Title: Touhou on virtual Windows?
Post by: Phoenix_lostarr on October 24, 2014, 04:49:18 PM
I'm running a virtualized copy of windows 7 on my laptop, and I@d like to run Touhou within that.

However, when I start the game, I get an error message, of a few bizarre characters long.

I'll edit this post to provide the message itself, but are there any known issues with a virtualized OS and touhou?

Windows in virtual machine shouldn't be a problem for these games. There might be issues in GPU aspect but I don't think that it was the reason.
Anyway, error message will make things clearer.

Okay, so I tried again, and turns out the error message was caused by the game not opening but the process still started, so I tried again and it gave a 'this is already running' message, I assume.

However, trying EoSD gave me a different message, attached.

So, the questions are: why don't the games actually run when I execute the application, and what does this message mean?

I think the error may be trying to say Direct3D is missing. You'll need to put that and the necessary DirectX files on your virtual PC as well, and maybe that'll help.

Yeah, it seems it can't access Direct3D. IIRC, you need to install Guest Additions for VirtualBox and, probably, enable 2D/3D acceleration in virtual machine's settings.

so I enabled 2D/3D acceleration and installed DirectX on win7, and.. still nothing.

Exactly the same problem, in fact  :ohdear:

But did you install Guest Additions? During installation, it asks if you want to enable Direct3D support which you need.

I needed to install guest additions to make the shared folders work, so yes.

Did you mark Direct3D option during installation? By default, it's not marked.

It's likely that you will need to load Windows in Safe Mode in order to make it possible to select that option during Guest Additions installation. To load windows in Safe mode, you need to press F8 while windows is loading and select Safe Mode on the text menu which will appear (I don't know if it's still the same for modern windows versions but probably it is).

I've already installed guest additions. How would I go back and re-select that option?

I'm pretty much sure that you can try to install it like if it wasn't installed at all. Just be sure that you loaded in Safe Mode otherwise the option will be grayed out and you won't be able to select it.

So, they're all installed and working now... except PCB. Whenever I access the main menu, it keeps cycling through the menu options, and doesn't let me select one, it's as if the down arrow key is being forcibly held down, even when I don't touch it.

Any idea what could be causing it?

So, the games work now. That's already something :)

In case of PCB bug - as much I know, this issue doesn't really have anything to do with VM. It happens to some people (for me is happened some time ago too) and not really sure how it can be fixed. It might be better to make a separate topic about it.

Upd: hm, on the other hand, check this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694215), it might fix the issue.
