I've noticed that some Touhou games appeal to my personality more than others do, regardless of how well or poorly I play them, or even how much I like them.
So what Touhou game best matches your personality, if you're honest with yourself? And why?
It might not be a game you're particularly good at, or even your favorite in the series - just the game that best matches the kind of person you are. By contrast, which game is most unlike you, and why?
-
For me, Imperishable Night is most like me, even if MoF is my favorite. I'm a night person, and Eirin's efforts to help her friend is something I would do. IaMP is most unlike me, even though I find it fun. I'm just not the kinda guy who enjoys physical fights.
-
Subterranean Animism. Because Utsuho's attitude to having superpowers is the best attitude.
Don't have a not-me game really.
-
HRtP: I like the controls for the game, the game also exercises anticipation about where the orb is going and where you want it to go, while avoiding bullets and trying to chain the tiles; I like the trip towards Sariel (it feels a bit desolate at the mid of the game, with only yourself to get through these levels), and like the Konngara fight too.
SoEW: stage 2 makes me think of a trip through a forest in an afternoon, having to defend yourself against the youkai there. The bgm fits well with this idea in mind, I think. Stage 3 feels like a calm trip in the night, with an even better bgm (perhaps my favorite stage theme from SoEW). Stage 4 feels faster-paced, since the scenery is moving fast and you fight that mid-boss along with it. Then finally, Stage 5 and its bgm feels dramatic, like you're nearing the conclusion of the game. I like the themes of night, a darkened room and space present there, but I think that they could have some improvement, like.. making the stage a bit more complex/fun so that it becomes remarkable. Mima, as a boss, isn't challenging enough, she has improved versions of Marisa's attacks besides her own attacks, yet Marisa's equally difficult (imho). That's quite a high price to pay for being the first final boss in a Touhou shmup.
PoDD: the stages look similar, so I won't comment on them.. I liked most of the characters' gameplay and themes, and liked the last two stages as well, and the humorous tone of the game.
LLS: the last three stages are surreal, as expected from Yuka's dream land. Yuka herself can be compared to a slightly twisted version of the Sleeping Beauty (Sleeping Terror, anyone?), and the final stage has similar characteristics than the ones I mentioned in SoEW, except the dramatic feeling. Yet, you feel that you're nearing the game's end, and approaching the source and end of the dream land. (I still remember the final 3 bullet spawners, and the fact that the last powerup can be used to clear their final wave :D)
MS: Stage 2 is a nice opportunity to feature a space-like travel theme, and a change in the game's pace. Stage 3 is dream-like, like LLS's last stages are, since it has Alice as its stage boss, stage 4 doesn't manage to give me a sense of travel in a snow field, stage 5 feels desolate and slow-paced (though the barrages are dense, there), a thing that I liked on that stage. Stage 6 also didn't manage to give me the feeling that the fight against Shinki is transforming the environment around her and the player, though Shinki herself changes forms and intensifies her attacks.
as for the Windows series, I can't remember consistently about remarkable sections, so I'll try..
- EoSD stage 2
- EoSD's fight against Remilia
- PCB's title bgm (gets you in the game's wintery setting)
- PCB's first stage
- PCB's fight against Chen (with her bgm, you forget about the city below you and pay attention to her and her patterns)
- PCB's stage 4 (I liked the trip more than the boss fight)
- PCB's fight against Youmu (liked the slowdown gimmick)
- PCB's Extra/Phantasm stage and bosses
- IN's stages in general (the setting, not the stages themselves except for stages 3, 4 and 6A/6B)
- IN's Extra Stage
- PoFV's Medicine/Aya stages, since these are the better stages to score in (I think), so I have to keep focused in them, keep control of the game and seek to chain chain chain chain chain chain (Makkusu Chain!)
- MoF's stages except for stage 5 (the patterns were unfun/uncreative, I think, even though I enjoyed spending bombs to eat bullets)
- MoF's fight against Kanako (and stage 6)
- SA's stages (I think I liked stage 5's setting the least, but it's okay as a connection between stages 4 and 6)
- UFO's stages (more due to the enemy formations and attacks than the setting, though stages 3, 5 and 6 manage to stand out in that aspect)
- UFO's fight against Byakuren (and stage 6 as well)
I like fighting games in general as much as I like shmups, because of the things they exercise. Getting better in such games make you explore their potential more, and then you further exercise yourself and have more fun :D
If I were to say about "my game", or "the game that's most unlike me", I would choose (for the games that appeal me the most) games/genres/series that I enjoy for some reason (for the things they exercise, for example, how they play and what they allow you to do, or for the setting, mood, storytelling, etc.), and those that I avoid (note that this is very subjective. For example, I dislike X-Men vs. Street Fighter, because I don't want to exercise my abilities at performing relatively easy infinite combos on others, and try to not get myself comboed in such manner. Not to mention that I'm VERY GOOD at performing combos, to the point that I rely more on things that can compensate for my lack of ability in performing them.. -- just a note, I *should* try to improve in that aspect, in order to get the most out of each attack opportunity in other games, but if it's easier to work on something else, before I'm forced -- by good enough opponents -- to work on improving my execution in general, I'll take that path instead)
-
Hmm...
I think I'll go with Lotus Land Story for this one. I'm very much a dreamer, always thinking up grand fantasies and "What If" stories, wishing my life could be more fantastic.
I'm also a lot like Elly. When you've earned my trust and friendship, I'll do my very best to help you and have your back.
-
UFO.
there's always so much going on in that game, kind of like what goes on in my head.
-
I really don't know. I can defined with two games I guess..
IaMP, as I like to party a lot, and am a fighter.
SA, as I like dark, damp underground. Enclosed areas feels comfortable.
-
SA, mostly cause I feel like a combination of Parsee, Satori, and Koishi.
I'm constantly jealous of the people around me, everyone usually ignores me, and when they don't, I'm usually treated badly.
-
SoEW because I'm full of bullshit
-
PCB, MoF and SA. All of them feature this whole "into the unknown" feeling (though, it's not that strong for MoF), what I really, really like. But I like SA more by being underground, by having great music, and also having the Underground Village, what reminds me an old trip of mine in Transylvania when we went to an unused Salt Mine, where they kinda built an underground village/museum in it.
-
SA, mostly cause I feel like a combination of Parsee, Satori, and Koishi.
...
...Can I have you?
-
^lulz
In any case though I can say that UFO suits me best, first of all it's the first one I 1CCed in Hard and Lunatic. The scenario describes more of the heroines curiosity on the unknown. Curiosity is what drove mankind to what it is today (imo).
-
SA, mostly cause I feel like a combination of Parsee, Satori, and Koishi.
Yuuka is a combination of Parsee, Satori, and Koishi!?
-
EoSD brings a smile to my face the most still for some reason.
PCB is the best IMO. The music, the atmosphere, the "ooh pretty" factor in the bullet patterns.
I'm a total nighthawk too, which is why I'm normally logging off at around 2am (and then I'm up for another hour normally), so if that's considered "like me", I guess IN is.
Really though, flying around shooting danmaku at magical girls and fairies is not very like me at all. I can't honestly see how any of the Touhou games are lime me at all. Though maybe PCB again, if only because upon discovering Touhou, all the cherry blossom trees on my block (which were the only cherry blossom trees in the whole damn city as far as I know too) were gone.
I asked my landlord later on, and he said they were taken away because their roots were interfering with the growth of the other trees (ordinary trees like everywhere else in the city, less of them than there were cherry blossom trees on my block too I might add). WHAT THE FUCK. Idiots. Seriously, you have no idea how cool it is having pink petals raining around with a pink ground and shit. I mean I'm not a pink freak, but good lord does it make you feel like life is a fairy tale when it's like that.... *smacks desk*.
Alas, since I'm not a flying danmaku machine, I was not able to save them, they're gone *wails*.
-
I got two letters:
IN
Because it is simply the best 'overal' touhou windows game imo.
-
...
...Can I have you?
Sorry, already taken~ =w=

Lotus Land Story. What I say often doesn't make sense (the plot was because Yuka was BORED?), various people believe I am dumb when I'm really not (>:( PC-98 h8ers), I have a love of nostalgic things (half the music in LLS makes me feel as though I've heard them a long time ago), and I'm never outwardly serious, until I suddenly am and people are all like "WTF."
-
SA and IN, because i'm like a combination of satori, yukari, and alice. With patchouli crystal orbitting in my head.
And, i hate to admit it, but when i'm in a good mood i'm all koishi. Gloomy power of love, alright.
That ingame dialogue is excellent, isn't it?
-
um...the Touhou games goes so mush with me; one of the things who like me from the games are the colors and the patterns, like mandalas, and the fantasy who surround the story.
HRtP: the draws in the background, the style of the game, the bosses, the mysterious music...difficult and fun.
SoEW: is slow, but that backgrounds...so psychedelic i love it.
PoDD: this game have excellent ost. and no forget the ghosts, hearts, stars with cute eyes XD
LLS: fight against Yuka. if you win, you can feel great because was incredible XD (and good ost too)
MS: The epic duel against Shinki put this game in my heart n_n...lots of good moments and colorful, sometimes confuse backgrounds.
in general, i like the PC 98 Touhou psychedelic backgrounds
EoSD and their colorful bullets. The moving backgrounds, the music oh god that music.
PCB is one of my most loved because i love the cherry blossoms and the misery about the death and the life, the nirvana, the samurai code, the spring and all the meanings of that, etc. Is a poetic game, and the music is so moving.
IN is another thing who touch my heart because im cancerian, i love moon themes, and all in that game surround the things who are related with the night and the moon. Is like a great adventure...the music goes well, like a suite!
IaMP is a fight game and is a genre who i enjoy so much. Suika is the only final boss in this kind of games who is impossible be anger with her: she looks happy,is drunk, but the song for a strange reason make feel me melancholic and i remember who she make all that (unite all the people in parties without end) for found another onis and no be so alone in the exterior...and is so difficult, who end all the game is epic. The music (the ZUN ones specially) are so good.
PoFV is another game who is poetic, with beautiful backgrounds, who i remember. You can play with charas who maybe no will appear again playable in another of this kind, and the music, very good. funny, no so difficult, but you can play with a friend!
StB is impossible for me...but the idea is interesting...want know who i like of this game? the begin...the presentation, the sounds of this game for some reason i like it, i found it elegant (love the effect of "old movie") god music, obviously.
MoF have some of the best backgrounds, ever. specially the stage 3; if is possible make a screen-saver with the only the background moving, i want. Combi the brilliant colors of the first Touhou games and the PC technology, and you have this. This game go in crescendo; begin with little things, and you end fight against goddess. Wonderful music!
SA is one of my faborites because the surprise factor of the last boss was wow. excellent music; for first time, the underground (who we can imagined darky) is colorful! beautiful bullets and patterns, sometimes complicated (ah!) and very interesting bosses...
Scarlet Weather: i like it because lot of technical, little details motives. Have his own story themes; when you end a fight, you fades immediately to another one; lots of new opponents; better remixes of the old games than IaMP, and expectacular final bosses songs. The new final bosses are hard, Iku and Tenchi looks pretty but Tenchi is violent and have a final spell card who remember me Sariel XD
UFO well, is made of surprises; lovable bosses; music so diverse; you begin figthing with a little mouse and end against a kind of nun-saint-of the youkai with her own good motives but so confused, and a "monster" without defined form; etc.
Touhou 12.3 is lol (i want play it XD)
-
IN. Just because it's Touhou 8, it has 8 playable characters, Eiyashou, Eintei, and 8 different stages (if you count stage 4 uncanny and powerful as one stage and stage 6A and 6B as seperate).
-
Personally, I'm a 12.3 man. My least favourite would happen to be IaMP.
-
UFO. If a group of people that I weren't particularly close to were working on something and I had the power to screw with them, believe me, I would. And if it turned out that the 'something' was potentially to my benefit as well, I'd apologise (in)sincerely and then I'd try to cash in on it.
Wait, I think I've just summarised why I like Nue. Oh well. For what it's worth I prefer sky stages to ground ones.
-
SA probably suits me best, because I like being in dark/secluded areas.
Thats the best i can do really. Apart from that i have no idea what Touhou game suits me best
-
StB, because it's really a puzzle game, and I like puzzles. :)
Surprisingly, UNL comes second, because I like being able to just start up the game and thrash around without worrying about a clear.
"OH man I just got blasted across the screen! I've gotta press the X button really fast now- oh no- oh man, now there's a spell card, I've gots to dash into the air really fast no- oh man, I died again, that's pretty great, let's break out the C buttons!"
-
Subterranean Animism.
I like to overcomplicate things :3
-
I like MoF. It's down-to-earth: the only game that doesn't involve some sort of dimensional-space-time hax.
Also it's easy :P
-
SWR- I'm similar to Tenshi; I do whatever I can to avoid boredom and I'm a masochist.
-
IaMP- They call me Light Sign「Brilliant Jade」cuz I'm DOWN-RIGHT-FIERCE! (http://dustloop.com/forums/images/smilies/custom/vbang.gif)
-
Being also my favourite of the official Touhou games, I believe that PoFV reflects myself the best. Like the computer-controlled opponents in that game I'm largely incapable of keeping a solid level of gameplay - some days I spy everything on the screen with near perfect clarity while during others I'm little more than a klutz.
-
I would expect to say PoFV because Shikieiki, or PoDD because Yumemi, but being honest with myself, I'm going to answer StB. Because even though I don't have the skill or the talent to beat the stages easily, if I keep going at it with my eyes open and my camera ready to take a shot, and keep enduring, I will eventually beat the stage and get some really awesome photos while I'm at it.
To be fair, it helps that I'm a photographer and I like Aya a lot. But I still think StB is the game that best reflects my own ideals of enduring the pain and being rewarded for the effort.
-
Two stand out.
PCB, because of Youmu's presence, because it's the one game I had the most fun with in 1CCing it, and because of the OST. I mainly get the feel of games with the feel of their music.
Also, IN, mostly because the night and the moon are two things that appeal to me. Let's not mention again the OST, of course.
-
I want to say EoSD, because that was my first, but...
I'd have to say Imperishable Night, because... I honestly don't know why, really. I think it's the slightly offbeat enemies (moreso than other games, IMHO), and... well...
I just like it. ^__^
-
I think that UFO represents me the best.
Byakuren is kind of like me in a way that she fought for what she believed in but was torn down because others opposed her thinking.
Rock on Youkai Jesus! :dragonforce:
-
I can only really vouch for three of the games, but I'd say SA. I'm a scientist at heart, always ready to learn about or experiment with things, and most of SA's bullet patterns can be figured out, in some fashion, through this same trial and error process. Plus Utsuho is one of the few Touhou characters with a general theme (nuclear fusion) that can be called "scientific", so she gets my attention more than the average cast member.
