It needs its own thread. Not here.

Holy yes. This is...

My only regret is it would kill my computer in minutes.

Also, Mini-flans are adorable.

Oh, that looks so awesome.

I wonder if it will be harder to play than a normal Touhou game?
The patterns and bullet density look about the same, but those slight changes of perspective when moving might make it more difficult.

Lies. There's no way this wouldn't make me think of that game after I went and beat it on Hard. Its ingrained into my mind. I couldn't beat Very Hard though... I was like 8 okay ;-;

...now I want to play it again. God dammit who sold my N64 >:X

Now I really need to get that game again so I can RECOVER MY DIGNITY

Tetris Attack

Nostalgia get.

Yeah, it does kind of look like Pokemon Puzzle League, except with danmaku instead of rising piles of blocks.
Title: Re: 'Vampirish Night' Demo Movie
Post by: Ghaleon on February 10, 2010, 08:08:45 PM
Hmm, looked interesting. I know it's just a 2d shooter with a 3d spin (no pun intended), but it looks like it could be pretty cool like that.

The nature of the 3d movement automatically makes the game easier given equal bullet intensity once you get used to the new graphics however. Think about streaming attacks, you can never really wall yourself this way...Unless you're only allowed to spin so many degrees, which would be kinda lame since the indication that you could only spin so far would never be as apparent as the edge of a screen.

Nope.  You get a fight against Giovanni after that.  It's like the Butch/Cassidy fight midway with the initial 45 speed, but it's in 3-D, has twice the lifebar, and is 0% as optional if you lose :V

NOW I'm thinking of PPL, but at first I thought of Laplace's Equation on a Cylinder (which we're somewhat covering in PDEs).  I'm hopeless.

Also, Super Hard Pokemon Puzzle League was where it was at, because everyone knows that you have more fun when every opponent chains x14 and moves faster than your controller physically allows.~  Being forced to win two in a row at the end was... unpleasant.

Oh right, the game.  It looks interesting, but the danmaku looked easy and gimmick-ish for the most part.  Also, evidently the ceiling is infinitely far away.

That's what I thought at first, but then it occured to me that this is probably normal difficulty and I wasn't really comparing it to your average Touhou on normal difficulty myself. Hopefully it has a lunatic or something, and that wasn't it.

This is something that looks very cool. The DnB music works real well with it too.
My guess at this story is Flan wants to come up from the basement to play outside but nobody will let her.

3d movement

3D Touhou

it's in 3-D

uuuuuh eeeerrr you people DO realize the gameplay itself isn't 3D, like, at all, don't you? it's just ReimuA's gap hax on automatic for both you and the danmaku. a cilinder is just a plain surface!

having said that, it does look good.

I'd say the thing that stood out to me was the fact that there are no walls.
Thanks to this, we get these awesome patterns where things can move around the pipe - In essence, it's an extra dimension for prettier patterns, but the gameplay is still 2D.

I was saying that the tempest-esque movement (which is also called 3d in some ways) makes it so that you can stream in one direction endlessly, kinda like your mention of SA Reimu A.. Only much better since there's no god-awful 3 second delay between screens.

Maybe because its old game? I played Scarlet Meister demo back in 2008. If I remember right the full version came out early 2009. It was not playable for me, heavy slowdown in stage 1. :(

edit: the game is still for sale at Messe Sanoh Doujinshop. Cost 750 yen

I still win. Now I now who's played those games.

It looks as if it's leaving the Touhou-style danmaku and is using more conventional stuff. The game will probably give you walls on purpose so that you can't just stream everything, and either way it doesn't look like there's much streaming to be done. I also noticed that circling the stage and moving about it are two different things, which means either they're controlled differently, or the game will limit you at certain points, or it forces you into using only one style at any given time.

The game will limit you at certain points.

The normal movement is when it's the normal fairies.

The cylindric movement is reserved for miniboss spheres and bosses.

That's what I'm assuming.

Also, the way the camera turns clockwise while Flandre flies left and vice versa rubs me the wrong way.

Goddammit Midboss characters are awesome. They're the one characters the fanbase cannot ruin completely. One person gives them personality, everyone has to follow that persona. It's awesome.

The characters in general look pretty awful IMO. I mean, Zun art is kinda weird, but those are just portraits, the in-game sprites look fine... The actual in game models for this game though look really...ugh..

Actually I was more reminded of the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Special Stages (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33HlrHeoK0w&feature=related) than anything else 'cause it actually has you dodging stuff, albeit on a much smaller scale. I loved playing those stages to bits and pieces, so this looks very interesting to me as well

Also, while I do agree that it's essentially the same as a two dimensional game, one difference between this and a regular 2D shooter is that it loops around. I'm aware that you could loop pacman style in a 2D styled game too, although this cylinder could better take advantage of such a mechanic, since it can be designed assuming the full loop as opposed to being forced to work within the confines of a rather a rigidly formed box. It doesn't actually look like they're using this concept to its fullest potential though, which actually seems like a bit of a shameful waste.

One other thing of note: I think the gaps between the bullets seem much larger than they do in the actual games, while the hitbox still appears to be about the same size. This could be a bit easier for reasons completely unrelated to the game's perceived dimensionality.

Well!

If the only problem is miscommunication, then spread the news.

Tell the fans of Touhou about what's happened and do not leave out any important details. Same to the ones over at Newgrounds.

Once we clarify it and if we're quick enough, we can retrieve what's lost and tell the person making the games that everything is all-clear, then we will see an exciting game to play and such.

...besides, isn't it good publicity for your music to be featured in a *Japanese game*? I don't know, I would just think of the poison of oneself to acknowledge that it's a joyful thing.

The Newgrounds people (based on that thread) found out that he was credited in the game.

That problem is that he's been selling the game(s), and according to my reading of the license that counts as commercial use under section 4(b).  The KgZ would have to give permission to the developer to use his music commercially, and I don't think it's likely that he'll do that.

Like I said, the cause is probably the doujin community itself, which bases around using other people's work and rereleasing it in another fashion. To use stuff like that is a sign of respect and they probably didn't know better that we have different rules regarding using material. To have credited him shows that enough already. Either way it doesn't really matter why they didn't contact him, it just needs to be resolved now.

Is the non-commercial part of the Japanese version of the license (legalese version) similar to the English version?  Link here. (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.1/jp/legalcode)  That is, of course, assuming that the developer didn't try going off of the English version.

Putting the fact that English isn't the developer's first language aside, I wonder if the doujin community's definition of "non-commercial" (and perhaps Japanese law, I dunno) was part of the reasoning that the developer used to determine that using KgZ's music and giving him attribution was sufficient.  There's obviously a plethora of works based on anime and manga properties that, due to the scale and nature of most of the doujin material in question, isn't sufficient to draw the wrath of the studios/publishers that own those properties.

Something less ambiguous is that the license also mentions (in the legalese bit) that:

You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation.

While I believe most doujin authors are probably trying to make a little money that could also be left open to differing interpretations if an author is simply recouping the cost of actually making the work available (i.e. costs to cover printing a manga, or cases/CD pressing/manuals, etc.) instead of making a profit.  Some licenses like the GPL spell out that you're able to charge a fee to recoup those kinds of costs.

All right, I got a response. Here's what he said:

    --------------------

Thank you for send me KgZ's message.
    Your Japanese is very well.
And I'm sorry, I'm not good at English.

I know this problem a few days ago, and I want to
apologize KgZ. But I can't find his e-mail address.
If you can, please tell me his e-mail address.

Or, if you think my English skill is too much poor,
please translate and send this message:

    [translated from this point on]

    Dear KgZ,

    Hello. My name is Hiromu.
I wholeheartedly apologize for using your music without permission.
I realized that I misunderstood the license when many of your fans sent me messages the other day.

Even I feel like I am no different from a thief.
But I am deeply moved that despite that, you say that you would still provide me with more music.
However, I do not feel like I have the right to present myself to someone who creates things anymore.
I have already suspended releasing my game to the public.
It is difficult to prevent others from uploading videos, but I will delete any as soon as I find them.

    I truly am sorry.
I don't know whether this will bring an end to your anger, but I looked at a ton of music. Of the songs I listened to, yours were unmistakably the most magnificent. I deeply regret not taking the time to clearly understand the license or contact you.
I'm so sorry I caused you trouble.
Please find it in your heart to forgive me.

Helmbot, please translate:

Dear Hiromu,

I accept your apology regarding my music. Again, I am deeply sorry that some of my fans harassed and spammed your accounts the prior days. Let me be clear that it would be very disappointing for you to suspend game development. I saw the video and it seems like you put alot of effort into your project. Please continue your work so that touhou fans can enjoy your games.

Even if you feel uncomfortable using my music, from this point on I have no problem with you using any of my songs. If you decide not to use my music material anymore, that is fine as well.

Take care,

KgZ

And it looks like sorohanro admitted and apologized for overreacting/being a douche :V

I didn't do anything other than copy those posts over here.

Now it's just up to Hiromu to decide if he's going to continue working on the project.

I know, you're still a hero because I'm very bored and want to cheer someone.
