Title: The SANDY YAKUMO Studies
Post by: Easy Mode on January 09, 2010, 04:13:33 AM
I saw my first otakukin on an old LJ I used to frequent years ago. I knew it existed, but until now have never seen it for myself.

I was checking up on a really, really old HaseoxEndrance community. Yes, I used to be a .hack yaoifag. Sixth and seventh grade, everyone has a past to be a little ashamed of. Now, this guy (or girl, but it is the internet we're talking here) really, truly believed they were Endrance from .hack//GU. But what I didn't understand the most is why the fuck he wasn't ostracized for that batshit mentality.

So here's my plan. I'm going to go into a site pretending to be an otakukin Touhou. Who should I pretend to be and where? Touhou seems to be untouched by this terrifying shit so far, so I'd thought I'd try it myself.

Will it be as accepted  just as other, more popular series are? Or will it receive a nasty response?

If I do do it, I'll document my findings here.

Also, let me clarify. We are not talking men who wish to be the little girl. That's all the Touhou fandom really is. We are talking men who really believe that they are the physical/mental reincarnation of the little animu girl. I can't make this shit up, these people are fucking nuts.

Urban Dictionary:
1. otakukin
The horrible, fiery collision of the otaku and otherkin subcultures. I.e., people who believe they are somehow involved with/reincarnated from the souls of anime/video game characters. Japanese pop culture is literally their religion. And no, it's not a joke. They are the ultimate illustration of how utterly batshit insane the Internet has become.

Fantastic example! (http://forum.deviantart.com/community/complaints/612247/)
THIS IS THE STORY OF SANDY

Hi there! My name is Sandy, but that isn't why I'm here.

I am the Earth plane #183 incarnation of Ran Yakumo.

See, what I believe is that at one time, I was the proud, beautiful Ran Yakumo, happily serving under Yukari Yakumo on the boundaries , Gensokyo plane #46. Nowadays, I channel Ran in everything I do.

I am Ran Yakumo. Today, tomorrow, and in the past. I do not speak for myself, as she speaks for me. XP Yukari is my sleepy mistress, as she has always been, and I now reside spiritually on the borders of Gensokyo.
I am the kitsune shikigami of Yukari, along with Chen. I am more than content to pull Chen close and give her a hug with my tails. All nine of them. ^^ She is a neko!! Sometimes, her nails are rather sharp so I have to be careful. :)

You may be asking how I was born in another body. Now, more than eight hundred years ago, I was born as a regular fox. But later, I began life as a kitsune! Through the Andromedean Adonis plane, #120, my soul was put into this human body. :) To this day, I still live my regular life as myself, but sometimes Sandy's cumbersome human body gets in the way. It's okay though! ^^ The Mother Goddess just made a mistake and put me in the wrong plane. One day, I will leave Sandy's body and merge us into one!! :)

Sandy is my host body. She lives in Omaha, NE, a silly human town, and is 24. Yukari comes to visit every day, as she is the only one that can let me use the special Gensokyo computer in the human world! Sandy works as a mail clerk at her mom's office and lives in an apartment with her goldfish Youmu and Yuyuko. Many times I have tried to eat them! They sure do look tasty!! :)

Sometimes I feel as though the human world doesn't understand me. The shift from Gensokyo to here is quite a big one, so I am hoping I can make friends and even more with those who aren't humans!

Sandy and I thank you for letting us introduce me!

Aliiiiice. You know you want to.

Then again, Reimu/Marisa/Sakuya would probably be more likely recognized by people who don't know Touhou.

That would be an interesting read.  It is kinda hard (for me at least) to pretend to be an otakukin since we do not fully understand their mentality and reasons for doing such things.  Maybe you could pretend that Yukari border-hacked her soul into you or something.

Maybe they just want attention.  :-

Edit:  Would this be considered "role-playing"?

Be Alice, but the cool, Cold bitch who hates everything and everyone Alice.

Alternatively, Alice mc 'My doll has a fucking razor and death glares with me. Bring it.'

Actually, Convincing yourself you're Alice by doll obsession and tsundere attitude seems the MOST plausible, of all characters.

Possibly somewhere pretty but with a lot of trouble. You make a false mental case?

I kinda like the Jersey idea.

Why would the reincarnation of Alice live in Jersey?

I can handle the rest of the bio myself.

But now I need a place to start my testing. A web site.

Proxies would look suspicious, wouldn't they?

Besides, Nebraska opens up the "lived in the countryside all my life, not much to do, always found dolls fascinating, decided one day to try making some of my own, found I was surprisingly good at it" route.

I'd avoid LunaticRed if you're testing for Touhou-character inclusion into Otakukin communities. LunaticRed is already a Touhou community, so it'd be more like testing whether the more spamteeny-age Touhou groups would accept Otakukin.

tl;dr you probably want an Otakukin site to annoy, not a Touhou one.

Otherkin Retreat, maybe? Or The Otherkin Community? The Retreat seems to  be barren. :/ But still.

I like the Ran, Yukari, and Alice ideas. Maybe even Medicine for obscure measure. This is a really difficult choice. Ran is good for more role playish situations, Yukari is great for magical bullshit, and Alice is also nice for backstory.

Most of them don't have rules against certain types.

However, in one thread, a girl who was a dragonaire was promptly banned. So, I'm hoping that with a lesser known character, things might be easier.

The same site, Otherkin.com had a rather annoyed welcome:

Otakukin seemed to be disliked everywhere so far. However, I'm not even a day into my testing so I can't conclude just yet.

Everything we have comes at others' expenses, mostly unwittingly.  There's no point in pretending you can live a happy life without adversely affecting others, and there's nothing evil in screwing with people a little.  The sentiment is appreciated, but you shouldn't try to guilt-trip people out of having some harmless mischief.

Everything seemed pretty good to me except this; I mean, everything else could be explained by insanity except this part.

Also, yeah, it does seem like Otakukin probably aren't accepted nearly as well as Otherkin. Theres a good difference between "I was a dragon in a past life" and "I was this exact person from this specific place and time", not to mention less possible roots in spiritual belief then the former etc. And Otakukin is just plain creepier.

Totally interested to see how its going to go, although hopefully it gets better from how its going now.

Otakukin seemed to be disliked everywhere so far. However, I'm not even a day into my testing so I can't conclude just yet.

You could always try the Reasonable Troll approach, i.e., "Hey, you know guys, I'm sure you've had to deal with a lot of crap from other people because of who you are. People who mocked and belittled you, who didn't understand where you were coming from. All I'm asking is that you afford me the same respect you would want for yourself. That's not too much to ask, is it? NOW ABOUT MY DOLLS"

This whole thing reminded me of a girl we had in a Japanese class who claimed that she had been a samurai in a previous life, and that that was reason she had an easy time learning Japanese.

It was hard to keep from laughing aloud in front of her when she said that, especially because everyone else unanimously considered her to be the worse Japanese student ever.

You know, I can actually imagine a lot of historic persons that one might claim to be that would creep me out way more than anime characters or the like. I'd rather have someone trying to shoot me with magic or dragonfire than someone who thinks he's, say, Jack the Ripper and acts it. (Yes, I like worst case scenarios  :V)

I'm just guessing here, but either 1. the events of highlander occurs 2. one things that they're an earlier incarnation of the other or 3. they both end up thinking they are one part of that character, and go off to collect the others, to eventually revive said character, but then this is all just random ideas that are coming from my skull

The Otherkin forum seems to be very uppity. It's okay to believe you're a wolf that never existed, but it isn't okay to believe you're a made up character. It's the same thing, isn't it? I'm formulating a final response for when everything either falls apart or sticks to the plan.

This is by no means going to be a short project. Tenshi, the "reincarnation of Beatrice", and I are talking about making an LJ community and joining plain Otherkin ones. If we get additions, this will allow us to see what they are like unperturbed and on their own, and when more than one attempt to be included together in a possibly hostile territory.

Some guy was trolling him for drawing in Moe style, but the guy who was doing the trolling also drew in moe moe style, so Mauller convinved this guy to be his freind and that he wanted to help him with an anime about a maid who had to whore herself out or her master would die, but someone broke their leg during the filming so they couldn't make it, but then this guy found out it was an elaborate counter troll and REAGED and it was funny.

Alright, I didn't want my hand in this, but I want to see you succeed a little. It's time to dig up from Creepy Uncle Zakeri's shady closet.

The reason most of these people seem to be annoyed with you, and why many of them don't seem to believe you is because you look like you're taking this sort of 12 year old fangirl mentality to it (And in all fairness, you are).

If you seriously want to crawl into these people's minds, you need to deepen your disguise to look more like one of them. This doesn't just stop at gauging whether other people will buy you thinking you're specific character X of specific alternate universe Y. The important part is making it look like you do think you are Ran Yakumo.

The best way of doing this is to take past experiences of your life, preferably not made up, and see how easily they relate to how Ran Yakumo would have done things. Take some of the better matches in those scenarios, and post them as evidence to why you're certain you're an incarnation of Ran.

It might do better to also work on your life as a human, and your referencing as such. It's alright to continue considering your human form as merely a vessel, but it might be best to slowly tone down on that as you spend time on these sites. The fact that you came on so strongly on the matter makes it look like you have no idea how Otakukin or Otherkin actually act, or should act.

Finally, you should probably remove non-sense like anything involving direct contact with fictional characters. If someone brings up the Yukari visiting part again, it would probably be best to find another human and place that human in her role (a mother would be the best bet here). Otherwise you risk sounding like you made this story up.

Good luck with this.
Title: Re: The SANDY YAKUMO Studies
Post by: Jana on January 10, 2010, 02:14:58 AM
Zakeri said a lot of what I didn't manage to articulate in my rush last time. From a psychological standpoint, you'd have to be certifiably insane to believe that you made physical contact with characters like Yukari and Chen in this lifetime, so saying you've done so makes you stand out among the rest. Arguments about whether the rest of the Otherkin count as insane or not aside, it'd be a lot safer to tone it down to "dream contact" or something similar to what Zakeri suggested.

Anyway, your current story would be like someone saying that they ran through a meadow and rolled around in the snow with their fellow wolves, rather than feeling as one would. From a past case study I read up on, Otherkin don't normally make claims like that; they feel the connection to their "true selves" and think that their soul is of that other thing, but not their human body, like a vessel (as Zakeri also mentioned). If you downplay your Ran aspects for your human aspects and explore how "you" came to the conclusion of "I am Ran Yakumo," it'd be a lot more believable for everyone involved. You've already introduced yourself, so make it a bit more of a gradual change instead of a 180.

By the way, Mode, I rather like your new avatar/username/title/personal text combo. Rhyth('s grind stat in JSRF)~<3

Damn. That didn't take long. Its a shame the great advice above hadn't come earlier, or this really might have worked.

At this point, if you wanted to try again, it'd be drastically harder; you'd have to use a proxy and remember to keep it on all the time, pick a new character (and anything touhou would be suspicious, unfortunately, while anything else would be defeating the purpose of why you wanted to do ths)

This is a group of people that are widely open troll attacks. Otherkin have become a sort of Warrior race of the internet now thanks to that, and with how Sandy Yakumo is portraying herself, it's not really too much to assume she's just a troll. further argument on this subject would just be a "Who shot first?" sort of deal.

Not really, because you again run the risk of cross-membership. The only real chance mode has is to salvage Sandy, and it will take a lot of work and hammering out to do that.

Now that I think about it, it'd be really disturbing to think someone with a backstory like Sandy's would actually believe it's the truth. You know you're doing something wrong when you're too nucking futs to join these people.

Also, They're preparing for a seige of Trolls from another source on that website, so they probably will have their guard up for a while. Luckily, they don't think it's coming from MoTK, so if someone else wants to continue the experiment at a later date, it might be possible.

@Bananamatic: Yes, it is rather complicated. This is something that the otherkin spends many of their days thinking about - how their soul feels, and looks like, and how deep their affinity is with a certain creature or creatures. Anyone who walks in shouting "I'm Ran Yakumo From Gensokyo" Automatically looks like a clown at a mime convention. More then enough work needs to be put into your accident (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MiningAccidentOnTroy)* if you plan on being successful with this.

Shut up, we are talking about weirdos, and how Mode is going to infiltrate their ranks. We need not worry about silly grammar errors.

Oh well, too bad it had to turn out this way. >:

Now, what is there to do other than pick Sandy up from the ground? Evolve her, of course.

Armed with Zakeri and Jan's words, I can only formulate the Sandy 2.0.

A name change, a backstory change, etc. However, I'm not going to let this fall just yet. Unexperienced, I rushed in, guns ablazin'. Got shot down within a day. Still, this isn't the end for me just yet.

I'll find out how their minds work. First, however, I'm going to speak again with Tenshi about our LJ idea before I completely discard my little nutcase.

Also, AHAHAHAHA:

Somehow I can't shake the feeling that pretending to be the reincarnation of some bishonen might actually get her accepted pretty easily in the right communities (>_<)

Ah, but what about a man claiming to be the reincarnation of a moon princess?
You know, I didn't even think about the cases where the 'reborn' person might have a different gender than their 'reincarnated soul'. Now I'm scared....

Also, just a thought I had right now, maybe it can give Mode some ideas for her next try:
This time you went in claiming to know all the details about your 'soul' (I'll just use this word for now to refer to the 'reincarnated person', okay?), and that got you attacked easily.
Now I was thinking, what if you went in as someone who has dreams/ visions/ etc., but can't make anything out of it and now wants to ask people for help that are in a similar situation, so that in the end THEY will be the ones to make you an otakukin.
So, for Sandy she might have described those scenes from Gensokyo she saw, but since she doesn't know Touhou or anything similar she couldn't make sense of it. Now if people try to help her they inevitably have to come to the conclusion that her 'soul' is Ran. Now it would be a lot harder to dismiss someone as a troll whom you helped to find their 'soul', right?

As another example, let's say I barged in somewhere saying 'I'm Jack the Ripper', that would easily ge me dismissed as troll. But let's say I came in and said 'I'm having dreams of killing people. I'm scared, help me'. That might get someone interested, so I continue to tell the details of the dreams. How they can't be in modern times, what the clothes of people look like and so on. If all goes well, the end result would be someone screaming 'Oh my god, there is no other possibility, you've got the soul of Jack the Ripper'. Dunno if I'm just being too optimistic here, but that's how I can imagine it.

Ah, and there I go writing walls again. That always happens once I get curious about something (x_x)

I'd probably end up as one of the people defending them from any overt hatespeak or griefing. Though if they are obnoxious about it, that's a different and acceptable reason to get on their case.

I ain't gonna lie. I'd probably laugh my ass off and troll 'em a bit, unless someone beat me to it and went overboard on it. But depending on how they take it, things could go just about any direction.

Well this was unfortunate. I second the notion that you should lead the community to the conclusion. Drop clues in the form of your dreams, how you respond emotionally to certain situations, etc., until the forum itself arrives at the reason. It's playing the long game, but has better chances of sticking.

Oh man, I just got a flashback to when an Otherkin showed up at this forum I used to go to. He was a total ass about it, saying how we were all "lowly humans" and how we should have all accepted him for who he is.

I think he got banned in like a day or something :(
Title: Re: The SANDY YAKUMO Studies

I think the entire otherkin concept was created by people tired of being "lowly humans". You read about fantastic, magical creatures, relate to them emotionally, love them so hard ... and then look at your dull suburban bedroom. It's understandable to wish you were something other than you are. I kinda sympathize.

But seriously, vampires can all suck sparkles out of my butt.
