Title: Recommended Doujins?
Post by: lumber_of_the_beast on December 22, 2009, 02:58:33 AM
So, I have recently found myself in possession of an immense amount of free time, and have decided that I would like to spend at least some of it reading various Touhou doujins. But, seeing as I'm still rather new to the community, I figured it'd pay to ask first. Although I can only read translated ones, specific genre isn't a problem; I like just about everything. Comedy, slice-of-life, action, drama, horror, parody, romance
, pornography
...

So, what would you guys recommend?

Once you're done with Life of Maid, I suggest Asatsuki Dou's works (particularly Scarlet Devil and Working at the SDM), for rehabilitating takes on certain lower level characters, and FLIPFLOPs for more slice-of-life-ish stuff.

I also particularly recommend Red Sky of Japonesia from Sayakata Tea Mansion.

Everything by Ennui Akadako. Their stuff is hilarious. Dioxin is fine too if you can laugh after having a joke explained to you (Japanese puns galore).

Also, Sleepless Banquet of the Eastern Country (Romance-ish). Because Yuu Kamiya (Pixel Phantom)'s art is really pretty. Or maybe that's just me.

While I agree that it's pretty good, is that seriously how it's been translated? "Life of Maid"? Why not something LESS Engrishy? Something like "A Maid's Days" or "A Maid's Daily Life" is so much better.

Dioxin is pretty good, but yeah, the jokes take a lot of explaination if you don't know Japanese. One of my personal favorites is tegakihuni or just huni (funi?) His comics are really silly, but I like them. Also bkub, bkub, bkub.

Drake, which are which?  I generally prefer category 1, and avoid 3 like the plague.  Just, I dunno, line breaks between them will do, or something.

Wi-Z Garage
That reminds me, has any more of '30' been translated up to now? I've only seen the first part in English. (For those that don't know it, '30' is a Touhou parody of '300')

Personal Color has several nifty doujins... well, everything are nifty, actually >w< namely:

... and lots more.

Sapuri, for having one of the most adorablest art styles~<3. Do check if you want to have diabetes immediately.

P->MA (http://www.solelo.com/blog/index.php/2009/08/touhou-doujin-p-ma/)

And CHRONOLOG. Can't miss that >w< only two doujins though (in Gensokyo Archive torrent (http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=torrentinfo&tid=79320) as well)
Sleepless Banquet of the Eastern Country (http://www.freewebs.com/aortic/touhou.htm#124523663) (which jigglyppuff8 mentioned already, but mine's referring to the Yuyuko&Youmu one)
A Deep, Deep Puddle (http://www.gensokyo.org/archives/564)

EDIT: Ack! Almost forgot: Clash House (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Clash_House) >w<. Several are shorts and archived in Gensokyo torrent (http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=torrentinfo&tid=79320) already. He's also the official illustrator of SaBND (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/SaBND) ~<3

Edit2:... but I couldn't just read Touhou doujins without a punching bag a scratch post YoungestSis reading beside me~ ;_;... Apparently, she's occupied with drawing her original stuff in her free time...

I love their stuff, although only three of them has been translated.

I'm just mentioning this because it's the first group I've read from, and god I love them so much.

Also, Scarlet & Scarlet.

I have about 1/3 of part 2 translated as of now. I got a little derailed by the latest Miko Miko Suika edits (plus RL work/study), but I'm back on it already.

Oh, and if you like slice-of-life style, and  the ocasional deep storyline, I can't recommend Mizutataki (aka Water Cushion) enough.

Wait, so you're doing the translation?
*Looks at credits of the first part...*
Oh my, I didn't see that before. Thanks for doing that translation. I look forward to the next part.

Does the artist: 'Shino (Ponjiyuusu) on Danbooru have a full name or is this his artist name. Because he makes good stuff as well. Also not to forget Morino Hon.

Is there any good ones with either Momiji or Reimu x Yukari?

If you are looking for Yukareimu you can find a fair amount of both Personal Colour's and Iyokan's works on this pairing over at Wings Of Yuri's archive.

http://www.solelo.com/blog/index.php/download/

As for general recommendations, anything by Iyokan is good. I have yet to read anything bad by them. People have already mentioned "Though the Wind Cries", and I'd like to agree. It's superb.

My impression of Personal Colour is a bit mixed, but at their best they really are great. "Three by this side, Two by the Other Side" is arguably their best, it's a beautiful drama.

Mizutataki, more known as Water Cushion in the English speaking community, is a circle I'd like to mention. My favorite by them is "Shining Gensokyo".

Another Circle I like is "I Can't Fix the Tactical Helmet, Sir!". I especially enjoyed their two-part Mary and Renko centered doujinshi, "False Bamboo Sprout in the Miso Soup" and "False Nipponia Nippon in the Miso Soup".

Touhou Mahoudan (http://thmahoudan.smackjeeves.com/)

It's a slice-of-life webcomic, mostly about Utsuho and her backstory.
