Title: English names for the girls
Post by: game2011 on June 19, 2010, 08:52:32 AM
Let us pretend that the Touhou series has been officially introduced to Western gamers, but some of the names have been changed to sound more "American".  What do you think will some of the girls be called?

Names such as Marisa, Remilia, Letty, Medicine, etc. will most likely be left untouched because they already sound like English names, but ones like Reimu, Sanae, Yukari, Yuka, etc. will mostly likely be changed since they sound too "Japanese".

So maybe they will become something like...

Reimu = Rena
Sanae = Sally

Okay, I can't think of much at the moment...  Try to come up with more  by yourselves!

Enjoy!

"Oh Sylvia, get me some more tea for me and Patchouli."

"Minna, I'm hungrryyyyy~! Where's dinner?"

"My name is Caramel, and I'm an umbrella ghost~!"

It's like 4kids naming stuff ;D

Reminds me of the "What if 4kids made a touhou anime?" thread. Goood times.

Also, Cindy is the strongest!

But it's America.

It's probably 4kids.

THEY THINK THAT ARBOK EVOLVES INTO SEVIPER.

Apparently, they think pokemon works like Digimon.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they called Nitori "Elly" or "Rika".

Title: Names for the girls
Post by: Tengukami on June 19, 2010, 01:11:31 PM
Iryan beat me to it. Also, why just English names? How about names from other cultures, giving them to a girl based not necessarily on sounding similar to the Japanese but of meaning similar qualities? You could, for example, say that Name X means these things in said culture, which would suit Touhou Girl X.

Yes, Shou could be Tigrisa, since Tigra is copyrighted.

And Ichirin is Wanda and her familiar Klowd.

IT MAKES SENSE NAO.

First the easy ones:

Yukari = Violet

Ran = Indigo

Chen = Orange (It was a name in Gunstar Heroes, so maybe it could work :V)

Kanako = Viper

Suwako = Slippy *shot several times*

Shinki = Persephone (or Helda)

Daiyousei = Fey

Komachi = Gwen Ree Par (Hurrrrr pun)

Shikieiki = Siriso (Spell it backwards)

Yuuka = Flora

Kaguya = Luna

Tewi = Hunny

Utsuho = Chere Nobil (Hurrrrr pun)

Yamame = Arachne

Byakuren = Teresa
Title: Re: English names for the girls
Post by: MysTeariousYukari on June 19, 2010, 01:55:51 PM
Rinnosuke: Roland/Rasche
Eirin: Could stay the same, or Rina. *gets an arrow through the head
Mokou: Althea (The references should be obvious nao) or Ignissia(Ignis = Fire.) *is burnt crispy
Cirno: Glacias (Ice) or Fatima... wait, Fatima is to awesome for Cirno *is frozen in black ice
Reisen: Bun Eyra Bit (Buney Rabit, Bunny Rabbit)
Sanae: Lucky
Yuyuko: Pop/Popourri *is smashed by a loli with amassive appetite
Nitori: Aqua
Kanako: Sadie *is blown away, into a snake pit
Sakuya: Samantha... maybe? Idk. It would need to sound sophisticated, and fitting for a maid.
Chen: Josie *is brutally murdered by cats and familars
Ran: Kite Sune (Kitesune, Kitsune)
Yukari: BayoVionletta

But honestly, a lot of the names could stay how they are. Look at FF6, Terra/Tina anyone?
Title: Re: English names for the girls

Sakuya Izayoi = Jane Ripper

(Okay, that one was too easy.)

Reisen: Bun Eyra Bit (Buney Rabit, Bunny Rabbit)
Ran: Kite Sune (Kitesune, Kitsune)

I like those two. Very clever. :3

Tina sounds foreign/unusual to Japanese people, but not to Americans. That's why they changed it.

Shikieiki = Siriso (Spell it backwards)

If you're gonna spell it backwards, why not just spell Enma backwards?
I think Amne sounds a bit more feminine.
Title: Re: English names for the girls
Post by: MysTeariousYukari on June 19, 2010, 02:59:59 PM
Tina sounds foreign/unusual to Japanese people, but not to Americans. That's why they changed it.

I basicly meant that the names don't have to sound normal/realistic/whatever in the language the game is in. Reimu could stay Reimu, Yukari could stay Yukari.

Hell, I if this topic seriously happened, if Touhou was introduced to NA as an anime or game, I think the names should stay how they are.

Oh man I love these things

Sakuya= Dia B. :V

Satori = Allysa
Koishi = Cherel
These could be reversed. I dunno'

Murasa = Debbie Drowner :V

Reisen, IIRC is also Germen for a kind of fighter jet or something, so that could be kept

Reimu's name could be a stealth alchohol pun like in Grim Grimoire

And Hatate can be Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta

err...

Yuyuko = La Llorona (The crying woman) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Llorona

Oh my God Yuyuko drowned her kids! Run for your lives

Quote from:  wikipedia

Digimon lets your monsters evolve into completely unrelated other monsters.

4Kids said that Arbok evolves into Seviper.

Oh...  I know about the Arbok evolving into Seviper one already.

Also, it seems likely that Gensokyo would have its name changed as well.  I can easily see it being changed into Eastern Wonderland or something like that.

Reimu - Michelle (I dunno, something about Reimu makes her look like a Michelle)
Marisa - Marissa (Yes, there's a difference)
Rumia - Rini (pronounced rE`-nE)
Cirno - Chilly Cindy (Yeah, titles, I know...
Hong Meiling - Hong Lee
Patchouli - Patricia
Sakuya - Selina
Remilia better stay the same...
So should Flandre...
Letty stays
Chen - Kitty Kayla (Someone please kill me now...)
Alice stays the same
Lily White, Lunasa, and Lyrica stay the same
Merlin - Meghan (Because Merlin is the same name as an old male wizard from English folktale, and all)
Youmu - Jenna
Yuyuko - Virginia
Ran - Foxgirl Fay (I dunno anymore...)
Yukari - Victoria
Wriggle stays
Mystia stays
Keine - Karen
Tewi - Bunny Beatrice (Okay, I'm outta ideas, I admit...)
Reisen - Lunatic Lucy (FFF---)
Eirin stays
Kaguya - Melissa
Mokou - Taylor

Okay, I'm ending this monstrosity now, as I am not getting anywhere logical. Any of them that names don't match the first letter, I assumed by looks...

Yumemi would probly be something like Raine(ToS) or Berry(Yumemi's theme is Strawberry Crysis), if changed.
Chiyuri getting a name change seems likely considering her last name(it's Siki/Keine caliber big) is something like Kitishirakawa.
Shinki should stay the same, but if changed, something Goddess-ish.
Sariel into Samael maybe :V
Shikieiki/Sikieiki either stays, or becomes something still fitting for an epic judge of an entire REALM made of Awesome,
Yuka... Sunny? I can picture. Fits with some touhou fanons, but not with others >.>
Elly would be Elizabeth :V *gets Megidolaon'ed for 9999 damage

If the dubbed version of Inuyasha taught us anything, then it's that "Youkai" translates into "Demon".  That's basically what Youkai means in the first place.

Taiyou no hatake is field/garden of sun.

Gensokyo - Phantasia, perhaps.
Reimu could probally stay, since she is a miko after all.
Marisa is already English(ish).
Kikako - Remember her? Anyway, Vidya. It's actually Indian, but it could be used as a pun since it looks like video.
Sakuya - Paige; it means servant in English  :V
Chen - Sienna. Means (basically) the same thing.
Ran - Indigo. Yeah, that's actually a name.  :X
Yukari - Viola or Violet. Don't think I need to explain this one.
Mystia - Sparrow. Yep.  :X
Aya - Evangeline. Means good news, even if she doesn't always bring it.
Momiji - Guadalupe. Yeah, it's Spanish, but it means "River of the Wolf". Plus the tengus' music always makes me think of Spanish songs for some reason (i'm weird)

aaaaand that's all i can think of for now

On a serious note, Eirin's name, if it got changed, would very likely be Selene, seeing as Eirin is from the moon, modeled after the god Omoikane, and all that.

Patchouli - Sarah or Elizabeth (Liz)

Chiyuri - Ashley
Yumemi - Josette
Rikako - Megan
Kana - Heather
Sakuya - Natalia
Kotohime - Anise (yes I'm using Tales of the Abyss names <_<)
Chen - Myau (props to whoever knows the game reference!)

Mieu, right?

Rikako - Psyche, cause all fanon I see of Rikako makes her insane beyond logical extremes.
Mima - Tenebraeth or Umbrako maybe? Tenebrae roughly = Shadow and Umbra roughly = Darkness
Youmu OR Yukari - Anna(Dancing Blade Chaos anyone?)
Rinnosuke - Flay :V
Eirin - Selene OR Artemis(both moon goddesses, Artemis also being a Bow-user, a huntress)

Not gonna ruin the namedrop, though I get it.

Youmu OR Yukari - Anna(Dancing Blade Chaos anyone?)
In my head, Anna was always a transplanted Youmu x Reimu baby~

Speaking of Reimu, she can be named Mira, because she's the Wonderful, after all.
Sanae is Kyrie.  Not to be confused with a demon OC I made named Kirie.
Tenshi is obviously Angela.
Yuyuko-sama can be Gabrielle.  I'd have said Cherry, but some other game already beat me to that one. :p
Don't need to change Mystia much, she can just be Myssie.
Flandre...well, Flandina's a known English name, but I think I'll go with Francesca anyway, because, you know, FRANCE.
Suika's full name is Virginia.  But she usually goes by Ginny.
And finally, Akyu.  Or, should I say, Amy.  *killed by Nitori*

Maribel = Marisa
Marisa = Maribel
Reimu = Raymu
Sakuya = Kimberly R. Johnson, or just Kim
Sanae = Sandy or Sandra
Yuka = Florida.
Youmu = Sakura (Must be pronounced as in Sakura Avalon!)
Mima gets to keep her name, but if ABSOLUTELY necessary, then Nina, or Mimi.
