Title: Touhou fan games will appear on PlayStation 4 and Vita
Post by: Edible on September 01, 2014, 07:37:13 am
More information to follow.

https://twitter.com/PlayStation_jp/status/506344651414966273

Summary of information so far:

With ZUN's permission, Sony has launched a project to release Touhou fan games on PlayStation consoles.

The project will start with Mysterious Gensokyo 3, Touhou Soujin'engi ~ The Genius of Sappheiros, and Touhou Sky Arena ~Matsuri~ on PlayStation 4, with more games to come in the future.

Depending on the wording of the announcement, the initiative may even extend to other doujin games that are not Touhou. However, it is not known whether the official Touhou games will be released.

UPDATE1:
See cuc's post below (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,17316.msg1123928.html#msg1123928) for the significance of the project.

UPDATE2:
Tweets by various participating developers indicate the project is still in an early stage. Nothing is set in stone about which game they will port, and to which platforms.

UPDATE3 (Dec 2014):

T'was just announced at Sony's pre-TGS stream.

So yeah, more information will be forthcoming, but they showed off footage from a number of official and doujin touhou titles.

I think I may be finally getting a PS4.

What about the ones going straight to PS4?
And does this mean Touhou is finally going commercial?

You can publish on console and still be considered an indie dev.

It wont be translated, as far as we know. Only for Japan!

Today's announcement is for Touhou fan games only. Namely, Sky Arena, Mysterious Gensokyo 3, and Genius of Sappheiros.

While the trailer contains images of DDC, it is unconfirmed at this point that the official games will come console-side.

EDIT:
Calm down a bit. I'm busy at the moment, and will attend to things later.

Thanks in advance!

These are all doujin works released by various circles. The first games shown were Fushigi no Gensokyo 3, Genius of Sappheiros, Touhou Sky Arena Matsuri (all labeled under "Round 1"); then they showed Marisa and Alice's Trap Tower and a bunch of others. They make it very clear throughout the whole trailer that it's all derivative works / fanmade games.

ZUN also chimed in with
Quote
ZUN (https://twitter.com/korindo/status/506345762343497728): Just to get it out of the way, this does not mean that I will be releasing. (Not saying for what)

Well, you'll never know if it's a teaser for something.

Still, having derivative works appearing on a home console is a pretty big news for the series.

Maybe I'm strange, but I find this development peculiar. I mean these are basically PC fangames that are being ported to the Playstation. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Correct translation of this tweet:

By the way, very soon there will be a thing, not from me. I won't say what it is yet.

The context is that he tweeted it during a few minutes before the announcement as a tease.

It's only fan games, going by the video. From the looks of things, ZUN's basically giving these developers and Sony the OK to release them on the PS4. Nothing as far as the official games though. However, the video mentions "Touhou AND doujin games" so it's possible ZUN could be releasing them at a later date. In fact his tweet that Drake linked to basically said "For the near future, I'm not releasing anything" could be a subtle hint. Or I'm just reading too much into it.

I really wish it included the Vita too but this is making a PS4 look a bit more tempting.

Like I said, it's not "near future", the tweet was made before the announcement, he meant "soon there will be an announcement, not from me."

There ought to be a specific term for the phenomenon where a creator's denial of doing/being about to do something is taken by fans as a "tease" or even confirmation of that very same thing.

I'd say this announcement was on my list of "things that I would never ever have expected to see happen", but the reality is that it's still so out of left field I would never have thought to put it on that list.

I'm still sitting here like "what"

I think there may be a game produced exclusively for the PS4, but it's non-canon and ZUN doesn't have involvement, other than, perhaps, helping with getting it released.

Also, I still haven't gotten an answer to where that pic in the Twitter originally came from, or is it made specifically for the announcement?

A lot of doujin games use a 4 button control scheme that's extremely easy to map to a controller. Heck, I played Genius of Sappheiros with a controller. Obviously the programmers are going to have to do some extra work to port them, but I don't think there's any particular design obstacle. They were probably only on the PC in the first place because it's easier to program and sell.

OFFICIAL WEBSITE about this promo "http://www.mediascape.co.jp/zunps/" ZUN X PLAYSTATION
Thanks for linking to the website! Everything makes sense to me now.

As you can see, the company responsible for this project is called "Mediascape". According to its own profile (http://www.mediascape.co.jp/company.html) page, the president of the company is Nozomu Ezaki. Google tells me, Nozomu Ezaki is none other than ZUN's buddy, D.N.A., of the doujin circle D.N.A. Softwares. As I have written before, D.N.A. has always been helping with ZUN and Tasofro on the business side of things.

In other words, the company that will be publishing Touhou fan games on PlayStation systems is ZUN's own people, not some outsider.

The website also has a contact (http://www.mediascape.co.jp/zunps/contact.html) page, which fan game developers can use to apply for this publishing program.

When earlier this year, ZUN said he wanted to do something big to help doujin game developers, I suspected he wanted to create his own platform for doujin games, but couldn't imagine the logistics of this platform. Now we know that his plan is to use D.N.A.'s company to do the publishing, to build on Sony's console platform, and to lead the project with Touhou fan games. Bravo, ZUN and friends, these sound like smart moves.

P.S.: It happens that yesterday ZUN participated in the PoriPori Club web stream, where he talked with the editor-in-chief of Famitsu magazine, and tommorrow (http://cedec.cesa.or.jp/2014/session/BP/13744.html) D.N.A. will attend a game industrial panel and discuss the status of indie games.

Makes sense that one of zun's buds is behind this because this should show that claims of ZUN being a sellout or what not are unfounded speculation and that he's not doing this willynilly.

I guess since ZUN's relaxed his own stance on digital distribution, he's applying it to the restrictions he had placed on fan-groups doing likewise. I wonder if soon he'll be issuing a new version of his touhou derivative work guidelines to reflect this new avenue?

Am I right in thinking you can change your region on the console to access the japanese download shop? (Sorry, not a sony-ite, I don't know the terminology) Might be a nice way to get these games available in the west, as long as they aren't too text-heavy.

Giving a hand-up for indie doujin game developers is a pretty puritanical way to define "selling out", so I wouldn't worry about those people tbh.

You can access the Japanese PS3/4 online store by creating a new Playstation Network account and stating that you're from Japan. You can find a guide with pictures here (http://kotaku.com/5982662/how-to-make-a-japanese-psn-account-on-the-new-psn-and-how-to-navigate-the-store).

This is a pretty interesting development, though I'm very sure this is ZUN mostly doing this for the doujin game creator's sake of getting themselves out there more, and not ZUN wanting Touhou itself to be more popular. If he did I'm sure he'd put his own games as well.

Good on him anyways. Good Guy ZUN.

Some additional notes:

- The most important compromise ZUN has made for this project, is that he's creating an opportunity for people to be introduced to Touhou from fan games that necessarily contain fanon cliches and high budget voice acting. Back at the time of the Musou Kakyou "Touhou Animation Project" controversy, one of his major points of contention was that by employing high-profile voice actresses, fan works run the risk of making people mistake them for official works and think those were the official voices of Touhou characters.

- Details in the trailer (please use the Mediascape site for reference):

1) At 19 seconds, it says 今後も東方同人タイトルが続々参戦!

The particle や implies there will be more titles other than Touhou. Here the wording of the trailer differed from the text of their announcement. That's why I think they have plans for publishing non-Touhou doujin games.

2) The trailer on their site has a new segment at the end. It shows a mock dialog between Sony Computer Entertainment and ZUN where they exchanged some greetings, which ended with this:

Quote
SCEJA: ZUN-san, you should also release [your games]!
ZUN: If I have the free [time/energy/etc] (laughter)

Will the official games be ported? He gave a typical non-answer.

Voices are actually pretty rare in these fan games, aren't they? The only one I can think of is Koumajou Densetsu II, which made a pretty big deal of it. This is unlike animation, which just sounds weird without voices.

One of the games that flashed by in the trailer was "冥宮惑星 desParaiso", which is one of Platine Dispositif's games. For the unaware, all of their games use original characters.

Both Sky Arena and Mysterious Gensokyo happen to have voice acting. Sky Arena uses cheap amateur seiyuu, which is the norm for doujin games. The Mysterious Gensokyo series has a pro seiyuu lineup that might be more expensive than Koumajou Densetsu.

One of the games that flashed by in the trailer was "冥宮惑星 desParaiso", which is one of Platine Dispositif's games. For the unaware, all of their games use original characters.
Good catch. It's the only non-Touhou game in the trailer, but its presence is telling enough.

(Whose idea is it to hide these things in the trailer?)

So the real story here is "ZUN launches a doujin game publisher on PlayStation".

So basically the same type of answer he gave us during the AWA panel when I asked him about the Steam rumor.

Well, this is a step in one direction. It's just a pain to make a JP PSN account.

Does anyone know if you can play the downloaded Japanese games on another region's account like US or EU?

A twitter update from Aqua Style (collected (http://blog.livedoor.jp/tohomemory/archives/39991140.html) by Touhou Memory) indicates that they are also still weighing their options without a concrete plan on porting which game to which platform. The trailer only features Mysterious Gensokyo 3 because it's their current flagship title.

Aqua Style wasn't even the only involved developer to make such a statement. The project is still in a super early stage, eh? I hope they can make their moves before the hype die down.

I looked it up. Some better known members of the Mysterious Gensokyo cast:

Satomi Satō (Reimu, Letty, Yuyuko)
Yōko Hisaka (Marisa, Mokou, Eiki)
Madoka Yonezawa (Sanae, Patchouli)
Yui Sakakibara (Yukari, Tenshi, Komachi)
Omi Minami (Suwako, Meiling, Youmu)
Yukana (Kanako, Cirno, Hijiri)
Kaoru Mizuhashi (Sakuya, Nitori, Kasen)
Mariya Ise (Flandre, Utsuko)

Source: a comprehensive list of voice actors in Touhou fan works (http://imglf1.ph.126.net/_edfjWNu4s3m76wD2_IZRQ==/6608772968422063291.jpg)

As far as I know, the seiyuu industry's rules are: young seiyuu are always poorly paid - if they become popular, it just means the industry can exploit more from them; the only seiyuu who are well paid are veterans who have stayed at the top of the industry for a long time. Not very different from Japanese showbiz in general.

The Koumajou Densetsu cast has some bigger names.  On the other hand, Mysterious Gensokyo has a larger cast. I don't know enough to say which is more expensive, but Aqua Style might be able to save more costs since they reuse their assets over the expansion packs and updated versions.

A report (http://www.inside-games.jp/article/2014/09/05/80261.html) on the CEDEC 2014 panel attended by D.N.A.

For this panel, D.N.A. focused on the logistics of doujin games. Of particular note, he founded his own convention, Digital Game Expo (http://digigame-expo.org/), because there was a dearth of events dedicated to doujin games since the doujin software convention Pasoket was terminated in the early 2000s. While Comiket has the huge attendance number, its model is not suitable for games, which benefit from live demonstration and experience.

In terms of numbers, 97 circles and about 600 visitors attended last year's first Digi Game Expo; 11 circles and about 300 visitors attended this year's Retro Digi Game Expo. This November's event, hosting 150 circles, will be held on "AKIBA_SQUARE" (http://www.udx-akibasquare.jp/index.php?pg=facilities), which is the exhibition floor of the UDX building in Akihabara.

First, ZUN retweeted D.N.A.'s tweet, about Digital Games Expo (http://digigame-expo.org/), a new doujin/indie game convention in Tokyo's Ota Ward that D.N.A. will host in November 17. He didn't directly say it, but ZUN is such good friends with D.N.A., he will absolutely attend this con.

Aquastyle did a video stream, and the lovely Touhou Memory captured it (1 (http://blog.livedoor.jp/tohomemory/archives/40175881.html), 2 (http://blog.livedoor.jp/tohomemory/archives/40176092.html)),

According to Touhou Memory, the important points are:

They said they will be porting Mysterious Gensokyo 3 to PlayStation Vita. You'll be able to import your PC saves into the game.

They surveyed the viewers about their hardware, and got the following results:

Do you own a PS4? Yes: 7.5%; No: 92.5%
Do you own a PSVita? Yes: 39.8%; No: 60.2%
Do you own a 3DS? Yes: 62.5%; No: 37.5%

Note that this is an audience that care about Aquastyle's doujin games enough to watch a midnight stream. Yeah, that's pretty much where things are in Japan.

Egads, I've been bugging rockin' android to localize that game for ages but no dice. Hopefully being on the psn will give em more incentive.
That said seeing Touhou on the psn, localized or not is awsome, Too bad labyrinth of Touhou isn't there too.  I wonder why Fushigi 3 only and not the series or the first game, I also wonder if making a fan translation will be easier for the psn version since it will be coded differently and HOPEFULLY less unhackable.

If anything, it'd be more unhackable, since you'd have to hack not only the game itself but also the Sony firmware.

Thanks again for keeping tab on their site!

The site has been updated with a summary of the project's purpose, and a list of participating doujin circles (only the 3 announced circles now).

Information gleamed from the update:

Page 1: The project will port original doujin games and Touhou fan games to PlayStation consoles. No mention of the official Touhou games.

Page 2: They have more Touhou circles under their wings.

Page 3: The development will primarily be conducted by the circles themselves, with technical support from their company MediaScape, Sony Computer Entertainment, and knowledge exchange among the circles.

Page 4: Original games will also be part of the project.

Other than direct confirmation of original games, the info about how the ports will be handled is the most important new info. Sony is serious about cultivating an indie game ecosystem in Japan. This requires them to teach the developers how to develop on consoles.

If anything, it'd be more unhackable, since you'd have to hack not only the game itself but also the Sony firmware.

I was under the impression that people have already done so with the vita, and I know they have with the psp, but mayb eI'm incorrect with the vita. Even if that was not the case though, I would agree that hoping such would be silly except for the fact that fushigi has been attempted to be hacked by people who have proven to successfully hack other touhou fangames for translation purposes, and were unable to do so in a workable manner (like they kinda sorta could but translating had so many quirks and problems they gave up if I understand correctly). I mean simply that the ratio of hard-core/soft-code, format, whatever...anything, just might (MIGHT, not saying it's probable, but I'm crossing my fingers) coincidentally be more "hack friendly" in a psn version.

edit: I just used a tome of reincarnation on my hina and now, even though I never used a single hp gem or hp level up bonus on her... her hp is horribad. like... half of patchy's... wdf?!

Further details from Famitsu.com:
http://www.famitsu.com/news/201412/18068176.html

The project is now named "Play,Doujin!", with a new URL:
http://playdoujin.mediascape.co.jp/

A fourth title has been announced: "Gensou no Rondo" by CUBETYPE.

Two Vita themes are released at the PS Store, each at JPY 432, one for Gensou no Rondo, the other being 幻想郷四季・冬 "Four Seasons of Gensokyo - Winter". The latter is part of a series to be released over a year, featuring contributions from fan artists.

At present, the two RPG titles are supposed to be released on Vita, while Gensou no Rondo will be for PS4. The platform of Sky Arena is still undetermined.

Well, from a technical perspective, it's only natural to forego supporting PS3, due to how difficult it is to develop for. However, the adoption rate of PS4 in Japan is... still far from optimistic.

Why would Touhou clash with Nintendo's cutesy image?  They have non-cutesy games like Zelda, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, etc., all of which make Touhou super family friendly.  In fact, Nintendo even owns games like Fatal Frame (they co-own it) and Eternal Darkness, both of which are absolutely against their cutesy image.

Um on one hand... i can see why you say this... the girls like to drink sake, but in game they don't mention it/drink it. However i can think of countless reasons that clash with that statement.

1- Touhou characters designs are cute, they don't have neither gore or horror
2- The stories are quite a deep mythological meaning/references ( if you search for them, such as PCB or HM )
3- It has a big and dedicaded fanbase ( ESPECIALY  Japan ) which would in the long run and in a marketing standpoint increase both Touhou's popularity and Nintendo's sales
4- etc

Just about every ending involves Reimu & co. having a drink with the "villain" and making peace. Then there's Yuugi, (who is "only playing around woth you, her sake NOT EVEN DROP" =) ), and Suika whose gourd produces endless sake and who is pretty much perma-drunk... Come to think of it, aren't Reimu & co. underaged drinkers? And then there's the "legal drinking age" message at the end of most games. So...... yeah, there's a lot of references to this sort of stuff in the games. =)

I don't think ZUN would be the kind to compromise the contents of his game because some Big Company is telling him to make changes to them, either....

The point is that Touhou's concept as a whole does not clash with Nintendo's policy, considering that, as I said before, the latter owns series such as Fatal Frame (they co-own it) and Eternal Darkness, both of which make it look like child's play.

And while Nintendo of America has issues with more mature stuff in their games, Nintendo of Japan has lesser issues with them.  The original Mario Kart, for example, has Peach and Bowser drink champagne in the Japanese version when they get first place.
http://youtu.be/S-Nn0BeMBgQ

And in the Japanese version of Wario Land 2, the transformation Crazy Wario is Drunk Wario, as the penguins that threw balls at him in the English version splash him with beer instead.

That's been a question of mine for a while, too, and all I can say is that the PC remains the gold standard of indie/doujin development. After all, the groups that release their games would certainly gain more publicity/profits/whatever if they reach out to the platform of the series they're making derivates of.

It seems at some unknown time, they have removed all the profiles of Play,Doujin! games from both the new page and the old ZUN X PS page.

The page also has an apology for terminating sales of the Gensou no Rondo PS Vita theme, leaving the Gensokyo winter theme as the only product on the page.

I don't know what all that means, but it gives the impression that certain things were not going as smoothly as they expected.

I genuinely hope this had nothing to do with the TSSB incident, because something very wrong is happening if that is indeed the case. However, in my opinion, if the Play,Doujin! campaign is actually called off most fans wouldn't miss anything as the only thing that might be lost is the extra bit of publicity Touhou Project would gain from having fangames on PlayStation.

They announced they were suspending the distribution of the Gensou no Ronde theme in a Dec 22 tweet (https://twitter.com/PlayDoujin/status/546967432347127808), only 4 days after its release. Their page for the theme still exists (http://playdoujin.mediascape.co.jp/product/cub-t-grd/), but the product itself has been removed from PlayStation Store.

On reflection (with the help of web.archive.org), I think I got the official Play,Doujin site and other sources mixed up. They have never had any profiles for specific games on their site so far, and the only trouble has been with Gensou no Ronde. Sorry for the false alarm.

It seems like the reason why Genso no Ronde got taken down was due to a complaint by Senko no Ronde's developer G.rev. I guess they objected to something so clearly lifting their game design, so they took all that down while a deal was worked out. The game is now back on track and the theme has returned to the store.
Title: Re: Touhou fan games will appear on PlayStation 4 and Vita

Tohomemory has looked (http://blog.livedoor.jp/tohomemory/archives/42519821.html) at G.rev's press release PDF. According to the file:

1. On Dec 19, 2014, G.rev was informed of the Gensou no Ronde PS Vita theme. On Dec 22, they filed a complaint at Mediascape claiming it has infringed their trademark "Senkou no Ronde".

2. On the same day, Mediascape replied, expressing the wish to suspend the theme and negotiate with G.rev, which G.rev accepted.

3. The negotiation commenced on another day between representatives of G.rev and Mediascape, and the developers of Gensou no Ronde. The end results are: the PC version of Gensou no Ronde (which has already been released as a doujin software) will cease production; a G.rev signed a licensing contract, granting them permission to release Gensou no Ronde on PlayStation platforms.

4. The licensing contract is signed in January 2015.

On twitter, Ruw said (https://twitter.com/Ruw/status/560336673125310464) whether similarly sounding names constitute trademark infringement is surprisingly difficult to determine, with precedents for both sides.

So the moment they start the business, they are immediately taught a lesson that the world of companies have different rules. The way things are going, I don't think "Mysterious Gensokyo" will be able keep the name.

To be more serious, this means they will have to be much more careful in approaching games that contain too overt references to other properties.

EDIT:
The most important compromise ZUN has made for this project, is that he's creating an opportunity for people to be introduced to Touhou from fan games that necessarily contain fanon cliches and high budget voice acting. Back at the time of the Musou Kakyou "Touhou Animation Project" controversy, one of his major points of contention was that by employing high-profile voice actresses, fan works run the risk of making people mistake them for official works and think those were the official voices of Touhou characters.
A small correction about my earlier post.

ZUN discussed the Musou Kakyou problem in a blog post (http://kourindou.exblog.jp/9178184/). According to this post, ZUN's editor (in all likelihood, that's Mr. Okonogi) informed ZUN about the existence of Musou Kakyou, and voiced his concern that their use of well-known voice actors may cause confusion. ZUN paraphrased what the editor told him, but expressed no opinion whatsoever about the use of voice actors.

I think ZUN's stance in this blog post is that he believed the editor's concern about voice acting makes sense, but he was not going to actually put up rules about it.

So you're basically saying the game is now a PS4 exclusive??? Are these the steps towards the commercialization of Touhou many of us fear would happen? As much as I'd like to see the series gain more popularity, letting the corporate world pull the strings is not the best idea.

This also brings up an interesting fact. Doujin games were meant to stay low-profile. Once they start spreading beyond fans and circles things might get messy, like what happened here. I think this might be one of the prime reasons for ZUN not allowing distribution of fangames outside certain distribution channels.
Title: Re: Touhou fan games will appear on PlayStation 4 and Vita
Post by: cuc on January 28, 2015, 04:14:41 pm
First, this is a wholly unintended consequence due to threat of legal action. Unless G.rev's complaint involves things other than the game title, it's easy to sidestep by renaming the game, although they've opted to settle with a license instead.

Second, a part of Touhou has gone commercial since ZUN started writing CoLA. Mind that those books are all published via commercial channels. It's the games (and some CD) part that has stayed doujin, and for all we know, will stay doujin. Just today, he said he'd "hate" to release his games on PS console.

Third, the true implication of this case is it shows turning doujin games that are liberal with references into proper console releases can be a business full of legal landmines, and ZUN's merry friends are not as prepared as they thought.

[...] turning doujin games that are liberal with references into proper console releases can be a business full of legal landmines [...]

You couldn't have said that any better. The more I think about this, the more I've noticed that almost all Touhou fangames are derived from some other franchise. Technically that infringes on certain property rights, but it looks like nobody takes action since few people know about these games in the first place. It's only when these games get noticed by "big business" that things start getting complicated.
Title: Re: Touhou fan games will appear on PlayStation 4 and Vita

A big problem with larger companies is the fact that once noticed they are more likely to try and take action, they have a mind to protect their copyright even if they cant win in court. If I remember correctly by law (not sure if Japan has the same issue) if a product name becomes to common (Like the word Coke) the company could lose their copyright to it and then everyone can use it. However I'm not sure if this could be applied to games but it seems pretty common for "clones" (especially with Mobile Games), I've said before that gameplay mechanics can't be copyrighted but who knows how long that could last.
Title: Re: Touhou fan games will appear on PlayStation 4 and Vita
Post by: Firestorm29 on January 28, 2015, 11:09:48 pm
I doubt being able to copyright or trademark game mechanics or design will come along for a long time or ever. I think it'll boil down to having the same or too simular code, and that isn't east to do. Plus, usually clones are ID'd by the game they are cloning.

Probably just a fight over the name, that's all.

G.rev CEO Hiroyuki Maruyama has posted a blog post (http://www.grev.co.jp/blog/archives/584). It's pretty interesting. A summary:

G.rev has known about Gensou no Ronde a few years ago when it was released. Their stance on doujin software has always been one of "tacit approval as long as it was done as personal/fan activities, rather than as a legal person's commercial activities". They could no longer ignore the problem when Gensou no Ronde would become a PlayStation release by a corporate entity.

However, they intended to find a solution as quickly as possible, since they cannot afford the costs of legal actions. Moreover, they are sympathetic to Play,Doujin!'s goals, thus they made the choice of granting a license to the infringers of their trademark.

Maruyama said they feel a deep sense of danger towards the console game market and its developers. Since 2012, G.rev themselves have been unable to publish any games with their own IP, and have relied on contract work to survive. The small and medium sized developers around them have practially given up on developing console games.

10 years ago, there were still several college graduates who joined G.rev with the dream of making arcade games. A few years later, young students with such a dream no longer exist. It is possible that in 5 or 6 years, there won't be any student who dreams of making console games.

Maruyama said, they hope the Play,Doujin! programme can allow more amateur or semiprofessional creators to become pro developers. However the doujin culture has created a lot of legally grey areas. A bright future might be ahead of these amateur makers after these grey parts are removed. That's their thinking behind the license.

Aside from reminding us how making a console games as a small developer is an uphill battle in Japan, the important part is that they said they tolerate doujin games as long as they stay doujin, and they can't afford lawyers.

Minor note, but I think "legal person" is better interpreted as "corporate entity".

I'm still not entirely sure that G.rev can "license" that style of game, but that's a whole other can of worms.

G.rev's complaint was only about the game name, which sounds too similar to their own trademark, and Ruw's tweets also only mentioned this problem. I think the license is entirely for the "Senkou no Ronde" trademark.

Do you think this could cause issues for many other titles like Megamari or would it only become a issue for the ones getting on PSN?

Like G.rev has demonstrated, the entire billion-yen doujin business relies on an unspoken agreement (http://archive.wired.com/techbiz/media/magazine/15-11/ff_manga?currentPage=all) by the cultural industry that doujin creations will be tolerated, because they have nurtured both a loyal fan base and potential creators. Except for the comparatively few infamous cases where companies like Nintendo got litigation-happy, they won't do anything to doujin games. I'd say yes, it is only a problem for titles coming to PSN.

Game mechanics are generally difficult to patent. The legal problems doujin games may face should mostly be about names, likeness and music, which can all be changed.

Minor note, but I think "legal person" is better interpreted as "corporate entity".
/Scratches head while reading wikipedia

Well, yeah, I suppose it is highly unlikely for a sovereign country to use G.rev's characters for commercial purposes. Also religious or non-profit organizations are all "corporate entities".

Today's Dengeki PlayStation magazine (http://dengekionline.com/dps/new/) published an interview about Play,Doujin!. The interviewees are SCE's Akinari Ito, Mediscape's Ezaki and Oyamada, ZUN, Aquastyle's JYUNYA (Mysterious Gensokyo), and Cubetype's Yuro (Gensou no Ronde).

- Mediascape inquired ZUN about the idea in July of 2014, only two months prior to the announcement in September. They did announce it super early.

- How did ZUN feel about the idea? ZUN said he didn't know, but he felt if (the Touhou games are released on PlayStation) they'd become not very different from the numerous indie games available. He debated with himself for 2 or 3 hours, and arrived at a compromise: he can't start releasing his canonical Touhou games on PS consoles all of a sudden. He will wait and see the consumers' opinion.

- Ito investigated Touhou fan games, and decided on the three initial games himself (Mysterious Gensokyo, Genius of Sappheiros, and Sky Arena). He suggested to Ezaki and Oyamada "you must have these games".

- In the month following the announcement, Ezaki received over 10 mails (about the programme) every day.

- ZUN's picture used in the announcement trailer was taken in a haste, at the third pub during a drinking spree. Ezaki said they needed ZUN's face to show his approval.

- Ito said they originally wasn't going to announce the programme at the SCE conference. He thought that announcing it at the conference about SCE's support of indie developers would create a good sense of dissonance, generating more buzz, so he arranged for it.

- Oyamada knew Cubetype through his personal connection, and introduced them to the project.

- Cubetype's Gensou no Ronde is the furthest ahead in development, since it's being developed for PS4, which is not too different from a PC.

- ZUN asked the others about how they got started making Touhou fan games. Yuro got into the fandom by watching Touhou M-1 Grand Prix.

- JYUNYA first read about Touhou (the PC-98 games) about 15 years ago in a doujin game column of a game magazine. He later played the EoSD demo at a friend's home. He was not good at danmaku shooters, but EoSD made the difficulty more manageable. His love of the game led to his participation in the first Reitaisai.

(Note: JYUNYA was not the founder of Aquastyle. Before 2003, Aquastyle was called Aqua Studio, which dates back to around 1995. JYUNYA says in this interview his doujin activities started 12 years ago.

There are some fandom rumors that Aquastyle has always been an important and influential doujin game circle that even ZUN pays great respect to. As far as I can tell, these rumors are unfounded.)

EDIT:
The rest of the Dengeki interview is generally unimportant. ZUN actually mentioned that he started making doujin games because he hated his job as a commercial game developer. "In actuality, you don't have any freedom in making games in a game company," he said that about the appeal of doujin.

The most important info in this post is at the bottom.

I'm still not entirely sure that G.rev can "license" that style of game, but that's a whole other can of worms.
Correction to my post: the G.rev press release has mentioned both the trademark and copyright of Senkou no Ronde being infringed. I wonder if G.rev would make the copyright infringement claim alone, had the game's name be something other than Gensou no Ronde.

From the PD official site (http://playdoujin.mediascape.co.jp/media.html#m20150129den): by buying the Dengeki PlayStation magazine from the PS Reader Store (http://ebookstore.sony.jp/item/LT000031204000421948/), you can download an exclusive PS Vita theme featuring the 4 PD titles.

In the Weekly Famitsu magazine released (http://www.famitsu.com/news/201501/29070322.html) on the same day, there is another interview with ZUN, Ezaki, Oyamada and Ito. It is shorter, but contains more important information.

A funny side note: Dengeki uses the "indies" spelling (see my post (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,17617.msg1160282.html#msg1160282)), while Famitsu uses the "indie" spelling.

Another note: the article's sidebar refers to Genius of Sappheiros as "Touhou Soujin Engi V", which would be a seriously misleading name for a PS Vita version.

They started by discussing the purpose of the programme: to secure the future of doujin games. According to Ezaki, Windows-based doujin games have already plateaued. In 2013, SCE launched the "PlayStation Loves Indies" support programme for indie developers, and he thought this could be a way to revitalize doujin games.

From Ito's point of view, you cannot have doujin games without Touhou Project. So when ZUN's friend Ezaki and Oyamada approached him, he immediately recognized they have a common goal. What remained was to convince ZUN.

ZUN's reaction to SCE's offer was: "do they absolutely need my participation?" He thought he simply didn't have enough time (to do the work involved in porting Touhou). On the other hand, he has no problem giving them the permission for Touhou derivative games.

The interviewer asked ZUN why he was no longer against Touhou appearing on other platforms. ZUN said his change took place during the Indies Game Fest 2013 event at Tokyo Game Show. The event made he feel that on one hand, "it won't be long until indie games becomes everyone's favorite thing", and on the other hand, "doujin games does not have the future these things have".

(If you recall, he went to Atlanta immediately after Tokyo Game Show. Those two weeks must be unforgettable for him.)

ZUN will not oversee the PD games. (That is to say, he would not request any changes to make the games conform to canon better.)

Regarding technical support for developers, Ezaki said they will facilitate knowledge sharing through measures like an (internal) wiki.

When discussing the freedom developers can enjoy, Ito put things into a new perspective by saying "Touhou is the only permission Play,Doujin has for derivative games at present", and SCE would provide as much support as possible to enable developers for content they need. In other words, their long-term plan is to obtain licenses to publish fan games for other IPs.

So for their long term goal we could get fan games of type moon games or square enixand other things that are similar, am I correct in thinking this? Just trying to understand what they fully mean.

Funny that ZUN and Fumio mentioned that it's best to use the translations in the Western Touhou Wiki for localization purposes.  :)
Guess it's time for us to do something to help them directly?

From what I know about the game localization business, and from the general context of the interview, that particular conversation is basically saying "we know zilch about how localization works, let's just have some idle thoughts for the moment".

Updating the interview information is on my to-do list. My to-do list moves slowly.

I can see why they're not too certain with it. Even official localization company took some liberties or picked the easy way out with the translations into English, and end-up losing some contexts or the interesting parts in the original. Though they sometimes made up some funny stuff to improvise. From what I know, it's apparent in recent games like GG Xrd, and even old NISA or Atlus games.
And their "quality checks" are more often just skimming of scripts to boot.
Title: Re: Touhou fan games will appear on PlayStation 4 and Vita

Localization is always going to be a subjective thing. Like, I still don't like how certain lines are translated in the official games, but I can't really change them because they're just stylistic preferences. Also, what half of the people are going to think is "interesting", the other half are going to find confusing, and so forth.

As for quality checks, they need to be approached with the same care (or even more so) than the amount used in the draft's creation. The problem comes down to time, for the most part.

I still haven't get to translating stuff from the extended interview, but we have an update.

CUBETYPE is calling (https://twitter.com/yuropu/status/565504604935577602) for players to participate in a closed beta test for Gensou no Ronde. The test will be performed using PCs rather than real PS4s.

According to their site, the PS4 version of the game will be a great update over the PC version, with full-HD graphics, new characters, and gameplay and balance update.

They also claimed the termination of the PC version is not a great loss, as they've practically stopped supporting the game.

Aquastyle has made some announcement of an announcement. Their PS Vita game is now simply called "Mysterious Gensokyo", without a number or subtitle. They will announce it formally in a stream on April 3.

Instead of a straight port of Mysterious Gensokyo 3 PLUS, new content will be added to this game.

EDIT:
Aquastyle has released an official PS Vita theme. Buy it here (https://store.playstation.com/#!/ja-jp/cid=JP0704-PCSG00642_00-0000000000000002?EMCID=jGMpsstoretwitter_20150410_toho).

The game's announcement stream has been delayed to April 10, 13:00 UTC:

At Reitaisai 12 (May 10), there will be a segment called "Toho Game Show", which will showcase mainstream commercial games with Touhou content, namely, arcade rhythm games with Touhou tracks (Bemani games, Taiko no Tatsujin, etc), and Play,Doujin! games.

The Toho Game Show website has been updated (http://reitaisai.com/rts12/toho-game-show) with the Play,Doujin! game list. Visitors will be able to try out at least three games:

* Fushigi no Gensokyo -The Tower of Desire- for PS Vita
* Touhou Soushin Engi V for PS Vita
* Gensou no Ronde for PS4

As previously hinted in the Famitsu interview, they are really going to call the Genius of Sappheiros port "Touhou Soushin Engi V". Good luck telling buyers there are not 4 more games before that!

What? And I thought that Toho Game Show part was an April Fools joke. I knew the Bemani collaboration is legit, but this is a pleasant surprise indeed.

And about the name, just tell them that the V stands for "Vita" version.

"Genius of Sappheiros" is the English subtitle. The main title is "Touhou Soushin Engi", roughly "Eastern Origin Story of the Azure God". As we all know, the PC version had been updated through the expansion pack "Lingering Summer Heat" and the rebalanced version "Weekend". They could have given the PS Vita port a similar version name.

Ahh, right, nevermind.  Apologies.  I hear those names so much I treat em like the original ones.  Sort of like (to use an official game as an example) PCB's proper name is "Touhou Youyoumu", etc, yes?

Either way, while I don't have a PS4 or Vita or current plans to get either, it's cool to know they're coming to the consoles anyway.

Same here... I mean I'd normally think it a waste of time to voice such wishes given how long Touhou has not had any english releases but now that it's starting at playism, and the fact that these will be on the vita, and distributed commercially...

I mean it's like certain barriers are finally being broken, soo.. Somehow it feels less hopeless to wish such a thing now.

That and I really really wanna play fushigi no gensokyou in english =P

PlayStation Store page:

The game costs JPY 3000, and is a 261MB download.

On another note, it has received a CERO rating of Grade B (for 12 years old and above), with a content symbol for "sexual content".

It will be interesting to watch which Touhou games will end up with "sexual content", and which ones will get "alcohol and smoking".

Physical cartridges are not region-locked, Vita memory cards are account-locked, but you can choose your region when you set it up. You cannot access the PS Store in another region, so you will have to set up a Japanese account if you want to get digital versions.

No problem is there are physical versions though.

44 claimed results on PS Store Jp (https://store.playstation.com/#!/ja-jp/%E6%A4%9C%E7%B4%A2/f=^%E6%9D%B1%E6%96%B9%7Cbucket~games)   .They are up to 46 ,including Themes and Bgms, if you browse  "Mistery of Gensokyo/Fushigi no Gensokyo- Tower of Desires " and see in the lower corner two downloadable solid expansions which are two: one with Aya,Momiji and Youkai Mountain and the wider other with Futo,Taoists and the recent gensokyo up to Urban Legends in Limbo.

For a parting note an advice to select your year-month-day to prove you are 18+...An Average Rating of 12+...I am Puzzled as someone else here has pointed out before and would sure love to see pushier games handled in this way.

Not sure if Iím posting this in the right thread but it looks like a Nintendo Switch version for Touhou Genso Wanderer has been announced. Seems like PS4 wonít stay the only console with Touhou fangames on it.

Even better, the Switch is region-free. Anyone can get this game.

To call this an announcement is going too far and I think the MNN writer overstepped. The three main points of the tweet are "the Switch hardware is very interesting and I wanted to see a FushiGen at-home and on-the-go"; "Because I only just started tinkering for inspection purposes please note there might not be a test display at Reitaisai"; and the last line is "Everything from here on is undecided / we have no plans", for cripes' sake. This is absolutely not an announcement of anything besides that they seem to have a dev kit.

In the previous tweet announcing their plans for the Reitaisai booth (the Sakuya DLC and maybe a Switch demo) they also note that there are no plans for sale, at least as of yet.

I imagine that them announcing this and any potential demo at Retaisai is simply gauging interest, since in the past Aquasoft has released their games with I imagine a not inconsiderable amount of support and financial backing from the Play Doujin! platform. As it wouldn't be a option if they put anything on the switch, they'd have to seek a different investor. I can't help but wonder if they're already in talks with Nippon Ichi over that, as they've already partnered with the american branch in the past, and the company seems interested in having a presence on the switch.

But again, I imagine it's only talks and interest gauging right now, and it's entirely possible they won't go anywhere.

Just like my hopes for us getting Reloaded localized after the base game got such a lukewarm reception

Nice to have that cleared up. I only found out about this news recently and I'm just currently in disbelief that it would be this quick for PlayDoujin to suddenly go off onto another system after this deal that seems pretty exclusive with Sony.

I will say though with how the Vita is somewhat on the way out among the Switch currently doing well I would probably expect that the Switch might be an option but there has to be way more legal stuff to go through to ensure that this doesn't breach anything with Sony or the PlayDoujin stuff as well. It'd be cool to see but right now it's too soon. (Also as an owner of of a PS4, Vita and Switch I feel this isn't too detrimental for me though I wouldn't mind seeing Switch ports since my Vita currently has some nasty scratches on it).

I actually had a chance to ask D.N.A. about this and it seems like PlayDoujin isn't a Sony-exclusive publisher or anything, they were just the easiest ones to work with. If a Switch version can be made, it seems likely to go through.

Wow, it's actually happened! Doujin games have come a really long way~
Still curious why NSIA always releases older games though (not really a bad thing as long as they don't translate Rumia as Lumia again....)

... this is why I feel conflicted... I want to support the touhou games that come out but NSIA is morons when it comes to localization. This is why I will promote Scarlet curiosity till my death, Xseed did a much better job even if the game isn't very challenging. We have two wikis they can use for reference. This kinda proves ZUN's point on a localization team even if it was part joking, but no one can do a better job than the fans. well.... Fire emblem fates proved that is true!~

Well Lumia reminds me of luminescence which is another word for moonlight which many of her attacks have moon in them.

Moon Sign "Moonlight Ray"
Darkness Sign "Dark Side of the Moon"

It's also worth noting that Lumia and Frandoll are the only two windows touhou characters we never got English names by ZUN for (because they never came back and EoSD didn't have the English names in it), so its kinda hard to actually see what he intended them to be.

I have only seen claims on Twitter so no hard evidence but allegedly, due to Scarlet Curiosity sales not living up to expectation, XSEED quits localising any more Touhou fangames.

People there also say that XSEED didn't even try to promote or advertise the game so that's why not many people know that it exists and buy it.

EDIT: Currently at NeoGAF, there is an extremely heated debate whether ZUN is selfish for not localizing official Touhou games.

I don't have a link handy, but I recall that ZUN is on interview-record as saying that he would continue making games even if no one bought them anymore. Looks like a fair number of people in that thread are trying to apply common/Western game dev economic standards to ZUN and Touhou when they're not congruous at all.

That thread is also being fairly cruel to the localized fangames. Bullet Ballet was rather clunky and unimpressive (visuals aside) but I absolutely love the Gensou Wanderer/Double Focus combo. Both are fantastic games in their own right.

God this is why I've been trying to promote this game as much as possible! Out of many of the fangames its the easiest for a newcomer to get into as it's not full of touhou memes and is decently close to the actual story without changing a characters personality (Only one story issue is that people wont know who they are, and people wont get why the story doesn't have major importance). I might actually make a point of this in my review now that my LP is done. There is so much people don't understand about this game so they misjudge it because of other fangames.

Sorry that makes me mad that they wont give us the numbers for sales and just say "it didn't do as well as we hoped". Plus wow the hate for touhou games in that place. Its like these people don't understand how huge getting publishers to do anything with touhou. I need to make notes for these to better explain it to others. Xseed really don't have to give up... how about publish some games people would be excited for, like puppet dance performance or Koumajou Densetsu. Now I'm not sure who I'm more disappointed in, Xseed or NSIA, at least NSIA is still selling them.

Agreed, they don't seem to know ZUN that well sadly.

BB was fun except for its broken multiplayer but GW/DF is actually a lot of fun and my favorite of the ones NSIA has released so far.

Publishers likely cannot give sales data in the granularity that you'd like to hear, tbh. There's a reason you only hear very vague statements as to how much X or Y sells, like "oh, it's over a million shipped! [aggregated over all SKUs so we don't have to say how many of each actually sold]"

It's not nearly as simple as people like to make it out to be. You can't just Localize It And They Will Buy. Marketing is huge and costly and expensive and absolutely mandatory for modern sales of any sort, up to and including putting stuff on Steam.

Really, though, we've been having this argument since the dawn of Touhou's western fandom though and it's as pointless now as it was then. ZUN's entitled to do what he likes. People are allowed to think of it what they like. If he feels like putting the games up, he will.

*sigh Yeah... the funny thing about marketing is they could have at least tried a bit, did more youtube stuff. I actually got a few of my viewers to buy the game which made me very happy! Feels like I did my job right! As long as these games keep coming out in the JPN store at least I'll still play them.

Why spend time, effort, money, and whatever else it takes to "localize" your game when the fans are more than happy to do it themselves? Unlike some developers/publishers/etc ZUN doesn't encrypt the assets of his games. The official games all get translated to multiple languages by the community and it's not very difficult to purchase brand-new copies of them from Amazon at relatively low prices. All in all it seems like a lot of people in that thread are just complaining for the sake of complaining. So move along, let them act all entitled and all, and don't let them ruin the experience for you.

Thats very true! it's why it took so long to even get them on other platforms, theres that risk someone will mistake a NSIA copy as official Touhou games. (god I know someone out there thinks that...)

eh most people in the thread are on the side that ZUN can do whatever he wants.
My personal opinion is that it's "justified selfishness;" he doesn't localize or otherwise cater to the western fanbase simply because he'd rather make games. There's nothing wrong with that.
there's probably a better word to use than "selfishness" but I can't think of one right now.

i don't think the games would even sell enough for anyone to bother trying to localize/translate them.

i mean the playism release of DDC was as utterly barebones as you get in terms of cost (literally all they had to do was put out a tweet and a storefront page) and they still never bothered following up with any of the prior games or LoLK, or any fangames, or even so much as a blog post.

i don't know if it was because of the backlash due to lack of translation, a disagreement with ZUN, or what, but that was probably the best hope the games had of continued "official" releases and the fact there's been complete radio silence from playism on that front for two years almost now kind of leaves the hope of any further official release via western channels, much less localization to be utterly torpedoed. As for the fangame front - it seems they're finding something of a home via this, but I can't help but wonder why, given how poor the choices for localization and the sales from what we've heard have been. No idea how NISA's doing, but I don't rightfully think we'll know until after burst battle comes out - they probably got enough data from their release of genso wanderer and double focus that we'll know if they have any intent of keeping this up then.

hopefully they bring tod reloaded over at least, that'd be nice.

this is kind of a super negative post but there's probably still hope on the fangame front. their advertising costs are probably really low, NISA is making a bigger push to raise awareness of them than XSEED did, and there's clearly a bet on NISA's end to try and leverage the usual willingness of niche audiences to pay more for a specific product that might pay off and make them, if not terribly profitable, at least a decent profit. but again, we should know for certain if it's worth their time after burst battle comes out and we see what their plans (if any) are with fangames from there.

Also, why aren't there any announcement for more games distributed on either Playism or Play,Doujin? It's really been a while since the former's last game, which is Marisa and Alice's Trap Power back in December.

Playism even made a poll long time ago about which game to distribute but nothing ever came to light.
