Title: Visual Novel/Dating Sims
Post by: Easy Mode on May 01, 2009, 10:02:28 PM
Touhou ones count, too.
Lately, I've been into Dating Sims lately. Currently playing Togainu no Chi.
It makes me wish I could fap.
Any of you into Visual Novels/Dating Sims? Discuss, make suggestions, etc~
Also... Didn't 4ch get together and make one or something? I know someone on here has something to do with it...

Hmm, I'm giving you pointers

1) You're nuts. Dating sims are like time-killers
2) I'm not into any sims, but if you want ideas.....
3) I come from <censored porn forum> and I can say there's a slaving sim you might enjoy. The project comes from there, and is hailed by 4chan a lot lately. For all the downloads and support, go there.

What? You wanna know? Fine. [link removed]

AAAAAANYWAY, I want to play Silver Chaos. There's some shota-ish boy with a tail.
Good enough for me.
Also... I'm kinda wanting to look more up on Kawata Shojou. That armless girl is moe.

You know I was kinda surprised when I found out about that.  It's a pretty interesting story and seems like it has potential.  I never thought I'd actually say this, but I'm kinda liking the look of the burned girl myself.  Though I'm not really a VN connossieur.  I have no idea by what measure is one considered good.  Should probably play more.  Recommendations?

Well, said of Visual Novels, I strongly recommend the KEY/VisualArt's Works.

KANON
AIR
CLANNAD(An English Translation exists.)
LITTLE BUSTERS!

These works are awesome.

Plus the folllowing Tactics ones
ONE ~To a Radiant Season~ (I'm working on a Chinese translation of this, There is an English Translation)
MOON.

AND Seriously, don't look them as P*rn, read them as reading a NOVEL.

In case you didn't get the joke, I own TLWiki >_>

Then

You are AWESOME

And I'm serious on that.

Doing a translation within 2 month is the top reason.

Since I'm also localizing games and ONE ~TtRS~ took me about 1 year with all the people who work with me from scratch.
All these unpacking, translating, testing etc.

EDIT: Which version of it? Renewal? DVD Version?

I remember tt one, dun haf it thou.

- Tsukihime is very very overated IMO, Benny will kill me soon
- Kagetsu Tohya: I actually find it tedius
- F/Stay Night - If it's just for the Nasuverse, okay.. but if it's the dating and etc... i am a bit lost.

- Shuffle! Series: erm, besides the original, the others are subpar but I guess Really, Really is ok.

my take is:

Yoakena + Fortune Arterial: Good picks and awesome art, animation was crap thou.

If you're into visual novels, and you haven't played Fate/stay night or Tsukihime, then there is something wrong.

They're not really dating sims so much as amazing stories, though.

It's funny you say that, I play all sort of these kind of games, you know, usually there are those where protag is male? I also play those where it is aimed for girls and you try to hook up with guys just because it's funny.

Hell, I play the ones for GBA back in the day.

Umm I mean the non-dating kind, although I did play one of those...and I bet we are playing the same GBA one.

There's English that's for sure.

Tsukihime itself is not free, but the English patch is.

OT: The only visual novels I've played were actually Tsukihime and Moonshine (thanks go to Moogy for the recommendation). If you want to count it, I also finished the Act 1 demo of Kawata Shojou too. I haven't played much, so I'll refrain from giving recs for now...

This is my VN list on vndb, sorted in descending order of score: http://vndb.org/u15/list?c=all;v=0;o=d;s=vote

You may find it useful in determining which games to play. Or not. I have pretty strange tastes.

Ignore the RPGs; I'm not sure why vndb includes them, but I added them anyway.

It looks like it'll be hard to find VNs for me, I need them to be free downloads (YAR HAR FIDDLE DEE DEE) with english patches, and I need to conceal them too, the good majority of VNs wouldn't be something my parents would approve of...

Title: Re: Visual Novel/Dating Sims
Post by: Moogy on May 04, 2009, 02:00:24 AM
I've played Saya quite a bit!

In fact, I've "played" it so much that I could basically document Nitro+'s scripting format at this point (well, I kinda did (http://tsukuru.info/tlwiki/index.php?title=Nitroplus_Scripting_System#System_v1)), because I had to totally rewrite the scripting progression. You see, the original game just uses one giant script file - this causes it to have severe loading issues when translated into English, because the engine takes longer to parse it or something. Anyway, I had to figure out how to split it into a bunch of different files and get them to load sequentially and all that. Some fun (read: tedious) stuff, I assure you.

And that was after I already proofread the entire game as it was being translated.

So yeah go play Saya; Makoto did an excellent job translating it, and many other people, myself included, worked quite hard on it as well.

I'd also appreciate it if everyone would play ef (http://nnl1.com/ef), because I slaved over those scripts too - I edited all of the actual games you see on that page. I think the Chihiro demo is a really polished piece of work, personally.

Was Sengoku Rance a dating sim?

I wanted to play it but dunno where to get it. Not asking it here since you probably get banned for posting here.

Just a thought, was it any good? I heard reviews about its 'supposedly awesome gameplay' that mixes some elements from the warriors strategy game and such. I hooked because I saw a really nice picture of Uesugi-sama.

No, Rance is a series, stretching back to the 80s.

Sengoku Rance, released in 2006, is the most recent main game in it.

Sengoku Rance is also an incredibly fun game with awesome characters. I can't wait for the finished translation patch - I've already exhausted the first teaser patch.

Not played a lot so far:
- Tsukihime

- Ever17
- Umineko Episodes 1-3, waiting for full patch on 4

A friend of mine's already suggested Saya no Uta and CHAOS;HEAD - anything else people feel like recommending?

See my post on the previous page. In other words, yes, Saya is a good choice.

Also, if you don't mind the hilariously shitty DVDPG format, definitely play Hourglass of Summer (probably the best straight-up renai game translated into English so far, though I'm still working my way through Suika) and Phantom of Inferno.

You might want to try Narcissu. The first novel has been translated and can be downloaded here (http://stage-nana.sakura.ne.jp/down.htm).* The link is at the bottom of the page. Note, however, that it is not a dating sim, just a visual novel. It is also worksafe.

*Narcissu is a free visual novel.

Ever17 is an amazing visual novel and the only VN where I could see that couldn't be a book or a manga or anime and also proved that the last route can save a game.

Fate/Stay Night is a fighting visual novel that feels like an RPG and a novel at the same time, I really love this one.

Tsukihime is great but since this is an amateur/doujin work in Nasu's time I can understand why some people can't like it until they got away from Arcuied's route and Ciel.

Narcissu is a great Visual novel that made me cry :( The later series seems to disappoint me specifically the 3rd one but I have yet to wait for those to be translated in english.

Togainu No Chi is...<3

Higurashi and Umineko no Naku Koro Ni is \m/
Very amazing. The latter one is 10034243241234124x better.

Insani has a lot of them too specially the festival translated ones seem pretty good.

Also Katawa Shoujo. Very good for a non Japanese Amateur group and actually very likeable.

Saya No Uta, a short visual novel and direct to the point with only 3 choices in the whole game and damn that game almost made me cry ;_;

The Noose is also pretty good from dejavu. It's not as highly graphical and more of a kinetic novel but it works great.

(dating sim sounds like one of those flash games you play online and click click to take off clothes towards the end.)

I'll be damned if they call Air a dating sim.

Seriously tho, I saw they imported the Uesugi Kenshin (Rance) figurine in today, and I decide to buy it, now I am down by 200 dollars till the next month pay.

So don't blame me, I shall ask eagerly for the full translation. quickly, whilst my fire still burns rapidly.

Okay, I finished Saya no Uta.
To be honest, I was rooting for Kouji and Ryouko the whole way, though I did feel pretty sorry for Funimori given that his choices were 'fall in love with an alien who eats humans and go bat-shit crazy' and 'go bat-shit crazy but tell people and get locked up'. I'm torn about Saya herself - she was just doing what came naturally to her race, and the only reason she didn't 'bloom' sooner was because she developed human emotions, but her lack of worry when Yousuke killed his family irritated me...
A pretty interesting story, if not the most pleasant one. Who you find yourself cheering on is probably open to interpretation, but I've made my opinions known.

EDIT: Just started Narcissu. I'm only one chapter in, and already I can tell this game will probably make me cry.

read the thread

also, don't use the term "dating sim"

is it because visual novel adds depth to these overglorified pornographies?

Some of the story had so much depth, they re-released with a Clean version just so everyone else can play it. Then spawn anime, spin off, sequel, figures, and so on.

The story is so good, many feel the porn is a turn off.

Because dating sims are a distinct genre from visual novels and the two shouldn't be confused. Dating sims are games like Tokimeki Memorial, where the actual dating is a gameplay system and there are statistics for each girl and the protagonist and such. Visual novels are, well, simply visual novels. Also note that dating sims typically don't actually have storylines.

Same for me, but sometime for certain wonderful characters... I just don't want to see her get lusty...

I have a friend in HK who I met up with (pictures of him may or may not arrive) earlier today...

And it seems he's in the process of making a VN somewhat based on Hetalia. Unfortunately, I don't have any CGs on hand right at the moment, but his art (he's doing all the CGs) is holy shit it got so much better than the last time I saw it, it is unreal xD

The system appears to be nearly done, it seems that the major work is on the script and CGs, as I managed to get a glimpse of the thing in action. It's not bad! I expected it to be in Chinese, but it is in kinda borked English xD

The first visual novel I ever played was Katawa Shoujo Act 1.

I used to think VNs were stupid and slow(probably because I had tried playing them in japanese for like a few minutes and found it completely boring to repeatedly press enter without knowing what the fuck is going on. It was stupid, I know).
But then one day I was bored(I'm constantly amazed by the things I accomplish out of pure boredom) and
browsing FAKKU and
found a link to the Katawa Shoujo website.
I then downloaded the thing and loved it.
I'm nwo playing Fate/Stay Night, because the anime was awesome.

Aeka's route is one of the best literary pieces I've ever seen. And it deals with bullying, so I'm sure many can relate. If anyone is interested, I can pm the link for the English version.

Also, I'm making my own visual novel, I should mention since this is a topic on that.

MOON. but you probably won't care for the ero unless you're a rape fetishist. Also Aoishiro if you love yuri, lol.

I don't care what your preferences are, everyone reading this thread must play Sharin.

What makes this a better choice than all the other eroge released these past two years. Or rather, how much pure insanity is actually in it.

I haven't played a visual novel in ages but I'm definitely looking forward to reading through Narcissu 2. Kinda funny how hopeless the translation project was looking for a while, and yet everything worked out in the end.

I also started Wanko to Kurasou a few months ago. Worst case scenario, it'll be an entertaining nukige.

More self-promotion  :V

http://zerozigen.com/product/koenchu_sora.html

This Visual Novel got its avant-premiere last week at A-KON in USA and was put up for sale there. Apparently, full release will be either at Comiket 78 or Comiket 79.

It features full english voices and text (translation fatto in casa by ZeroZigen) and will soon feature a spanish (done by yours truly, yep, I'm the translator =P) and german versions. Can't have a japanese work without touches of german.

Anyway, the VN is NOT 18+. It has severa minigames and even achievement-like achivements (think of it like Steam achievements) when you unlock thingies and such.

Now, I'll be running a poll among spanish speakers to see which of the two current box art covers they like the most (so if I have to translate said box art, I want the right background). Or maybe I can ask to get a special cover, bwahaha.

Finally read Narcissu. A very nicely done story. At the beginning I was thinking
I hope they journeying so I don't have to read about them being stuck in a hospital for 2 hours and then they did just that :)
I was hoping for some sort of
confession or something
at the end but it's fine as it is.

Also in other news it looks like Touhou Love Stories: The Bad Ends: The Visual Novel is gonna have quite a fair amount of content. Look forward to it :V

Most recently finished VN was also Narcissu Side 2nd, haha. Overall, explains a lot of unanswered questions/mysteries left from the first one and definitely
had more of an adventurous feel to it since they weren't stuck in the hospital the entire time.
I was expecting a more depressing ending to be honest, but I think it's still good with how it ended. And thanks to the game finally being fully translated, I was able to obtain the correct song tags for the OST, lol. Looking forward to reading Die Dritte Welt whenever it's translated (let's hope progress isn't delayed again  :V ).

Currently playing through ef the first tale. Started a couple weeks back but haven't had much time to finish it but I'll try to do so this weekend.
