So I have been wondering about how you guys will answer this:
Suppose the series wasn't made by a Japanese person. If Touhou was made in another country instead, how will it be like?
What will your answer be?
If Touhou was made in the USA, it will have a much more modern setting, complete with guns and cool cars everywhere.

If Touhou was made by an American, for one, there would be no need to make translations for the game as it would already be in English.
Somehow I think an American!ZUN would still be striving to create a universe that has its roots in ancient Japan with Japanese folklore and traditions and the like, although we might see more Western-themed characters and pop culture references.
Tl;dr If 2hu was made by an American, it would end up being a lot like my fangame fanfics.

We might have spirits based on old west legends and tall tales.
I think it'd be interesting if only because animism (which is one of the primary structural tropes that makes Gensokyo what it is) in the US has never been as pervasive an element in storytelling among all people groups the way Shintoism influenced so much Japanese thought, and that might have changed the way American!ZUN wrote Touhou Seihou. There are some people groups that do that more than others, though. You know who does? A lot of native American groups. See, for example, the concept of Wakan Tanka among the Sioux, and the whole Sun Dance idea among the Lakota.

If it was made with the same mindset ZUN had, putting Fantasy stuff in a Oriental Fantasy setting, things might still be pretty much similar regardless of the country where the author'll come from. A foreigner who is 100% ZUN in the inside (passion for beer included) and is as knowledgeable about folklore ? That's okay, nothing says a foreigner can't familiarise himself with another country's culture, so... :derp:
If Touhou was made by an American, for one, there would be no need to make translations for the game as it would already be in English.
^ Also things'll be more convenient. VERY convenient.

I have a feeling that it would be something similar to that of Seihou.

I think that if touhou was made in another place then it would focus on the mythology of that place. I mean, it'd still be touhou right?
-
It would be called "Homestuck."
-
It would be called "Homestuck."
No, "Alice in Wonderland".
Or "-Pacific- USN Fleet Girls Collection."
-
It would be made in RPG maker and never finished, but still appear on steam anyways.

Assuming its fanbase is also Western, it might be having a very FNaF-like fan following.
