At some point in time, you'll be delighted if somebody makes a compliment about your costume. Being in a convention or not, we always do engage curiosities of others while we are in costumes.
What are some of your interesting compliments or encounters while you're in a Touhou costume? I'll start first.
A few local Touhou people I hang out with decided to come out and have a good time and celebrate my birthday. Four of us gathered at a mall in our costumes and started walking around. While checking out GameStop, this happened.
*a kid (<10) out of his curiosity walked towards one of us, who was cosplaying as Suika
Kid: Are you Touhou?
Suika: yeah, how do you know?
Kid: My brother has it on his computer.
This kid has future :)

I've had funny encounters while in Touhou cosplay. All related to gender. FYI: I'm a straight male crossplayer.
Here are a few short stories.
Heading back to the con, I was walking down the street in my Keine cosplay with some fellow cosplayers after dinner, a car slowed down and some guy tried to get my attention from the car's rear passenger quarter:
"Hey! Hey! Can I have your number?"
"Excuse me, what?"
"Holy shit, you're a dude!" and the car sped off.
Did I just get hit on?

In Sanae cosplay at a very small convention that I drove 10 hours to meet a friend, I was approached by two very timid young ladies.
"Excuse me...?"
"Yes?"
"Your costume, it's from Touhou, right?"
"Yes it is! I'm a shrine maiden."
"I told you!" "Okay you win both!"
"Both?" I ask.
"yourdressisveryprettybye!"
Kay, thanks!
(I'm assuming they were betting each other on what series my cosplay was from and what my gender is.)

In Sanae cosplay but a different con, while I was sitting down playing a game in the game room with a friend. (A side scrolling shmup which we kept joking about was totally going the wrong way and stuff), a rather carefree and smiley guy is walking past me and suddenly leans over ans asks:
"Whoa hey are you a guy or a girl?"
"Yep!"
"*thumbs up*"

On more than a few occasions I get this type of exchange:
"May/Can I take your picture?"
"Sure."
"Whoa! You're a guy?!"
"That I am, teehee~ *poses*"

What is not mentioned here is what these girls did with me for the rest of the day, they were praising me to the high heavens (because I happen to be the only one on Day 1) for my make up, which are falling apart because lol poster colors in 50 cent bottles.
So yeah.

I find it hard to get into the mood to cosplay a Touhou. no new Touhous I like, old ones are too great to spoil (THANK YOU NONOMY)

My cosplay experience right now is limited to the one day I could make it down to Acen '13, in my ~75% finished Youki outfit. Pretty much every time anyone said anything about it they seemed to think it was of a character from Bleach or something. I did get some fun looks from a bunch of truckers that night when I stopped at a Subway on the way home for dinner and still hadn't changed yet though. And isn't confusing truckers what it's all really about? :derp: :D

is that Miko... Kilga?? Also, I counted the hours needed for makeup and it is depressing to think I can shape my face into a Touhou-esque trap (note that being Asian mostly, I can't trap unless I really want to... but that is about to change soon)

I have a similar moment at a Japanese supermarket for food before driving my friend home after Fanime. A staff came to me complimented my costume as her daughter went to the same convention in costume as well. I asked where does she think I come from.
"Inuyasha?"
I almost went speechless afterwards, but it was expected.
