Yep. Nine-ball did me in.
I was playing EoSD and felt it was a good start due to ending stage one at 70 power and getting a life up before reaching Cirno. Well, at Cirno I died during Icicle Fall and Perfect Freeze. This was what lead me to believe this was the most absolutely horrid run of my life. But I pressed on anyway.
Stage 3, one bomb, I think one death.
Stage 4, entire bomb stock, I think no deaths.
Stage 5, maybe a death, a few bombs.
So I get to stage 6 with what I believe t'were 3 lives. I stupidly run into a bullet. Two lives, two bombs. I take out Sakuya and proceed to Remilia. I gave it my best. I died at her last spellcard with 50% of her life left. If not for those two supremely stupid Cirno deaths, I probably could have been gold. :D
I should upload a replay so people can actually see my... uhm... skill, heh. :p

Only thing is that Touhou/Shmups in general suffer from the LCSDC proportion. It's natural that that happened.

Lives-Confidence-Silly Deaths-Confidence.

That's not so much "a lack of skill" as it is "a lack of concentration". Skill doesn't go away when you get it. No one is perfect.
You're definitely doing it wrong if you haven't missed and captured every spell card at least once.

Ah Yeah. I call this the "Goddamn Why I'm Playing Hero" syndrome.
