Title: [Music+Art] Awesome Atelier Album Project DISCUSSION THREAD
Post by: Infy♫ on August 30, 2010, 08:15:39 PM
Greetings, Sercan here.

Me and some others in Alice's Art Atelier had the idea of making a collaboration CD and selling it at Comiket for charity.
Since there are currently only 3 musicians in this project, we need some help.

please note that it's not neccesary to make NEW stuff for this project. You may also submit your older works if you think they are decent enough.

What we need:
Musicians,
CD cover and booklet artists,
People willing to produce the CDs and Sell at a booth,
People to judge the content.

Anyone willing to help, post here, or drop by the IRC at
 #atelier-magna on irc.ppirc.net.
Any ideas on this subject are highly welcome!

You know, I wanna help too. I'm only good at drawing, though, and I know a lot about designing .If I can help with anything, just let me know.
Also, I was thinking... If we are going to make remixes, it would be good to pick  one song from each game we choose and then we'd judge it alltogether.

Thats awesome Amiga. As far as the artists are concerned, we will need an album cover, and an art booklet. Would be a neat excuse for a contest. The winners piece can be the cover, and if ya lose, your art will still go in the booklet.

Also, I was thinking... If we are going to make remixes, it would be good to pick  one song from each game we choose and then we'd judge it alltogether.

That sounds interesting, but I dont quite understand. Can ya elaborate a bit?

I like that idea. Nice excuse for a contest.

I think it would be best if we didn't have multiple arranges for the same song in this album. One Septette for a Dead Princess, one Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye, etc. Maybe two if we can't choose one. Could be another contest idea.

One Septette for a Dead Princess, one Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye

You had to mention the two songs I love, right?

That sounds interesting, but I dont quite understand. Can ya elaborate a bit?

I meant, let's not put the whole EoSD soundtrack with PCB (or anything else, thos two are just examples) remixed together. Let's pick the ones we most like and then we remix them. And after that, as they are the ones that the majority wants, we'd be able to judge them better.
And another thing. We need a theme (source of inspiration, whatever) if we want to make this thing right (Like, I once saw a CD of remixes were the tittles of the song had a baseball theme...-Okay, I don't know how to explain things xD) Well, that's just my opinion...

Seems to me like the "theme" is the work of the Atelier people. I dunno, I don't think a theme is necessary.

Well, I dunno. It is just one of the first things I think when I'm going to do something. it was just an advice (should've clarified that, I know)

Edit: I had the best idea I've had in weeks, and when you hear it, you'll know how pathetic I am xD: There is a thread called "touhou musicians" and, well, almost everyone agreed with the instruments, so, I was thinking if we can get guided by it, or I dunno...

I'd be glad to help, but at best, I can remix themes with MIDI-based sounds, and the best MIDI-based sounds I have are the default MIDI-based sounds that Windows Vista comes with. And even then, I'd much rather have sheet music on the piece before I even try at it.

If I had a good recording device, I'd record a piano or acoustic guitar piece. Sadly, the best I have is a camera, which lacks in the audio department, but is beautiful for video.

Unless there's some sort of visual art I could do for the CD, I can't say I can get any high-quality involvement. Sorry. :<

Mostly in the same shoes as Patorikku for the MIDI, and I haven't started remixing long Touhou melodies yet?

? but like I had expressed before, I'd be oh-so-veeeerry glad to participate!! For Music, that is >////////////////////<

Besides the remixes we musicians we'll do individually, I've thought for some time about making one remix we musicians could collab on to? It's a little more involved, but I think it'd be fun, too >w<

i'd like to notify that for those who have no time to make new stuff for this project they can always put their existing songs on it!
and of course, if you got good recording equipment, you can make acoustic arranges too.

Never enough artists~

Well said!  To be honest, I think that anyone who wants in on this should be allowed in.  The only upper limit to artists/musicians should be the amount of people who want to actually take part.  Of course, that's only my view on the subject, but...

'Course, not saying I want in, ahah~  My stuff's not quite good enough to be included, but I'm sure there's plenty more people out there who'd want in.  Probably, anyways. >.>

Musicians of the Kaleidoscope.

Also, if you seriously lack musicians, I can try to mix together some MIDI-based songs, mixing together Final Fantasy with Touhou. Any objections or recommendations, because I have no originality of my own whatsoever want to make this a sort of "What the people want" mix.

Seems like voting for a lot of things at once in a forum format would kinda be chaotic, but I may just bein goofy =p So whatever y'all wanna do.

As far as a deadline, Sercy and Gappy would like to see it sold at a Comiket, so I suppose the next time one of those rolls around is the deadline. Assuming we can find someone to set up a booth xD Im not to keen on the details of Comiket, (I originally just wanted to jam with Sercy a bit XD) but  if were gonna go through the effort of doin it anyway, why not get some people to listen to it.

would be easier to figure out a theme if it was a specific genre being arranged. for various artists one would have to make a cover with everything on it

Well I sure could try to submit something here. I could try arranging something out of The Refrain of the Lovely Great War, Nemesis' Stronghold and/or The Centennial Festival for Magic Girls.

I guess I could start with Nemesis' Stronghold at first. I'm somewhat busy with school due to some major exams coming but if the time limit is as lenient as December I'll surely have something done by then. It's just the quality I can't reassure, due to my unfortunate inexperience.

LIke that name. It's just what we are xD (I mean, what other name could describe us better than that?)

*Sigh*...I've already started and I think I'll commit suicide. I put some touhou characters together with many instruments from different genres. I think it's shit, but I still have time to make it better....I think...

Yeah, that's good.

I tried rerecording my U.N. Owen arrange, since I've added stuff to it since my last recording, but I gave up after a couple of minutes because the recording quality was not album-worthy.

Maybe I'll try again later, but I probably just need to get some new recording equipment, which likely won't happen anytime soon because I have no money...

Doodles of the people? I think it's best if we stick to Touhou characters, it's not like the Japanese we hope will be buying it will get our personal OCs.

Also yeah, AAA is the perfect name suck it, library.

And this is really in the need of some organisation. I mean, it's a big project.
We need to organize the art contest part, start a thread, select a judge, post submissions to said thread preferably, or otherwise PM to the selected judge, and final results made public in that thread.
We should also start another thread so the musicians have room to discuss and prepare the music without the artists debate in the middle.
I guess the art debate could remain in the contest thread, but if necessary an art debate thread could also be started.

With that we can leave this thread to discuss the rest that is relevant to the circle, such as how we're gonna set up a booth in Japan to sell this, how are we gonna get it produced, costs, etc.

I also agree with the name~

Perhaps instead of a thread to post the content, a group file dump account? We can use 4shared or some such. Picking judges would be good for an organizational sake, but I also like the idea of everyone getting a say. If we do decide to pick judges however, make sure we have one from each side as an artist and a musician.

As far as the art contest, I was kinda just thinkin we do a regular old vote =p But maybe thats too simple. Also for the most part, the musicians have been using the IRC channel #Atelier-Magna, but if we need it we can make the threads.

Now for the actual event itself, your ideas are as good as mine amigos. But id be willing to donate some cash if we can get it arranged on that side.

Well I sure could try to submit something here

Good to hear~

Okay Haku~ After deliberating about it, we've decided to have SquidTentacle be the project manager, so questions regarding organization can be directed to him. As for the judgin We have 3 judges on the musician side, and 1 judge on the artist side so far. But you have been requested Haku~ so if ya wanna do it, we will need 1 more artist judge. If not then 2. The only qualification is that ya think ya know somethin about art =p, and you can use IRC.

All pieces will be judged by all 6 judges to make sure its pretty even. Any objections?

Now now, judging one's own work is an important part of being an artist/musician altogether.

Also, I would gladly volunteer to be an art judge, if you still require one. Just tell me when you want me to appear in court IRC, and I'll be there.

Well, uh, I do know how to play the guitar and piano.

My digital piano has a few sound effects that actually sounds nice, I have an Akai drum machine/sampler, and I have various Asian-y (heh) instruments around the house so I could help.

I just need to think of some music and practice... (and get a decent camara/recorder)  :ohdear: But when are you expecting these?

Yeah, but Comiket would be immensely better.
Also after/if we do work it out, we should think of a way to spread the word about the disc and circle. That's only later, though.

If I get to have a position or something on the project, can I be QA for the music part or something?
Erm, unlike the judge, QA checks trial- or end-product stuff like the remix/music's volume (if there are "clipped" parts of the music due to high volume), the cleanliness of the music (no snapping or unnecessary noise along the music), or non-awkwardness of the fadeout / loop of the music. QA disregards the melody, instruments used and other musical aspects in quality checking.
Just an idea.

Of course, before I do that, I oughtta give advice how to achieve these quality sounds I'm mentioning? I've only got the most basic usual faults in recording and editing to look out for >.<;;, but I think it'd help polish end-product music to be as clean as those released in Touhou albums, or even any nice song/music officially released.

i'd like to notify that for those who have no time to make new stuff for this project they can always put their existing songs on it!
and of course, if you got good recording equipment, you can make acoustic arranges too.
Ooh, I'll try completing my set of Touhou fanfares and put'em here then xD

...eh, no use just saying it here, I gotta:
FIRE IT UP, I SAY!!

LET OUR PASSIONS RUN WILD!!
XD

Also for the most part, the musicians have been using the IRC channel #Atelier-Magna, but if we need it we can make the threads.
Will definitely help, especially people with indefinite online access schedule who couldn't see you in #Atelier-Magna everytime he signs in :<

Hey, I had an idea for the name of the album.
How about "Music compilation of the ones who spirited away" Or something like that xD ...God, my ideas are useless...
0A0
That... sounds like we're dead but still going or something.
No ill intentions >.<

Just noting, since I didn't see this mentioned anywhere here: As should be common knowledge, you can't just walk into Comiket and set up a booth. You have to apply, and there's deadlines for that. If you wanna get there, you'd better look into the formalities soon so as to not miss aynthing crucial.

That said, good luck with that project  :)

EDIT: Actually, Drake made a post before implying this very point, but it seems it was ignored.

EDIT 2: In fact, it might be most reasonable if you would, for example, ask N-Forza nicely whether he can sell the album at his circle's booth or something instead of planning to get an own booth. Just throwing that in as a thought  ;)

so who do i pm/what email do i send my songs to?

There should be a thread on the front page for submissions.

That one cannot walk into Comiket thing =p? Well at any rate, as ive mentioned, im simply not going to be of much use when it comes to this XD From what I understand, N-Forza is quite busy with his own stuff, but I just sent a PM so lets see what he says.

I'm not the one who handles what my circle sells. That's Talka's gig. I wouldn't mind doing it, so long as the quality is sufficient, but how were you planning on covering the cost of printing the CDs?

I can discuss it with Talka, and maybe we can come to some agreement. We weren't planning on selling New Hori-ZUN 3 anyway, so this could possibly take its place.

Oh, so this would be like the Anthology projects by Machikado-Mapoze?  :]

I could definitely drag my brother to provide a long, epic solo piano song (he's a classical pianist after all) but we are still waiting for the Parsee Anthology books since March... So, yeah, poke Talka about that first? Maybe? :V (I've mailed several times but no replies so far. I don't know what to tell him, he was really looking forward to hear how his song ended, it's a brutal 10 mins Parsee piano arrange... after making such a thing and we don't even know how the freaking book looks! I couldn't find a single picture around except for the front cover)

...

My bad, that rant should've been in another thread!

Anyway, when I read "Atelier" I thought it was about an Atelier Iris arrange album...

Wonderful. Well we can see about just setting up a donation. I'll put up 20 bucks or so, and more as I get subsequent paychecks.

I love this post.

Anyway, a donation pool is a great idea, though I wouldn't be able to donate anything at least for this month.
We need money not only for the CD printing, but also perhaps to cover part of the cost of recording equipment for some of the musicians. And by that I mean a cheap microphone or something.
I think quality is an important aspect, especially considering we're starting a new circle, full of unexperienced people.
Title: Re: [Music+Art] Awesome Atelier Album Project

Quality.

I dunno. I just used a cheap Logitech chat mic and Audacity to test something in 5 min and the quality was pretty descent.  :/

Donations are a smart idea... But I can't donate yet  :ohdear: Perhaps we can advertise this around MoTK?

Also, I would donate, but...I don't have money to do so.

I... could try music composition if it's okay.  I've done ambient and classical before, though my classical may not very appropriate for this project.  Is something more contemporary but less accessible permitted? e.g in this style (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJe7Vuc-oQA)

And would there be a split; like an electronics disc and a classical/acoustic disc in the album?

Eh... Autumn o.O? Well at any rate, couldn't hurt to try~ That actually sounds like a great idea as far as splittin the CD up. Depends on how many songs we get before the end though I guess. From what I can see im the only one who has any instrumental songs up xD Oh and squidy added one.

As far as I'm aware, you can use any style you want. I don't think we're constraining this album to songs in a specific style. In any case, we could use some more instrumentals. Flame and I are lonely. :V

thats not autumn. they just use similar avatar.

speaking of splitting the CD up, that was my original idea. Did you ever listen WAVE's ARCHIV-EAST CD? one of the CDs contains piano arranges, jazzy and choral songs and some others. the second contains orchestral arranges, the third is made pure of techno arranges in which two songs are mixed together.

we could do it in such a way too. depending on the content.

I've had some sort of idea for the cd cover image... Unfortunately I'm just average at drawing.

Here's how I wanted it to look, more or less:
(http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/6412/concept.th.png) (http://img835.imageshack.us/i/concept.png/)

I...have no idea when it comes to coloring, at all.

Here's the two layers of images that I used, it it could help:
(http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/5616/37232648.th.png) (http://img810.imageshack.us/i/37232648.png/)It's slightly off-center, yes.
(http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/8030/reimu.th.png) (http://img684.imageshack.us/i/reimu.png/)

Both images done by me, though the background was done using pre-existing images that aren't done by me.
I just want to hear some opinions about it before I delve into the dark arts of coloring...

Hi guys, Flame's told me about the donation drive. This came as a surprise to me as I never heard that this project will be requiring any external funding (next time, please let me know these things beforehand, thanks.) Before you start waving collection tins in front of everyone, there are a few formalities you need to get out of the way, as I told Flame in a PM earlier.

Firstly, can someone please write up a summary post containing the following:
a) Who is doing what.
b) What has been completed so far.
c) What still needs to be done.
d) Schedule, schedule, schedules. What is your deadline? What do you plan to do up till then? Is it feasible and realistic to achieve this schedule?
e) Cost/Expenditure outline. What exactly will the 500 USD fund?
d) What you hope to achieve with this project? What are the expected benefits/returns? Are they realistic?
e) This charity - where is it going to? Who are you donating to when you're done?
f) Past experience of similar projects. (Optional)
g) Vouching/opinion from people who have done similar projects before. (Optional)

N.B. And most, most, most importantly....who is responsible? Who will the donators go to if they want to see where their money's going? Who will I have to contact to make sure everything's going well? Who will be held accountable if the project does not, Suwako forbid, come to fruition?

Any donation drive must have all these to inspire confidence in prospective donators.

My apologies for being really fussy about this but 500 USD is a lot of money to expect people to donate towards, so it has to be done properly. I hope you understand. The above is just a worst case scenario which I'm sure won't happen.

Other than that, I hope to see this succeed. Good luck. Thanks!

A) Currently, I'm the one in charge of managing the project and ensuring that the process goes smoothly. N-Forza is the one who will actually be making and distributing the copies of the album. Flamezero16, HakureiSM, Sercan, and Autumn are involved in counseling and planning.

B) At the moment, we're just submitting music and art entries to be judged on Dec. 1st. The voting will decide which songs are on the album and which piece of art goes on the album cover. The remaining art will go in a booklet in the CD case.

C) After everything is judged, we need to send the completed material to N-Forza for production.

D) Deadline for submissions is Dec. 1st, which will allow N-Forza enough time between then and Winter Comiket to produce the albums. As stated, until then, we're just submitting material and planning what will be done with the profits.

E) The $500 will be used to make the CDs and give each one a decent case with a booklet containing all/most of the submitted art.

F) The aim is to demonstrate the skill of those in the Atelier to people outside MotK. Our hope is, of course, to get enough profit to make up the $500, and also to give publicity to our various artists.

G) Charity is currently undecided. I was under the impression that it would be you (Gappy) who would decide the charity.

As stated, people can go to me if they want to know what's happening with their money, how progress is going with the project, or most things related to the project in general. If the project does not succeed in one way or another (which I highly doubt, we have a lot of great potential here), I know I can be held accountable for such a thing.

That makes me wonder: Wouldn't it be more reasonable for that goal to promote the album within western communities and sell it on western conventions?
If you sell it at Comiket, sure, that is quite a success, but that's it. It's unlikely you'll get much feedback, especially in a language you can understand. And you won't reach people that could easily get in contact with the artists through MotK and support further work either (again, language barrier). I dunno if the publicity-effect will really be that great the way you plan things now.

we'll have to be selling really good in order to regain the cash required for this project... which means the stakes are even higher than before.
for some reason i think putting reimu on the cover would be very unoriginal. how many albums have i seen with that same shrine maiden on the cover?
i think putting a link to this site would help. totally. my idea to reach the goal was, to get this to the big boss of the forum.
as for Coin Spire's cover: i dont think its a good idea to use existing images. but damn that background looks professional. totally fitting for the back of the cover.

i forgot why i was originally posting here.
oh well, i'll say it when i remember

@Gap, we see your point, I'm having basically the same conversation with TSO right now.

@Squid, let's talk about that list and details on IRC, refine it, and provide the staff with a more resolute and formal one.

@Sakana, I can't really agree with you on that, because it supposes there's an unsurpassable barrier between western and eastern. Also the main goal is not make publicity to MotK, but to promote it's capacity to create art. I could elaborate but I'm too hungry to make any sense, but I hope you got the idea.

To be honest, I kind of pulled the $500 figure out of thin air. After getting some real info from Talka, it turns out it will be quite a bit higher.

For example, printing off 100 CDs in a slim case with just a slip for the cover will be 110,000 yen, or $1,315 at the current USD rate. Of course, the more you print, the better value (1000 CDs is 150,000 yen, or $1,793). For even a regular case and 4-page booklet we need to pay another 33,000 yen. So yeah, it's not going to be cheap, but economies of scale are at work here. The more money we can put up front, the more CDs we can print for a better value, and the lower we charge for it, the more likely people are to buy it.

Of course, you could go the economy route but that wouldn't be terribly impressive/eye-catching.

Then again, we're also going to get money back from selling it regardless; so if we did something like 'you get your money back after the albums are sold', i wouldn't seem like that big of a deal...?

A thousand bucks is quite a lot :V

Indeed, but we cant really guarantee that we would get enough to cover the donations, and that is alot. Were workin on ideas about where to go with this, but selling actual CD's seems like an unattainable goal at this point. But please wait warmly, and we'l let ya know what we figure out~

You guys are good~ Thats pretty much the plan thus far. We want to set up some songs for download as a demo, and perhaps see about having some flyers with the url handed out during comiket, if it can be arranged. This way we can still use a piece of art from the submissions on the flyer.

Also, I agree, it's a very appropriate title.

I kind of find the 百花西方 a bit ambient. :D
But what's with the 100 Western Flowers (百花西方)? And I don't get the number 3000, is that some kind of symbolism?
Or is it just my bad translation?

well...i had in my PC some songs...if you wanted them. Look them and if you like it...but well, im not a expert and nothing of all, only done this ones for fun. And are very old...

http://www.mediafire.com/?7392owwe9ui3hya ---Delirium Flower of Asia. Done with FL8; is a HUGE mix of sounds added with 4 pro (in that time...) even i not sure what Touhou songs is in it, but i hear Nostalgic Blood of the East ~ Old World (or is Kagome Kagome - Cinderella Cage?), a bit of Flowering Night ...i don?t know from what song extract the beat (Jean Michel Jarre midi? XD) sounds who i like (birds, voices, pieces of songs of diferent parts and reversing, a clock, etc) and the Touhou midis. Is mesmerising, psychodelic, crazy.I do that XD?
http://www.mediafire.com/?q2h24xrnansqa1z--- Sealed Power. is Forbidden Magic but very Jarre-ish. Is mixed with a piece of Rozen Maiden midi, who strangely fit too well in the song. The Bird...
http://www.mediafire.com/?oz6b57m6l6q34du --- Black Sun. Nuclear Fusion, but a strange version, more dark and slow. After seen a documental (in portuguese XD) about the radiactive incident in Gohania (Cesio poisoning) and was impressed....in the back, i heared the song Radioactivity from Kraftwerk, and wanted do a Gensokian vercion of "how imagined the devasted land if Utsuho done her crazy thing."
http://www.mediafire.com/?5kjfznmtmlz ---Fallen Violet, Sariel First theme "Now, Until the Moment You Die"...a fun thing is the strange end: is the original song, mixed and reversing and speeded and filtered to the point to sound like a chorus.
http://www.mediafire.com/?qyzdleyjurz ---Momoiro Ayakashi. Is the Last Spellcard song "Border of Life" a song dedicated...to the Saigyou Ayakashi tree.
http://www.mediafire.com/?2apokh8dnaqv9yl ---a remix of the "Kourindou song" Curious Shanghai Gu Pai, who is one of the two ZUN colaborations for the Majhong game. Exist few of this one, then i do this. And Because is Kourin! (i don?t know what title give it; Rainspell sounds good.)
http://www.mediafire.com/?onfootkzjk4n434 ---is a march mixed version of Mystic Oriental Dream ~ Ancient Temple. My imagination said who this is the Konpaku clan pre-battle song.
http://www.mediafire.com/?qxrtv9oxdruiu7r --- a experiment done today..."Mechanics of Love" Hartmann's Youkai Girl, done with a midi and all but...the sounds...all of them are extracted from the game itself. Sounds eerie XD

and if no want, don?t worry can download equally XD. are in 192 all of them.

no have good copies of mush of them because my PC exploded and lost the FL data of the old ones.

As for the printing and funding of this thing, it would probably be(a lot) cheaper if someone just bought a reliable CD burner and did this him/herself, if we're talking something like a hundred CDs. There are burners that can imprint images on the top of the Cd itself as well for some extra effect. The print booklet can likely be produced at a print shop or similar. If this is becoming very expensive, it likely better not to go to a professional firm. Maybe it won't be top of the line quality, but we may have a chance of getting a product to sell.
Title: Re: [Music+Art] Awesome Atelier Album Project DISCUSSION THREAD
Post by: HakureiSM on November 18, 2010, 03:57:05 AM
A domestic CD burner probably can't take doing 100 burns in a short period of time like that, though.
And by burners that print on the disk you mean Lightscribe. Lightscribe disks are more expensive than regular disks =/

Wasn't decided to try to distribute this via web? I haven't been on IRC for quite a while, so I don't know anymore :s

I'm working on a piece too, but I'm not sure I'll like it enough to make it a submission. Or finish it on time.
Title: Re: [Music+Art] Awesome Atelier Album Project DISCUSSION THREAD
Post by: Ragathol on November 18, 2010, 12:04:13 PM
Yes, we'd probably need an industrial strength burner, but it'd still be a lot cheaper. Lightscribe isn't necessary, just a neat effect. And they're likely cheaper in bulk.
But it's just a suggestion.

you know, besides just printing the cd, theres the booklet, and the image on the cd itself.

Ho boy, I've been away from this thread too long.

The current plan is to put the album up for download. We're not doing a whole album, though, just a sampler. Like one song and one picture from each artist, for example. I'm not sure if we're going to make people pay to download it or if we'll just have a donate button on the site, but one of those will happen and then by the time the next convention rolls around we'll try to produce actual CDs and booklets for distribution using the profits/donations from the sampler.

Anyway, I was also coming in here to apologize for being out of touch with the project for so long. College has been a deluge lately. Finals are in a couple of weeks, though, so I should be back by the submission deadline.

As much as I'd love to see a PV of my arrange, choosing any single track for a PV wouldn't be very representative for the album as a whole.
Guess the most fair option would be a slideshow kind of thing with all the submitted artwork and short, crossfaded samples of every song (with the latter being somewhat of a standard for doujin albums anyway).
Who said anything about your PV? Also even with all the different song styles created here, I don't see why a chosen song to represent the circle wouldn't work. And the main goal of a PV is not to *represent* an album, but to promote it (hence Promotional Video), as in, to make it known.

We're a bunch of members of a forum, trying to distribute the art we generate here. Just releasing the album without promoting it first will just let it fade away and our little circle attempt won't work. We have a lot of potential here, we should make use of it the best way we can.

Oh, and btw, a "slideshow kind of thing with all the submitted artwork and crossfaded samples" is a form of creating a PV.
Gotta show [AAA] to the world, baby.
Title: Re: [Music+Art] Awesome Atelier Album Project DISCUSSION THREAD
Post by: NamelessLegacy on November 25, 2010, 06:35:58 AM
Nobody said anything, right, that was kinda unnecessary. Sorry.

The thing is, we're still a group of artists pretty independent of one another, with everyone doing his own thing and, usually, this alone (with only Flamezero being somewhat an exception to this, recording guitar parts for tracks where it seems necessary or is requested on top of doing his own arranges). This does not quite fit the usual definition of a "circle", which implies closer collaboration between the members, or at least a stylistic resemblance.

I don't know if someone here is familiar with the OverClocked ReMix (http://ocremix.org/) community, but our album project does more resemble their albums (huge number of artists, everyone doing only a small number of tracks, mostly just one, great variety in styles) than a "traditional" Touhou doujin album. And they aren't calling themselves a circle, but a community, because that's what they are.

So much about the circle thing.

Choosing one single track for a PV won't work even in a promotional sense, because we're only attracting the audience fond of that particular style, and I wouldn't gamble on the chosen track being so good it can even attract people (keep in mind, we're talking about outsiders here, who are contemplating spending their money on this) not fond of listening to the style in the first place.
... Oh well, maybe I was just thinking more from the view of a listener, who would buy this album after seeing a PV of a certain track, only to be disappointed that the vast majority of the album sounds completely different than expected (and I've been there multiple times).
Still, of course we have a lot of potential here, but this will only promote a fraction of this.

Multiple PVs are better, of course, but we don't have the time for that, at least until this Comiket.

... But wait, this Comiket, we only plan to release a sampler anyway. So the slideshow thing does indeed seem the best solution, especially with the huge amount of art compared to the music.

So why are we even discussing animated Flash PVs then? Oh yeah, right, that's how the other circles do it.
Title: Re: [Music+Art] Awesome Atelier Album Project DISCUSSION THREAD
Post by: HakureiSM on November 25, 2010, 04:22:22 PM

The whole point of this project was to unite the artists here, who, unlike the folks over there in PSL, aren't close and organized at all.
So yeah, "a group of artists pretty independent of one another, with everyone doing his own thing" is pretty much the issue we're trying to fix here.
So your point is basically "we have a problem that's stopping us from fixing that very problem".

Any chance to extend the deadline? Seeing as many (or, I'm assuming many) people have in progress works created especially for this, and the date's pretty flexible anyways?

On that note, I'm about to start a piano arrange (cause a recorded piano piece would be the only decent thing I can create), but my camera quality sucks; anybody willing to play for it, if the time comes?

Exactly, I see no problem with a deadline extension. With the great number of individual submissions, the judges (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,7019.msg429235.html#msg429235) could start judging those right away. And since this probably won't be done in just a day or two, the deadline gets extended until the judging is finished, and the judges just pick up new tracks/artworks when they are submitted.

On that note, I'm about to start a piano arrange (cause a recorded piano piece would be the only decent thing I can create), but my camera quality sucks; anybody willing to play for it, if the time comes?
Does this mean we would get sheet music (although I'd much prefer a MIDI file)? Meh, I'm not that good in performing, but since I have a pretty good digital piano/keyboard here, I could try.
This is a unmastered sample of what it sounds like. (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13801415/nemesis_sample.mp3) (Yes, that is a one-shot recording of my playing after grinding the piece for quite some time. Normally, I'm playing far worse)

@NL Here's a sample of what I'm trying (and failing to) compose. Can you play it (somewhat well)?
*facepalm* I did want to include something along the lines of "but please no Septette" in my last post, but then I thought "well, what's the likelihood of him bringing up this particular song, just makes me seem unnecessarily picky".

1. Because Japan putting this theme above everything else (http://thwiki.info/th/vote7/result_music.html), doing yet another Septette arrange for any solo instrument is not a very unique idea, and it shouldn't be required for an album to make it popular. So much for the motivation.
2. 6 pages of sheet music is definitely too much for me. And I guess it's supposed to be played pretty fast? Even more time...
3. And since I despise this song and it's popularity, I certainly won't enjoy grinding this.

Sorry, I'm the wrong one for this.

Your camera quality is excellent, BTW.
That's because it's no camera, but the direct audio signal recorded via a cheap Line In cable. It does induce a tiny layer of noise though, but nothing too critical.
And yet another instance where expensive classical, non-digital pianos are made superfluous and bring nothing but additional hassle. May they rot in hell.

I guess we could push the deadline a bit, maybe to the 11th or 12th.
Yesterday.
Please stop confusing everyone and just either define a new date (and, very important, an exact time, complete with UTC time zone) and update it everywhere or just let the judges take over this project.
Also, if college was such a huge delay for you that you couldn't show up here (which I don't believe, since you were happily posting in other boards), why didn't you appoint a new project manager for the meantime (which, you know, should have been exactly your responsibility in this position)?
But instead, we now have this situation where nobody seems to know anything (what to do, when to finish and what exactly we are going to do after this, now that the Comiket booth plan did fail)...

Drake asked when the deadline was. Note how that was in the past tense. (Fucking ignore that, apparently I'm a dumbass.) The current deadline, since I didn't hear any objections, seems to be the 12th at midnight CST.

I apologize, college is a poor excuse for not coming over here. However, maybe it's just me, but there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of confusion. Once the deadline comes, the entries will be judged for which ones will be on the album, and as far as I know, we're doing one song/piece of art per person because this is a sample album. While that's going on, I will be setting up a website to host the album on for download and also for people to donate to so that we can try making an actual CD. Finally, as far as I know, we're going to try to print out fliers to be handed out at Comiket of this year to inform people of the album. There was also talk of making a PV to garner more interest, but we don't seem to have anyone who could do that.

Is that clear enough?

Pretty much, yeah.
NL, please calm the fuck down.

As for the judging, yeah I'll get to work on my opinion on people's works after my own is actually done.

Yup, that's much better :) So you're the one in charge of the download website.

There was also talk of making a PV to garner more interest, but we don't seem to have anyone who could do that.

(19:57:16) Squidtentacle: I'd say you can go ahead and post it, Nameless
(19:58:59) CAsercan3: but post it!
(19:59:11) CAsercan3: if a miracle happens, it might actually work
There's your permission to post this.

You know what. I just had a great idea for a PV trailer, and since I'm also having some HD video editing software here, I'm going to do this. It's not sure anyway if I'm going to submit something on the musical side, so this is the best thing I can do for this project at the moment.

Still, I need your support.

The first thing required for the concept is a list of around 5 or 6 songs sure to be included in the album. Short samples of those songs are going to be included in the video, and the visuals are designed around those songs. Like, if it's a Septette arrange, I'll show a (highly image-processed, of course) replay of a lunatic Remilia fight and add a fitting text on top. The submissions at this point cover a range wide enough for a trailer, so if the music judges would start right now, I can start with this.

Then, I'm going to need the artists.

For the background, I imagined any number of random locations of Gensokyo (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Category:Locations). Just draw whatever you like (although I'd like to see one of those bizarre psychedelic PC-98 backgrounds, especially from HRtP). Those don't have to be of particularly high detail level, since most of the screen is obscured with other stuff anyway, but make sure it's colored and in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Then, one drawing fitting each single song included in the video. This can be as simple as just a picture of the character of the theme playing, but I'll take anything at this point. This can be in any aspect ratio you like to draw it in (although portrait would be preferred). If it's in a non-rectangular shape, please take care that the background is clean enough (PNG alpha transparency would be even better).
Most of the artists do have pretty fitting stuff in their individual threads already. Just submit it when the time comes. It's not required to draw new stuff for this, but if you do, submit it in the album submission thread to include it in the judging.

Optionally, if one likes to draw fancy text, I may include this as well instead of some fonts. However, PNG format with alpha transparency will be recommended for this.
Also, since we want to reach Japanese people, someone to translate the little pieces of onscreen text from English into Japanese would also be helpful.

So, to sum up:
- Music judges need to give a list of like 5 or 6 tracks sure to be included in order for everything to start
- Artists draw submit a small number of random Gensokyo locations as backgrounds, not that high detail level, 16:9 aspect ratio
- Artists draw submit small image for every one of the tracks in the video
- (Optional) Someone draws fancy text, else I'm using stock fonts
- (Optional) Someone translates onscreen text into Japanese

For the artists, please reply immediately if you are interested in contributing. I will create a new thread and regularly update it if I can get enough participation.

Edit: The background artists may start right now, since those will be independent of the songs

Well fuck, I was planning to try to draw scenery anyway.

But the art in that video must be the art included in the album lol, so I think it's best if we wait until the deadline to make it?
I don't like the idea of putting a bunch of art in the PV and it not showing up in the final thing. It's like lying to a customer.

After thinking about this for a little while and talking with the others in the channel, it seems that we have enough pictures which can be used for the songs in the individual artist threads, so unless people desperately want to draw something new for this, don't care about it now. Also, I'm sure to include Squidtentacle's shimejis (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,7836.msg498717.html) random MUGEN sprites for a little bit of animation.
However, people should still start with the backgrounds as soon as possible. But I don't think there will be that many artists for this, and even then, I just take everything I get, so a separate deadline and judging won't be necessary. Just take your time with this.

Also, it's not like anything would be stopping us to include the trailer art in the final thing as well. Seeing as this will currently be download only, the art probably is going to be presented in some kind of JavaScript slide show and distributed in a zipped directory, so there's no upper limit to what will be included.

Sure, that makes it more lively. I'd recommend positioning them more on the left/right edges instead of the center. This way, they won't get obscured by the gameplay scene or the additional picture.

Oh man somehow I completely missed out on this!

It's too late for me to contribute a song (and since it's live instruments I have no idea how good it'd sound when recorded anyway) but maybe the "real thing" or next time or what not, still a big confused with what's going on even after reading the thread.

Oh hi triangles :3
You should come more often~

Let me tl;dr for you:
We're trying to release an album online, to gather attention to the Atelier and maybe raise funds for an actual physical CD.
For that we gathered artists and musicians. That's about it.
Oh, and you can submit older work, or just re-record something you've already done.

Another question regarding the trailer: Do we have some kind of entity who presents this project? It seemed that "Alice's Art Atelier" was decided as the circle name a few pages back, so are we running with that?

It would be nice if the art judges could decide on some kind of logo for this entity then.
Because I realize it's futile to request one being created, especially now.

It's not that important, but it would be a nice touch, and I definitely suggest it.

Also, Squidtentacle, be sure to register the website in time, as the URL should be included in the trailer.

Alright, I've been trying to meet with the other judges to speak with them about this, but so far we've had problems coming on at the same time, so I figured I should post here.

My question is this: should we just forget about trying to get everything done by Comiket and wait until the next convention to release the sample? At this rate, we have the voting done, but the website is nowhere near complete and neither is the video. Additionally, I'm sure several people, myself included, would like time to improve/add to their submissions.

What do you all think about this?

I think we need more time too.
We're all new and really lacking in experience in this, and we could use the extra months to come up with something of greater quality.

Honeslty, if we rushed and released it now, I believe it just wouldn't work.
