Title: PC-98 Characters - Who would you want back?
Post by: RainfallYoshi on November 28, 2009, 05:33:57 PM: I know. There's really nothing to say ZUN ever has any intentions of bringing any PC-98 characters back. It's foolish of us to think he ever would. Blah blah blah.

But this is the area for fun and crazy fandom topics so we can dream can't we?

Basically, what characters from the PC-98 days would you want to make a return? I'm sure there's a lot of them that would make for some cool stories in thew windows universe.

My list includes:

Rikako Asakura - Because a scientist that shuns magic running around in Gensokyo couldn't possibly cause any problems right?
Kana Anaberal - Because we don't have nearly enough ghost stories.

((Oh, and in before Mima. XD))

But as a very big PC-98 fan who loves the characters deeply...

Meira, Chiyuri and Yumemi. That's it.

I always felt like Meira had more to say. After SoEW the whole subplot about the yin-yang orbs just disappeared, and personally I'd like to see it come back in a less non-sensical game. As for Chiyuri and Yumemi, they were the most highly developed characters in the games, and they deserve a reappearance.

As for the rest though, there's a reason I like PC-98 in a way I can't like Windows: Because all the characters are a blank slate. The vile claw of fanon hasn't shaped any but the most popular characters into whatever it pleases, so the character development is up to you. I love Gengetu with all my heart, but if she reappeared then she would no longer be my Gengetu; the fanon would leap on her and she'd get a whole legion of raving fanboys who insisted they always wanted her to come back from PC-98 and so forth. I'm satisfied with her being obscure enough so I can say I'm her fan with it feeling just a little special~

I seriously felt that the 3 of them have so much potential that didn't get used. Yumemi and Chiyuri definitely got some good coverage, but Rikako was just kind of thrown in there from left field. I really want to see some story behind her.

The same can be said for a lot of characters that appeared in PoDD and nowhere else. They just felt a little "thrown in" and they could really be interesting if the time was taken to give them stories.

I just have this kind of urge to make barely noticable/non-existent/forgotten people popular and loved. I would probably say Mima and Shinki, just because I know nothing about the others. Without meme's and ZUN's characterization, they barely "exist". And I don't like that.

Also, ZUN said that these characters won't be out of place, rather he can't think up ideas how he should bring them back, like because if they're back, people would like to ask them "where have you been?" and that's a nuisance, especially for all those characters. And ZUN likes to think up new characters instead of bringing them back.

So I just stay at my Expanded Universe view: PC-98 characters exist, they never left, just they weren't in the games. I mean, it's not like everyone in this world is always on TV, right?

Although to be totally honest, I found most of the PC-98 characters pretty dull. Maybe it's the lack of English patches for the games; I'd probably like them a whole lot more if I knew what they were saying (yes I know there's wiki translations, go away).

Doesn't mean one couldn't hope for it! I loved Ellen, and I'd like to see her show up again, as unlikely as it is.

I'd also like to see Chiyuri and Yumemi again too.

Other than her and the Rika/Sigma tag team, no-one else really stands out. I'd be a bit miffed if a new character slot was taken up by a returning PC98 to be honest.

They were great and all, but most weren't all that interesting (see: the minor bosses), and some have windows counterparts that are simply more interesting (such as Sakuya and Remilia compared to Yumeko and Shinki). While I admit Mima and Shinki were notable final bosses, I wouldn't miss them if they never came back.

Alice was reintroduced specifically to team up with Marisa in Imperishable Night. Yuka he sure seems to be a fan of though, since she seemed kinda random to pick for a seihou cameo over Reimu or Marisa... (even if they did already have their own cameos)

can't you just place canon over fanon.. like I do? :p (though there's not as much canon material for PC-98 games compared to the Windows games.. this would probably make them more susceptible to fanon deviations, if they were as popular, since there would be little canon material -- writings, character profiles.. -- to "counter" fanon, or at least counterbalance it)

Also, I'm not getting the Mima hate, what if I really like her as a character, instead of following some sort of trend? (personally, she's my #1 favorite in this series)

On topic, though... I'd agree that bringing Mima back could demand some explanation as for why didn't she appear in former games (though Yuka did manage to come back once).
But damn, having Mima fight Marisa, after all this time, would be an unique event! (if done right, of course..)

Mind coming up for a reasoning for that? That's about as viable as saying the same about Yukari. Alice has been one of the most recurring characters in the series, and for that to even cross over from PC-98 to Windows suggests that ZUN has a liking for her.

I recall an interview where ZUN said he did that because Alice was "basically just a Youkai version of Marisa."

And its funny you mention Yukari, because he used the exact same reasoning for pairing her with Reimu: They were pretty similar in personality, so he paired them up.

regarding fan fictions.. I don't feel comfortable writing fics (and I'm really not used to writing fanfics :p) if I feel that I could find potential flaws on them, due to canon possibly denying that story, and thus making it lose credibility. I've previously read about, for example, how people would make fanfics of characters from a series, and risk themselves to have their stuff invalidated by sequels (or prequels.. haven't thought of them here).
Perhaps I came to disbelieve fanon, by being warned (previously, once again) of how deceiving they can be (regarding to character backgrounds, for example), compared to the canon. If anyone has read the chinese The King of Fighters comics made by Andy Seto (who would later draw the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon comic adaptation), people could be led to think that the events and the characters' personalities would be believable as canon, without some advice.

Let's see... She resides in Makai, which is the domain of a mighty demon goddess, and she is an angel of death, leaving the possible explanation that she is a high ranking member of her society. The latest game took placy partly in Makai and caused some upheaval there. If the trend of one incident being linked to the previous one continues, it wouldn't be surprising if we saw the return of important Makai residents in the future...

Hmmm... I suppose it'd be nice to see him return... Also Konngara, because I want to find out what exactly an "Astral Knight" actually is (and his theme was pretty cool, too).

Hmmm... But the ones I'd really like to see return are Yumemi, Chiyuri and Ruukoto. I could imagine the first two wanting to make a return trip to Gensokyo to do some more research, and Ruukoto kind of lives at the Hakurei Shrine, so... Also nuclear robot maids are awesome~

I would too, but in terms of likelihood it doesn't seem to great. :./

I always think modern-sounding remixes of chiptunes sound off because they're putting more instruments into it than the song needs. Besides, the fact that the songs are made in this FM Synth gives the song a quality they wouldn't have with modern day technology.

Seriously though, I do not really care who (or if anyone) is reintroduced. Apart from a handful of faces, most of the PC-98 cast is just a blur to me, despite the considerable amount of time I have spent with those games.

Prior to PoFV though, I would have said Yuka, as she is one of my favorite characters. I was pretty disappointed to see that she did not receive an entry in Grimoire of Marisa.

I'd say, if Mima is reintroduced, any "demands" to know why she didn't come back sooner should be ignored. It sounds a lot like you were owed Mima's return or something.

I never had anything against Mima, and Shinki would be amusing to see return, if only because her interaction with Byakuren would be hilarious. On that note, Shinki needs to bring Yumeko along, so we can have a Yumeko vs Sakuya fight.

But if I had to pick characters to actually return, I'd like to see everyone in PoDD, especially Yumemi, Chiyuri, Ruukoto, Ellen, and Kana Anaberal. And Kurumi and Elly too, just because I think they're adorable.

Oh, and Evil Eye Sigma. Being able to fight EES in a non-shitty game like SoEW would be fantastic.

Neither do I. It's the goddamn fanbase though.

Only reason why I mentioned Yumemi is because I would like to see how she would interact with the Windows characters. She'd be much more amusing to see than others IMO.

I mean... at least she has some kind of development behind her. Using a boomerang shapped scythe as weapon, and shooting the floating tiles at you. Something different from your ordinary danmaku shooter boss... I mean, look at gengetu. She is a extra stage boss but has no definition on what is her main ability whatsoever. Apart from this, Elly has a memorable stage theme, and a decent boss theme. She is also a subbordinate from Yuka... which can be another note. Since Yuka returned in a windows game already... so, she could team up with her in order to make a playable pair, similar to the IN system. Elly just needs a surname and some more development and she would be a notable windows character. Aside from that... I would say Mima for obvious reasons.

Kotohime was interesting too, a princess trying to be an adventurer/'policeman'. And I don't know why, but Sara looks cuddly.
Sariel, though lacking dialogue, looked pretty bad ass. I can imagine, as Angel of Death, she's an subordinate of Shinki (since last time I checked Goddess > Angel, and they both lived in Makai). Together with Byakuren they would form the Makai Triad! (God - Angel - Messiah)

Marisa and Alice are gradually developing their powers over time, perhaps moreso than Reimu or others. Marisa is becoming very close to becoming a youkai, even. She's got her own grimoire, is studying the art of Danmaku and readily developing more and more spell cards. Alice is coming closer to creating sentient dolls (See: Titania, Goliath).

All of this general power-gaining could possibly peak with some sort of interaction between characters that fandom ties them to, such as Mima and Shinki. Possibly.

I agree, the human shape in the middle of Yuugenmagan would become more real while the eyes would become ethereal, and vice-versa. It seems creepy nowadays, in the Windows-era, but would be interesting.

I dunno, Just knowing what they've been up to and if they're actually still around is worth enough for me, it beats having to sit through the public execution of any self respecting PC-98 touhou. PC-98's sancturary is it's obscurity, this is what I've come to learn and embrace over the years and that's the only thing that's worth staying around for too.

If fanon wasn't as annoying and retarded as it is, then maybe I'd have some forgiveness, but I can't see any good with them getting their hands on PC-98. I just can't.

Arranges are mainly what I'm looking for too (although more doujinshi, fanfics, and artwork would be nice). Someone mentioned this.... and sure, new arranges of FM Synthesis music won't have its original charm, but the new stuff has its merits. Comparing apples to oranges here.

I understand your point, and maintain my position. Although if I did see things your way, it'd probably be better for me because, as much as I hate to say it, I can't see ZUN bringing back any PC-98 (let alone a character like Luize). PC-98 will forever be obscure, and you will be content :) while I still dream of Sariel's return.

I just like Elly's design. I don't know why, I just do. Also, scythe fights against Komachi in the fighting games would be awesome. :V

And do I really need a reason for those dopey ghosts? They just feel like they never should have left the series.

These might be rather simple reasons, but oh well.

I'd like to see Shinki turn up again, but considering she's from Makai there may not necessarily be a reason to pull her in. Besides, apparently UFO ripped off her iconic attack, so I guess as far as ZUN's concerned, she's already back. I also really liked Sariel, but part of that could just be the way the encounter worked in tHRtP.

I guess I'd have to say Mima. She was the closest thing Touhou ever had to a recurring antagonist. Since I was introduced to the series through the PC-98 games (not counting music listened to beforehand), I really liked how Touhou had some manner of Eggman, who was always at odds with the protagonist, despite not really being the primary villain anymore.
Of course, that would be a tough achievement for the opposite reason as Shinki. While there's no room for Makai in the series after the fifth game, if Mima came back to be a similar form of threat then that would drastically change a few things about the universe.

Note, most of my information regarding Touhou is a few games outdated. I don't know the story to SA and UFO, and don't intend to find out until I play them.

I'm all for Sariel, though. She/he's one of the few characters that we can SAY she/he. but that's not all, Sariel is a fallen angel, that has managed to maintain his/her heavenly appearance! THAT'S SO AWESOME! Perfect for deception.

You don't go to Makai if you are judged by Shikieiki (I want to say you would go to Jigoku, since that's pretty much hell in and of it self). Makai is an alternate dimension created by Shinki and thus has nothing to do with the yama's judgement.

This said, I'd like to see Jigoku again. We only saw that once and I'm curious as to what it truly looks like beyond the lack of detail HRtP gave us a long time ago.

I always assumed Mima ended up in hell... whatever its called in the Touhou universe. Although I'd picture her more as part of the staff than as one of the residents. Wasn't that where she first showed up anyway? I don't remember her in the Makai route in tHRtP (which is what I always go with because I like fighting Sariel so much better than the hell boss).

As for the girl/guy thing, considering its Touhou, I think its probably more likely that its a girl, even if Sariel's supposed to be androgynous. Of course since this is tHRtP we're talking about, some of the standards and expectations set by the series probably don't apply. After all, it wasn't even a shmup!

THAT was heaven... well, part of it. makai is different as far as I have seen, known, and heard. both routes lead to places of undesirable location. Why do you think Byakuren wanted to get out so badly?

also: Sariel is always referred to as a guy. the only reason his/her gender in Touhou is questionable is BECAUSE it is touhou.

kidding. you should probably look at the touhou wiki. It has some great info.

characters that would be awesome to see back: the midbosses. especially the mirror and the midboss which both appeared in 4 and 5.

meira. she gave up way too easily for a woman wanting the hakurei's power. and judging by her sprite, she DID appear to be an adult, so she should have that "I'm better than you 'cause I'm an adult" attitude. I'm not really a meira fan, its just remarkable that a character like her never showed up again.

I just miss my delightfully evil, pathologically lying evil spirit who liked to hang around and make fun of Reimu, as well as occasionally go on genocidal rampage through Makai with her good ol' pal Yuka.

Other than her, Kana. I just really like Kana. Her name, her theme, her somber backstory, and her potential to be used in a variety of ways. Plus, she's a poltergeist with actual ghostly powers, unlike the musical skills the Prismrivers demonstrate.

I'd say Shinki, but it's just too unlikely, especially now that Byakuren has pretty much expy'd her. She'd still be awesome though.

And Elly because FUCKING ELLY.

Luize is nice, but I'm pretty sure she died. Sadly. D=
