I tend to find that, in a lot of cases, characters that can seriously kick my butt also happen to be really high on my list of favorite characters. This is far from consistent, I actively dislike Reimu, Sanae, and Kanako, and many Extra bosses are fairly "meh" apart from Mokou. Not especially fond of the Moriyas either... However, Patchy, Sakuya, Remi, Alice, Youmu, Yuyuko, Marisa, Momiji, (Might as well include her :V) Orin, Utsuho, and Byakuren all seem really freaking awesome to me. To a somewhat lesser extent, Chen as well <_< >_>
Who else tends to find that some of the bosses that they really have trouble with also happen to be characters that they really like?

Absolutely. Bosses which are obscenely hard for me are definately high on my list. There are some characters that I like alot which aren't really hard for me (flandre and yuyuko are the top 2 for me...They're harder than most Touhou bosses sure. But really easy compared to extra bosses and final stage bosses IMO).
If Patchy wasn't so ridiculously hard for a stage for 4 boss for me, I'd probably like Remilia/Flandre more. But...Well, she's the most disproportionately wtfhard boss for her stage in the series for me. Orin is probably the runner up. There's just some kind of "Badass" appeal I guess. I don't know.
-
Eh it's somewhat to same with me.
Shinki became my favorite because she was my first final boss, I really got into the fight and I still hold her in high regards for giving me such a challenge.
This hasn't happened in a while now though. Alot of the other characters I tend like out of personal opinion rather than how they can kick my ass in danmaku. That said, I'm apathetic to a good number of the cast (save for PC98 and a few windows characters which include; Keine, Nitori, Yamame, and recently Nazrin), and downright hate one (Marisa) with every fiber of my being.
-
Kind of. If it's a fun fight where it's difficult but not frustrating, then that pretty much automatically makes them one of my favorites.
But, the character's theme and dialogue influence me more.
-
Y'know, I almost have the opposite problem. Suwako stands out as my favorite character, and she's also the only Extra boss i've ever beaten. Flandre, Mokou, and Nue are also high up, but i've had much more trouble with them.

^ Like Fightest said x3
Yasaka-sama is one notable character I loved being, uhh, strong and kinda hard to danmaku-tame myself on.
... Doesn't seem to apply to Satori or Murasa yet, though, as I haven't gone through them yet.
Not on the case of Patchouli (bookworm/anemic lover, etc.), Marisa (witch fetish since Witch of PuyoPuyo), Yuyuko-sama & Youmu (yuri doujin by CHRONOLOG, also first ever Touhou doujin I read), and Aya (anime-liking influence of my YoungestSis, and Tengukami :V).
-
I find Utsuho easy (easier than other Stage 6 bosses that is), despite being one of my favourite characters. Sikeiki on the other hand is just brutal :(
-
Hey I still Koishi to be the hardest EX boss out there and she's my favourite character.
In fact, I STILL haven't beaten her yet because of the fact that:
a) I'm too lazy to do so
b) I don't want to beat her up so <3
-
Yeah i guess this did happen for me. Remilia became my favorite out of spite and anger originally.
When i first got into touhou i played IaMP and she consistently killed me all the dam time. I was just learning how to play and after getting okay with Reimu i decided to try story mode and Remilia seriously kicked my ass. i mean thoroughly. Like you have 3 continues and you lose all 3 against her thoroughly. I thought she was the final boss of the game she was so hard. After giving up on that game i played game 6 cause i wanted to start at the beginnin (didn't know about the first 5 at. thought 6 was the first one) and after getting enough game overs and getting used to what touhou is i finally get to the final boss and....ITS FUCKIN REMILIA!
sure enough serious pwnage happened right after that. her first fricking attack TOTALLY took me by surprise and took a life almost immidiately. Took me a few weeks to beat her.
In the end she became my fave probably because she was "that one boss" always in your face taunting you cause you can't win. And back then I was a freshman in touhou here haha.
Reisen was my fave FIRST though because of Badassness, during the "crusade against remilia" i played the other games and (game 10 was the latest during the time) played IN she had a really good impression on me since her stage theme was really BA and those lunacy eyes and the shifting of bullets made me "WTF?!" i thought she was impossible hahah. so first it was Reisen but in the back of my head i always knew i'd have to face that dam vampire soon and hopefully beat her.
....lol how screwy is fate that i hated her for kicking my ass so much and now she's my absolute fave. oh wait "Manipulation of Fate"....FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!
tl;dr
yeah in the case of touhou the bosses that kicked my ass hard left a good impression on me in the end but at first i'd rage at them it seems.

That power happens to be why I think that she was holding back in EoSD~ Theoretically, control of fate could equal control of reality. Which means that the danmaku equivalent to her power would probably be utterly insane if she actually got ticked off. As in, WAY nastier than anything ZUN would put on a stage 6 boss. Or anywhere. Plus she never used Gungnir there either, so...~
Kind of. If it's a fun fight where it's difficult but not frustrating, then that pretty much automatically makes them one of my favorites.

This seems to be the case for me as well, truth be told. Dialogue happens to be the reason I dislike Reimu, Sanae, and Kanako, and my three favorite characters (Marisa, Remilia, and Byakuren) are tied for top spot, same with their themes.
-
Not so much...I mean, Aya gives me utter hell in any and every appearance she makes, but holy hell do I hate her guts. And then there are people I hate who don't screw me over too much, like Sanae. I also like quite a few characters that don't thrash me, like Mokou and Nitori.

Stockholm Syndrome, anyone? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome)
That was the theory I had running as to why I became a fan of Utsuho so quickly even though it took me significantly longer to beat her than the rest of SA, and why I'm finally starting to warm up to Kanako (who I previously wanted to kill as many times as she killed me)

Doubt it. Similar in a way I suppose but don't think so.
In my case with patchy for example, I never actually game over on her... I just get upset when I have 6 lives or something at her, and I begin stage 5 with like 2 or 3, especially since I need at least 2 lives just for scarlet gensokyo >=P.

Actually, no. >_> I find there's no correlation between difficulty and liking a character, though I did hate Evil Eye Sigma for a long time because of what he did to me...I do find I tend to like characters with fun fights more than those with boring fights though.

Point. :V

Nah, there's no correlation for me. Shou/Byakuren kicked my ass a lot back when I was playing UFO, but I dislike the former and am only slightly above neutral on the latter. Orin's probably next on the list of problematic bosses, yet I like her. Then there's Sikieiki who I also hate.
-
Same for me, although I tend to like characters with unique, clever attack patterns more.
-
oh, that happen with me and Sariel.Even today i can?t defeat "it" for clumsy fingers, for be slow or even bad luck (one time i passed with good lives to his-her 2 transformation....and my PC crashed XD)
-
I prefer characters i either rarely or have never go/gone up against.
Nue, Alice, Marisa, etc. Nue comes from my personal tastes in dark things...
-
Byakuren and Shikieiki have beaten me to tears-- the former while I'm trying to beat her in Hard mode, to the point of having a minor meltdown on IRC (I continuespammed her for FOUR HOURS and saw LFO all of twice), the latter in StB, which made me renounce everything related to Shikieiki until I beat her horrible horrible 10-4.
But if Remilia is any indication, I don't like characters based on how much grief they cause me.
-
I find this happening to me a lot too. Especially near stage 4. Patchy, Lily White, the Prismrivers, Momiji, and Murasa (even though I haven't played UFO yet) are among my favorite characters. Reimu and Marisa just piss me off as does Aya thanks to PoFV. SA is just hell (although Parsee's grown on me). Also, on my first few playthroughs of EoSD when I was just getting into Touhou, I almost always died on Stage 3, so Meiling's another one of my faves.

Only if the boss I am fighting's spellcards are fun rather then just random dodging.
