Title: osu!
Post by: Ionasal kkll Solciel on May 04, 2009, 09:13:23 PM
Well, we have a touhou topic on the osu! boards; might as well have an osu! topic on the touhou boards, neh?

http://osu.ppy.sh

osu! is a freeware PC version of a popular series of DS games, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! and Elite Beat Agents.  Using mouse or tablet is a bit of a higher learning curve than a stylus and touchscreen, but since all the maps are user-made, most of them are generally possible for both.

I know at least three other people on these boards who play (if only because they have their bars on their signatures), and I know I've told at least a couple of people about who I am in the game.

I've really gotten rusty since I stopped playing frequently about half a year ago.  Beatmaps that I used to clear no problem with S ranks now have a few misses in them, and usually end up with B ranks.

Gaah the top score is in the 4 billions, I don't even have 1 billion...

Heh.

I had never heard of this game until your topic, but it looks like my guess of what it is was spot on.

I've fallen out of rhythm games for the most part, but Ouendan/EBA is great fun.  Perhaps I'll take a look at some point.

(i guess i should probably start an osu! thread or something instead of coming back to the intro thread and making it completely off topic, eh?)

Oh, hey, what's up.

I'll just drop this here like i did in the intro thread.

If anybody is looking to see how the game looks, etc., here's a couple videos i made of me playing touhou songs(an entire album in fact):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMRaCKaGQu0&feature=channel_page

I'm also making a touhou skin for the game currently (which i haven't released yet) which is looking to be heavily PCB and SWR based.

Wait, is it clicking or just running the mouse over the numbers?

I want to play it but it seems like clicking would be a hassle. :\

OT: Is that considered medium difficulty?

Like I said in the other thread, I should try it out. I've known this for quite a while, and I know a few others over at FFR who plays this (Xiao lol).

The mouse is probably something I'll have to get used to first. But hey, I managed well from a DDR pad to keyboard for stepmania =/.

The maps in my videos are actually very high on the difficulty scale.

Also you can use keys on your keyboard to "click" the notes, instead of actually clicking. This is how i play.

Maybe that will get me back to playing the game again...  I believe Drake has the SFX if you don't already have them.

They weren't exactly hard to obtain. (start touhou, turn off music, start recording, move stuff around.)

Think you could elaborate on that a bit?

I'm not actually offended in any way, but as part of the osu! staff(well..  if you could call me that. I'm technically only in charge of approving songs for ranked status), It would help to know of anything that could help make the game better.

Hey is there any chance to play this game on my DS with an R4 game card? That'd be awesome.

I know there has been talk of people trying to code this for the DS, but unfortunately i have no idea how much progress they've made on it, or even if they are still working on it.

Anyways, I've been working on a number of touhou related songs for the game, so i'll let you guys know how that goes.

sure.
pc :
+: new songs and more  than what the 3 games can give at total.
- : the feeling and gameplay the touch screen gives cant be compared.

if u can hack the ds version or make a new one for it and add more songs taht would be awesome
Hey is there any chance to play this game on my DS with an R4 game card? That'd be awesome.

if u talk about the original games then yes u can play with r4 i have it too if u talk about the one for the PC no u cant it is for pc
also since u got a r4 +ds i suggest to give a try Rhythm Tenkoku gold!(which was recently released in USA as Rhythm heaven)

I owned the JP version of Rhythm Tengoko Gold and the 3 Ouendan games for quite some time now. All are fun. I perfected every mini-game in RTG because it's so damn addicting.

Of course I'm talking about the PC Osu! to be played for the DS. I know they did it for Stepmania already.

The game can be played on a Tablet PC, as shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICYltsFK-3Y

However Tablet PCs are incredibly expensive, so there's no real solution. Sorry.  :-\

You can use a regular tablet just the same. I don't actually have one so i can't provide an example of how it would look. A lot of players use one though.

if im not mistaken, you still need to drag the cursor while using a tablet/tabletPC.

i've never used one though, so i can't report on what its like to play with. still love to try one out though

Only during sliders and spinners. You can literally make the mouse jump from one side to the other by lifting up and placing back down on the other side.

This.  Unlike Ouendan, osu has an extremely high learning curve and a low loss curve (meaning it's easy to lose skill).

Speaking of rankings, I'm kind of surprised one of my scores is still at number 1 despite being there for, what, seven months?

Generally if you just start at the top of the pack list you should be fine. By that i mean the most recent packs. The earliest ones are held up by old standards and are difficult to play. There is a thread somewhere on the forums that serves as a beginners guide(what maps to play, etc.)

i dunno where that thread is currently, but i believe the pack is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?xzxq5ovuupq

feel free to contact me on the game  :P

which map?

Over the Distance -Hard-

Flashlight+Hidden is a supreme pain, since you can't see the approach circles, and in some beatmaps, that's a very easy way to miss, since the circles are so far apart.

it took me a while until i got my first S, but that could have just been because i had a shitty mouse at the time (more like i failed at osu when i started so much that i quit it for about 4 months in frustration)

I'm quite offended, good sir. One thing you must realize is, being the creator of said taiko map, I've put a ton of work into it, and have played it several times to ensure that it is of top quality. (Also, it's not ranked yet.)  :-\

Also, if you look at my play count in comparison to all others around my rank, you can see I'm not one to grind every song I come across. In fact, I have less than half the plays of everybody else in the top 5. Also keep in mind for the past couple months I've put a good number of plays into taiko, which affects your play count, but not your ranking.

Though you do have a point. Those guys do a lot of grinding for some reason. Somebody has requested I play Marisa so many times a day until I FC it, but it's just boring to play it that much. Plus it's very demoralizing to fail a specific part so many times in a row.

EDIT: Hope I didn't come off all high and mighty... Didn't mean to, but I guess I really was more offended than I thought, now that I read over this.

For those of you that play osu! and want some more Touhou in it, I've been working on a map of Love-coloured Master Spark (http://osu.ppy.sh/s/6030) that is getting pretty close to ranking (I hope...). Try it out and enjoy!

I never really liked osu!  The mouse interface really doesn't fit with the game to me, but a tablet is a rather expensive alternative.  Additionally, I didn't like most of the charts I came across, and I just ended up missing the humorous stories and whimsical feeling of Ouendan.

i see your point. most of the maps for osu! are built with mouse controls in mind, even though some mappers do map in an Ouendan/EBA style.

and yeah. he fact that it is mouse controlled puts off most players, and i can see their point. when i first started playing back in July (one day before i joined this forum no less) i played for about 2 weeks then quit for a good 4 months. i dedcided to try it again around november time and then only started getting into it when i started getting better.

and yeah, i do miss the stories that went along with the songs in Ouendan in osu!. its possible, and has been done, but most people can't be arsed, or just don't know how to do it.

I installed the game earlier and it's quite fun playing ouendan with good songs. I downloaded Melt from Hatsune Miku and Don't Say Lazy from K-ON. I check the hardest difficulty and I can't understand how it's possible.

Do you have a link for that touhou skin you mentioned earlier? Thanks for showing me the game, never heard about it.

Some of the harder maps are arguably tablet/stylus-only.  Some also have tremendous skill requirements as well as a lot of time.

I don't know if it's just me or my mouse but I'm having a hard time feeling where the mouse is. Especially important when there's a note after a spinner... I usually end up missing those, unless I stop spinning..

I'm also curious about the taiko in osu! I'm guessing plays in taiko aren't recorded since it still beta-like or something....

Anyone know any good beatmap packs? I'm unsure what to get... since I need practice.

Anyway, in case anyonre cares. I'm linthuslyth(in osu!). Rank 27,471 as of this post. 87 accuracy.

thats what makes playing osu! with a mouse hard. it just takes practice to get used to it. unless your mouse doesn't work too well (like my old one)

I'm also curious about the taiko in osu! I'm guessing plays in taiko aren't recorded since it still beta-like or something....
Taiko is basically a clone of Taiko no Tatsujin, even though theres been some changes that have made it a little different, such as drumrolls could be button-mashed for points before, and now they have to be done in rhythm.

and Taiko isn't ranked yet, but they will be soon (and Catch the Beat too)

Anyone know any good beatmap packs? I'm unsure what to get... since I need practice.
get them all :V

actually, the best ones to go for are the latest ones, since the latest ones are of better quality than the older ones, but yeah, i still think you should get them all if you can. helps in Multiplayer.

maybe all the MoTK osu players should get together in multiplayer sometime :)

Then I really need to get some beatmaps, I've been downloading individual maps XD. Not sure we all have a common waking time but I guess that's how forum RPG's exist...

The pack I posted was an unofficial touhou pack made by some guy. Just scroll down page three of the themed beatmap packs thread. It should be there, the post by that guy showing all the songs in the pack.

Also, we should play multiplayer some time, with Kanako too, assuming he isn't grounded for life or something.

But I'm getting after every round. I'll have to adjust to the mouse/touchpad instead of actually touching the circles, otherwise I'd do A LOT better. But I'm not willing to buy a tablet for this game only =/.

From the rankings I'm already below #50000 in one round of songs. It's fun. I can pass most of the normal songs at least.

you could always get the Gojou Kai - SECRET SEVEN pack (its in the beatmap packs page). the actual maps themselves are very good, so if you're after good touhou maps, thats a good choice.
Oh yeah, right, forgot about that pack. They're made by James(at least half of them) though, so they're hard.

I really should go ahead and try "James Training" one of these days.

Jeez, my computer blows up and the thread just takes off. Anyways, Right before my computer exploded I almost made a Touhou Pack, i was just waiting for 1 or 2 more to be ranked. Now all that work is back on my dead computer.

Anyways, If you guys do at some point play in MP let me know please.

My goal in osu! is to beat Doomsday93

76 plays - Mizuki Nana - Innocent Starter [Hard]
That took too many tries. Stupid spinner kept killing me if I went into it with low hp. =V

Well, I'm now around 4900th. I should go back and improve a couple of my scores later.

Oh, and if anyone wants to put me in their friend's list, it's "SodiumPeroxide".

I've just gotten it; I've just done Cirno's Perfect Math Class and =NeutraL='s Satori Maiden so far. I'm vaguely worried that it isn't for me, tho ...

Cirno's Perfect Math Class
Don't worry, that one only has several degrees of hard as difficulties.

So I downloaded the SEVEN pack, passed all of them in Normal first try.

Now to try Hard.

*Self-Advertisement*

So uh, incase nobody has seen this yet, I got a Touhou map ranked a while back. I forgot to mention it here though for some reason. It's got a pretty good spread of difficulties, so hopefully it's not too hard for anybody.

*new post appears*

Oh hey those are difficult, so good luck. I posted a video of me playing all 7 of them a while back.

Hmm. I played the Easy version, and I have to say it's pretty good. I gave it an 8.

Once I get to 3000th, I'll probably take it easy and try some JAMES TRAINING. I know that "taking it easy" and "JAMES TRAINING" probably contradict each other, but I'll see what happens.

4664th currently.

actually, james training is quite hard, on hard at least. it does what it says on the tin though, theres a little bit of everything in those maps

James training is Full Comboing all the maps on their hardest difficulty. >_> The pack doesn't even bother including the easier difficulties.

That's why I said James Training and Taking it Easy contradict each other;I doubt you can take it easy with James Training. =V

I wish there was some torrent for the beatmap packs... I download 3(yeah, slow internet) and when I look at the site again there's 3 more XD. How am I suppose to download all of them when they multiply like that.

I doing a tad bit better at spinner with notes immediately after, but I now noticed something. My mouse is too small(or my hand is too big), so much so that my pinky finger drags along the right side of the mouse. It's fine on slow songs but moving horizontally(especially to the right) quickly is a bit awkward and I end up missing some notes sometimes. (That or I'm just being a typical gamer and blaming the controls when I suck ;)) Do you guys think it's worth it to buy a mouse?

Gotta remember to add you guys... btw, #17175.

Maybe because everyone went out to practice?... or got tired.

I don't know go to the forums... so what's the Tag Tournament?

Maybe I'll try that James Training., since I seem to be getting used to the game. I like this osu!, I think I'll be playing it for a long while.... gotta get a mouse, my hand ache at about after 10 songs... Might stop ranking so that I can train offline... or is that too cheap?

Currently #7455 ^_^

Huh, I dropped to around 4000. =V

Also, Cyclone's 8th. lolwut?

And, Doomsday watched me do horribly on Immortal Smoke. =V Well, at least that caused me not to reset 50 times in the beginning just because I messed up my combo. >_>

he doesn't bother with rank anymore. he's too busy playing the Taiko gamemode (i've been playing it a lot recently actually)

It's all good, because I didn't end up quitting whenever I broke a combo on a part I should be able to do perfectly.

I've started trying out 5 star songs but most songs make the game crash because my video card is made of failure and has infinitesimal memory :(. I've tried lowering every graphic option available, no good. I want a new laptop or computer.

Also, I suck at taiko, I might train on taiko before I start to advance more on the osu! main.

the standard osu mode and taiko need pretty much completely different skills. sure, being good on stacks in osu standard can help in taiko a little bit but thats as far as it goes.

Taiko is fun though
