It returns.

November is National Novel Writing Month. A month people set aside to attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days. It's a marathon crash course on writing for both beginners and experts, and the setup only grows bigger every year. Most importantly, it's only 9 days away. That's not a lot of time to brainstorm, create outlines or do research, but there's no time like the present to start. An outline, even a rough one, can be the difference between victory or coming up 20000 words short.
If you're one of the many MotK people signing up please feel free to toss your profile up so we can collect them in this first post and others can find you as a writing buddy or just gaze upon your work from afar. And of course as always feel free to post your struggles in thread. Maybe this year we can talk about the editing afterwards as well! (Ha.)
I'm going to try to write something original this year so I expect to crash and burn horribly. How about you all?

Fffffffffffffffffffffff.
Do I actually want to do it this year? Maybe I can actually "finish" the last novel from 2010 (even though I already had the ending in mind, but never put it into words). Granted I could probably change it now that characters like Kosuzu exist.
http://nanowrimo.org/participants/kiro
Gonna think about it.
-
Last year was my first NaNoWriMo, and it fell solidly into the "Rebel" category. Still, I did make the goal (2 hours before November ended), so I was happy with it.
My name is Asterus (http://nanowrimo.org/participants/asterus) on the site
-
>Fails previous 2 years.
Oh why the hell not!
Kanjou (http://nanowrimo.org/participants/tamashii-kanjou) is aiming to at least get past 10k this year. Halfway would be a solid improvement, and pretty big milestone for me. And 50k is... still a long-shot; but who knows~ XD
-
You know, seeing as how I haven't had good enough internet access to even be able to make this thread (thanks Iced!), I find it doubtful that I will be able to win this year, but what the hell, bring on the challenge. Let's see all two words I will be able to add to Weave the Stars this time around. http://nanowrimo.org/participants/sakurarurouni/
-
I already had plans to write a Touhou story independent of NaNoWriMo, and I had been planning it out and studying the craft of writing on my own time over the past month or so. However, seeing as the timing of all this is very good, I might as well give this a shot. My profile is here (http://nanowrimo.org/participants/funen1).

Lets see if I end up writing something.
-
I have all the time in the world to write a novel.
I have one good idea for what sort of novel I'd like to write.
I have virtually zero creative writing experience.
I have not much hope that I'll get to 50,000 or even 10,000.
I'm all in. (http://nanowrimo.org/participants/ibaraki-ibuki)

Soon. Very soon. Only 48 hours to procrastinate on your outlines!

I'M NOT READY

What's an outline?

I'M SO FUCKING HOSED I HAVE NO OUTLINE AND NO IDEAS FOR HOW TO GET PAST THIS PARTICULAR BLOCK OF STORY
IT'S TIME TO TURN TO MY FAVOURITE SOURCE OF NANOWRIMO ADVICE

TIME TO NOT FINISH THIS WEW
http://nanowrimo.org/participants/azurewraith
-
IT BEGINS!
And Trance, you already hit 5,500! I mean, you always start so strong~ XD
-
It has begun!
MORTAL KOMBAT!
Anyway, 2166 words from my first chapter. Admittedly it was a reworking of an earlier version from years ago, so it's not entirely made of new writing per se, but it's all better framed, I think. Feels so much better to have it part of a more coherent theme this time. All the stuff beyond this point is gonna be new writing, but I should be able to find some sort of rhythm once I get going.
EDIT: Make that 2836 words for my first day. I wanted to get what I had in mind for the beginning of the second chapter written down before tomorrow, because football I may not have as much time as I expected.
-
http://nanowrimo.org/participants/roukanken
some would call starting your novel a day late and without any sort of preparation a mistake
i prefer to call it a handicap
-
Not going to lie, quite happy getting over 2k done on the first day. The ideas just kept flowing, so I have to hope that I can get past the 10k mark this time round~
-
Ditto, figuring out how to start a story is the hardest part, getting through it easily is always a relief.
-
In which I started late because Halloween was still a thing. (http://nanowrimo.org/participants/lemgambino) Still, it's a start. Here's hoping I can make the first actual chapter(?) tomorrow.
-
Refusing to look back and edit gives massive time boosts! It also makes me wince every time I think about posting it or editing it.
Anyway 5k words today thanks to ~outlines~ and setting creation. Considered aiming for 7k but that's a dumb idea. Don't want to burn out day one.
Besides soon I'll get to the early plot and I have no idea where that's going....
-
OH MY GOSH! I've actually got past Day 2's par already, and it's only 12:30pm now. I could actually get to Day 3's par before it even starts if I keep this up! I never start off this good! XD
-
Broke 10k words by day 2.
I'm alright with this progress. I've been feeling very shitty these past couple of days so I think I should be fine with this.
-
good progress so far
[attach=1]
-
And that's 5,000 crossed. I can't believe this is going so smoothly! I have belief for once; the words just don't seem to be stopping~ ^^
-
4318 words after finishing the second chapter. That was as far as I was able to outline the "beats" before November started, so I'll have to devote more time to organizing them for future chapters.
Is it just me or is updating the word count on the website kinda finicky? It likes to time me out at least once every time.
-
I get the occasional moment where I click the box, and it either auto selects the whole page, or just makes the box vanish completely. Kind of annoying, but I'm dealing with it.
Also, just got past 7,000 words. It's half past midnight here, and I'm kind of freaking out at the moment. 10k is going to be broken for sure. 25k has to be a realistic goal for me now; especially if I can keep this kind of pace going. I'm preparing for at least one or two days where I'm just going to be too tired to do anything (full day shifts on every Friday this month, shudder), but otherwise, I should be okay~
EDIT (12:20am, 4th of November. Word count is OVER 9000! I've beaten my personal best, and I can easily get 10k by the end of today. BRING ON THE WALL!)
-
Can't get on the NaNoWriMo site right now to update this (EDIT: managed to get on), but I'm up to 6175 words partway through the third chapter. Now is when my time management skill will be tested, as I finally received the first work of the month from my company, and that obviously comes first. I'm happy that I managed to stay on pace despite that though, even if I had to work late into the night. Also I find it ironic that I decided to give Reimu a minor headache in this chapter, and then I start developing one myself this afternoon. :V
-
Yeah I've hit 503s and 400s myself. Still it seems to recover fast.
At 8466. I knew I was going to have to go all out on weekends and pace myself on weekdays so pretty pleased with matters. Better yet I'm not blocked on plot.
-
Struck by demotivation, feeling worthless and work. Gonna have to work double-time towards the weekend.
FML
-
>11,233 words.
>Just crossed into Day 5 now.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! MY MIND HURTS! BUT IT FEELS SO GOOD!
(Also, hugs Trance.)
-
Third chapter's done, up to 7292 words. I realized in the middle of this that the meat of this last chapter really came from a pseudo danmaku duel (only a few moves combined from both sides), which may bode well for the upcoming chapters. Whether I can keep up with NaNoWriMo's suggested daily average remains to be seen though.
-
8857 words so far.
Read the first in order chunk here (http://amratsu.tumblr.com/post/101906271427/) if you want to read a Kamen Rider fan series about monster girls.
edit: chapter 2 (http://amratsu.tumblr.com/post/101994525312/). 11933! I've got a full day's worth of leeway. Feels good.
-
Whew, 10k get!
I'm noticing a problem in that I tend to get distracted quite a bit. Trying to stay focused on writing for a sizable period of time has always been an issue for me. I'll need to change some things around.
EDIT: 12k reached at the end of the fourth chapter. Choreographing danmaku duels is fun. :) My favorite part was probably writing the buildup to Marisa's first Master Spark. On an average fairy. :V
-
good progress so far

this is me because i am too busy securing a job and my exams are still happening
fml
-
So I started this today. Cause what's more fun than a nine-day handicap?
I'm actually quite curious to see how close I get to the 50k this year. Last year I made it, but I didn't have a full-time job then, and I still only made it barely on the last day lol. So this should be interesting.
-
Wow. Me thinks Rou-tan will be very happy with the section I just wrote today. Just couldn't stop writing that scene; enjoyed it so much~ XD
Also, so close to 20k now! :3
-
I may have to pull out a 1 week wonder at the rate I'm going!
...Ah well, I tried.
-
I still haven't even started on my story because of working on projects for school, I hate you all. (But seriously, if I don't get started in the next five days I think I should just throw in the towel early. Now that I've finished these projects, I should have this week of free time to put towards writing.)
-
>25,004.
I'm halfway there.
You have no idea how fricking EXCITED I AM ABOUT THIS! And this while balancing a full-time job and organising events for both work and social stuff. *flails*
-
Not bad Kanjou!
I'm sitting at 21600 myself. I'm aiming for 800 on weekdays and 6500 on weekends to hit the goal line, and that's working out... okayish. We'll see how I handle this weekend.
-
Today, after starting 8 days late, I managed to get my projected finish date down to December 30th, 2014. Not quite where I'm satisfied with it (obviously aiming for finishing in November!), but I must say it feels good to have a projected end date actually within the same year lol.
-
This is it! The 10 day countdown starts, and the option to validate your novel is now open! (For me it is, anyway. Might not for others depending on where you are and what not.)
I have 13,374 words left to write to hit my target! PUSH ON, EVERYONE! LET'S GET THE WORDS FLOWING! <3
-
Unfortunately work has caught up with me, and in the process I've lost most of my immediate interest in this. I do still want to finish the story, but now is just not a good time. Real life has been busy this month.
I can still take my performance from earlier in the month and find out how to improve it though. My main issue is speed - I still catch myself thinking a lot about what words I want to use, and I need to train myself to go more for subtext in the first draft. The fact that I work as an editor doesn't help this habit lol. But once the calendar turns to 2015 I'll be able to figure out how best to balance all this.
And good luck to the rest of you folks!
-
Yeah, in between moving and not having much time in between working and figuring out basics like heating our apartment, scrounging around for food to eat, and finding a new place to live, I never really stood much of a chance. Good luck to everyone still in the running!
-
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
YES! YES YES YES YES YES YES! YEEEEEEEEES! FRIGGING YES!
I HAVE WRITTEN 50,000 WORDS IN 26 DAYS!
I haven't even flipping finished the story yet~ ><

Congrats!
I've hit 48741. And still not at the finale. >.<
At least I only have one more twist to go before then.
-
And there we go! Final confirmation that myself (and Iced) have had our novels validated, and therefore, are the first two in the MotK Winners group! XD
A friend of mine has also jumped on the winner's circle from outside of MotK; but that's to be expected from someone who is trying to get his novels published,
About 24 hours to go on my time-zone now. Can anyone else come and join us? <3
