AAAAH! Dunban should be set after mainlining it over the weekend I hope. Everything else got a nice touch-up, too. Yay, better make-up! It should be fun to go from short skirt-wearing KD Youmu one day to tough-as-nails gentleman Dundun the next.

Excuse me, but crocs aren't appropriate anywhere. Making Dundun an agi-tank is the way to go, though.

Also I will be adopting Helvetica's spare 3DS and would like to start collecting friend codes if it so pleases anyone. I will probably spend a few hours puzzling over its lack of grey brickiness and how the graphics are not all dot-matrixy.

So it's in two weeks or something but otakon's still slacking when it comes to announcing musical guests.  Unless the only one we're getting this year is ALTIMA.

Something to keep in mind about Otakon is the convention center is right off the water, so not only will it be 90 degrees outside, it'll be super humid as well.

That was the same year I cosplayed KD Meiling which I stupidly made out of twill. It was also the same year I got 40 hours of work in before 3 o'clock on a Thursday and hopped aboard a cramped train for Balty an hour later, coasting into town at OMG o'clock.  I spent the majority of the con in a haze and/or one unfortunate situation or another.

WORTH IT.

I must be the only person going who doesn't feel super hyped up. Maybe living like 20 minutes away has something to do with it.

...Maybe I should go watch one of the Orioles games while I'm there~

Oh oh, or I could try and get tickets to the Ravens/49ers game that Thursday night! That could be a fun way to start the weekend!

Looks like the panel's at 4:30 PM on Saturday. With a photoshoot running from 3:00 to 4:00, that's going to make for some interesting lining up.

I have to admit that I'm super relieved that the panel (a) isn't on Sunday and (b) won't interfere with the Saturday evening dinner, though. Not gonna complain!

Because I am paranoid about this...I think I'll mention it here as well. I guess you could call this a 'traffic and congestion alerts' post for events near the convention center for the weekend.

Thursday - Sunday:

-Restaurant Week in Baltimore. A lot of places will be having lunch and dinner specials. Might be nice to take advantage of them, but be aware that there *might* be a slightly increase in volume as a result. Personal Prediction: Negligible - Minor Impact

Thursday:

-Ravens vs 49ers preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium at 7:30pm. Given this is the first preseason game, I expect this game to draw a *very* large crowd. The stadium can hold up to 71k...I don't expect that many people, but it's quite likely that at least 50k will be there. Light Rail, Metro and buses are bound to be extremely congested from 5pm to 8pm and 11pm to Midnight. Traffic should similarly be impacted around the same times. Parking will be probably be sparse around the stadium (which includes the garages near the convention center) from 7pm to 11pm. Be advised to arrive early if you're coming on Thursday. Personal Prediction: Moderate - Major  Impact

Friday:

-Ravens/49ers open practice at M&T Bank Stadium at 1pm. This is the final open practice for the Ravens and given the 28k draw back on the open practice on July 28th, it is highly likely that number will be the baseline. As such, if you're coming by car, expect some slowing around Baltimore and congestion in Baltimore by roughly noon. Light Rail and Metro will also see a slightly increase in volume, but it shouldn't be *too* bad. On its own, this probably would only warrant a Minor to Moderate Impact but there's also a...

-Orioles/Cardinals game at 7:05pm. If you're driving between roughly 4pm and 7pm, traffic will probably be a nightmare. People will probably be trying to leave from the practice and others will be trying to get to the Orioles game. If you plan on parking at this point, you'll be looking quite far away for a spot. Perhaps near Little Italy is worth a go. This Friday night game is probably going to be a sell out for a few reasons. First off, the Orioles are doing fantastic and will likely be in either 1st or 2nd place by the time of this game. Next, this game will honor the 60th anniversary of the team being in Baltimore, meaning a lot of Hall of Famers will be at the game for the celebrations. Finally, it's Friday night. Friday night games *always* draw well. Personal Prediction: Major Impact

Saturday:

-Orioles/Cardinals game at 4:05pm. Honestly, this shouldn't be an issue for most people. I only mention it because you get a cowboy hat if you go to the game. For real. I personally kind of want to buy a ticket just so I get one myself. Personal Prediction: Negligible - Minor Impact

Sunday:

-Orioles/Cardinals game at 1:35pm. This, on the other hand, may cause some stress for those *leaving*. The game will probably conclude around 4pm, so expect traffic leaving Baltimore (both by transit and car) to be especially congested from both outbound ballpark and Otakon traffic from then to roughly an hour after the game. It shouldn't be *too* bad, but bad timing could add 30 minutes to an hour to your commute. Awareness is the key. Personal Prediction: Minor - Moderate Impact

So there you have it. Thrusday Evening/Night and Friday from noon to evening can be expected to be the worst inbound times and Sunday Afternoon also has potential to be a bad outbound time. Expect the best, but always plan for the worst.

Does anyone know if Autographs will be ticketed this year? I'm thinking of going down on the first train Saturday for Saori Hayami's panel and trying for a sign, but if it's ticketed then I probably shouldn't even bother.
And then maybe doing the dinner before taking the train back.

This  (http://www.otakon.com/guests/autographs.asp) and this  (http://www.otakon.com/policies.asp#autographs)are what I could find on Otakon's website regarding autographs.

Weather still looks like it'll mild if not rainy. I'll take it over 100 degree temps any day. On the flipside, AMV Hell 7 is debuting at Otakon on Friday night just in case you're feeling nostalgic for your college's anime club end-of-the-year meeting.

Same. No 3 hour lines for LTE.

I've always wondered why cons don't do this anymore. Aside from the "I never got my badge in the mail!" reason, it'd surely speed up the process of registering like thousands of people arriving at the same time.

Same, was freaking out when I woke up at 5:30am and heard the line already wrapped around the BCC. Our first reaction to hearing this news was to grab the nearest drink, pour liquor in it, and throw our shoes on and run out in our PJs. We got super lucky and managed to cut to the front of the line and got our badge at ~8:30am.

Ah yes you and me are alike. As scummy as it may be (and I feel scummy for it) it's hilariously easy to cut in line for anime cons.
We weren't even trying to cut, there was just a big gap in the line around one of the doors and me and two of my roommies were standing around waiting for the rest of our entourage to catch up (we all ran out the door screaming FEND FOR YOURSELVES), and the line just accepted us as its own. Someone around us got Dunkin Donuts and offered us some of them. Weeaboos may have their problems but we stand in solidarity with each other and we support our own and spirits were high (at the time, but as the line dragged on I imagine morale took some lumps).

I understand the frustration, and I share it. This was awful. But it's the first Otakon I've ever been to that I've experienced such an unmitigated disaster (and I've been going faithfully with only one off year since 2005). I'm still having a blast and the group I'm with are all first-timers and they're already like OK SO THIS IS WHAT WE'RE DOING NEXT YEAR. This year's Otakon though has been pretty weak in some of the more traditionally strong areas, like the music guest is kinda lame and the video game hall is so barren and empty. They stuck the rave in an actual hall this year though which was a great move. Having the rave upstairs was awful and it caused so many congestion issues. I wonder if a lot of the strain and somewhat weaker presentation is from the overtaxation from having gone all out last year with both the 20th anniversary con, the Jam Project concert, and the completely unnecessary Otakon Vegas.

The registration line issues are due to Otakon not having the same volume of access to BCC technical resources as in previous years. Blame this one on the BCC.

Can anyone post out the list of games mentioned at the Touhou panel? I've taken the liberty of asking N-Forza to pick up the sequel to Dat Youmu Game but a lot of other games that were brought up were forgotten in the hustle and bustle of the con.

(Also, I'm tossing a recommendation to add the Fantasy Maiden Wars series to the RPG / Strategy list. Clone of Super Robot Wars games and the PV for the newest one looks amaaaaaazing)

Good con though. I'm pissed my email bugged out on me, causing me to not realize I won tickets to the Yoshiki concert.

Yeah totes thinking of an alternate route. 3 bits of stop-and-go before leaving MD. Accident in DE just before the bridge that slowed traffic for miles, 12 straight miles of the same crap in NJ, then backup from the start of NY through the Tappan Zee. Forget it.

Can't I be given a chance to take a break before going back to work? Lots of cool stuff happened and- I AM at work?!

Yeah you shoulda hit me up for a steer around the traffic bro, I'd route you through West fucking Philly and then you can tell me how much Jersey sucks in comparison :V  Preemptive 1918 whatever the fuck that means but it's used by NYC to teabag Bahstin types so 1918!

Turnpike traffic actually wasn't as bad by the time we went up it - the drag from 7 to 8 was actually fast moving for what things are.  By next Otakon they should be done with the Turnpike construction and that should extend the split of the car/truck lanes all the way to exit 6, which I believe is the PA Turnpike.  That'll let trucks off onto 76, which will cut down on traffic elsewhere and allow easier exfiltration from Six Flags as well.

Man, it's always fun seeing you crezzy bastiches.  Sorry we couldn't hang more, damnable circumstances, but I know peoples are going to MAGfest and let's hang out get trashed and not go to actual programming at Katsucon!

Hey, I did admit last night on IRC that the NJT (and GSP and I-95 in Merryland) were better than expected when I went through. Truth be told, the 13 miles of the Mass Pike that I traveled was the worst part of the trip, because I wasn't expecting it to be the mess that it was and I never figured out why traffic was so bad.
Title: Re: OTAKON 2014 - AUGUST 8-10 - ALL CAPS EDITION
Post by: Reddyne on August 11, 2014, 02:17:41 PM
There was definitely a good bit of traffic flux. The accident in DE looked like it had happened about 30-60 minutes before we drove through there, so there was enough time to get the car and tow truck to the side of the road, but not enough time for the road to clear up. NJ was fine with the exception of that long band of traffic around 7 or 8 (yo holmes) which was bad for nearly a full hour. Meanwhile, MA was a bit busier than usual for a Sunday, but the roads were clear at 10-11 after Kilga had mucked through whatever had happened. At least NJ traffic netted a glimpse of a Toyota MR2 which led to a dangerous game of  taking pictures with one hand on the cell phone cam while clutching the wheel in the other while watching the wrong lane in stop-and-go traffic.

Also aw yeah MAGfest. Already giving the panel application form a look-see in case it is best for me to take the helm and will be checking to see whose interested in going/participating later today, assuming I can remain conscious.

Title: Re: OTAKON 2014 - AUGUST 8-10 - ALL CAPS EDITION
Post by: Reddyne on August 11, 2014, 03:19:22 PM
Pretty much. It would be similar in structure and spirit with more of a focus on the games, fan games, and music since that seems to be what MAGfest seems to be about. Print works and doujins would get an honorable mention, but it doesn't fit with the rest as much. Bringing in either someone associated with Touhou Tuesday or Gensokyo Radio would be a great fit but the panel could survive if no one from either could be made available. Unfortunately I don't know the crowd there as well so I don't know how privy they are to the series and general fandom. It may influence whether it's mostly an introduction to the series or just sort of basking in the glory of the more nuanced aspects of the fandom. Throwing four friends new to the series at Amapani and tallying the amount of curse words and insults that arise from the experience might make for some humor though.

Sometime or another I'll get around to talking about how awesome it was to be around all you guys again, how nice it was to meet some of you even if we didn't talk much, and how much I missed some who couldn't make it. :(

Are you considering a touhou panel at magfest?  It's certainly topical, given the sheer volume of arrange albums that exist...

Topical is one heck of an understatement imo. At its core, it's a game series with great music. It's like it and MAGFest were always meant to be together. That said...

Pretty much. It would be similar in structure and spirit with more of a focus on the games, fan games, and music since that seems to be what MAGfest seems to be about. Print works and doujins would get an honorable mention, but it doesn't fit with the rest as much. Sometime or another I'll get around to talking about how awesome it was to be around all you guys again, how nice it was to meet some of you even if we didn't talk much, and how much I missed some who couldn't make it. :(

...from the two years I've been there, there's certainly some people who know what Touhou is or have heard of it but it feels like Touhou a lot more of an unknown over at MAGFest. Given that this would be the first year (that I know of) with a Touhou panel, I'd probably lean towards making the panel more of an introduction to the series with secondary focus on the massive amount of arranges and possibly the fangames.

I'm still waiting for a Touhou panel to have a portion where the audience is given a song from the series (most likely something popular) and then are asked by the panelists to name different styles/genres of music...to which the panelists would play a short clip from an arrangement done in that style/genre. Might be a quick way to really show how dedicated the fanbase is when it comes to arranging Touhou music.

If nothing else, it'd be nice to have *some* sort of Touhou presence at MAGFest. I dunno, it just feels like the two would or should go well together and yet the closest thing to Touhou I've seen there is a few songs on the Sound Voltex machine. Which is great but...kind of disappointing in a way.

I think I finally feel ready to try an MG kit again (got an MG Strike Noir back in college but fucked up the screws so bad I couldn't finish the torso ;_;) since the HG Sinanju I got at Tekko turned out to be pretty complex. The Unicorn Banshee was tempting but grabbing the Freedom instead let me also get the Qubeley Papillon without dipping into my dinner reserve and my very first kit was the ungraded-but-roughly-HG 1/100 Justice so they'll make a nice pair. And I got a bonus just extra weapon-y thing for spending over $50 so that was cool.

The bunch of Fukutomi ones are for an personal mission idea I had the first night; I'm actually not up to the point that that team starts showing up in Yowamushi Pedal (though I like what I have watched and Onoda is a treasure which is why I picked up the cute one of him to round out a 3/$5 at one booth - they also had realy cute FE:A ones and Persona ones though), the Ren was me supporting the only Uta no Prince-sama I found in Artists Alley, and I couldn't pass up the cute Utena.

The Wasurenagusa!Kondou is actually official merch and from a prize at the otome panel at Tekko but I never got around to taking it out of my purse so the expanding pile of buttons just seemed like a good chance to get it out of there. :V

I'm pretty sure that Overcoat usually goes to MAGfest every year to atleast represent arecibo radio. Not sure how easy it would be for him to make time for a panel, but I'd imagine he probably could squeeze in.

Did he go last year? I know he went two years ago but I'm not sure if he was able to make it, being all west coast and all. I know he's REALLY BIG on Magfest tho. I wish I could go but I'm usually out of the state on winter break in Austin and I think this year it directly conflicts with Ohayocon (which is much closer, much less of a time commitment and above all, much cheaper).

Panel was great! I think this was the first Otakon panel (other than my absolute abortion of the very first Touhou panel at Otakon) I got to speak at :3 WAS AWESOME I WISH I HAD TIME TO GET MORE INVOLVED WITH IT :[

Overboat couldn't attend last year for money reasons, hence me balking at outright saying that he'd be a major contributor. Anyway, there will be a push for Touhou stuff at MAGFest and that might be another thread entirely.

Anyway, Blingee was giving me fits so go nuts with this on your own:

Looks like he didn't go last year due to it being expensive. :/ Dunno about this year, but you could ask him Tuesday I'd imagine. I'd like to visit something like Ohayocon or MAGFest myself if my studies don't get in the way (Which they tend to do >.>:)

That was pretty cool to see our dark overlord decked out in Nazrin gear. Wish I could have said "Hi", but Saturday was rather overloaded for me... @_@;

A tiny clever commander indeed :3

I know how you feel about overloaded tho T~T I didn't goto the Touhou dinner and I only went to the Saturday/Sunday shoots. As much as I love Otakon there's ALWAYS too much to do every time :[

The fatigue somehow hit me harder than things to do, though my main modus operandi was 'get loot, hang out with sl nerds' so i accomplished both

would've liked to hit the panel, but I was absolutely exhausted even at the shoot ><

I wasn't as much tired as there was just too much for me to do. It didn't help I wasted an hour flailing around the hotel room looking for my mouse ear on Saturday and ended up going back to the room twice to just get out of it for a bit to stop overheating. As much as I loved that cosplay it is NOT fun to wear when it's remotely warm outside.

I wanted to go to way more stuff and it ends up feeling like I did, like, nothing. And most of what I did do were just take pics at photoshoots. :V

(Fun fact: I took more pics at the Amnesia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amnesia_%28visual_novel%29) shoot on Sunday than I did at all of Tekko. Though you have to consider I took 2-3 shots a pose so it sorta works out to less.)

(I finally get to see my Kaguya cosplay.)

All the shoots were fun as always. I thank Kilga and company over and over again for organizing these events.

Strangely enough, my throat has been fine the entire time. Aside from some raspiness yesterday, I'm doing okay in that regard.

My tongue, on the other hand, feels like someone scrubbed it with sandpaper for an hour. No clue why. I certainly don't remember eating anything scorchingly hot recently.

This was my second con and my first time at Otakon and I had a good time.

I'm officially renaming conplague to conleg, because my legs are useless and I can barely sit or stand.
Yeah, I didn't get sick but my legs are still feeling sore along with my shoulders.

Anyway, I took a lot of pictures so here they are: http://kingneodymium.imgur.com/

QUBELEY PAPILLON

Details about pitfalls/things to look out for and seam fills required when available plzkthx.

I plan to build it and try my hand at a metallic paint job; apparently Vallejo has a metallic base; the rest is just mixing up the right turquoise/teal blend going on.

I'm officially renaming conplague to conleg, because my legs are useless and I can barely sit or stand.

THIS

My fuckin' knees throughout the entire con felt like they were wearing down.  I think I'm definitely getting old.

Although ironically enough despite horrible eating schedules and not at all nutritious options (PROTIP: the Sheraton has a lounge, GET ACCESS TO IT.  Full breakfast AND dinner, if it's like $20 per room you save SO much money on food) I somehow managed to lose 4 fucking pounds - 4 POUNDS - between Thursday AM and this AM.

Lotsa walking and standing maybe?  But still, the creakiness is now just fading.

#oldmeido

FYI hotel reg site opens up tomorrow at 9am. Link (http://registration3.experientevent.com/showOTA151/)

Previous years it had been hilariously easy to game the system to get next year's reg site, and for a brief period it was open but they locked it down this time. #conmeido already has a giant block of rooms, this is more for people looking to snag their own things. If you want your own room you better be hammering that site immediately because they tend to go VERY fast for the better hotels (Days Inn/Hilton/Hyatt).

Also Otakon '15 is July 24-26th.

idk I don't usually fuss with anything more complex than snap it together, slap the decals on and go. :V But yeah if anything really glaring sticks out at me I'll let you know.

I got home from errands at 7 last night. I fell asleep at 8 and only woke up to brush my teeth and get a drink. I then woke up at 6 this morning a little before the alarm went off. Considering I got an extra half-night's worth of sleep in (almost) a single go, Otakon is physically out of my system. Oh you poor dears with the conplague.  :ohdear:

Hello, and thank you for attending! That game is called AMaPaNi, named after the four playable characters. Since you've already found his thread, you can indeed request a copy from N-Forza if you like (he is how I got my copy).
