Title: What would you lose if the internet as it is today were to completely die?
Post by: PC on December 30, 2010, 10:56:13 PM
For those of you complaining that the topic question is flawed/confusing/unrealistic, let us assume that you (and only you) have lost all ability and privilege to access the Internet in any way, meaning no IRC, no netplay, no downloading, no email, no forums, no anything. Permanently.

Now, you can still use your computer as a tool for school/work if you wish, and provided that they're acquired IRL through CD/whatever, run as much software/game as your little heart desires.

For some people, this would probably be life-shattering and break their souls completely.
Others would probably just shrug and move on.

What about you? What do you stand to lose (or gain, I dunno) if this were to happen?

I would lose contact with several friends of mine, access to communities I like, much of my reading matter, and the ability to look up things I want to know about. So yeah, it would suck.

80% of my friends and daily activities.

Probably one of the worst things that could ever happen.

Pretty much everything. I do research and school through online, I order pretty much everything besides groceries online, most of the games I buy are through digital retribution.

It would be really hard to buy stuff or have reliable news spread around.

Mostly a social outlet. I'm sure I could survive without it, but it would be a great loss, as I really enjoy communication.

And yeah, music and games too.

I lose nothing because I have no friends anyway. Maybe I'd become a functioning member of society, god forbid.

It would probably kill me to be perfectly honest. Nearly all of the people I truly consider friends are online, most certainly my best friends are...  I wouldn't be able to game with any of the people here either, and for video games, I wouldn't be able to look up FAQs when I get stuck, or when I'm just curious about something in a game.

So yeah, it would suck VERY horribly overall for me. I mean, I'd still be able to play video games like I used to before I actually came on the internet, but... Really, the internet is where 90% of my time is spent, and 99% of where I actually talk to people. Losing it completely would be truly terrible.

Means to communicate with IRL friends, information that helps me in the real world, most of my study material, and of course a great deal of my entertainment - including music, games, anime, movies, and stories.

Then again, I spent most of my life without it so it's not like I wouldn't know what to do. It would just be difficult to downshift to a lower speed of information travel.

So much for all of my new entertainment and social life. Two days after losing it I'd start wondering if I should club a female to bring back to my cave, though I'm sure she wouldn't be impressed with my flimsy saber-tooth tiger pelt throw rug.

There are some people who mean more than anything else to me that I talk to on the internet and it would pain me greatly to lose them.  I don't really care about the music and games and whatnot, but losing the connection to these people would absolutely devastate me, plain and simple.

My absolute best friends are on the internet, so of course that would be pretty crippling, but luckily I did exchange cell phone numbers with most of the ones that at least live in the USA...and I've given my address to those that don't.

So that no matter what happens to the internet, losing that connection doesn't mean losing OUR connection.

I'd be affected in various ways. I can live without the music, although I'd be really saddened by it, and I'd have a lot of difficulty focusing, as music helps me focus at times.

I'd be in rough shape without MotK or other sites I like, to pass the time and enjoy myself.

But I would be as good as dead if I lost contact with some people, who as is I can only chat online with, either due to not know phone numbers, or them living in a whole other country. A few people on this site make up a large chunk of my will to live, so without them, I'd give in to my troubles and issues, and death would claim me.

Know this MotK, I owe you, the entire site my life, you guys, all of you, to some degree, have given me the will, the drive, to keep going. Thanks for existing MotK, thanks for joining everyone :D

I would lose access to my two major sources of job opportunities, as well as information regarding anime conventions.

Amusingly, I actually don't need the internet for friends or games (as useful as it is), because I actually buy my Toohoos and I have off-internet contact info for about 95% of the people with which I'd want to maintain contact.

zing!

It would free up a tremendous amount of time in my life that, like before I came online, I would have no idea how to fill.  I already devote too much of my time to intricate side projects that won't amount to anything; they would just shift to offline equivalents.

...This actually seems pretty spot on for what I'd have to say regarding the topic, I can't imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't grown up next to a computer screen.  :ohdear:

Contact with several friends, sources for imformation regarding things I'm working on and basically the only place where I feel I can hang out and have fun.

Everything else, like written works, art, and other documents I create on the computer, I keep on my HD or Backup on Jumpdrives/CDs so, I won't lose anything I spent weeks and shit working on...just social links(lol) and a place to hang out.

Everything, pretty much.

I know I'm speaking for people other than myself when I say that the internet is my only source of:
1. Informative and educational resources that aren't tainted by poorly hidden attempts at watering down my capacity to think freely
2. Social networking that happens naturally and allows me to connect personally with other people as opposed to being forced down my throat by misguided psychologists that 'just want me to be normal'.
3. True, untethered freedom of speech, opinion and expression without the worries of getting fucked over by the society inflicted zealots that happen to have authority over me in the real world.
4. The ability to find new sources of entertainment that stimulate me as opposed to eating the shit that the TV is blurting out.

If the internet died, graphic design is going to be a VERY difficult thing to do. No sources, no stock, less clients. Meh.

But I think I'll get a lot of side projects done, have a lot more books to read and more movies to watch. Hell, I'll probably even go out and drink more.

my virginity

Also I guess my livelihood wouldn't be crushed, but work would become significantly more annoying, given that all legal research is pretty much conducted through Westlaw or LexisNexis, without which I would actually have to go into libraries and look up cases blind in the physical reporters.

On the other hand--assuming the Internet were to die for everyone--no Blackberry, and no being woken up at 3 a.m. by a brief arriving from halfway around the world, that needs to be acted upon RIGHTNOW.

Call it even, I guess.

I imagine as a whole the hotel I work in will now go back 20 years in time.
or 200 years.
depending on how well that is managed I am happy with it, after all, I am trained in outdated methods of report handling, room assignment, and key storage back in the days.
Then times, people used to actually have KEYS, which is pretty cool, and reports were not completely reliant of screen press a buttons and you'd had to fill them up yourself by ticking off boxes.

overall, I'd say it was undesirable in terms of work, but manageable.
I imagine however, my entertainment would have been a lot more about buying INTO pan-asian piracy. Oh hey, welcome to the country where the real thing is as unrecognizable as the fake.

For myself I honestly have no idea what I would do. I would lose my primary source of entertainment and it would really hurt any chance of me continuing my education and any chance of employment, at least for the forseeable future.

Now if everyone were to lose the Internet then things could become pretty bad for everyone regardless of whether they use the Internet much themselves. With so much dependent on the Internet either directly or indirectly I'd think the immediate economic impact would be quite severe.

It would be a major problem for me as i use the internet for communication with people across the border - a necessity for me since its near impossible to find people who shares interests with me around where i live.

In addition, gathering information but with regards to something you need in a given situation or for education would also become a whole lot harder. So.... i hope that never happens.

My sanity; also Drake, I love you.

I need to be constantly doing something. While I was away, I didn't have access to Internet, and I was bored =/
The Internet itself isn't too much of a problem for me, but it makes obtaining info and communicating with others exponentially more difficult.

Life would suck more without access to the network, I'm afraid.

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

Lacking the internet would make my communications far slower, and it would take away half the fun of fiction writing: showing people everywhere how I write. This would make me very sad. :(

Probably, I lost a way of connection with others and maybe I can't communicate with some of them by other ways.
Then the hell problem is that I can't receive the resources anymore and I can't get some information as well.
The even worse matter is about my website, I can't leave my members because of this.
