Oh, Shaft. You've done it again.
A hikikomori girl, tended to by her brother (who inexplicably keeps his face covered at all times), keeps tabs on said brother through a vast surveillance system. He has three friends at school, all of them girls. Well, except one of them is a woman who only looks like a girl. And another one is a robot. But whatever - the point is these three girls fight an evil monster made entirely of chocolate, while the monster itself may have arisen from Sasami-san's own mixed emotions about Valentine's Day.
Confused? You will be. But it's Shaft, baby, and that means the art, animation, writing and directing is going to be far above par and, at the very least, never boring.
By the by, did anyone else catch the brother in the library practicing a little Haruhi dance?

The first episode had a ton of reference drops like this, yeah. Like the saishu heiki kanojo wings.
Edit:
I think the Sasami dressing scene may hold the world record for most pointlessly detailed animation sequence in history. Or at least the world record for world's most bored animators.
-
I gotta admit, these almost anorexic girls make me... <3
the artist behind the artwork of this show is one of my many favorites, the potent mix of watercolor pastel style canvas background and vivid colors of character animation and storytelling at this point makes me wonder where it will go and I will gladly want to tag along with this. Shaft I would say... made this very much worth watching. so much so... I think because of this I will pick up nekomonogatari. (once it finished airing that is)
Sasami dressing scene likewise, shows us how that get up is done, it is important! SOMEHOW.
I totally love the fact that the brother's voice is basically Shiro-kun from Arakawa Under The Bridge, his attitude is pretty similar too. One of my favorite characters from that show and I love the whole idea of him covering his face. MALES ARE NOT IMPORTANT IN ANY SHOW EVER< GET OUT.
-
I saw the first episode and I'm intrigued. Looking forward to seeing more!

Even more than that-- it feels like the show is a big cross between Haruhi and Welcome to the NHK!. And I like that, that I do.
And yes, what AF says is true-- the art style is definitely top-notch stuff. I love it.
-
I'm confused. What the hell happened in the first episode? I don't even know anymore...But those chocolates sure seems nice.
and I could tell it was SHAFT the moment I looked at it. SHAFT really has that kind of awesome charm to its works.
-
I loved the changing scene. It makes the fight look like a powerpoint presentation.
Also, we (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Regalia_of_Japan) mythology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukuyomi) now. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaterasu)

!Briefcase! is now a fashion.
in fact, I think I just found my cosplan 2013.
-
Considering the amazingness of this anime I have changed my avatar appropriately.
-
That is glorious.
Also, just started the second episode.
"At this moment, inconceivable as it may be, Amaterasu's power resides in my brother.
For now, it would be correct to assume that my brother is Amaterasu.
So when my brother wishes for something, the Myriad Gods try to make him happy, and so alterations may occur.
That is what caused the incident on Valentine's Day. The gods altered themselves into chocolate and begged my brother to eat them."
Holy shit, it IS a combination of Haruhi and NHK. :O
-
This show just became new level epic.
Man dat red-headed chick in a labcoat is awesome.
-
I have watched it, I like the Pyjamas and the character wearing them... >.>

Silly hats and pajamas remind me of a certain series (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/734411_3652892381278_1087667743_n.jpg).

Shinto and video games. We should all be careful not to wish too hard for our favorites to continue, lest we create a monstrous fire-breathing hydra within the game itself that kills everyone. Lesson learned.
-
Here's to hoping there will be Persona 4 references in this...cuz yanno, Japanese myth and all that?
-
Thoughts on 3:
- Fast.
- I like that the plot is finally heading somewhere.
- The battle scenes still feel shoehorned as hell.
- That was the most fake-sounding crying voice I've ever heard outside of dubbed JRPGs.

Are you asking for references to references made in a completely unrelated game?
That's...
kind of a stretch.

Considering they already have a Haruhi reference/dance, and that this is a SHAFT work, I wouldn't exactly have my hopes down.
Amaterasu is awesome.

They've only been referencing animes as far as I can tell, like the Koi Senkyo reference.
I'm going to hope that this show isn't as surprisingly risky to watch as *monogatari.
-
> held back a week from any anime...
> watched this
> SO SATISFIED
this show is just... well, it sure steered my attention away from useless ECONOMY DEMONS. (Maou Maoyuu)

Do you mean "risque"? So far, not really.
At the third episode, the story of how the characters truly correspond to each other has now come together. I love the take on the Amaterasu myth, and the idea of gods getting annoyed with their station in life, choosing instead to scrap it and go independent. Good pacing, good art, really hoping the story maintains this momentum.
- The battle scenes still feel shoehorned as hell.
Really? Sasami believes the shrine intends to abduct her and make her life "a living hell". She arrives at said shrine, thinking her brother has sacrificed himself for her sake, and the 3 sisters in charge of protecting her naturally arrive and do her bidding.
Plus, you have to admit the choppers and tanks were pretty hilarious.
-
I don't know about you but I think everything shaft does is shoehorned as hell. Shoehorning is like their whole gimmick.
Shoehorning headtilts at every opportunity.
Shoehorning obscure references and symbolism where it doesn't fit.
y'know
-
Do you mean "risque"? So far, not really.
Risky to watch since it was risque. So meant both pretty much.
-
Careful with "shoehorn" - throw that word around often enough and it loses all meaning!
-
IT'S A SHRINE AFTER ALL
-
I hope someone starts translating the novels now...
Anyone has any idea how the story'll proceed from here?
-
I think the take with the original interpretations of the Myriad Gods and Amaterasu in this case seems to be a kind of changed here. The girls for example, seem to represent different images of various other known powerful Gods in the myth. For example, the robot is clearly a personification of Susanoo in my opinion. As it was, I must say they constantly mention names of the 'Creator of the Gods' such as Ninigi-no-on-no-Mikoto, the one created from the Heavens, Hence, quite literally the creator of Amaterasu.
One must say, the interplay between 'duty' and 'where and I belong is not here' is really beautiful in this show, a show with this much play on depth and personality is hard to find this season so this makes up a lot for it.
-
That's fine and all, but have you seen the sales for this show? They just go once again to show how much more the japs care about tits and asses than their own mythology.
-
sadly, panties > gods
-
After the latest episode I cannot help but imagine: WHAT GOOD IS SASAMI other than 'lol you better not make me angry'
what can she do?
I cannot help but notice how battle-crazed the Yagami sisters are, I also noted how Tsurugi changed from Amaterasu to whatever she is now resembles a lot of their (yet again) mythology standards. You can see in various descriptions when certain Gods descend from heaven to earth they change names, when they touched the earth they become etc etc something else (such as His Male Most Impetuous Augustness (Susanoo)) I imagined Tsurugi is probably now one of the three vessels of Japan. This can then explain why they stand by her side. Sentient weapons yeah!
-
Episode 6:
- Powerpoint at full force
- nice bgms
- mom 2 op, pls nerf
I don't get why she didn't simply port them both away from the start, and why she acted that cocky toward the god their shrine honors.
-
Kamiomi...WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?
-
this is the definition of the ultimate football mom.
She is powerful... and shit has finally gotten serious.
By Moon, I can only guess it means the original scripture that describes 'the world of the night does not belong to the Gods' back in the Kojiki, essentially saying they might as well hand the world over to Yamata-no-Orochi or something. This seems a lot like when Zeus tricked Hades to be the god of hell, except now it is the other way around.
-
To think literally to translate Amaterasu's runaway from the gods - a huge episode in the legends of the gods, into a girl shutting herself in as a hikkikomori.
genius.
-
I am still surprised and annoyed this doesn't sell well in Japan. Hopefully its one of those series that become popular after its run ends...I WANT MY TSURUGI AND KAMIOMI MODELS DAMNIT.
-
It is like all Shaft titles I suppose, there is good and there is bad, I admit the last two lol serious episodes into mom's past is a bit daunting for sales. considering this is a show for the most part about a hikki girl wth god powers. I wanna see what she goes around with those antics of god, not dwelling on her drama.
