowhole (mostly for the part when Kisume shows up), The Bridge People No Longer Cross (highly underrated), Green-Eyed Jealousy, Third Eye, Lullaby, Hartmann's Youkai Girl.  And the ending theme is nice (the Earth Spirits' Homecoming, or something like that).

Everything from UFO is good except maybe the first two stage themes.

It's SA for me. MoF's tracks took a long time to grow on me while I fould SA's extremely catchy and memorable. I remember thinking "holy shit" when I heard Satori's and Utsuho's themes for the first time, and I was addicted to the stage 3 theme when the demo was out.

I'm torn between LLS and MS.
LLS: the best title screen theme of the series, Selene's light, Break the Sabbath, Perdition crisis, Sleeping Terror and Inanimate Dream. Maiden's Capriccio is also better than its IN incarnation.
MS: Dream Express, Dimension of Reverie, Romantic Children, Plastic Mind, Alice in Wonderland and the Grimoire of Alice.

The newer soundtracks (MoF, SA and especially the UFO demo) don't do anything for me. Nothing stands out. Although lately I've been warming up to SA, even to Hartmann's Youkai Girl. Well, excluding Hellfire Mantle and Nuclear Fusion. Those two don't qualify as music to me. They're more like background noise.

SA - Lullaby of Deserted Hell and Last Remote are some of the most amazing stage themes in the series, and all the boss themes fit the character you're fighting.

UFO - From what we've heard so far, TTCC is the best Stage 1 boss theme ever. All the other songs are pretty good, too.

MS - Dream Express, Plastic Mind, Judas Kiss, Infinite Being, Alice in Wonderland... Wow.

runner ups are PoDD, MoF, and SWR

Hm, you know, after just today getting as far as Orin's final spell card, I'm going to have to say that every single song in Subterranean Animism from Stage 3 onwards is just amazing.

So add that to my original list of MoF (from Stage 3 onwards), UFO, IN and any PC-98 game.

Out of all of the newer Touhou games, I'd have to say my personal preferences would be:

- Imperishable Night
- Perfect Cherry Blossom
- Mountain of Faith
- Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
- Subterranean Animism
- Immaterial and Missing Power

(didn't play SWR enough to judge)

IaMP's music isn't bad per se, but it's not very active, making it much more appropriate as background music, while the other games have more memorable melodies.

My top choice is Imperishable Night simply because of how powerful the themes are. Especially History of the Moon, which is probably the most epic Touhou song yet. Imperishable Night also seems to have a lot of atmospheric effects in the music, giving it a full feeling as you play thoughout. (ironically, this is my least favorite gameplay-wise)

Second choice, and I do believe most people would pick this one as top choice, is Perfect Cherry Blossom because the melodies are incredibly memorable and is essentially the standard "flavor" of Touhou. No other games compare to the classic melodies found in PCB, that's for sure.

I like the music in all the Touhou-games. Even if i hate UFO Lunatic, i can't deny that the game has awesome music.

My favorite soundtracks are MoF and PCB. UFO is great but hampered greatly by super-bland stage themes in S2, S3 and S6.

I dunno ... I find Shou and Nue's stage themes to be more bland.

Of course you did. :) Maybe i just don't like Sky Ruin because i like all its S3 Stage theme competitors much more.

To be honest, i really don't think there is a bad song in UFO. Except for S6 - That one just misses me so much. I know a lot of people like it a lot but i can't appreciate it. That's part of the reason i don't play against Byakuren much. If i could just start off right at the boss i would probably play her a lot more. She must be good for improving skills.

I had to choose between MS, MoF, and PCB, but in the end I chose PCB.
This.

MS and MoF have some stellar tracks, but everything from stage 3 on in PCB is mind-blowing, particularly Necro Fantasy, Ultimate Truth, The Doll Maker of Bucuresti, and Necro Fantasy.

No, that wasn't a typo.

Lets see...

  • PoDD has Kana's theme, Strawberry Crisis, and Reincarnation
  • PCB has Phantom Ensemble, Stage 5 music, Yuyuko's theme, and Necrofantasy/asia

PoDD has lost dream and reincarnation? I know which PC-98 game I'm gonna try and get hold of first then. You reminded me as well that I had an album I hadn't unzipped yet, "depth of phycoligy and unconciousness" with a brill lost dream mix on there. Which I just listened to now lol.

PCB is the best for me. SA and MoF are great, And in UFO Byakurens stage's atmosphere built with the music I think is incredible. (but otherwise, the themes have not stuck in my mind.) PCB however it all comes together brilliantly, its all memorable, personally think the whole games a work of art. once or twice nearly shed a tear at the end of yuyuko's stage, and I think the music alongside the soul chucking out everything its got left is what does that.

Dunno what the deal with IN is, all I remember from that is mokou's theme - and I've never even got to the extra stage playing the game  :V thinking on it though deaf to all but the song is good.

Of all the games, I think that Shoot The Bullet takes the top spot for me pretty much due to "Sleepless Night of the Eastern Country" alone. After that I would rank Phantasmagoria of Flower View as the second highest, with Shikieiki's, Komachi's and Marisa's themes all being top-notch.

Of course, if you'd also count Uwabami Breakers as fair ground it would take the top spot. Nothing beats the Lemuria.  :D

SA for sure. Yuugi's theme is the only track I don't like - I can easily listen to the others in a "playlist sequence" and enjoy every minute of it. Also helps that Nuclear Fusion is my favorite Touhou track of all time.

The only other games that come close are EoSD (once you get past the horrible instrument choices, that is) and MoF. The others that I've played have their fair share of good ones, but also have too many songs I either hate or feel indifferent towards.

MY favorite music comes from MoF

The best blend of music to stage in my opinion in MoF Stage 3.

Fighting cowboy faeries to the Gensokyo to gods loved is quite enjoyable.

Aside from that SA's music has had an influence on me

I can find tracks from each game that I like.

Tough to choose, as I like the PC-98 series music too. Between Reincarnation and Grimoire of Alice, I have some fave FM synth tunes. Still, it's harder to find a Windows game WITHOUT a couple of my favorites from the series as a whole.

EoSD has Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial and U.N. Owen.
PCB has The Capital City of Flowers in the Sky and both Boder of Life tunes.
IN has Nostalgic Blood of the East and Gensokyo Millenium.
MoF has The Gensokyo the Gods Loved and Suwa Foughten Field.
SA has Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye and Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom.
UFO has Captain Murasa (or just all of level 4) and Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind.
PoFV has...

Stepchild discovered.

Sleepless Night of the Eastern Country is god-tier, but it's also the only good song from StB. Wind Tour is nice, I guess.

For PC-98, PoD.D by far. Reincarnation, Oriental Love Consultation, Tabula Rasa, Lost Dream (overrated song, but still quite nice), and Fight It Out! are all wonderful. Honorable mention to LLS, just for Alice Maestra.

For Windows, MoF definitely. I like...well, just about everything that's not Candid Friend! Special mentions to Dark Side of Fate, Gensokyo the Gods Loved, Fall of Fall, and Faith is for Transient People (by far the best song in the series).

Candid Friend is fucking awful though.

I have to say UFO.  The only really meh track is Ichirin's theme, which makes sense because lolIchirin.

Candid Friend could have been done better, but it's still better than everything in the first two stages.  The tracks MoF did do right are very good, though.

I...cannot grasp the true form of Gigyas's attack your taste in music.  Not even close.

It's simple. First-time impression is very important in Touhou. For example, At The End of Spring and Cosmic Mind are the first songs that made me go wow (I started with UFO, mind you), so they instantly became the best S1 and S6 themes, respectively :V

I guess I'm the only person who likes Retrospective Kyoto though...

I was going to say that but wasn't sure if I was going into "too unpopular" territory.

Not every thing in the first two stages of MoF was bad.

I quite like apropatic god-dark road.

then again I feel I am less picky with my music

heck give me anything other than rap and I'll probably like it

That remix of Lullaby is great.
it gives the feeling of the epic entrance of a dictator. Slowly walking down the main road surveying all she sees, and utsuho said it was good. Then on the 7th day she rested.

Well, it's not that I really dislike PoFV's music, it's just that I think it's a weak entry in the series with Wind God Girl being the only song in it I truly like. I guess it's just generally bland and repetitive in comparison to the other games. Wish I could put it in better words because I think I need to present proper justification, but it's not like I have much going for me in the way of muzak terminology knowledge.
Title: Re: Which game has the best music?

For what it's worth, you're not really supposed to be listening to PoFV music - it's supposed to be background filler; it doesn't sync to anything like.  You wouldn't hear Colorful Path in one of the "real" games, for instance.

Also, Flowering Night and all of the remixes earn the overall soundtrack lots of negative points.

Chinese Tea, Locked Girl, Lunar Clock, Septette, Centennial Festival

Fantastic Legend, Doll Maker of Bucuresti ,Doll Judgment, Phantom Ensemble, Hiroari Shoots a Strange Bird~ Till When?, Ultimate Truth, Border of Life, Necrofantasy

Deaf to all but the Song, Plain Asia, Maiden's Capriccio, Love-Colored Master Spark, Lunatic Eyes, Voyage 1969, Gensokyo Millennium, Flight of the Bamboo Cutter~ Lunatic Princess, Voage 1970, Immortal Smoke, Eastern Youkai Beauty

Oriental Dark Flight, Gensokyo, Past and Present, Wind God girl, Higan Retour, Judgement of 60 years

Dark Side of Fate, Gensokyo the Gods Love, Candid Friend, Youkai Mountain, Primal Scene of Japan, Faith is for the Transient People, Suwa Foughten Field, Tomorrow will be Special, Yesterday was Not, Native Faith

Everything starting from Stage 3, also the stage 1 theme.

Tiny, Tiny Clever Commander, Beware the Umbrella Left There Forever, Traditional Old Man and the Stylish Girl, Captain Murasa, Tiger-Patterned Vaisravana/Bishamonten UFO Romance, Heian Alien

SA wins in terms of number of songs I like. For best songs, I can't really choose between UFO's boss themes, MoF's boss themes, PCB's boss themes, or EoSD'd boss themes. The music is all so good.

Well, I don't know, EoSD is the game where I like ALL the tracks but in the other there is ones that I don't particulary like, but some that I LOOOOOOOOOVE, like PCB :
Doll Maker of Bucuresti and Doll Judgment are by faaaaaaaaaaar overrated  I don't like them much (I don't like Alice either, don't know why), but I LOOOOOOOVE Ancient Temple and Border of life.
But yeah, I would say EoSD because it doesn't even have a track that I don't like, even the menu, even the Stage 1 theme, The Maid and the Pocket Watch Of Blood being one of my fav with Septette, Centennial Festival and U.N Owen (it seems that this song was too overrated that it became underrated)
IN is pretty high rank for me too.

For PC-98, I would say LLS, but this is too subjective...I just totally love this game.

And Erich's theme and all three of Vivit's themes (how'd you manage to miss those, they're only the best themes in the game).  Stages 1 and 4 are pretty sexy too, especially with updated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HM76IGdjc3E) instruments. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLTESTWZubA):*

To be honest, MoF only has about three songs that I'm really crazy about.  The rest are solid but never did much for me.

Illusory Science ~ Doll's Phantom > Magical Girls' Crusade > Dream Machine ~ Infinite Power > Girl's Divinity ~ Pandora's Box. Just try and prove me wrong :V

Incidentally, have a piano remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8YSriTkOHk&fmt=18) of the second one (sadly, it's a remix of the Goastly Field Club version, and not the original, but it's still better than nothing :P). This is a really well-done remix of the original version, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hx64Y6l7es&fmt=18) but the audio quality sadly is awful.

And Erich's theme
Am I the only person who's played SSG and didn't care for Magical Girl's Crusade?  I thought S5's theme was better, honestly...

I never really cared for Lullaby of a Deserted Hell, but I liked this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPhQCQ5NVwg) remix.

After looking up who made this, I found this.

How... This song... so joyous!

Bell of Avici ~ Infinite Nightmare is growing on me.
Sad that my touhou skills prevent me from ever getting to that point in the game.

Bah, you just don't have a good enough imagination.
EDIT: Typo, wtf.
EDIT: Also, Heartfelt Fancy. Doesn't Infinite Nightmare sound like Heartfelt Fancy?

EDIT: Youkai Modern Colony and Tomorrow with be Special, Yesterday was Not.

It has the overall feel of Heartfelt Fancy to be exact.

The only two Touhou songs I've found to sound similar to each other are Septette and Capital City.

Border of Life sounds kind of like Ho-oh's theme in HGSS. If you don't agree with me you don't have a good enough imagination.

-goes to listen to Ho-oh's theme-

On the topic of similar songs, the fast piano parts in Nemesis's Stronghold kind of resemble Treacherous Maiden ~ Judas Kiss, and Youkai Modern Colony reminds me of Captain Murasa. Double Spoiler music is neat in general, it has this dark/jazzy feel to it. (The game with my favorite soundtrack is probably MoF or MS, since they have lovely melodies in the stage themes and consistent quality.)

Yeah it does.  Certainly a lot more so than Heian Alien.
Title: Re: Which game has the best music?

^ It's either the different instruments or my lousy imagination but I can't find any similarities between the two :<
Title: Re: Which game has the best music?
Post by: Iryan on March 20, 2010, 01:41:04 PM
While Yokai Colony and UNO have some similar melodies, they have different instrumentation and don't really stand out from the song as a whole. Compare that to Heian Alien/UNO, where the main similarity is a similar melody played with the lead instruments combined with the similar tingling bell sequences that stand out in both themes.

On the other hand, after listening to Infinite Nightmare for a while, I began to see fairy maids dressed in blue emerging from the red-carpeted ground. Despite not having that strong similarities, it sounds strangely like Alice Maestra.

On the topic of most annoying ZUN trumpets: MoF music room, Candid Friend climax, two minutes into the theme. Luckily the song never gets that far when you fight Nitori...

On the topic of favorite soundtrack, well, you see...
ZUN's soundtracks are like a box of chocolates. There is too much awesomeness to choose a favorite.

S3: (MoF) Gensokyo the Gods loved
S3B: (SA) A Flower-Studded Sake Dish on Mt. Ooe
S4: (MoF) Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall
S4B: (IN) Maiden's Capriccio ~ Dream Battle
S5: (MS) The Last Judgement UFO's Esoterica almost got this
S5B: (UFO) The Tiger-Patterned Bishamonten
S6: (IN) Voyage 1969
S6B: (SA) Sun Worship of Gnosis ~ Nuclear Fusion
EX: (SA) Last Remote
EXB: (PCB) Necrofantasia. MoF's Native Faith and IN's Immortal Smoke are excellent as well.
PoFV: who cares all shit

MoF had the best music to listen to overall, SA had the best music to suit the game. UFOs was pretty good as well, but nothing stood out. IN had a few catchy dingles. Don't like PCB or EoSDs music as a whole, though there are a few decent songs. PC-98 is too boring to play so I don't know many of the songs.

You know, aside from the fact that games 1-7 have some amazing music, 4-7 specifically having a large majority of my favorites.

Can't really say much, since I've only played three of the games, and one Phantasmagoria, so I'm limited to three games, pretty much.

Title - Don't know, haven't paid much attention to the Title Screen Music.
Stage 1 - Illusionary Night ~ Ghostly Eyes (IN)
Stage 1 Boss - Stirring an Autumn Moon ~ Mooned Insect (IN)
Stage 2 - The Road of the Apotropaic God ~ Dark Road (MoF)
Stage 2 Boss - Deaf to all but the Song (IN)
Stage 3 - The Gensokyo the Gods Loved (MoF)
Stage 3 Boss - Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's Kappa ~ Candid Friend (MoF)
Stage 4 - Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall (MoF)
Stage 4 Boss - Love-coloured Master Spark (IN)
Stage 5 - Cinderella Cage ~ Kagome-Kagome (IN)
Stage 5 Boss - Faith is for the Transient People (MoF)
Stage 6 - Cemetery of Onbashira ~ Grave of Being (MoF)
Stage 6 Boss - Septette for the Dead Princess (EoSD)
EX Stage - Extend Ash ~ Hourai Victim (IN)
EX Boss - Necrofantasia (PCB)

Do I need to play more games? Yes, and I will, bit busy with trying to 1cc something on Normal, though.

I pick SWR.
Oriental evening sky, broken moon, darkening dusk, night falls ~ evening star, ridiculous game, flowering night, even locked girl. there's a variety of styles in that game, and the arranges all sound lovely to me, especially the ones I listed.
U2 knows how to make a bad song like flowering night sound good.

Fixed.

And yes, those you listed are also my favorites, though I'd like to give HMs to Fragrant Plants/Dancing Water Spray as well.
Wait, minus Evening Star as CtC's version is superior.

I think the technical limitations in PC-98's music is what makes it better.

I know I already listed SA as my overall favorite, but seeing all these lists makes me want to sort my fav's out too. Only EoSD, PCB, IN, MoF, and SA apply.

-Stage 1: SA. Upbeat and has a good melody. A great way to start out the game.
-Stage 1 Boss: Tie between Letty's and Yamame's themes. Seems like all S1B themes fall around the average mark (or lower), and these two are close enough to consider equal.
-Stage 2: SA. The beat is catchy as hell, and matches the cave-atmosphere of Stage 2 to boot.
-Stage 2 Boss: UFO. Okay, I lied. I don't have UFO, but I've heard Kogasa's theme, and it's amazing. HM to Parsee's theme.
-Stage 3: MoF. Such a beautiful piece, no wonder we see it ranked so highly among fan polls.
-Stage 3 Boss: EoSD. Despite the game's bad instrumentation, it doesn't appear as much of a curse here, letting me get through to the nifty melody.
-Stage 4: SA. Another beautiful piece, and it progresses quite nicely throughout the stage, adding to its awesomeness.
-Stage 4 Boss: SA. The melody, the presentation, so good... *falls over*
-Stage 5: SA. I know it contrasts with the style of other Stage 5 themes, but that's partly what makes it good (obviously has a touching melody to back it up). Even more evidence of how atmospheric this game's music is, especially considering its near flawless progression across the level.
-Stage 5 Boss: IN. S5B themes don't tend to be excellent either, huh? Reisen's theme is pretty cool for what it's worth, though.
-Stage 6: SA. The only memorable S6 theme, if you ask me. All the others are too short (probably because ZUN knew he'd be composing them for short stages) and thus don't have much to give.
-Stage 6 Boss: SA. As if there was any competition for this spot. A song that practically screams "final boss" in its deliverance, and totally appropriate for Touhou's first true villain.
-Extra Stage: MoF. Yet another beautiful melody, with a Japanese flair to it. HM to Last Remote, which comes really close here.
-Extra Stage Boss: PCB (Extra). Necro-fantasy's main melody (you know, the trumpet) is GODLY. You may not like how high it goes (as ZUN's trumpets tend to do), but for some reason I think the high pitch suits a theme for a fox quite well. Oh, and HM to Koishi's theme for it's "disturbing" tone (matches the nature of Koishi's ability).

See? SA is too good. :V

Don't lie to yourself; Touhouvania's music isn't nearly as good as Touhou and ESPECIALLY not as good as Castlevania music.

SA definitely is my favourite (of the Windows games; I'm not familiar with any of the PC98 stuff). I love it from beginning to end (well, except maybe Stage+Boss 3 and the ending and credits music), and overall it probably has the most fitting music. Stage 2, Parsee's theme, Stage 5, and Koishi's theme are probably my favourite ones. Satori's theme gives me shivers every time I listen to it.

MoF follows very closely, and PCB closely after that. Really depends on my mood though; MoF has much more energetic and lively music, while PCB's is overall more calm and beautiful. The next one, IN, is way down there.

Overall: SA > MoF > PCB >> IN > UFO > EoSD

Out of 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, I made a list for each stage/boss number; here are the top two for each. A lot of these are really close.

Title: PCB by far. (Second: SA)
Stage 1: PCB. (Close second: SA)
Boss 1: This one was really hard to decide on, since none of them really stand out from the rest. I'm going to make it a three-way tie between EoSD, IN, and MoF.
Stage 2: SA. (Second: PCB)
Boss 2: SA. (Second: PCB)
Stage 3: PCB. (Second: MoF)
Boss 3: PCB. (Second: MoF)
Stage 4: MoF. (Second: SA)
Boss 4: IN Reimu. (Second: SA)
Stage 5: SA. (Second: MoF)
Boss 5: MoF. (Second: SA)
Stage 6: MoF. (Second: IN)
Boss 6: MoF. (Second: IN Eirin)
Ex Stage: IN. (Second: SA)
Ex Boss: SA. (Second: a tie between IN and MoF)
Ending: MoF. (Second: PCB)
Credits: MoF is very nice. (Second: SA)

Funny how SA gets top in few of these, but it's still my overall favourite.

PoFV overall isn't that great, but Tewi, Aya, Sakuya, Komachi, and Shikieiki's themes are quite nice. (Listed in increasing order of niceness.)

Overall I don't really like StB's music, but there are a couple of nice ones. StB's title music is pretty good, as well as Wind God Girl. DS is better overall; I like all of the photo themes roughly equally (except the last one). The title music doesn't do it for me though.
