A vertical shooter like the coin ops from the 80s and 90s. Instead of playing as an airplane or space ship, you play as one of two spell casters. They each have their own enchanting story with a bit of comedy thrown in. Among the various stages are a host of colorful characters the player meets along their journey. The biggest difference in this vertical shooter is that it includes a versus mode with a variety of spell attacks used to blast enemies out of the sky.
Except for the number of characters that could be a description of PoFV :V

PoFV and PoDD were based on Twinkle Star Sprites, do remember, but I really doubt this guy even knows what the game is, considering how Touhoucentric it is.

he did say a few comment pages back that he knew it wasn't a 100% original idea. After that all the comments were saying how similar to touhou it sounds. A little before it too. Weather he knew about touhou beforehand is the question i guess but it basically sounds like a typical one player touhou game with 2 player capabilities. like combining IN with PoFV.
I've no xbox anyway so i'm not even considering it but still....well that's all i got really i'm not really interested in games nowadays unless it is touhou haha.

There really isn't a problem with borrowing concepts from other shmups, since both official and doujin games do it all the time.
This, however, is so thinly-veiled it's practically transparent.

It would be nice to see more SHMUPS in the west, but... Even if the guy later admits to this not being completely original, both he - as well as the judges - treated it as such, and that does upset me.
It would've been funny if the similarities to Touhou (or Twinkle Star Sprites, as mentioned in some earlier post) were noticed and pointed out by one of the judges.

I get the part in not completely original. But "not completely original" and "completely not original" makes a lot of difference. Gameplay-wise that is.
That site is starting a few things right now as I post:
-Sending e-mails to judges or something along the lines of that
-A recommendation to get this idea to 2ch.
-Doing a combined vote.
-Massive rant posts on that site and the comments below video.
-A couple of people (only 2-3) calling to people to calm down and saying Touhou isn't completely original in the first place.
You can always go there and see for yourself. But if you want arguments posted here please ask.

ZUN might not have created the ideas, but the games that did could up with them don't have the rapid fan base touhou does. I don't think anyone went, "Omg PoDD is a rip off of Twinkle Star Sprites" when they came out.

I actually look forward to skies ablaze because we need a multiplayer shmup, and this can potentially bring the danmaku genre to the west. Sadly, people are too busy raging before even gameplay.
Haven't they wondered why Touhou has remained Doujin? Zun doesn't want to deal with all this originality crap. Even his songs aren't the most original, as he borrowed from many nes games and pop songs.
And focusing has been here since loooong ago. It's a shmup staple in games like Mushihimesama.

In all honesty, I want The Artifact to win more than this. The guy behind the idea of The Artifact has true passion!!
However, that said, I want this to win 2nd place. Probably won't be likely. Thankfully, I managed to stop the DS invasion and make them realize some of them were acting like retards at least :P

Uh, no. There are a few reasons why he hasn't gone commercial with the games, but that isn't one of them.
ZUN himself has said that shmups, official and doujin, borrow concepts from each other all the time, and people are OK with it. It's not considered stealing, it's considered respect.
However, in THIS case, this guy is basically hinging on the Touhou series' relative obscurity and trying to adapt it for Western audiences, despite the faux-anime style artwork. It's a blatant rip-off to anyone familiar with the series. Sure, this could be seen as "respect", but since it's Touhou with a new coat of paint, he's borrowing so much at once that it just seems lazy more than anything.

Putting aside the issue of blatant stealing and not just simply borrowing elements like all games inevitable do, I'm having trouble feeling any sort of enthusiasm from the dude. I had more issues just trying to pay attention to him than noticing the similarities. Sure he was nervous, but so was The Artifact dude but he was a lot more confident and passionate... maybe too passionate. [validate your existence? okay...] Overall, the guy just seemed like a very awkward individual. And then the video with the judges, I just couldn't get through that video because it was so painful trying to listen to the guy.
I suppose this will be a valuable learning experience to all involved.

Yeah the guy does have a pretty sleep inducing voice.

I thought all vs shooters counted hits. And I notice a couple of differences.
For one, you have a healthbar instead of hitpoints.
Two is that enemies are actually fighting you, from what I understand.
Three is that there is no Engrish warning dialogue.
Four is that it's just a cuttin. Big deal.
And I also see no spell or spell card counter. For all we know, he could make a totally new mechanic to powering up your spells.
I will admit the attack going to your side of the field is like Sakuya's, but I recall twinkle Star Sprites also had something similar.
Again, wait until official gameplay before bashing it.

Btw the healthbar is divided into five. And the one on the right-hand screen shows 3.5, though this seems to be irrelevant :V

So...how else do you propose making the interface for a 2P shmup? Besides the obvious splitscreen, the only two similarities they have in interface are:
1. A number at the top of the screen (presumably counting score)
2. A gauge at the bottom of the screen (presumably counting charge)
BOTH of which are present in exactly the same place as these other 2P shmup examples.
By the way, I'm pretty sure these winged things aren't enemies, but familiars. He seemed to mention that familiars are a part of the game's mechanics.
(These two games, by the way, are 稀翁玉 and Twinkle Star Sprites respectively)

I'm kind of on the fence about whether or not to consider this a blatant PoFV ripoff. One one hand it seems like, yes, he is hoping that Touhou is obscure enough in the west that no one will notice it. But at the same time, shooters in general all have similarities to each other. You can only do so much with "hold z to shoot up," after all.
Besides, it's not like PoFV/PoD.D were even that original in the first place, given Twinkle Star Sprites :V

2. A gauge at the bottom of the screen (presumably counting charge)

I think this really highlights one of the key issues that holds back the development of the Western doujin scene: an obsession with individuality and the myth of the "Absolute Artist" from whose mind alone creative works spring forth. This is a myth...in reality, creating art is a communal process. Every creative work is a response to the body of work which preceded it. By taking previously existing forms and building upon them, bit by bit, we come closer to an ideal work which better represents our communal concepts and desires. It is a corruption of art to make it a pursuit of personal glory and "unique"-ness, as common as this corruption is in our corners of Internet culture.
We can see many manifestations of this individuality obsession in Western doujin culture, from the preponderance of self-insert characters, to the constant parroting of "rip-off!" "ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL" is a meme, but like many memes, it represents a basic social fact: that our Western society idolizes and romanticizes a sacred "artistic originality" which is more golden idol than concrete reality.

Remember, it's not a good idea to speculate too heavily based on screenshots alone, especially mock-up pencil screenshots of something that doesn't even exist yet and is only in the planning stage.

By then it'll be too late. You probably won't be able to stop the release by then. Prevention is better than cure. Make a choice, support it or don't.
I arguing here 'cause the debate's just started. Also, I'm still sore about the about the interface looking nearly identical to PoFV.
The games that were mentioned might play the same, but at least they have an interface largely unique on their own. That drawn screenshot however looks far too identical to PoFV. While copying gameplay concepts is nothing new these days, (Hollywood, the gaming industry in the west), copying the screen is more of a ripoff rather than a homage.
E.g. Hollow World of God.
While screenshots look largely similar to MoF, at least you can see something called "Money". At least the screenshots show completely different attack patterns from Touhou itself. At least it mentioned Touhou or something that can be traced back to Japan.

Indeed it is. But it's actually a bit different from PoFV and such. Remember all that graze-obsessed mechanics and the super speed remorseless, merciless bullets.
Oh, and Yuka is featured in that game. I like crossovers like that. Or think about the Samidare pilots entering Gensokyo or being featured in Rayging Blues.

Indeed it is. But it's actually a bit different from PoFV and such. Remember all that graze-obsessed mechanics and the super speed remorseless, merciless bullets.
Oh, and Yuka is featured in that game. I like crossovers like that. Or think about the Samidare pilots entering Gensokyo or being featured in Rayging Blues.

I mentioned this to Ghaleon too (a C77 topic) and, nope, couldn't contact postman (also known as shmupnut) but I fear little in terms of games will be released. Mostly trials and few full versions. The gold mine was between C72-C74. C75 showed a considerable shortage and C76 was plain awful on the game side. Big highlights are Alternative Sphere and eXceed 3rd Black Package... and not much else =/
I'll try to contact him and see if we can coordinate something.

So yeah, it's over, the "Western touhou fanbase" is a large sea of ignorance which will passionately mobilize against anything that remotely resembles the creation of something productive.
I don't want to ramble on at length here...I don't know why it affects me so much. I guess it's because I've mostly spent last year building up my Anime DVD and Blu-ray collection, haven't had the budget to import Undefined Fantastic Object or the SWR expansion, and thus have sort of been away from Touhou stuff until returning now. And a rather depressing scene greets me.

Danmaku games are danmaku games...there are only so many bullet patterns that exist, there are bound to be repetitions across games. What's the similarity, just the fact they have spinning bullets or something? If you could show me the specific screenshot of the Wriggle pattern you're referencing, it'd likely to be find hundreds of other examples of similar patterns in other STG games.

I think we have already established this. It easy to take things from other series that don't have a rabid fan bases. Its harder to use things from lets say Starwars which is always notorious for taking things from culture.

This has gotten out of hand.
I haven't been here for almost a week so I didn't even know this was happening. Admittedly, I had to laugh at the whole thing. People will believe what they will. I appreciate the few of you that are trying to quell the mob, and have an actual understanding on how things work. I feel trying to explain myself would only bring out more trolling and bigotry, so I will refrain from fueling the fire. Just let it be. I will say a couple things though. Twinkle Star Sprites?, not Touhou? 9, was the original inspiration for the versus mode as I had that game on Dreamcast?. I did not trace anything. I was not even looking at screenshots of the games when I was sketching. The connection some of you made with a screenshot is purely coincidental. I have played these games, and maybe that was something that stuck out in my mind. There really is not an infinite number of ways line patterns can be made. It was just something somewhat simple to get a general idea. Again, believe what you will. Pretty sure this post will start more crap anyway.
