I am currently planning the next book in my Touhou-themed English textbook series, New Hori-ZUN. As it is based on the English textbooks here in Japan, I would like to make them as similar as possible, and one of these factors is an audio CD of readings of the material in the textbook. It wasn't included in the first book because I wanted to focus on making the book part first, but now that I know what I'm doing with that (more or less), I want to start seeing if I can't get this together.
There are two tasks I need voices for:
1. Reading the material in the book
Requirements:
- Native English speaker (American English preferred, but if close enough, I'll accept it)
- Female (All the characters are girls after all...)
- Must be able to record in decent quality
The more voices, the better, since I'm going to have every Level 3 and 4 boss and mid-boss speak (except for Cat Orin). If you can act in multiple voices while still speaking clear English, then that works too. I would prefer to have one voice per character, but we'll see what happens. Let me know what characters you want to audition for when you volunteer. Remember, acting is important, but this is an English textbook. Try to speak clearly and naturally.
2. Singing (not entirely confirmed yet)
Requirements:
- Native English speaker (or really good anyway)
- Male
- You will be singing my translation of "The Highest Fastest Shutter Girl" by Cool&Create
Don't worry about sending auditions for this until I can get more confirmation on it.
I should be able to handle mastering and stuff, but definitely try to record things in as good of quality as you can. Maybe I will find some guidelines on how to make high quality recordings later... The deadline is still far in the future, since this won't be out until Summer Comiket (hopefully), but I want to start planning while I'm writing the book so I can keep everything in mind.
As for compensation, I think a copy of the book or two would be reasonable, similar to what Nakazato did for the Aki Sisters thing.
If you are interested, post in the thread or PM me. If you have any friends who might be interested, tell them about it too! I'll probably make an e-mail for this project so even non-MotK members will be able to help.

I'll offer my Tewi-with-a-monocle voice

Suddenly I am very interested.
-
In case anyone needs it... (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?nw5wn3nlyvq)
-
I could possibly do #2.
-
I am good at speaking english... or arleast decent (as i am the only one in my class who can read through an english book in just two weeks without running into any serious understanding problems).
I can also sing very well, but i do not like my voice that much, but whatever. At least i can help somewhere.
-
Tewi is a level 5 mid-boss. Next book maybe. :P
Somehow I knew I'd have more volunteers for the song, heh. It probably isn't going to be exactly the same translation that's currently on the wiki though. I'm going to have to change it a little more, so the rhythm and accents are more natural. Like I said though, that still isn't set in stone yet, and it won't happen at all unless the first part is done.
-
I would've volunteered for the first thing, but I have a little too much penis for that. :C
-
Do you have a link to the lyrics? I can take a stab at the, uh, flowability of the lyrics if you don't mind.
-
Here you go (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Lyrics:_%E6%9C%80%E9%80%9F%E6%9C%80%E9%AB%98%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A3%E3%83%83%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AC%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AB)
I tried to make the syllable count match exactly, but I'm beginning to think that might not have been the best idea.

Though I won't volunteer because there are much better singers than me here, may I give some comments?
You should definitely change some things. I tried singing that one before, and though it was possible, there were some parts that sounded really unnatural because I had to speed up / slow down words/phrases in a weird way.
What I remember especially were the two sentences that ended with 'illusion/confusion', and the 'will beat her wings even stronger', which was a pain to get halfway right.
Also problemtaic was the 'Now go all out..'-part, because it consists of long transitions between the syllables in Japanese, which doesn't work in English.
EDIT: Actually, my last sentence was bullshit. Listening to it again, I think it's simply more words in the Japanese version than in the English, and that makes it difficult.
-
I would be keenly interested in helping. Unfortunately, I do not own any recording devices.
If I could help with some other function, I would. Otherwise, good luck, I hope it goes well.
-
Possibly can apply for the singing part ( suprising huh ). Not native but I guess speaking is something I relatively master quite well.
-
poorly i am only male... so no part one... i guess... :V
-
I'd love to help for #2, but my microphone is junk, sadly. I have a pretty in-depth knowledge of English, being an English Canadian, however I tend to screw up words every so often when speaking...
I'll audition anyways, though, don't worry about that.
-
Native American-English speaker here, with voice-over experience and recording devices. I'm in for 2., if you need me. Think it'd be fun. Decent singer, too, when I concentrate.
-
Damn i thought i could do something for this, too bad im not a native english speaker...well that and having a third leg xD
(no not at the right arm, i mean between the legs)
-
I would love to do #1, but I kind of have a penis and so I can't. :(
I could try #2, I guess, but I don't think I can sing very well...oh well, might as well try.
-

This. I really would like to read this thing some time though, seems interesting.
-
I appreciate the interest, but can we not be vulgar about this? Thanks.
-
Er, sorry about that. >_>
Also, would using a voice changer be a viable option? Some voice changers can be really convincing in changing a man's voice to a woman's (one of my friends has used Screaming Bee to change his voice to a perfect imitation of a teenage girl's voice).

This. I discovered this by accident on Phantasy Star Online - it has voice filters, and I was messin' around with it once and suddenly went from Pleasing Baritone Husky Male to 11 year old schoolgirl.
My friend refuses to play on PSO with me now.
-
Never considered that, although I'm not sure how that would affect the sound quality. I'll keep it in mind but I'd like to use genuine females for the moment if possible.
-
If it wasn't an Aya PV I'd volunteer for the singing, but my principles of hatred dictate otherwise. I'll keep an eye out if you're doing something else, though.
-
Haha. I don't think my voice is high enough anymore to genderswap - I'm no longer Pleasing Baritone, more like 'run that by me one more time a semi just blew its jay-brake and oh that WAS you talking nevermind'
(read - puberty strikes, again)
-
Dammit, I was hoping to genderswap record my voice, but someone beat me to it... let us know if you become more open to that though... I don't sing.
-
Hmmm... can this be moved into the Recovery Center forum? I don't know if it really fits here...
OK, I think I have a couple more voice actors on board. Somehow I have a feeling that this is as good as it's going to get, and since I won't have more than 3 characters in a chapter anyway, it should work out well enough.
triangles: Tell me which characters you really want to voice. The only two characters the other actresses wanted were Marisa and Alice, but other than that, there shouldn't be a problem.
As for the song, I'll start working on revising the lyrics soon enough so everyone interested can have time to practice.
-
Hmmm... can this be moved into the Recovery Center forum?
Done.
-
Wellllll, I have a pretty high pitched voice naturally (my voice hasn't changed any since I was like 13 :'() so Marissa and Alice probably wouldn't have worked for me anyway! I can whip up a quick voice sample MP3 of the various pitches I can talk in in the next day or so, and then you can see how that jives with the other ladyfolk and assign Touhous that way, that might work best?
-
Hmm, I guess that works if you have no preference otherwise. Sure.
-
Not really - all of my favorite characters are either bosses of other stages or I'd personally see as much more mature sounding than I am (I'm lookin' at you, Yuugi...) I can give my interpretation for whoever's left anyway and you can just pick the ones that work?
...though I need to get over this blasted cold first ::angryfist::
-
Well I'm female and I would love to help out with #1. I wish I could help out but unfortunately I lack any sort of way to record my voice. :(
-
I'm a female with a way to record my voice, but I'm not sure about the quality. Plus, I really doubt my voice would really be good for anything... I would love to help, though!
-
I don't have much of a voice, but I am curious about those lyrics.
-
miso: Yeah, the quality might be an issue. Maybe you can find some guides online to help you get good quality recordings? If you can, let me know and we can go from there.
Ruka: It's on the Touhou Wiki.

Alright, a bit of an update.
I currently have 3 + ? voice actresses for the main text, although the only one from here who is doing this is triangles and I've already told her about it.
But seeing as how there will be an audio CD with the book and now that I've pretty much finished writing the main text, I started to work on making the song lyrics flow better and stuff. I still haven't asked for permission yet, so it's not 100% going to happen, but feel free to look over the lyrics, get a feel for them, ask questions, make suggestions, whatever. I'll ask for auditions fairly soon, probably once I am able to get permission to use it.
The High-Flying Shutter Girl
These are the wings of the crow tengu girl
Who's called the fastest ever to fly
They take the wind and in an instant can
Create a storm no one can defy
Justice runs through every single part of her way of life
Everyone knows that she will strike now as sharp as a knife
Only the fastest and the greatest points of fascination for her
To reach the highest of heights, she will beat her wings ever stronger
FLY HIGH
Your speed and skill are the envy of everyone you know, so don't look back
And reduce everything to a blur
These are the wings of the crow tengu girl
The reckless whirlwind without a foe
They change the wind so free and easily
These thousand years were not just for show
To know the truth, she'll quickly cut away all of the lies
No one can hide, 'cause no illusion can fool these sharp eyes
Now go as fast as you can fly, because you know that you'll find a way
From the point of no return, keep going farther and higher away
FLY HIGH
Everyone's eyes all try to keep up, but they see that you're already gone
Soar up above and over the fray
Only the fastest and greatest points for you
Giving it all, going as fast as you can fly too
You must take a stand, and force your way through
To know what's ahead is to know your fate
FLY HIGH
Now is the time to accelerate

Just wondering... if I would do this, do you have to do it in english or in engrish?
-
What are you saying?
This song is supposed to be the "English language song" found in almost every English textbook here in Japan, so I would prefer a native English speaker (or similar) to sing it.
-
Hmmm.... I remember someone did a half decent Fandub of Bad Apple a while back. Perhaps you could contact her?
Also, you're the one who created NEW HORI-ZUN? Wow...
Anyways, is it possible to sneak a camera into comiket or retaisai and take a video of it? I really wanna see how this sells.
-
Well, the original vocals for this song were male, so I would like male vocals for this as well. And it would be very hard for me to sneak anything into Comiket, given how much I stand out just by being there.
But seriously, what happened? I had so many people volunteering for this a while back, and now nothing? I guess this might not happen after all.

The singing right? I'm still interested in the sound-studioificated faux-female lines if you're willing to, of course I'm willing to give you some samples first if you like...I don't sing though >=P.

what if you put it in a bag?
-
what if you put it in a bag?
Son, I think the bigger problem is that it's a big public event and people are gonna be all "ZOMG TERRIST THEVES" and searching any sizable bags going in and out for stolen goods and anything else suspicious.
A better question would be "can you ask to bring a video camera" and possibly "how much do you need to buy a camera to bring."
And, I think that most people interested in doing the lyrics are hung up on knowing whether you can get permission to use the song. I'm not exactly a music expert, either, so I don't think I'd be much help getting the lyrics to work for the song...
... speaking of which, a link to the song itself would be good. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOeYY3-5vOU)
I... think I can sing, but I'm very, very bad about actually practicing ever, may not have good recording equipment, and I'd always have my parents somewhere around, so embarrassment is an issue. I might be able to, but I'll probably be unreliable.
Also my voice is really low, so it may or may not have to be shifted down an octave.
-
If you aren't opposed to a female vocalist I have someone interested who's pretty awesome at singing.
-
One of the other voice actresses is also a pretty good singer too, so I would've just asked her. But I wanted a male vocalist and there were at least 5 volunteers on the first page but no one has replied since I put up the edited lyrics. :/
-
I'd volunteer... If my voice didn't sound like the Call of Cthulhu
