Title: [Art] Yui Takenaka's Works
Post by: Primula on September 07, 2010, 01:39:32 AM
Hello guys, I decided to post some of my pictures here since I'm improving from my last posts from some other threads here.

My DA here : http://vappie-steamtail.deviantart.com/
My pixiv here: http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=1413756

Here are some of my pictures that I did:
(http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/5269/singyoku.th.png) (http://img80.imageshack.us/i/singyoku.png/)(http://a.yfrog.com/img203/8224/6qq.th.png) (http://yfrog.com/5n6qqp)(http://a.yfrog.com/img830/2722/z2v.th.jpg) (http://yfrog.com/n2z2vj)(http://a.yfrog.com/img718/224/k9l.th.png) (http://yfrog.com/jyk9lp)

And pictures that I drew in pencil that will be edited on GIMP.
(http://a.yfrog.com/img14/657/2c.th.jpg) (http://yfrog.com/0e2cj)(http://a.yfrog.com/img716/417/qmx.th.jpg) (http://yfrog.com/jwqmxj)

Yes, I am that same Shingyoku nut, but a bit more shy and careful. Comments will be appreciated. :>

@flamezero Thanks!

Ah, sorry about not posting something in a while, I got a request from a DA person to draw someone. Hopefully I get it finished by Sunday but I have a test tomorrow, an assignment which is due next Wednesday and a project due on the 14th.

(http://a.yfrog.com/img825/6982/idu.th.png) (http://yfrog.com/mxidup)

So yeah... I'll be coloring the second Cirno panel(the one that says 'Wow!') soon if I have time.

I can't tell the second frame properly... is that a reference to that 'LOL I'M CIRNO I'M PRO AND I CAN CALCULATE PI AND STUFF' picture floating around?

Yes, it is. And I tried doing it by memory but I failed badly.

Good news, my big brother managed to scan my pictures(well, one to be exact because I wanted to scan my Reisen picture and I scanned the rest of my pictures afterwards), and I don't even have to go through the trouble to modify my drawings!

Her eyes/nose look a little bit too high...

Other than that, it's fine; but when I looked at the preview I thought she just had a □_□ face :V

Thank you for the comment. :P

If you were wondering why I'm not posting anything recently, it's just that I've been fooling around with LMMS Studio and procrastinating. Something tells me I'll eventually get a cold in the next few days..

Thank you~ Ah, no wonder Rumia seems to look odd. o-o

Also drew Patchy because it's Purple Day. Sorry if it looks funny but I wanted to draw her carrying a book but I didn't have much time since it's like bedtime right now.

Koakuma will be delayed because I wanted to draw something for Halloween.

And an OC drawing.... I need to make him to look a bit younger, but I liked how the hair turned out.

Scanned a Kaguya.

And Hatate. But the eyes seems to be a little off. :O

Ermm.... Hopefully I can finish my Halloween picture because I have to do an annotation assignment. (I don't think I'm doing really well in that assignment.)

Looked at those last two. I feel you've improved somewhat, which is great :) The eyes seem somewhat better-placed, and the art feels a little cleaner. The bangs on both of those look great, and Hatate's camera ain't too shabby either!
Some contructive criticism:
I think it would be an improvement to enlarge the torso, about twice it was before. Its unusually small for manga, as where its at least slightly wider than the head or more,  from those works of the amazing vector artists I happened to have discovered. But that torso width is A-ok for chibi, if you ever plan to draw that, you can even make it half that size XD

I hope this helps :)

Hello guys, I'm done annotating the book so I have more drawing time.  :V

Here's a STG Frame for Danmakufu I whipped up for the fun of it.  :3   (EDIT: Whoops! Edited the black into another dark color so no crazy transparency will be going on!)
(http://a.yfrog.com/img691/3144/nd.png) (http://yfrog.com/j7ndp)

If you guys were wondering why I'm not getting Kurumi done, I'm working on coloring (and doing some modifications ) on Coin Spire's submission for the Atelier Album Project.
Yes, I know my coloring isn't that good.
Progress so far:

Another STG_Frame. :V

Okay.. I colored the yin-yang ball and I am making some progress on shading Reimu. I hope I get her done by the end of this week.

Some sketches I finished today.  :derp:

(http://a.yfrog.com/img258/1482/r9m.th.png) (http://yfrog.com/76r9mp)
Will be going over this in GIMP and submit this to the Atelier Album Project Submissions thread.

(http://a.yfrog.com/img442/9223/m0q.th.png) (http://yfrog.com/cam0qp)
ShingyOkuu. Yeah, I'm that lame but I will enter this for a contest in DA. ::)

(http://a.yfrog.com/img109/9135/yjc.th.png) (http://yfrog.com/31yjcp)
Like the Hatate picture, I will go over it in GIMP and post it in the Atelier Album Project Submissions thread.

I will be doing more pictures for the submissions if I have time..  :/

Uhm.. I think I'm done coloring the Reimu picture. So here you go:

Geez, why haven't I posted here yet? I feel like I'm missing out on some good stuff.

Anyways, I like what you've done with the Reimu picture, but have you considered putting highlights in her hair, maybe second level shading as well?
I feel as if the hair looks...one-tone-sh when you look at it from a distance.

Yeah but I kinda got lost on how to do it since I haven't done that on my other pictures. Maybe I should do that when I get home from school and post it in the submissions thread.

She was too cute. :derp:

The eyes were done with cel-shade so I still need to work on that since I think doing it with all that smudging and stuff will not fit in to cel shaded hair and clothes. Technically this was done in two days so the anatomy is a bit messy.

The 'alternate costume' design for ShingyokuM was based on the way a friend drew the hat and someone else's drawing of him.

I know, I still need to work on men.  :qq:

Nice! I think you've improved a lot! I suggest making shingyoku's female form a bit more feminine, perhaps wider hips and noticeable bust would do nicely. And I think you do men just fine. A little expansion on the torso would be enough to complete the male shingyoku's manliness. That koakuma drawing was great :3

Okay, finished some submissions for the album project thread. The Hatate drawing kinda bugged me because I'm not that good at drawing objects (and the fact that I have never had a cell phone before, what an out of date person I am) and I spent like an hour trying to create a fitting background. D=

No offence, but Daiyousei sorta looks like an upside-down mushroom :V

Maybe add more... texture? I think the only thing wrong with it is its monotone colouring, and your colouring skills are pretty awesome.

Is it in vector?

Anyways those backgrounds @_@

(BTW, your second YT account link is broken)

Hmmmm, yeah, more textures would work. I'll practice on that. (Thanks.)

EDIT: Derp, I lied. I got vector a bit confused.

( Oh, thank you for pointing that out. It should be working now. :X )

Ah, I doubt I can start and finish my sketches, and I'm not that skilled in Corel Painter since I use GIMP like all the time. :derp:

ShingyOkuu Reiuzi. Yes, it was needed to be done. - -/

Took technically 5 days to complete it though. I was too lazy on doing the lineart during the Winter break but since the deadline for a contest is near, I started to work on this entry again. Though I want to do Kurumi, I had to do another request for my big sis.

And here's some other junk. :3
(http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/2020/projector.th.jpg) (http://img815.imageshack.us/i/projector.jpg/)
Drew this the week before Winter vacation during 'speech' class.

(http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/6084/yuka.th.jpg) (http://img535.imageshack.us/i/yuka.jpg/)
Finished the sketch during the three day weekend. I know, I need to make her legs longer. :derp:

(http://img602.imageshack.us/img602/8979/dreambutterfly.th.jpg) (http://img602.imageshack.us/i/dreambutterfly.jpg/)
And I also finished this sketch the same day I did Yuka. This is supposed to be CtC Reimu doing that butterfly spellcard.

Derp, forgot to scan another 'still life' sketch I drew, but I'll do that later.

Yuuuii~ welcome back~

About the ShingyOkuu. Maybe it's just me, but it looks like her torso + legs are facing one way, and the rest of her body is facing the other way.  :/
But I'm loving that Yuka.

Recently, I've been showing some interest in playing some CAVE shooters, and out of all of them, I want to play Ketsui. Even though they look hard, they look very fun to play. So I tried to draw A.I from Daifukkatsu from memory for the fun of it. :>

And maybe I shall draw Shooty next. :>

Originally, I was going to draw Ketsuireimu from Incredible Daily Tale (a Danmakufu script) but the proportions were way off so I drew a normal Reimu instead. The design is based of Nyagakiya's Reimu player sprite. :V

Try to do some practice by drawing from a picture or an anatomy book. Also, doing some practice on shading and texturing on the side would not hurt, too.

Also, it is certainly good to draw 'real' guys from time to time. It makes you realize the difference in facial features between male and female.

So I was experimenting with different styles of eyes and shading (sorta). (Thank you for the tip Red. I'll work on it. :) )  Here's a Hirano. (and Gyoku)

Because I volunteered for a project, I won't be posting digital art often so bear with me with my traditional drawings. :3

If there was an actual way of improving drawing skills fast, I would not be suffering. Seriously, only way is draw more and more. Sure, having good mentors or referential works can shorten the

wait, but it still boils down to constant commitment. I have been drawing for about 4 years now, and I think I am not making much of progress. So, take your time and sit back. After all, it's a hobby.

Don't rush, or you will lose motivation and drive, just like I am now.

..I see. I'll keep note of that.

Maho Takanashi from TWilight refrAIN. This is technically an old one since I did the face a few months before I added on to it.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25428208/Sketches/shizuka.png
Shizuka Tsugomori from the same game as above. Obviously the character I referenced my display name after. The things on the hair are tricky because I couldn't see them very well in the original artwork.

Wherever did you put?

What are you seeing?

I still need to get to Level 3-4 on the Segment 8 boss. That last Fatal Attraction keeps getting me lately. I must be losing my touch because I started off as getting to level 3-4 on practice and now I keep getting the 'Glitched Kareidoscope'. D:

Luize from Mystic Square.
Mistakes already known.

And a Shingyoku I did last Monday. About 95% of it was done in one period (45 minutes?).

About some of the old drawings I did before Reimu, I'll plan to use them to practice with different methods of coloring besides cel-shading.

And yeah, started to use dropbox since I feel a little unsure about yfrog.

UPDATE: Ack, I should've known better on knowing where to put the image files. Fixed.  :colonveeplusalpha:

I am feeling you are concentrating working on the lining work.

You are saying you have experimented with different style of eyes, but honestly, I am not really seeing the difference. Maybe, even my eyesights are failing (takes pills) but...

Anyhow, I am seeing a drawing from very Aozora-Market style artwork in your signature. If you like the style, sometimes shameless copying can make you feel the difference in usage of line

and improves your stability/consistence with lines. Give it a try, and you won't be disappointed.

About the experimenting, I was aiming to practice eyes that are more slanted/realistic rather than the eyes that I usually draw as an inspiration from riku(wana)'s artwork.

And the signature, Aozora did the artwork for 2(sort of) of the 3(or 4 since it's in progress) games by AQLoop which are TWilight INSanity and Alternative Sphere(again, sort of since Kana Toto did most of the artwork). So I got some inspiration from Aozora in my recent artworks due to the hair details.

I will keep note of that, Red. Thanks.

Ran (experimented again) : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25428208/Sketches/ran.png

So, guess what I read during the past few weeks?
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25428208/Sketches/Flan.png
.....Because everyone likes her right?  :3

^ I  didn't originally plan to color her after I did some shading, but I got bored and colored her dress and did the rest of the picture.

Another Shizuka drawing because I wanted to practice on drawing side views/profiles. Not as good as Shingyouku, but it's probably because the outfit created some difficulties.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25428208/Sketches/shizuka2.png

So, I have a little more freedom now to work on some Genyoubu (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8830.0.html) art and a request I recently got from a friend form another forum.

I have realized that shading with 0.5 lead is fun. o-o

And I learned how to use the levels tool. o-o

To Aru Majutsu no Index doodles (Might probably look weird because I drew characters by memory first at school before I used references when I got home):

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25428208/Sketches/Indexstuff.png

Smoothing test (Might do non-people related stuff every once in a while):
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25428208/Sketches/smoothing.png

I tried 1ccing Hellsinker with Minogame. I did pretty well in terms of gameplay and I had a top score for Spirits, Kills, and Tokens but.....
I got Level 2 on Segment 8.... D:

Oh well, must be Friday the 13th.  If time permits, I might sketch Accelerator.

Good to see you trying out other methods; an aspiring artist should have some guts to give a shot at everything.

However, there are few things I would like to suggest:

1. Get proportions right

I know it is a total pain in the ass to get it right, but you should always practice the proportion of  figures. So, please do not restrict yourself to a face; draw at least a half of a body.

2. About shading

You said shading with 0.5mm lead is fun. Congratulation, you just confessed you are a glutton for punishment. Especially when you are aiming for smooth texture, a mechanical pencil is NOT your friend.

In addition, the smoothing generally decrease the contrast of each shade and consequently, can ruin a good piece. So, I would hold myself back a bit with smoothing.

(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/Burning_Mutt/th_1297038753878.jpg) (http://s1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/Burning_Mutt/?action=view&current=1297038753878.jpg)

This was done fully with 0.5mm lead pencils - one with HB and other with 2B. For each part, I gave coat shading of  2B and smoothed the area with Q-Tips. Then I started to give contrasts and then smoothed

the area again with Q-Tips again. Rinse and repeat for about 3 times and you should have somewhat dark tone. This is where a HB comes in; this sucker requires a lot of pressure to get smudged. So restore

the desired contrast with a HB lead. Then grab an eraser to give highlights to finish it off. As you can see this is freaking painful and you should think about getting 4B or 6B pencil for shading. If you

don't lose your appetite for drawing after drawing a full figure along with background, damn it sir, you have great perseverance.

Hope this ranting helped and keep those hands busy.
