Title: What difficulty did you start at?
Post by: SupahVee1234 on March 23, 2010, 07:35:28 PM
I started playing on Hard difficulty, with UFO if I'm not mistaken. Then after 1CCing some games in Hard, I 1CC'd IN and MoF on Lunatic.

But now I have a question. Since I didn't 1CC UFO yet, is it better for me to focus on the Lunatic difficulty (where I can hardly reach Murasa) or to focus on Hard (where I once reached Byakuren) then pass to Lunatic?

...

so, what difficulty did you start playing at?

I start on normal, which I expect to 1shot now (UFO was a 2shot for me, would have been my first attempt if them damn UFOS weren't more dangerous than the final boss), was pretty challenging when I first started, but doable after several attempts.

Personally I think everyone should start on the easiest difficulty that isn't too easy for them, provided you like Touhou, if you don't like it wtf you playing at all. There's just some kind of cool-factor to seeing how each spellcard or whatever changes per difficulty. Sometimes it's pretty boring like faster or more dense bullets, sometimes you deal with "options" that didn't exist before (like SA first boss' final spellcard on hard is kinda cool compared to normal IMO), or sometimes the card changes completely (redmagic/scarlet gensokyo). Generally not trying normal is almost cheating yourself out of part of the game.

Because of that I try easy afterwards too, I know when I tried PCB on easy, I felt some of the cards were actually harder than they were on normal. (Phantom ensemble on easy has more bullets than on lunatic ffs!...Of course they are slow as a snail).

Easy, since I was new to bullet hells. I didn't stay there for long though (no more than a few days), SA Easy really is quite easy. Spent more time on SA Normal as I officially got myself used to Touhou.

I didn't even know how to focus at first, and I still started on Normal.

At the time I accidentally pressed shift and found out about Focus, I had gotten to PCB Stage 4 without continuing.

Edit: Maybe I should go try a No Focus 1cc now that I'm a lot better, but considering much I fail at PCB, I'd probably fail that.

I started at "3 continues to clear IN easy".

Now I'm normal/hard-ish difficulty for the main stages, and I'm pretty awesome at the extra stages in general.

I started with Easy to get used to the series, even though I've had prior bullet hell experience (Castle Shikigami 3 mostly. It still takes a while to adjust to a new series' mechanics though), but moved on to Normal after one run. I haven't really moved on from there much... I can do individual spellcards on Hard and even Lunatic no problem, but I can't string together an entire run on those difficulties without screwing up at some point. (That's probably why I like StB so much.)

PCB Normal.

The music was disabled and I got quickly bored  :V It wasn't until I came back two months later that I was like WHOAAAAAAA. In the downtime my friend had thoroughly brainwashed me with music and fanworks.

UFO Hard was the one I started with. It made me want to hang myself, but it started me off with decent skills. Now I need the concentration for an endurance round or, as it's more commonly called, a 1cc.

Started out with Imperishable Night on Easy. It was a new game at the time and I didn't have much experience with shmups before that, so yeah.. Nowadays when a new Touhou game comes out I start on Normal for a few quick runs to unlock things and to get a feel for the game, and then I move on to Extra, or Hard/Lunatic if I'm not bored with the main game by then.

Easy mode, because the only shmup experience I had before Touhou is level 1 of Space Invaders.

Almost a year later I can consistently 1cc most of the games on Normal (</3 SA) and have cleared multiple EX stages.

Maybe I should move up to Hard soon...

Title: Re: What difficulty did you start at?
Post by: Poochy.EXE on March 24, 2010, 01:47:15 AM
My first time playing ever was on PCB Hard, in spite of the fact that I had next to no prior shmup experience. Captured Cirno's midboss spell card, and nothing else, then made it to stage 2 before I ran out of lives and declined to continue. Then I went to look up why the "Extra Start" was disabled, found out the requirement to unlock it was to 1cc on any difficulty, and switched to Easy solely to unlock Extra.

I still like to make a runthrough on Easy whenever a new installment comes out, for the same reason I like to score attack a song on Normal on Beatmania IIDX before I play it on Hyper, and play Hyper at least once before I try Another, even if I'm pretty confident I can sightread clear it on Another.

IN Ijji Modo.  It took a few runs for me to learn that I didn't have to concentrate on each individual bullet in my immediate vicinity.  Things then improved from there.

I haven't really been in a rush to get better, what with other things taking up my time and having to develop senses for how to play this kind of game.  That's why I'm only barely a lunatic after being here for three years...

Normal.

This, on EoSD (and slightly PCB) for months. Got to the point where I wouldn't load the game for weeks because I was so annoyed with it. Finally decided I'd rather not study a video game more than school, flipped Overdrive and that god-damned mindset the bird, and went Easy.

Still there for now, though I do play Normal and Hard to see how far I get.

Imperishable Night Easy because i suck.

When UFO came out i played it on easy first too and i also think that i'll be playing any upcoming Touhou games on Easy first. Immediately normal thereafter obviously. Then Hard and Lunatic if the game is fun enough.

Normal, then Easy but when I found out that I cannot unlock Extra on Easy, I went back to Normal. But when a new game comes out, I always try it on Easy first, then moving to Normal. I never play on a harder difficulty than Normal.

Oh ... that's exactly the same for me :V . UFO Easy for a few hours, then Normal right after I got a clear. I dropped it mid-way and went for Lunatic with infinite (ry though. After a while I came back to 1cc them Normals again and wow, loleasy. Cheating to practice is actually helpful.

I also skipped Hard almost entirely. It's just a slower Lunatic, good for 1cc purposes and nothing else :V

I played Touhou games on Easy by default until I got SA, which I figured I could try at Normal since I was a hard mode player by this time.

Got SMASHED by Orin, so went down to easy, 1cc'd on my first attempt, went back to Normal and managed it the second time.

UFO came out, tried it on Normal, got to Shou and got violated. Couldn't win after about 6 continues. Restarted next day, got past Shou, got to Byakuren, was destroyed. 6 continues, can't beat her. Next day, restart, get to Byakuren with 7 lives in stock, finish 0/1 blind capturing Fantasia. To this day, I have no idea how that happened.

When TH13 comes out, I'll be starting that on Normal too.

I started at Normal, although bjw constantly reminded me not to be ashamed if I felt I needed to drop down to Easy.  I still remember playing with max lives, getting game overs to Alice, and not being able to continuespam past Youmu, but I stuck with it and pushed on.  To this day, the only Easy playing I've done other than for lulz (usually with silly no focus/no bomb/pacifist restrictions, or with heavily unconventional control schemes like using a Rock Band drum kit... totally should have kept the video of that) was to unlock all of IN's spellcards so I could eventually go for 222/222 completion in Spell Practice.  I started clearing Extras and moved up to Hard after 1ccing EoSD through SA (minus PoFV) on Normal.  Sometime during my Hard career, I temporarily jumped up and bomb/continuespammed my way through some Lunatics, returned to Hard to roflstomp EoSD through SA (everything on Hard feels so slow when you spend a couple days on Lunatic), and have been a Lunatic ever since.

That said, UFO (being the first game to release since I started) taught me that just because I'm a Lunatic doesn't mean I can start there for a new game.  When a new game comes out, I start on Normal and work my way back up so I can at least pick up basic stage layout and spellcard concepts.  Starting on Lunatic and having absolutely no idea about what's to come is a big nono.

I started with UFO normal, but I dabbled in UFO lunatic probably from my first day. My thinking was that I was trying these games for the challenge in the first place, so why not skip straight to it? Not that I was exactly getting too far. I remember that it felt like an accomplishment to just make it to stage 2 lunatic. But a little later, when I got to stage 4 normal, I realized that normal was challenging enough to be fun after the first couple stages (considering I couldn't beat stage 4 at all for a while), and then I mostly stuck to normal, and tried the various other games.

Actually took me a while to beat my first game (partially because I unintentionally picked the hardest two games to play the most, first). Then I set it as a goal to 1cc everything on normal. And pretty much as soon as I did that, I started playing everything on hard. I've 1cc'd everything on hard, now, too, although I kind of alternate between playing hard and lunatic, now. I can still polish my performance on hard quite a bit.

I don't play normal much, anymore, unless I just want to see a 1cc ending with a shot type that I'm not good enough to 1cc hard with. I'm worried it will make me complacent. It's interesting, though, to have hard feel like normal did a couple months ago, now.

Normal, at 30fps, which I had not realized was not a good fps to have.
Then Normal at 60fps. It turned out to be too hard.
So I switched to Easy. Which just so happened to be a bit too easy.
And now I'm back at Normal, although I still fail.

It took me a week to 1cc PCB Easy back when I first started playing. Then I cleared Phantasm within the next week or two. Then I 1cc'd EoSD Lunatic a month after that.

Really an odd progression, now that I think of it. These days I honestly have no idea what anything besides Lunatic looks like in any game, and in fact have not even played anything but Lunatic since the release of MoF.

Oh, and speaking of rofltastic Easy 1cc conditions, my favorite was the one finger IN Easy 1cc I did a few years ago.

Practice and A LOT of patience. I'm still trying to beat SA Extra, and I have over 140 failures, not one of them have been success. My patience is nowhere near finished though lol

I'm still on Easy. Let the rabbits laugh, but Touhou is insanely difficult.

lol, that's because Touhou easy is Nintendo hard

people still go "how do you even dodge those bullets?" even though I'm only playing on Normal

I can give a protip that might cause a lot of "ewww" again. Basically after clearing SA Extra for ~50 times with HaxEngine, I was able to nail Koishi after two tries (this was probably due to being able to tackle each and every spell cards without fear of losing, thus getting me used to the patterns fairly quickly). I think you might want to try that ? :ohdear: Just don't turn it on in the real run.

or just plain holy crap.

which is what's going through my mind as I fight youmu...

I could probably 10CC PCB if I had the chance but it only lets me continue 5 times.

I did 10CC MoF though so I'm happy.

Note. 8 of those continues were for kanako

PCB easy. I play on normal or hard for everything these days, and just laugh at stuff I used to find hard. :B  My only successful 1CC has been SA Easy, much to my chagrin.

PCB easy.
This too. PCB is not too hard or not too easy, which makes it for a really good introduction to Touhou. It took me months to 1cc, however.

Normal, albeit briefly. The only shmup I can remember playing on easy was Ikaruga, because of that [redacted] return fire mechanic.

PCB Hard. I actually managed to make it to stage 2 (nearly 3!) before having to use a continue. I went down to Normal after that and miraculously 1CC'd it (using most of my life/bomb supply at Prismrivers). Then I figured that normal for the other games would also be fairly normal and went back to easy after playing SA Normal for about thirty seconds.

Easy's still the only difficulty I can clear, except for UFO, there I can't even clear easy.

Yeah, I'm really bad at danmaku.

PCB Easy Slow. Beat all of them on Easy, then moved to normal with almost no hassle. But that doesn't matter anymore, right?

I played Lunatic and epically failed several times on the second stage to get myself ready for Normal mode.

It's all over the place. At times it's lots of fun (see a good part of Murasa), at times it's borderline possible (see Kogasa) and at times it's either easy mode or total bullshit (see Shou).

I was fail at Touhou in the beginning too, but as I got better I grew into a perfect cherry blossom!
...That was the worst pun I've ever attempted to make.

I jumped into normal because of poeple on youtube going "Easy modo is for blah blah blah..." Which I was intimidated at first and I got over it.

My Sis on the other hand jumped ino EoSD Lunatic and got to the Stage 3 Midboss :X

It took me some practice dodging bullets(and dying to Rumia) on Lunatic, but after getting used to that insanity, Easy's a breeze. I can't really say how long it took me to get decent at Touhou, but if you can get to Koakuma(Stage 3 midboss) on Lunatic, or Sakuya or Patchouli in anything below Lunatic. then you'll do pretty good. Just don't expect beating it with 1 continue yet, 'cause Patchouli cheats on every difficulty.
