An old pic - Bloomers of Our Mikos

Ah, so you've found the headquarters of our artist coalition. Capital! Pull up a cardboard box and join us for a spot of tea and a chat. Here, have a mug. Ah, you're lucky, that's our last one with Shanghai on it. Here, have some tea and a scone. There's plenty of space in this tea cupboard for everyone!

Hmm? What is this place, you ask? Well, as I said, this is our headquarters, a bastion of creativity, music, quill, pen, ink and paint...and tea too, yes. What? Well, yes, it's a tea cupboard too, but you see, that's the strategic part - we'll never run out of tea here! What? We're sitting on cardboard boxes? Well, yes, all the better to paint on!

What do we do here? Well, this is where we artists of Alice's Haven come to discuss our arts and techniques....or ok, who am I kidding, we mainly come here to chat and chill ^^. But yes, this is a great place for trading and sharing experiences, ideas, sources of inspiration, techniques, etc.

All in all, welcome. Do make yourself at home. Oh, and don't mind the draft. We keep it for fresh air.

Just a notice to everyone - I'll be busy over the next few days, a little too busy to read every single thread, so if anyone comes across anything that Shiki might frown on then please PM me and let me know. Thanks in advance for the help~

I'll still be around, just not as rigorously vigilant as I should be.

Fixed.

Also added the recent new additions to the directory.

Now, for a conversation starter - what do you find fun about drawing?

Hmm ... Last night I had this idea of organizing an "Exquisite Corpse" comic -- basically, we get a bunch of different artists together, and each one makes a single page, and everyone sees only the previous page. Possibly make it explicitly create.swf themed (since that's how I'd want to participate).

Self-expression. Drawing lets me get lots of the cool/weird/funny things in my head, out of my head. It's a good way to relax, too.

And yourself?

I like to illustrate stuff from my fics. Most of the time, the art is meant to enhance the reading experience of my written works. But when I draw for its own sake and don't subordinate it to my fiction, it's mostly because I have all these ideas in my head that demand to be drawn and best of all, they're fun action poses and battles and things along those lines. The things I can't express with words, I put into pictures. So yes, count me in for drawing for self-expression.

Post by: Gappy on March 08, 2010, 07:46:10 pm
I draw just because it's fun to draw ^^ I never really thought deeply about it or felt I needed a stronger reason XD I guess I'm a rather simple person. I have the most fun when I'm creating new things. Thus why I really enjoy designing new characters XD I suppose it's also an outlet for my creativity/insanity/the-little-voice-in-my-head. I would go so far as to say it's anything as sophisticated and intentional as self-expression, but...

As for a comic we all contribute in...that sounds like fun! Would it be a touhou doujin or perhaps something original?

Post by: Dizzy H. "Muffin" Muffin on March 08, 2010, 07:52:37 pm
I was thinking Touhou-doujin. My original idea was for it to be done entirely in create.swf, actually, so it'd have to be something you could do with it.

Post by: Moerin on March 08, 2010, 07:58:19 pm
I just like drawing, I guess... Of course, like everything else I do I have to be in the right mood for it, otherwise I never get anything done, and when I do get something done it's, um, well, y'know... But I'm usually just drawing for myself, so the actual quality doesn't really matter that much, ahah.

...I like the doujin idea, by the way.  At the very least, it'd be fun to try out~

Aww, man, Solais, look what you did. You broke the bloody seal. Do you have any idea how much of a hassle that was to put in the first place? >:<

And as thoroughly unrealistic as it is for all the Artists++ to make a compilation doujin, I must confess it is a neat idea.

Sometimes when I'm not satisfied by how something is portrayed by other artists or the world, I get the urge to make my own portrayal. Not as if I can always make a better one, but it's worth trying. If I do get it right (of course, this is hardly an objective point of view), the feeling of accomplishment is amazing. Other times, I draw for fun, simply because I like drawing. I'm a bit disappointed that my drawing habits are quite erratic, though. :/

Yeah, it is impossible isn't it?

But do we care for 'impossible?' No! Go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb! That's how we artists roll! Who do you think we are?! WE'RE....

I wonder why no one here appreciates foreign artists.

Some artists, primarily a few I noted to be Dutch draw pretty well, though not anime, I believe people should be more open to other types of art.

What if we collaborate and make a music album, sell it at some touhou event and donate the cash to a charity?

Hmm ... Last night I had this idea of organizing an "Exquisite Corpse" comic -- basically, we get a bunch of different artists together, and each one makes a single page, and everyone sees only the previous page.
I like this idea :3c

I used to play a game like this a lot with my school friends. Whenever we had free time we'd sit on the ground in a circle, get several sheets of paper, and each person would write one single line on the paper, then pass it around, without reading the rest, and following an especific order, such as "At first (line 1), then (line 2), and so (line 3)", and so forth, with as many lines as players, so that each player would write one line per story. After just a few minutes we'd have a bunch of completely absurd stories, it was hilarious.

Doing that in art form, each page with an artist's style, should create interesting results :3
It's also a simple idea we could arrange easily

Oh yeah -- I found myself toying with the idea of running a Touhou Exquisite Corpse. Basically: a bunch of artists get together, and they make different pages of a comic book in succession, but nobody sees anything except the previous page until it is complete. It'd get more surreal than you know what to do with really quick. And this one would Touhou-themed~

Hello Artists,
look at your Acolyte Gappy, now back to me, now back at Gappy, now back to me.
Unfortunately, she isn't around much.
But if she had someone to help out with tasks, things would be better.
Look down, back up.
You now have a second Acolyte.
I'm multiacolyting.

Ahem.....

Anyway, as you may have noticed, Gappy's barely around at the moment due to real life being harsh, and stuff like the last Art challenge taking... was it two months?.... to judge is kinda not so pretty. And the current challenge is nearing deadline without any signs of Gappy around.

So to keep AAA running smoothly, mainly in terms of challenges and adding new Art threads to the Listing, I have been appointed to help out as a second Acolyte around here.
Anything you would usually contact Gappy about, I'm here for now, so don't hesitate to contact me on IRC or via PM.

I might also drop in on #atelier-magna from time to time if something's up, else you can always find me on #scarlet-library, the PSL-channel.

Well then, keep up the good work everyone and let's keep AAA the nice place it is  :D

Indeed you will. I will mention it in the Contest thread later as well. Since I have no idea if Gappy will be around when deadline hits, I would like if all entries were submitted to me as well.

Well, Gappy got the idea for an AAA-channel from PSL in the first place.

Also, due to her inactivity Gappy's nick and consequently #atelier-magna were unregistered, so I re-registered the channel. So... I now own both the AAA- and PSL-channels. How's that for a take-over? :V

Cause we're at war with the library and because we want to be just like them, but better Because the possibility of a separate IRC channel for the Atelier was discussed earlier with a certain librarian, I thought it'd be nice to set it up for our Atelier community.

But really, drop the sarcasm please, there's no reason to be so edgy. If you don't like me helping out here, say so outright and propose another course of action.

I'm in need of some artistic assistance (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=blog-20101208) with Create.swf Adventures (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=csa) (I didn't really get any response on my own site, and when I emailed the people who did say they were interested I didn't get any response); the "show me some example-work" bit probably won't be necessary because, well, people here have already posted art and I can go look. ;)

But yeah, can anyone help out a bit, if they have some time?

Yo, a few things--

1) Can I get a link (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,11944.0.html) in the OP?

2) What happened to the art tips/tutorials thread? Thinking of starting a new one. It could have a directory of helpful studies and videos and other resources, and also be a place for critique. I would also give it a witty title like "Art Tips Thread II: Like Hidamari Sketch but Less Glamorous" or "Art Tips Thread II: Border of Life Drawing" or "Art Tips Thread II: Ropes? Where We're Going, We Don't Need Ropes."

3) I kind of want to change my name to Res Ipsayaka Miki, but I like my Madoka avatar too much.

I was also thinking about the benefits of having these topics not too long ago. It would be great source to have (It should probably  be a  sticky so it doesn't get buried, lost etc. ) I also thought something like a Art-blocked/Inspiration/Motivation topic would be nice y'know for times when artist get stuck in that block or something of the sort and needs a few tips and such.

Seconding this. Nothing sucks more than an Art block. Maybe somehow we could extend that to Art&Music block topic. Maybe as a kind of idea dump, not as like random fandom ideas, but more like conceptual ideas. I'm looking at powerful words, concepts, moods, themes, etc.
An example of a powerful word/phrase would be 'chromatic asymmetry', which I plan on using for a Shikieiki fanart.
Just to throw some more out there, other good art block-breaking words I came up with are 'psycho-acoustics', and 'neapolitan'

I have a question. What does unlocking creativity have to do with learning to draw? I mean, I don't see how I can use this "creativity" that many websites talk about to make my drawings look the way I want them to.
Title: Re: [Intro/Social]Shanghai's Artist Coalition Headquarters(AKA Alice's Tea Cupboard)

Uh, creativity is what allows to know what to draw to begin with. Being able to imagine and create the details in your head.

Um, that's a rude way to say that what I said contradicted itself (which it didn't) :I It's not like I have a clear or even fuzzy picture in my head when I draw (which would be, as I said, something concrete); just an idea I can only describe in words. When I finished this picture (http://tidalespeon.deviantart.com/#/d578hfl), I didn't really have anything like that image in my head. Just the words "smiling girl on a cliff, from which you can see a path, a lake, etc).

@TERMspeon: I don't think anyone could have the product all planned out in their mind. The way you get to the product is where creativity kicks in. You have to find ways to portray that idea you want correctly. It's making stuff up as you go and making them fit in to your compositions.

Is that what you mean?
Title: Re: [Intro/Social]Shanghai's Artist Coalition Headquarters(AKA Alice's Tea Cupboard)

I originally asked what kind of "creativity" was necessary to make me draw better, and was answered with "being able to imagine and create details in my head", which means just thinking up the completed picture in my head before drawing. That's what I meant.

Though what do you mean by finding ways to portray my idea correctly?
Title: Re: [Intro/Social]Shanghai's Artist Coalition Headquarters(AKA Alice's Tea Cupboard)

Creativity isn't so much knowing what to draw as it is... wanting to, I guess. It's the drive. Having ideas, and thinking differently than everyone else.
Creativity doesn't make you draw better, it makes what you draw unique, and individualizing is very important in anything you pursue.

Also, this is completely unrelated and probably not my place, and I might be completely wrong, but... I feel like you're really doubting yourself, TERMspeon. I don't know why, but your words seem to ring with frustration, which can definitely be understood, and you're probably under some unfair amount of pressure. I've definitely had the feeling, when I'm just looking at manga and beautiful art and pose pictures and anatomy books and banging your head wondering, "WTFISDRAWINGIHATEMYSELFICAN'TDOIT"
What really pulled me out of it was finding this girl's blog; you might know her, she worked on Katawa Shoujo and does a lot of Touhou things:
http://raemz.wordpress.com
Seeing masterpieces and high level art only hurts my self esteem. Seeing really bad art teaches me nothing but the wrong things.
However, getting an email every week (I subscribed to her blog) filled with progress sketches and just random scribbly nonsense? It should've been fairly obvious, but knowing that the pros who make incomprehensibly gorgeous art also make rough, crude sketches without detail, without clean professionalism, without caring about what the critics will say:
Without attention to "drawing well." Rather, enjoying the feeling of making "art..."
That's what made me let loose, stop caring about what every individual finger on a hand looked like. Somehow that made me love sketching and drawing and myself, however conceited that sounds.
WAN I RAMBLED FOR SO LONG I'M SO SORRY... It's a  wall of condescending text...
I know I sound really demeaning and you might be in a completely different situation that I seem to be imagining so I'm sorry for being assuming. Whatever it may be, please forgive me, and good luck.

What. I don't get it. I just draw, what's wrong with that?

Creativity is all well enough when you're thinking of a novel idea to draw about, but regardless you're still going to learn how to DRAW in the first place. How do you do that? You study, that's all.

You study anatomy, you study backgrounds, you study color, light, all those tiddly bits that move you toward improving. If you don't study you can have a really good idea, but you can't put it onto paper, and that's pretty worthless.

Oh and pro people? I just try to blatantly rip off be inspired by them. Try out their style or something, the way of colouring, etc. You can't learn much without referencing others.

You don't think "omfg why can't I do this"

you think "Someday I'm going to be able to do this"
Title: Re: [Intro/Social]Shanghai's Artist Coalition Headquarters(AKA Alice's Tea Cupboard)
Post by: Teewee on August 11, 2012, 03:58:08 pm
Well, all these definitions of creativity are confusing me :/

@Shmarah: Well, how would I get that "drive", then? And yeah, I've been dealing with a hell of a lot of frustration (under a horrible situation that I wouldn't wish upon anybody), but that isn't because so many people are better than me at drawing; I'm just nowhere near good enough by my own (reasonably low) standard, because of all the time and effort I put into this. If I spent maybe just one year, I wouldn't be so frustrated (since my progress would be pretty good for just 1 year of time and effort). This is beyond just "slow" progress. It's "32 times slower than a snail" progress. Which isn't much of an exaggeration, if any. If there is a god, then he/she definitely hates me.

Plus, knowing that the pros don't always do amazing work doesn't really help...perhaps its my (actually diagnosed) autism, since I don't get how it's supposed to make me feel better.

Enjoying the feeling of making art? Easier said than done. Despite what my adult peers have been teaching me throughout the many years, I can't "just" make myself do something like this. Maybe there are a set of special psychological tricks out there to make "just doing it" work, but I don't know them, and I sure wouldn't be able to afford them (I'm not that far off from poverty, really).

Oh, and its ok, you didn't sound demeaning. I appreciate that you let out that "rambling", since it gave me a chance to explain myself better. And thanks for the positive wishes....I'd put a smile emoticon here, but right now I'm feeling terrible.

@Heartsriker: Who said that "just drawing" was wrong? It just doesn't help me, specifically (though apparently it works for everyone else). As for studying things, how would I go about it? Theres a reason that when I ask for feedback on my work, I'd rather not be redirected to dry books and theories that I simply can't learn from; I'd rather be shown how to make my drawing work at that particular angle. With good wording and picture edits. I'm able to learn better that way, after observing the corrected versions of my drawings at those different angles, which leads me to make inferences to how to make things look right. It works....I just rarely have people to give me feedback. I think there is another way for me to learn better, but I don't know what it is.

As for thinking something more positive than "omfg why can't I do this", that's also easier said than done. When you're as psychologically f-ed up as I am, simply changing the words you think doesn't really help in the long run. Especially since it feels like I'm lying to myself when I do it, which is a horrible feeling.

Maybe I could learn better from books that aren't so dry (though I am still using those dry books). :/ It worked during the time I spent trying to learn Python (which I've postponed to learn drawing).

@Heartsriker:
I think that's actually the goal, being able to just draw. I'm almost a little envious if you've always had that admirable attitude towards art, as it takes a lot of confidence to not bag on yourself so hard that you never improve. Very honest self-critique is the most important thing sometimes, but when I think "goddesses this sucks this sucks" I kind of feel inside that I'm only roadblocking myself...
@TERMspeon
You deserve a big virtual hug, TERMspeon.  :ohdear:
I don't think there's anything more frustrating in the world than the feeling that you were born being physically unable to do something as well as you want to. Being able to critique your self as accurately as possible becomes the first real necessary skill, and improving there first makes improvement elsewhere much faster, I'd think.
“Every artist has thousands of bad drawings in them and the only way to get rid of them is to draw them out.”
― Chuck Jones
I don't quite like quotes except as something to chant to myself on the verge of giving up.
That said, please don't give up, I'll cry! I'll be supporting you, and you'd better be motivated by that! Even if I'm a little forum girl on the other side of the world who doesn't fully understand your situation, it'd better mean something to you. (I hope that sounds as encouraging as I mean it to be, because some encouragement is what you need. "Ganbare!"  :))

Post by: Teewee on August 12, 2012, 05:31:12 pm
Thanks for the support :) It'd be nice if those encouraging words would really strengthen my resolve to improve, but they don't (my autism makes me a lot less sensitive to other peoples' encouragement, sorry  :ohdear:). But don't get me wrong; I do appreciate that you mean well!

So, the advice you offered me is to critique myself as accurately as possible? If so, what do you mean, and how would I go about doing it?
Title: Re: [Intro/Social]Shanghai's Artist Coalition Headquarters(AKA Alice's Tea Cupboard)
Post by: Shmarah on August 13, 2012, 01:25:45 am
For example, drawing a face, instead of thinking, "This looks bad," instead "This doesn't look right, I should try a slightly different approach." Then, you try something else, and think, "Oh, making this a bit more at an angle makes it look better." Then you try something else, and think, "Ah, putting a line there makes it look worse, I shouldn't do that again."
A lot of people stop themselves at, "This looks bad."
Like one of my teachers used to say, "Practice does not make perfect. If you practice 2+2=6 over and over again without correcting yourself, you're not helping anything. Perfect practice is what makes perfect."
 ;)

How do we bump our art threads without doubleposting?

For that matter, if we have something new to post, is doubleposting alright?

Hello,
first of all, I'm roughly 70% sure that this is the wrong area for this kind of thread, but it still seemed more suitable than others since this is where artists converge. If it's still too wrong an area, please move the thread, I definitely wish to apologize for any trouble caused by this.

Anyway, I spent some time thinking about presents for Christmas and I think I actually had a good idea. My sister's had her fair share of problems and even though she's mostly recovered, she still spends her days doing nothing overly significant. Despite that, she's definitely one hell of an artist, but her current situation has left her without any real drive it seems. She's got lots and lots of drawings on paper, but her drawings simply remain untouched and unseen by anyone, which is definitely regrettable since this is one skill she could definitely put to use. However, she's never really gone and shown her works to anyone because there isn't anyone she can show them to except for the family, if even that. I think it would be a great thing if she had the means to show her works to people on the internet since that would enable her to display her works and have people give her their opinions on them.

I was trying to figure out what to do about that and I think drawing pads might be the answer. Am I right in assuming that you can use them to create art on computers, bypassing the whole "scanner is too small/quality is too bad"-problem? If not, what other solutions would you recommend?

Assuming that I'm right, which drawing pad would you recommend to a skilled artist who isn't overly good with computers (yet, I think she could get used to it)? What's more, is any additional software required and does the size of the pad play a role? I looked up a few on Amazon and some people were complaining about certain pads being too small. I'm mainly looking for something she can use to figure out the basic workings and actually create something that would enable her to display her skill.

That's about it for now I think, thank you very, very much for any advice on this matter and sorry if this is, indeed, in the wrong area. If you need any more information, please don't hesitate to ask me, I'll try to give you as much information as I can if it can be of help.

If you live in the US, I suggest getting a monoprice tablet. They have good reviews, low prices, but sadly unattractive shipping fees outside the US.

You're talking about drawing tablets, right? :v actually she could also go the painstakingly way of Photoshop's line tool, but.. eh..

Drawing programs wise, there are freeware like GIMP but I would really just suggest, er, art programs that usually cost quite a hefty sum but can be found online free if you look in the correct places  :derp: For a beginner in digital art I would recommend Paint Tool SAI, it's very user friendly.

Ah, graphics tablets? Wacom and Monoprice are excellent tablet brands - I think there's one other great one (especially for Mac users) but I don't recall the name.

I don't really like using GIMP that much, but it is able to get the job done.

SAI is a popular program but it is Windows-only, though it can run on other OSes via Wine. Conversely my preferred application (Pixelmator) only works under Mac OS.

For cross-platform programs, I'd go with Sketchbook Pro, which from what I hear is pretty good for the price.

Wow, I've used Monoprice for cables and <$1 items, but had no idea they had their own lines of real hardware. Those prices are frighteningly low compared to Wacom, do they seriously work properly? I've got a super-old Wacom Intuos 2 that's about 5" long, which is a bit unwieldly with today's screen resolutions. I only use it for touching up things once in a blue moon and handwriting sometimes, so I figured it wasn't worth replacing at Wacom's prices, but this is tempting.
Title: Re: [Intro/Social]Shanghai's Artist Coalition Headquarters(AKA Alice's Tea Cupboard)
Post by: Bio on December 04, 2012, 11:09:30 pm
Wacoms are good because of their pen. I use a wacom tablet now, and use my wacom pen on another tablet pc (pressure sensitive etc.) with a cintiq hidden somewhere since my room's a mess to use.
First of, size doesn't really matter, you can do well with any size if you're a complete newbie to graphics tablets, getting used to it is easy. I don't deny that a bigger tablet makes it sometimes easier to draw curves though.
However paper based drawing is totally different to computer based. And not all skills are directly transferrable. Basic line art is probably though. But things like layers, masking, changing hue and saturation is another thing entirely.
There shouldn't be any additional software required to actually use the tablet, but an actual drawing program is usually required. I personally use a combination of Paint Tool SAI, Adobe Photoshop CS6 (still under school discount, hurray) and Corel Painter 12 (expensive things).

I guess the criteria you need to consider is, the screen resolution of your computer (not applicable with tablet pcs), how used to software drawing tools the user is (and styles of art that would like to be produced), price range, your OS and other technical things (like usb ports or what).

I do want to mention that wacom's come with a software disc that has Painter and Adobe Photoshop Elements however.

But that's the thing, a lot of Monoprice reviews (http://frenden.com/the-little-monoprice-graphics-tablet-that-could/) seem to say the things are incredible, superior or equal to the Wacoms, at a much smaller price. At any rate, it's more worth it than to fork out a lot of cash on a premium tablet for a first time user.

Haha, looks like you were right, had some trouble finding the thread again, thanks for the hint and thanks to whoever moved the thread!

Anyway, sorry for answering so late, thanks a lot for all the answers, everyone!
It looks like I managed to understand the basic approach, so all that's left is a choice which seems to involve either Wacom (which I had previously seen on Amazon) and Monoprice. I have yet to dig through all the reviews, but in general, it seems like the additional software (additional to any software that might be delivered along with the tablet depending on my choice) might wind up being more expensive, depending on what I decide on.
For the start, I mainly want my sister to get used to some basic workings of computer drawing and figure out if this is what she wants to do. As Biohazurd pointed out, it's different from drawing on paper, so it might not even be her thing, which would be annoying after a more expensive investment. Basically, the tablets that come with additional software, even though it's not overly complex, would still retain quite a bit of value given this situation.

General question, assuming it's not my sister's thing to draw with drawing tablets - do any of you have any experience scanning pictures and any recommendations there?

What's more, the screen resolution, in how far does it play a role when using a drawing tablet?

Thanks again for all your input so far, I greatly appreciate it!

Post by: pasu on December 05, 2012, 06:55:54 am
I have no experience with the relation between tablet sizes and screen resolutions, but I myself have done the painstaking method of scanning and doing computer art. Two ways, one is photoshop's line tool to create the lineart (I have a friend who does this too, while waiting to get a tablet) and my way back then was to use Adobe Flash, since it would auto smooth my lines. I got it free from a teacher

When she does get a tablet and complains how hard it is to adapt, tell her it's normal :v

Actually, instead of purchasing a program, you could ask around if anyone you know are willing to share theirs? For example, my dad borrowed the photoshop disc and code from his friend so I could install it onto my computer.

Sharing software bought with a single user license is technically illegal, or at least frowned upon. "Borrowing" it on a trial like basis is borderline though. Still think just using the freeware you can get (depending on the OS) such as the ones previously mentioned in the thread is still a good thing to do before investing in PS.
As for scanning pictures, I have no idea really. Your best bet is to get a good enough scanner and then do some light photo manipulation with something like GIMP to warp the image if the scanner didn't pick it up completely flat.
The screen resolution of your monitor should match the available tablet space on the tablet. There'll be a select part of the tablet where the pen will only work, in a rectangle shape. That box should have the same aspect ration as your monitor or else it'll go a bit crazy and when you're drawing your strokes will get stretched or compressed unnaturally.

One of the main things your sister should get used to is using a program as a basis for drawing, and the limitations vs advantages of them/ Using the tablet isn't really that big of a change over, ignoring the fact that you need hand-eye coordination (unless you get something fancy like a cintiq). Guess you can't really tell until you actually try though.
Title: Re: [Intro/Social]Shanghai's Artist Coalition Headquarters(AKA Alice's Tea Cupboard)
Post by: HakureiSM on December 05, 2012, 12:24:02 pm
I'm pretty sure it's more worth it to save money on the tablet and get a feel for it with free software/software demos than to buy a more expensive thing just based on the subjective value of pointless shovelware that comes with it.

Hand-eye coordination is prety much the same as one needs to draw on paper anyway, you just have to get used to not having your hand in sight.
Screen resolution doesn't really matter as long as the aspect ratio matches, and that's adjustable through driver calibration, anyway.

Honestly, the best bet here is to go for the cheaper Monoprice and GIMP or a PS/SAI trial, and see if she likes how a tablet feels.

Okay, so if I want to use a tablet and have a 16:9 monitor, I'll need a 16:9 tablet? Do the size of the screen or its resolution also play a role or do I really only need to consider the aspect ratio? I'm not 100% sure if I'm understanding you correctly there, it just sounds like there would be really big tablets out there otherwise.

The size of the monitor has no relationship with the tablet, the screen resolution isn't a problem either.
The tablet will probably come calibrated to a 16:9 screen(as in, the active responsive surface of the tablet will be in 16:9 shape) because that's the ratio for most monitors, but even if you do have something else, that's usually adjustable through the drivers.

I hope this is the right place to ask  :ohdear: When I color my lineart, the paint bucket tool leaves some white pixelly outline in some parts. I tried just filling that outline with the right color using the pen tool, but then it makes the lineart look worse and even awkward, like so (please ignore the incompleteness of the coloring). From my experience, without cellbrush/selection, the SAI program automatically calculates the area to be painted and therefore, leaves  those white pixels. If you have a tablet, try out [select] - [bucket] combo. Also try making the line little thicker by using 1.0 or higher rather than 0.7 which is the default while working in high-resolution canvas (ie. 2000x2000 or higher). I hope these tips help, nonetheless, happy drawing.

I'll try and mess around some more with that advice, thanks ^^ Oh, and a topic for discussion:

When I become a good-enough artist, I'll get to making a blog that shows how I learned things such as figure drawing, scenery, and such; using a comparative "this ver is wrong, this corrected ver is right, and here's a paragraph or two explaing why and how it works". That's how I learned best, and since there's hardly a resource on the net that teaches that way, I think it'd be a nice way to give back to the art community; as a thank-you for helping me and putting up with whatever in my brain makes it hard for me to learn art normally.

So, how do you guys give (or plan to give) back to the art community? :)

...did I make the topic right?

I kind of feel like the art community gives back unto itself with great art to inspire and motivate peers and young, future artists, but maybe that is because I am so motivated by 16th-18th century art haha.

I was hoping to finish my Reimu painting, but it looks like I was too slow and now I have to pack and then drive from texas to the north east during a snow storm :S

When i eventually get settled and set up internet I WILL be posting my painting dedicated to the lovely Reimu ;P

Don't use the paint bucket. Make a separate layer (or layers) for color underneath the lineart layer. Use the magic wand on the lines--the selected area will show up in blue--then add or subtract from the selected area as necessary, using the SelPen and SelEras tools, and finally switch to the color layer and hit Ctrl+F.

2) drawings should be concept first and then work on proportions because if you spend too much time and effort on proportions you're gonna tire yourself out :<

* About the hands size I like to use the facepalm method, you do a facepalm and after you imagine your drawing doing a facepalm, can the hand that you drew do a facepalm like you did IRL? Anyway don't forget that girls have smaller hands
* About the arm size, imagine your drawing touching the left shoulder with the left hand, does it look natural?
* The hands look flat because you drew it in a flat position, try to search in google about "relaxed hands";
* Also I like to use reference points when drawing complex things like hands, you start drawing from somewhere, like the finger 1 and use this finger as a reference of size, angle and position to do the rest of hand:
Noob example (http://imageshack.us/a/img811/3867/handsketches.jpg)
* Generally people don't use flat shoes, its sole has some kind of curve or slope, reference (http://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/1439636?tags=hata_no_kokoro)

I dunno about proportions and all that jazz because I hardly care about those, but y'see, your figure ain't...

...Natural.

Now I'm going to assume that Hata-chan here is 'free falling'. Try to think of the...flow, as it were. Would her arms be as rigid as they are in the drawing? Straight, with palms facing to the side? Doubt it. She should also be assuming a more...curved pose, while I'm seeing an L shape here.

Concept man. Concept. Natural. Think, think think.

...did I make sense at all?

im dumb and used my own hand for reference (although to be fair my hands are kinda feminine :V)

Quote
* About the arm size, imagine your drawing touching the left shoulder with the left hand, does it look natural?
i think the problem is more the overall length? i made the forearm and uh... upper arm about the same length which is correct i think???

Quote
* The hands look flat because you drew it in a flat position, try to search in google about "relaxed hands";

looking at it again i realize i literally drew them flat when i really wanted them at more of an angle toward the camera

man i need more practice at this stuff its haaard

Quote
* Generally people don't use flat shoes, its sole has some kind of curve or slope, reference (http://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/1439636?tags=hata_no_kokoro)

funny thing is i used her sprite for reference and it looks more like she's wearing funky socks than shoes but yeah it looks dumb. not every shoe has an arch though, like sneakers.

people's backs don't really "curve" that much though and legs can't curve upwards (unless you're double jointed or something which im assuming hata isnt)

DUDE WHYD YOU TRY AND ATTEMPT SOMETHING LIKE THIS WHEN YOU'VE JUST STARTED ;-; it is quite the dynamic pose despite it being quite common kudos 2 u

one tip i have for people starting out in drawing is to actually start drawing super deforms first because you get to make up your own anatomy its way simpler

but yeah- where do you wanna go from here? dyou want a reference of how it would look like in non super deformed?

e: i actually flipped kokoro to her side when i started (that is, the arrow was facing left) and constantly flipped her back up and back down because yeah : J

Hey Suikama,
Here take a look at this (https://www.google.com/search?&site=imghp&tbm=isch&biw=1366&bih=610&q=person+falling)
You'll notice that there is a lot of vertical. Whether it's the legs, arms, a single thigh, or entire body, something is going up. And the limbs are generally kind of all over the place. Right now your Kokoro's pretty stiff.
Also yeah don't worry too much about not doing well in this pose because yeah, it's a pretty dynamic thing... I don't think I'll be trying something like that anytime soon. There's a lot of limb things to take into consideration.

if there's nothing glaringly wrong with her general perspective i think ill just move on to color so i can actually finish before monday and then get more practice by finishing more drawings as opposed to trying to get my first drawing in a long time perfect like man what was i even expecting

Hello all! Hope you're all enjoying your summers (or winters perhaps) so far.

With all the free time we have I'm wondering if anyone's interested in collaborative projects for the summer? Here are a few of my ideas. Feel free to pitch your own.

- I've been thinking of extending our activities to other boards like Patchouli's Library or Rumia's Party Games by offering to illustrate scenes in their stories. I think it would help us get more exposure to the rest of the forum and even places beyond such as FFN where the PSL folk post their stories. It would also help generate traffic to our board. Perhaps this summer might be a good time to pilot this idea. I've been wanting to find out your thoughts on this. Good idea? Bad idea? Room for improvement? I would really appreciate your thoughts.

- a collaborative doujin/picture story telling game might be fun. Nothing serious, just a fun exercise. Thoughts?

- I've been thinking we should get together and play 'draw my thing' on omgpop one of these days. Link -  www.omgpop.com

________

On a totally unrelated note.
As somebody may have noticed, I also actively post in sos-dan.ru (it's totally Russian, yeah). Among active threads on this forum exists a "general art thread" (googletranslate works surprisingly fine with it (http://translate.google.ru/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&prev=_dd&u=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.sos-dan.ru%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D377)), where members may post, well, pictures with art.
I am going to build several art-packs with works of you MotK members, currently I'm thinking about Freeze-Ex, Aoshi, Merp and Formless. The reason why I wrote this post is to hear you opinion. Maybe someone will forbid me to post his/her works. Maybe someone will want me to include him/her too. Maybe you will give me directions on which pics you want to show and which ones you don't.
I'll wait some time before posting on sos-dan.ru, so if somebody refuses to show his art I won't regret posting them.
Of course, I will write your name and give link to your thread here, if you won't say to do other way.

Hello *bow*
I am new to these forums and I would just like to introduce myself. I have just gotten into the Touhou fandom, although I have been listening to the music for a couple years. I will probably just be lurking for a few weeks before working up the nerve to post something. I'm not 100% sure this is where I should put this, but it said 'intro' in the name. So I apologize if this is not the right area. >>;

PS. These Captchas are difficult...

The captchas suck epically, I agree.

Anyway, with regards to something said above, I'd love more collaborative projects! I think I'm the only Western Touhou artist on the Internet who didn't get in the AWA scroll project (found out too late to sign up -- SO. JEALOUS.), so it'd be nice to find a way to get into the art scene here and chat with other artists and work on big projects. :)

don't worry you weren't the only one, found out too late to join it myself and even then my art skills suck too much anyway so I wouldn't have been able to join regardless.

At any rate, recently when I've been trying to draw anything it just comes out wrong, even when I use the stick figure method, the box method and so on, nothing works and it's REALLY frustrating me in more ways than one, any ideas to help with this art slump?

Draw from a photo.

Doesn't help in the slightest unless you actually learn something from it. You might as well tell him to eyeball an anime screenshot.

Also yeah it's artblock, you have three choices. Do as Pasu suggested and doodle silly stuff, try and force your way through it or just take a couple of days break. You won't get anywhere stressing about it.

Went through GA threads. Man was that fun.

Maybe I should redraw some older pics? I don't think there'll be that much improvement (I still fear I cannot into structure and dem details), but it's still better than nothing.
Or should I just sketch in my notebooks? My time got very limited since September because of university first course must participate in a dorm party must attend leaf sweeping must do homework this lecture is so boring I must do something productive no Delfi you are asleep and then Delfi was on MotK complaining about his personal things
Wait what am I even doing.

Maybe you can look up a book for absolute beginners, one that goes into basic shapes and stuff. You might find it fun, and thus be more encouraged to draw more. Works better if you have someone to keep you accountable :)

Let me repost this here, as some people (like me before) could have still not heard it:
In it's current bare form, the Wiki is now open for registration (http://helpme.shrinemaiden.org/wiki/Main_Page). We currently have some resident artists interested in working on a logo for us, so we'll have one in due time. If you'd like to contribute a logo as well, feel free - if we have more than one logo we will rotate them!

Do you even imagine how it is when you cannot draw Claes, Henrieta or at least Triella, because you just fail?

Henrietta or Triela? (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,15184.0.html)

I know this is stupid, but at the same I really just feel like I have to put this out there.

That's all. You can resume whatever it is you were doing earlier.

Doesn't help in the slightest unless you actually learn something from it. You might as well tell him to eyeball an anime screenshot.

Also yeah it's artblock, you have three choices. Do as Pasu suggested and doodle silly stuff, try and force your way through it or just take a couple of days break. You won't get anywhere stressing about it.

mmm, I feel like there is a fourth choice as well~!
Usually when I have had art block in the past it stems from a creative block which forces my art down when I then try to 'force it'. I have found if I am feeling uncreative, or worry of an art block coming on, I have had a lot of success with doing studies; specifically on any subject I feel weak in. I will put all personal projects to the side for 3-7 days and just work on leveling up my technical skill.

On top of that I usually find doing daily 'warmups' keeps away art blocks as well. I prefer to do 20-60 minutes of gestures, but I know some like the artist Kronprinz prefers to do more like a warm up illustration.

I only mention this because I find this to be a good bit separate from the second choice of "force your way through it" because I do feel artblock is creatively driven, and have found ones derivation in technical skill on good or bad days to be really not all that big.

I hope nothing I said sounded really dumb, ha  and I hope that helped Zork787.

I also think you might like to get your hands on vilppu's anatomy lessons. They were fully recorded classes covers the whole body, different ways to construct etc. I forget which lesson it was but he mentions how he almost never uses one 'method' to construct a body and mixes and matches for whatever the situation calls for. His videos can either be bought, or found online using the obvious methods lol. Vilppus videos have helped me tremendously, the way he talks about the human form while drawing really opens your eyes and makes it look obvious haha!

What mote said on art blocks. Studies are brainless (in a sense) and they don't really need much in terms of creativity. Just copy the reference to the best of your ability.

Zork787 seems to be talking about an art slump/block from not being able to draw well. There isn't anything to do other than cringe or move on. Again, studies might be for the best because they are good exercise if you do it right. Reality before imagination.

Umm, hello there. *kinda new here*
I just feel uncertain about posting in the music thread link at the front page (since I mainly arrange some music).
Maybe, I can put it here?
I've arranged IOSYS's Star River (https://soundcloud.com/vixx_suramu/star-river-no-vocal) and Aya's theme song (https://soundcloud.com/vixx_suramu/late-year-celebration-leel) (which probably will be WIP forever... "OTL)

Wait there's a general music thread? I was just thinking of asking about it here too. Not that there seems to be too big or little of a demand for a general 'post your music' thread, or maybe simply even adding it in the title of the general artwork thread, since people seem to be doing that already already. You know, just, can't see any fish in the pond but we should try casting out some bait and see how many gather anyway. I was looking through the really ancient threads here in AAA and was surprised to see some of the veterans posting lots of music threads back in their day. May be nice.

Manga Studio is currently $15 until the 30th. Considering it's usually roughly $50, it might be worth a buy!

Now I started to try to draw heads looking down/up, after reading this notification I tried to draw a sad guilty face looking down but I think that she looks a bit angry too. Anyway it's fine, maybe chaging the mouth could change this but I am without correction fluid :V
I wonder if a GA-like contest was revived, how many people would participate now?
