I'd be happy to~ I need an excuse to figure out Netplay anyway so that I can figure out whether I'm actually good or just good for my general area. :V

It'll probably be somewhere between 1-3 weeks, since my schedule's kind of cluttered right now too.

..if that helps you any.

I might play, but don't expect me to do anything amazing. Patchy, Suika, and perhaps Youmu are my only decent characters. :V

Lag will probably be an issue, as could be finding time to play if it doesn't begin in less than three weeks, but count me in.

Sounds like the overall reception is positive.  I'll get this set up when I have the time, then.

Do you use a router, by any chance?

I'd do it but I'd probably lag really bad unless you're in the Pacific area, and I can't host.

You'd be surprised, I live in Minnesota, have a terrible computer, and usually play Europeans with no noticable lag until someone uses Sanae's "Night With Overly Bright Guest Stars.

ShiningDrake: That's the problem then, you need to forward port 10800.  I can't help with that though, so you're on your own.

You might consider requesting Hamachi for people in the tournament, just so that people don't have to worry about port-forwarding.  Those on university Internet might have many ports blocked, and they'd have no recourse to unblock them.

Awesome thing about not using Hamachi is that only one person needs to have forwarded ports, so if you have them you never have to deal with hamachi again~

Net firewalls don't work that way.  Though depending on your setup you may not need to port forward at all, all the same, you use Hamachi so as not to reveal your actual IP, among other things.

I've never used Hamachi to play, but I can only play with people who have their ports figured out and stuff.

I've never played a single Touhou fighter using it.  It's extra hassle, and most importantly added lag.  If I can avoid using it at all for this I'd prefer that, but if some people absolutely need Hamachi to play then it's understandable.

Unless i'm not the host, i use hamachi.

Of course, even though i'm super slow at using skillcards and very bad at doing combos, i'm in if i have the time.

Title: Re: How would this board feel about a UNL tournament?
Post by: Esoterica on November 07, 2009, 03:18:16 AM
Quick update:

My laptop's still back ordered, so it's still going to be at least a week before this starts.

But, I also have two questions before this starts.

1. How does everyone feel about the standard tourney rule of "no changing characters"?  I'm sure this will probably be disliked overall, but on the flipside it prevents counterpicking, something that would destroy users of characters like Alice.

2 I'll ask when I have access to something other than a handheld device for internet.
Title: Re: How would this board feel about a UNL tournament?
Post by: Sen on November 07, 2009, 04:17:00 AM
Well, in the last UNL tourney I was in, everyone decided on three main characters they'd use and was permitted to revolve through those. It's not perfect, but it does give a bit of wiggle room while preventing absolute counterpicking.

Either way is fine with me.

Also, how about putting the tourney on YouTube? Have people save their replays and send them to one or more people to record and upload? I might be able to record some of them...

I was planning on doing that, don't you worry. :V

I thought about the whole "select a pool of characters" thing as well, but I think with UNL's four-deck system you should be able to get enough freedom to be able to change things up without needing to actually change characters.

UNL has a double-blind, doesn't it?

Last one I played, each player picked three characters, elimination-style.  You HAD to play in the order you picked em, and only switched if you lost a match; lose all three, and you lost the game.

Hmmm... that sounds really familiar somehow. Are you talking about the tournament on raocow's forum?

The pick-three format seems like fun. True, it is possible to have 4 decks, but I don't think they will make enough of a difference, at least compared to a whole other character. However, only the deck is a blind pick, not the character.

1. Yes, it was the Talkhaus tourney.
2. I do like it too (Either-or)

All of them.  All alt cards do is allow you to alter your character's moveset to better fit your style.  Looking through the cards for each character, I'd say Reisen and maybe Tenshi need them the most, and even then it's not because their default moveset is trash.

I think I'll try and see how far I can get with the default cards. The problem, though, is that most people would feel sorry for facing me, heheh.. ..due to the latency, since I'm from South America.. D:

I think (from previous matches in IaMP/SWR/UNL) that the latency is 6 frames at minimum.. (in GGPO, I think that the ping shows 200ms~250ms to USA players, at least)

there were input delays at the previous IaMP tournament, in my matches, as well..

Do you just not have the cards unlocked? Use Mizuumi's score.DAT with everything unlocked (http://swr.mizuumi.net/index.php/Main_Page) (except Suwako's theme in the music room, for some reason...).

Characters, yes.  Location, no.  I'd also like to know if you need Hamachi or not.

And I'm still not positive as to how characters will be handled, so list up to three that you might use for now.  If I decide to stick with one character, then that can be changed as needed.

Drop me a PM whenever you feel like playing.  I spend most of my time online begging people (unsuccessfully) to play with me anyway. :V

I'll be able to play between 3-5 PM CST next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Well, change of plans.  I'm posting from my laptop right now, so all I need to do is download UNL, transfer my profile, and we can start this. :V  Though at the same time, I'd like to wait for a couple more people.

I came out of lurking and signed up for the forums to say I'll play. D:

Only thing is, I play 4 characters, and I think it's harder for me to leave one out than it is to just pick one.  :(

But: Reimu, Yukari, Alice.

I'll just have to try and prove Sanae's good in casual matches.

I don't need Hamachi, and really would prefer not to have to mess with it, but if it comes down to it, it works.

Signed up when I saw. It sounds like fun. I'll give it a whirl ^_^.

Character:
Patchouli

Hamachi: No

I'd rather avoid Hamachi if possible. IRC would probably make it much easier to for everyone to reach each other; one meeting place, no fuss with AIM, ICQ or Hamachi and IRC even has plugins in Trillian and Firefox. Could just make a random room in efnet.

On stages: Personally I think the best thing for tournaments to do is Remilia or Patchouli's stages only. There's plenty of stages that are "fine" as far as the background obscuring bullets, but the indoor stages also don't show weather effects, so you don't have, say, Scorching Sun making it hard to see.

Ultimately it can be decided between players, but imo Cirno, Sakuya, and Utsuho's stages are awful for visibility.

Dealing with the weather system is part of the game. It should not be turned off.
It will only be a problem if you are not good enough to adapt to it.

God no.

If you're unable to manipulate the weather with spellcards and weather cards, that's your fault, not the game's.

Anyway!  Tenshi, Utsuho, Patchouli.

Updated the first post with all the info.  We have 14 people thus far, which I'd consider to be a rather decent amount.  If I've got some free time next week, I'm hoping to start this then before it ends up becoming one of those "maybe next week, no, the week after(ry" type of things.

Regarding character selection, I'm leaning heavily towards either one or two characters as opposed to the full three, but I'm not forcing anyone to completely narrow their choices down until after the first round starts.

Oh, we give characater info? Sorry, didn't realize that, herpderp :V

Characters: Remilia, Suwako, Komachi
Hamachi: Preferred, but not needed. I can't host matches though for some reason, I can only join them. :\

I suppose I could join in. I don't have any problems with time yet, so I could manage.

When it comes to characters, the only main I can assure is Alice. I'll probably keep Remilia, and unless it's two only, I'll choose between Utsuho and Aya.

Dealing with the weather system is part of the game. It should not be turned off.
It will only be a problem if you are not good enough to adapt to it.

What. You shouldn't have to adapt to anything but your opponent's play style. This is a fighting game, not a party game.

Exactly. And typically, for fighting games, you don't alter the rules of the game because you don't like them.

There's nothing wrong with the weather system. You can manipulate it to your advantage and the 'bad' weathers from SWR (which were perfectly managable) have all been toned down to inconsequence. Practically the only ridiculous weather left is River Mist and that is still managable.

Are you even signing up for this tournament, anyway?

I don't know about you, but my Sanae playstyle enjoys a healthy dose of Sword of Hisou to activate Scorching Sun then doing a 66C Night Stars combo to lock them in the degen for an extremely long time.

The only weather effects that are really all that terrible are Aya's and Patchouli's (Aya's due to killing the ability to guard and Patchy's due to killing melee attacks). The rest don't have a significant enough impact on a match to mandate killing weather effects completely.

In other news I *REALLY* want to enter, but I can only get online on weekends (bar holiday breaks like the one going on right now), so I'd be completely unable to play consistantly. T.T

This is the first time I've ever heard blocking being the reason of complaint for Aya's weather.  Then again, this is also the first time I've heard complaints about Aya's weather.

And Patchouli's weather makes melee register as type-2 bullets.  That doesn't kill melee, that makes it god tier for spirit crushing.

I agree with what someone said about River Mist though.  That weather's not rewarding for anyone.

Aya's gives Super Armor and makes you unable to block, right? At that point it pretty much becomes a damage race if you're ahead in health, or a race to avoid your opponent until the weather ends if you're behind in health.

Patchy's? I must be thinking of SWR, where it disabled use of melee attacks entirely.

That's Iku's.  Aya's makes you move super-fast and gives you three airdashes.

And yes, you are.  Except it only disabled the A key, characters like Suika who had melee attacks on the bullet keys (specifically, 2B) or characters with melee specials/spellcards could still use those.

Only typical I forget the exact name for each weather type, decide to use the character names to be more clear, only to get it wrong anyways.

Even so, I would rather the weather stay. I quite like to get Scorching Sun to activate and combine it with Reisen's poison special for fun times.

Anyways, is there a specific date for rounds set up or something? If there's a way for me to do my rounds on the weekends when I'm at home I'd like to enter. A Reisen main would help give more variety to the cast, anyhow.

I'm not going to be in any rush to finish this unless people are putting off their matches for as long as possible, and my hours online are extremely random too.

That's the right attitude to have. I've only had UNL for a week myself (I haven't played IaMP or SWR before either), and I'm still finding out what's even in this game. If anything, entering this tournament could give me a chance to learn a lot more about UNL.

As long as it's held anytime past Sunday night, when I get Internet back on my laptop (which has my UNL game on it), then I'll join too. Utsuho main, maybe adding Suika if I have enough time to learn her (just put down Utsuho for now). I don't have Hamachi.

Just curious, is there a requirement that I be able to host in general? I run off my university's Internet, so many ports became closed. I haven't found any open ones yet, nor have I been able to definitively open any (I've tried).

Yikes.  That's the same reason why I had to wait for my laptop to come in before this could start, considering I didn't get an XP disc with my desktop computer.

Speaking of my laptop, it took a whole six days for an update from Asus to render the wireless card completely useless.  Unless someone has experience with Asus laptops and their apparent tendency to do this, my ability to pop in here (and even get my matches done) is going to be limited as well.  So if I suddenly end up being gone for a bit, it's not because I died, it's because my computer did (again :().

Anyway, I see there isn't anyone new signed up (in fact, quite the opposite :(), so I'll set up brackets soon.

Well, this hit rather abruptly, so I was pretty unprepared. It got to the point where whenever I turned on the computer all I was greeted with was a black screen and explorer window for accessing files.

I should be fine now that it's done, but I don't have access to any of my touhou games for a while (and I was unable to save the .DAT files for the fighting games, so I'll have to unlock all Reisen's cards again once the game is up and running again).

If the rate at which people join/leave dies off soon, then we'll start.  Taking that out of consideration, I believe Tuesday and Wednesday should be good days for me to have everything organized and ready to go on.

You could always just use it for the tournament then delete it afterwards if it bugs you that much.

Cards take awhile to get anyway, and I certainly wouldn't want to hamper my chances of placing well in a tournament over something as simple as a replaceable file.

Single elimination.

Also, regarding characters, I've decided that everyone will be limited to one character as originally planned, but said character won't need to be picked until the first round.  In other words, whoever you use in round 1 is who you'll stick with.  As such, I'm erasing the character selections in the first post.

Expect this to start Tuesday.

I'd like to join but i can't netplay on my school's campus. all computers here and in order to connect your own computer for internet access run through the school's network and it blocks the game ahha. if i was at home i'd play. I can only play via hamachi, I've no idea how to forward ports so  i can't play without hamachi at all sadly.
my mains would be Remilia 3 times cause i have 4 decks and 4 different ways to play her  ;)
I'd love to get the replays and see how everyone did though haha.

Edit:
And i don't mind the weather at all. To me its just another thing. it doesn't affect my play style at all. only one that is a slight problem is typhoon since you can't block. all the other weathers have never changed how i play really.  in other words adaption and as Lord Shishio used to say "Survival of the Fittest is the Key"  ;D can't survive then you die

Oh, I already have one made, I just haven't had time to put it in image format.

Though I could just post who's playing who for the first round so it's not holding this up.  In fact, I think I'll do that.  Expect an edit in a couple minutes.

Esoterica vs NeoSerela

Funen1 vs Demonbman

WhyDoYouLieToMe vs Suikama

ShiningDrake vs PrismYoshi

huh what vs Siesta410

Copyrighted vs CarbuncleFlux

goldblade0 vs Fireseal

Garlyle vs AlexX

Serafie vs Patorikku

Verloren vs Shadowbringer

Rules:
-No stages are banned.
-The character you decide to play as in the first round is the character you'll be using for the rest of the tournament.
-Save replays of your matches as proof of who won.  I'd also like to upload these to YouTube if nobody's opposed to this.
-You have until next Sunday (December 13) for round 1.

This will be going in the first post as well for easy access.

K. I'm fairly busy right now, but when I find some time I'll poke my head in there

goldblade0: I can't reply to a PM until I've spammed the forums more. =/ I can make time almost anytime, so if you want to shoot me some days/times that work for you I'll see what I can do.

I'm on U.S. Central Time, but I'm also somewhat nocturnal.

Unfortunetly, Finals week is the next two weeks, so I regret to say that I will be unable to attend the competition. Sorry guys, but there's no way I could get everything in order and keep up with my school work at the same time.

Sorry, I wasn't home at all today until recently.  I will (should) be free tomorrow from 3-5 PM CST or so, if that works for you.

PMing it would probably work best.  If you can't attach it to a PM, Rapidshare it or something.  And of course, I'll need to know who's who.

Aaah, CST is GMT+/- how many hours? If CST is Caucasus Standard Time GMT+4, we might have a bit of a problem since whenever I get home from school it'll be past midnight over there. And on weekdays I definitely don't have time to fight before school(Only here now because I missed my bus  :V), wouldn't be able to fight till at least Saturday then.

Central Standard Time, GMT-6.

I'd assume that changes things a bit? :V

E: If your local time in your profile is accurate, it'll be 9-11 PM there when it's 3-5 PM here.  Does that work?

E2: We're going to have to do this tomorrow, actually.  I'm going to be busy again today.

4-6 PM your time, though by the sounds of it there's going to be a really nasty blizzard tomorrow at noon, so I may be available sooner (read: may.  My school would keep us in -30F with 3 feet of snow on the ground so long as there wasn't wind whipping it everywhere.)

I was one of the original people interested, but I dropped off of the internet to focus on school. Normally, I'd offer to replace in this situation, but I haven't figured out if I can get netplay working on my university connection. it seems that my procrastination may disqualify me :(
I've been delaying TH12.3 practice and experimenting, and so, I've delayed my match against Verloren until now.. I hope I can get this match done today.. <_>

(I'm usually at the #shrinemaiden irc room, on irc.ppirc.net , sent a pm to Verloren right before posting this..)

lesson 1: I must stop procrastinating like this :(

It seems like everyone's been procrastinating.  20 people signed up, 4 replays presented, and today was the deadline. :-\

Either I extend the deadline, or we proceed with a really small playerbase tomorrow.

Yeah I probably should've shared my experience with the IaMP tournament we had a while back; if you just set up matches on the forum and have the players find each other, nobody will ever play.

If you want to do a tournament you need to schedule it for a weekend one-day thing, and make it mandatory for everyone to show up in IRC (or something) that day. Then you bang out all the matches then and there.

As much as I'm itching to play more, this isn't like it's a big event with cash prizes, it's a more casual forum tournament. Half the people get eliminated each round, so it should become less and less of a problem. I say extend the deadline a bit, let people finish some matches, as long as they don't take too long.

I agree with Stuffman about everyone meeting in an IRC room, in the case the deadline is extended, one should be set up as soon as possible, and we should try to use it as soon as it's up. Firefox users (such as myself) may use ChatZilla, or the webchat site listed a few topics above..

so... will we use #hisouten on ppirc.net?

I suppose this means the rest of the tourney will be either ridiculously small, or involve everyone who got in a replay. Even the losers.

By my count there's 2 people that had their opponent withdraw, and 6 people that haven't had a match.

What about shuffling the matchups so that the people that haven't been able to get ahold of their opponent play each other?

Anyone who's here still that doesn't have their opponent here will just advance.

Well uh I'm still here

Siesta, if you want to use msn to organize our match, PM me your account and I'll add you I guess. I don't really have anything else that could be used if you lack it, though.

Yeah, sorry.  I've been busy with last-minute Christmas shopping, among other things.  I'll try to get the bracket for the next round made tomorrow morning/tonight, though I'm not going to have an internet connection then to post it with.

Oh damn, I forgot all about this.

If everyone hasn't died yet we can keep going with it I suppose.  Then again I only got four replays back, which means four people out of 20 advancing, meaning only two matches next round...I dunno, it's up to you guys.  Even if it continues, there's not really going to be much to it.  Either way I've decided against putting the matches on YouTube.

Honestly, I'm not especially interested in this anymore myself =/ Might as well just give up on it really.

Assuming everyone is still around (which I doubt, since it's been over a month), there's more than 4 people. A few people withdrew, and some people never actually had a match.

Just sayin', there's more than 2 rounds left.

For my part...I dunno, on the one hand it seems like it'd be futile to try and pull it all back together, but I came in hoping to play people, and I still want to play people, so I'm all for playing on.

I'm still willing to play if I can actually seem to organize a match with my opponent.
