Title: Braid
Post by: Lopsidation on December 02, 2009, 10:31:05 PM
Braid is a puzzle platformer where your main method of solving puzzles is time manipulation. By pressing the Shift button, you can rewind time back as far as you want and erase any mistakes you've made. This mechanic isn't used as an excuse for ever-so-impossible jumps, though; it's used to provide some of the most ingenious puzzles you've ever seen.

Every world after the first has a new way to manipulate time, starting with some objects that are immune to any time effects. My personal favorite is World 4, in which walking right moves time forward and walking left moves time backward. The last puzzle in that world, Fickle Companion, is particularly brilliant- it features a key that isn't immune to time effects, meaning that you can hold the key when you walk right, but the key follows that exact path backwards when you walk left. Good luck getting the key to where it needs to go.  ;)

By the way, if you're thinking of getting Braid, don't read any spoilers or hints. Actually, scratch that- read this  walkthrough (http://www.braid-game.com/walkthrough/walkthrough.html) before you get the game.

The demo and full game can be found here. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/26800/)

Storywise, Braid is "I'm a creepy stalker: the game"

The story is... strange. Don't spoil anything, though. Wait, does this forum even have spoiler tags?

By the way, has anyone else completed the entire game? As in, The Cloud Bridge is the most difficult level.

No.

I found Braid's story to be confused and somewhat forced. But the gameplay was cool, no doubt about that.

I'm stuck at Death by Movements =/ . Though I must admit ... whoever made this game is pure genius. Come on, Time Manipulation ?

Play the last level in reverse

You mean Movement by Degrees? I love that one, all 3 of its puzzles are very clever.
I'm not going to tell you how to do it, though. Just come back to it later.

Braid's concept was fine but got old quick. I found myself forcing myself to finish the game in the latter half of the game.

Retsupurae is so silly~

Um, what? Directly from the creator: "Every puzzle in Braid is unique. There is no filler." Each world introduces a totally new mechanic, and with it comes new original puzzles. How on earth did this game "get old quick" to you?

Overall, it's OK.  The story is a little bit pretentious, and I had the last level spoiled for me before I played it (grr).  I don't think it lives up to the hype, though.

By the way, has anyone else completed the entire game? As in, The Cloud Bridge is the most difficult level.
Yes.

It was...  sort of worth it.  IIRC I had to set my alarm clock to do it.

I don't remember having that much of a problem with any of the puzzles, with the exception of the very last one.  Had to look up that one's solution.

If Braid has a problem, it's lack of replay value.

Though I really think I might enjoy coming back one day, after I've forgotten the puzzle solutions, and playing through the whole game all over again. The atmosphere is just so warm and beautiful.

Jonathan Blow should really get on making another game.

The Witness (http://the-witness.net/info.html) has already been announced.

I sincerely hope it will not be a point and click adventure game.  But it sure damn sounds like one.
