It's kinda weird to see so many Bullet-Hell-Shooters with 2 player mode, but nobody had the idea of opening a thread discussing about the possibilities of 2 player modes in "normal" Touhous.
When it comes to dialogues... doesn't Castle of Shikigami 3 have different dialogues dependant of which characters are choosed?
I can see why the older Touhous aren't designed for 2 players, but I'd like to see something like that in newer Touhous or by patching an older Touhou anyway.

Yep. Pick Roger and Munchausen for added fun. :V

Saw a little bit on Marzgurl's Translation Terror video. It's brilliant.

This was one thing I always wanted in a Touhou game. I always mentioned this in every "what do you want in a Touhou game" threads.

I support this 100%.
Off-topic: Is Castle of Shikigami 3 worth getting? My bullet hell experience is completely limited to Touhou.

Sure it is. It's just really freaking hard. :)

yes, it uses "normal" flying character sprites and a particular grazing system

I saw a video once of Mushihimesama Futari BLACK LABEL played on God Mode with one person controlling both characters by himself.
I have no idea how they did it but I'm pretty sure they've become blind to all colors barring purple :V

Arcades are a social environment, and cabinets have second-player controls built into them, so it's just a natural step to add support for two players. Touhou is meant to be played at home, so ZUN probably doesn't think it's worth spending the time implementing the feature. He'd probably also want to write more dialogue to accommodate different combinations of characters, and I bet he's too lazy for that.

I remember watching a video of someone doing this with Ikaruga. It was just sick, given the game's polarity system.

Even after watching the videos where he includes his stick output, I still don't think that was done all in one run. It's possible, sure, but with only losing one life to Stone-Like? I doubt it.
Personally, I don't think coop on Touhou is feasible. Ikaruga, Mushihime-sama, and most of the shumps I've seen all have huge bosses, with hitboxes to match. In Touhou, the best we can get are bosses like Mokou and Yuyuko, who both have an expanded hit zone due to their extra items (phoenix wings, the fan thing). Without that extra size, both players would be competing against each other in the higher difficulties just to deal damage, much less get into the tiny holes and continue to deal damage.

So why not have two bosses who share the same health bar, ala the Prim -
Just like Mystical Chains?

You played with two characters in IN anyway, so why not give the players the choice of selecting a team? What I mean both players select a character from the team and ZUN doesn't need to write more dialogue.

How would deathbombing work then ? Since you use your other character's bomb when you deathbomb .

Uh... no IN-style deathbomb at all or using the death bomb of the character you're playing?

Some spellcards like Eirin's Astronomical Entombing could be interesting in co-op , like if one player destroys the familiars while the other shoots Eirin .

I support this 100%.

Especially stage 3 for me
oh god invisible blocks

Co-op would be pretty interesting. shame that if it ever made it into a Touhou game, i'd have no-one to play with (since none of my local friends play touhou, or any 2d shooter that i know of :()
Unless it could be over the internet, that would be all sorts of awesome
-
oh no no, no shooters over netplay, destined for trouble
-
Sounds like a good idea to me. Tbh, PoFV was great at first at with challenging other people. Now we just need a seperate game for co-op. :3
