Title: BioShock
Post by: Spidere on February 10, 2010, 10:31:26 PM
I need to start off by saying I got my copy of Bioshock 2 seconds ago. I had to walk to the store, so I'm waiting for the fog to dissipate on the back of the disc. As soon as that happens I can be playing what is supposedly one of the next greatest games of all time. Please discuss BioShock, BioShock 2, or, the game it is a spiritual successor to, System Shock.

I hated bioshock 1, so I won't be getting it.
before I continue *equips flame resistant cloak*
The game play was bad, and I mean really bad. And from the looks of videos it hasn't improved in part 2.
I also disliked the whole tape recorder thing, I'd rather watch a cutscene or conversation than trying to listen to bad quality tapes while also focusing on the game itself.

Big sisters look awesome tough :x

Did someone mention BioShock ? (http://www.halolz.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/halolz-dot-com-bioshock2-bomberman.jpg)

I'm getting Bioshock 2 within a few hours. Most of the reviews were positive so I'm definitely giving this a try :x

With that said ... is it necessary need to play the first game ?
Last time I tossed the disk somewhere because my computer wouldn't read it. And now I'm too lazy to look for it again >_>

It's a prequel that sets up the first. So play in any order.

I quite liked the first Bioshock. I haven't picked up Bioshock 2 yet but I am soon

Bioshock was a pretty cool game IMO.  Bioshock 2 I heard, got mixed reviews.

I remember in the first one, I shot Big Daddies on sight and constantly got GG'd.

Bioshock 2 is very disappointing.  I've played through both games.

Bioshock's main strength was that of storytelling - its plot was not great, but it more than made up for it with the atmosphere and means by which it presented the story.  Bioshock 2 lacks this.

The game is filled with plot inconsistencies, the gameplay is not expanded upon nearly enough, the characters are stale and uninteresting, and the whole thing is flat - like you're playing on something that is trying to be the Rapture of the first game, but feels more like a cheap knockoff.

Hmmm. I love this game. Much better than the first. I like the characters much more than the first. The weapons are more comic book-ish than the other one. Which is how I treat this game. As a comic book.

Also. SUPER SAIYAN.

I didn't like Bioshock all that much. I didn't really hate it though, it just wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

To me it felt like someone took System Shock 2, made it steampunk, then pulled its brains out through its nostrils. Bioshock seemed much more streamlined than it's predecessor and managed to do away with a few of its annoyances, but took away so much in the process that I'm not so sure it was worth the trade-off.

However, I did think Bioshock had a much better storyline and atmosphere than System Shock 2.

Right now I'm kind of debating whether to get Mass Effect 2 or Bioshock 2.

Not even remotely a question.  ME2.

Also this is wrong, it's a sequel.

I just got far enough into the game to see that.

And also, still doesn't matter what order you play them in.

Except for all the Bioshock references and spoilers in Bioshock 2.

Got BioShock 2, got past the part where you have to
protect Tenenbaum
.

Masterpiece. I'll definitely go look for the first game soon.

I like Bioshock's atmosphere and storyline, and found the gameplay fun, even if it was pretty grindy. I just prefer RPGs over FPSs generally, because I like creating a character and having freedom of movement.

I'm about an hour into Bioshock 2, and I've relised just how unfortunate the original's aspect of player training is - I have trouble following any orders or directions that people give me. Those of you that have played the original will know exactly why.

Enjoying it so far, like the atmosphere.

Wrt tape recorders: You can always enable dialogue subtitles.

I didn't like Bioshock, so it's unlikely I'll ever get the second.  It can really be described as a dumbed down System Shock 2.  There is no inventory, supply management is unnecessary, and the vita chambers effectively gave you God mode.  Not to mention the gunplay was weak and the plasmids were pretty lame once the novelty wore off.

Welcome to Rapture.
I love it.

Right now I'm kind of debating whether to get Mass Effect 2 or Bioshock 2.
Right now I am headdesking because my computer, as it is, cannot run ME1 smoothly. ME FRAKKIN' ONE. I can't stand it. I got the PC version because I heard it handled better, but that means diddly squat if the game runs at an almost slideshow-like speed EVEN ON THE LOWEST SETTINGS (well, not like a slideshow but it runs at less than 30 frames a second most of the time, especially when there's a lot of details onscreen). Another irk is the sound, when I tried to play it for the first time, I could barely hear the voices and such because the in-game computer sound effects and stuff drowned almost everything out.

Granted, I managed to get a little into ME1 (I didn't get past the first planet, tho), but if I can't run this game for crap on my PC, should I got for the 360 version despite the impending control issues?

Back on the subject of Bioshock, I found the first one good. I'm a little baffled as to why they added a New Game+ to the PS3 version only, and not adding it to other versions/BS2. The atmosphere's good, though I haven't gotten past the point where you get the Research Camera (blasted rocket turrets). I haven't played System Shock 2, but I like to think of Bioshock as a cross between half-Life 2 and Zelda in terms of item collecting and health management. I enjoyed it. Bioshock 2 looks promising as well, I'm gonna try it now.

And yes, I play on Easy mode with vita-chambers on. So what, it's not like someone's gonna break into my house and threaten to kill me if I play on Hard mode. I play games to enjoy them and their story, but if there's a good enough reason to play on Hard mode, then I'll do it. In the meantime, I'm just gonna enjoy my stroll through Rapture. ^_^

Btw, did they change the hacking system? I absolutely and utterly completely HATED hacking in Boshock 1. It was okay the first few times, but when you have to hack 1000 fucking robots every 30 seconds it gets boring to the point I'd rather waste ammo and destroyed the damn things than hack it.

They did, hacking plays like one of those "stop the needle" minigames. Stop the needle on a green or blue segment to get it to your side (blue gives a bonus depending on the object). Red shocks you and is considered a failed hack. Much better than the pip dream puzzles by every stretch of the imagination.

But could it kill PS3/360 develops to NOT make the text uber-small and unreadable on normal TVs? Gosh. I can barely read the text in BS2.

Every developer is trying to phase out older tvs and force us to use hd. It sucks. I shouldn't care though, since I use a 1080p plasma screen.  :V

But I do care. Since I hate HD being an absolute requirement.

I had to push my couch closer to the screen every time I played Dragon Age origins, and even then I had to squeeze my eyes to read it

I just beat the Bioshock 2, after playing for hours for the three days I've had it. And I must say, I got the compassion ending, where
Eleanor, takes off her helmet and extracts your ADAM, so you can work together as a consciousness, and be together forever.
It was quite sweet, actually. I saved every Little Sister during my run, which changes how
Eleanor uses your ADAM
in the ending.

There's two other endings. Also changes how your teammate acts during the final cutscenes.
