Title: Recommend some podcasts
Post by: commandercool on July 30, 2013, 12:29:14 AM
I started a huge, tedious project at work today that's probably going to take me all of the rest of the week to finish, and my podcast supply is getting dangerously low. I don't think I'm going to have enough to hold out until this weekend. Anybody know a great podcast with a robust archive that I can plunder? For reference, my current favorites are:

Superego
Jordan Jesse Go! (and most of the shows on Maximum Fun)
The Flophouse
The HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast
Doug Loves Movies
Comedy Bang Bang
Stuff You Should Know
Radiolab
The Pod F. Tompkast

There are several dozen more that I listen to so odds are a lot of the suggestions will already be in my Ipod, but that should give a rough idea of my taste. Feel free to recommend drastically different stuff, I'll try new things. As always, thanks for reading, and any advice is appreciated

Welcome to Night Vale is fun. Just avoid Tumblr as usual if fandom bullshit bothers you.

It do. ::)

I'll give it a listen. Based on the description on the site it reminds me of some stuff.

I don't know if history podcasts are your thing, but I do enjoy Hardcore History and The Thomas Jefferson Hour

I usually lose interest in them eventually, but usually they're good for a while. I think I've downloaded episodes of Hardcore History like three or four times only to delete them unlistened six months later, but I'll try it again. Haven't heard of the other one, but I'll add it to the list.

It's not a podcast but you can get a lot of great audiobooks on librivox, e.g. you can listen to many of lovecrafts short stories and things like that (they're all very old and so that they're out of copyright - but no less good!).

If you like the Daily Show, you can try out The Bugle. It's a British news podcast with John Oliver as one of the co-hosts.

Do tell me more. I've been looking for one of those for when I run out Nightvale.

NPR  (http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_directory.php)has a goldmine of podcasts.

I also recommend This American Life (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/podcast).

Ooh, cool. Noted.

I  don't really, but it's worth a try.

Listened to most of these consistently a couple of years ago, kind of burned out on them. If I recall This American Life had a weird archive system (I think they wanted money) that made stockpiling episodes hard, but I probably should add it back to my download list.

Do tell me more. I've been looking for one of those for when I run out Nightvale.

Hardcore History mostly focuses on times of war and turmoil (fall of the Roman Republic, the Mongol invasion, etc.) - Dan Carlin's a good storyteller, and he always brings a pragmatic point of view that I find refreshing. For example, he has one podcast where he talks about the atomic bombing of Japan. We've all heard the old chestnut about how it was better than doing a land invasion, but Dan couches it in the larger narrative of strategic bombing throughout time: how people feared bombing practically from the moment flight was invented, to early stabs at military aviation during WW1, to the "trial run" at Guernica, to the horrors of fire bombing in Tokyo and Dresden. It's a very powerful podcast, and it effectively conveys the message that all warfare, not just atomic warfare, is madness.

The Thomas Jefferson Podcast features a guy roleplaying as Thomas Jefferson and answering viewer questions. No, it's not ERP. It's well-researched and does a good job of putting you in the shoes of the Founders. You become privy to the minutiae of our national heroes' lives, something that lets you put their actions in context. For example, it was very interesting to learn that TJ was bookish and reserved and fascinated with gadgets and experiments. Between all the money he spent on books and the way he wanted music all the time, you really get the sense he was born in the wrong era.

As far as historical podcasts go (although this one isn't even remotely educational) have you heard The Dead Authors Podcast? It's got Paul F. Tompkins, so that means it's automatically good. He role-plays H.G. Wells and uses his time machine to pull various authors out of the time stream to interview them. John Hodgman played Ayn Rand in a recent episode which was pretty silly.
