I'm just getting started with the series. Unfortunately I bought DDR X and I can't return it. That'll teach me to read the reviews first.
So which ones do you recommend?
-
The Xbox/360 ones are awesome as far as songlist variety and quality does. For the PS2, Max, SN and SN2 aren't too bad either.
-
My brother is really really Heavy into DDR, which is totally YEAH GOOD FOR YOU EXERCISE from me, but mats and Stepmania/ITG/etcetc is pretty much all he does and it's really fucking irritating, especially since his taste in music is less than not annoying.
I rarely play anymore except at the arcades. 6 foot minimum and 8/9 foot maximum.
I recommend the 360 ones, but I hate hate hate Universe's interface. And of course if you can manage to get Extreme it has like fifty billion songs.
-
What's wrong with DDR X?
-
I don't understand either what's bad with DDR X. I don't have it neither did I play it but as I can see, the few reviews on GameFAQs don't seem to particularly hate it. The website gives it 7,7/10 out of 22 votes...

Seriously, grab stepmania.

Shut up, Nemoma scores one. Grab Stepmania and ask Gpop you want arrows with sauce. He will understand. :V

I've played DDR since 2000 and I love DDR X. I mean arcade versions btw.
I used to take part in championships n everything.
Kinda quit during the "Extreme" break, since nothing new came out for years and uni and work and girlfriend were taking most of my time, and then i hated SN when it came out...
If there was a DDR X close to where I live I'd definitely start playing again if only for the boss songs.
I really wish I could play FELMO and Pluto Relinquish on my feet.
-
Just don't get Supernova 2 (Fucking Pluto series are fucking retarded crap stepcharts).
Oh, and get MAX, Extreme 2, and probably MAX2.
But seriously, DDR's stepcharts are becoming more bullshit than ever. Seriously.
I want ITG back ;_;

I really want to get the 360 versions, but I have no space to put a mat in, and I don't want to use a controller (if I did I'd rather download the songs for Stepmania).
Only the AC version of Extreme has a fuckload of songs, which is an awesome thing.

I seriously (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMzMzYEuGUU&fmt=18) mean it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRdFVGo1EZM&fmt=18)
Of course, some of the easier charts are better, but they're definitely not as fun as the stepcharts from the older games (from MAX - Extreme 2)
-
WHAT
CHAOS IS PERFECT
seriously
i can agree PRO and HDVO endings are very hard, but I've played PIU as well since 2002, and that kind of chart is pretty normal to me.
it's only natural that harder things are made to satisfy experienced players.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bullshit..
I definitely love Chaos, the music, the stepcharts.. everything.
-
Sure, Chaos is a decent song, but the BPM stops and all that ruined the chart completely.
PRO tries to whore the cross-overs.
Actually, this chart proves how low they can go (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umwrzdFEdUw&fmt=18).
-
That Dead End is retarded, I can agree with that.
As well as some of the X-Specials
As much as PRO can look ridiculous, PR Heavy is pretty nicely done.
God I really want to play that!
There is only one Extreme and one SN1 about an hour and half away from where I live..
i haven't touched a DDR arcade for like.. 4 or 5 months =(
I really like the bpm stops at Chaos.. They go very well with the music.
-
Seriously, grab stepmania.
Shut the hell up.

You too. If you are seriously using Dead End (Groove Radar Special) as a representation of what DDR is like at this point, you're dumb.
One thing you guys have to understand about Boss Songs is that they are Boss Songs. The current state of rhythm games is we have people tri-starring 12s and 13s on sightreads, and the only way to prevent that anymore is to create a chart with ridiculous stops and tempo changes that have to be learned, which is why we have ridiculous things like Fascination MAXX, Pluto, and Trigger. Dead End (Groove Radar Special) is a gimmick chart that I guarantee was put there "just to see how far you'd get", if ITG players would put as much time and effort into it as they do Vertex^2, then I'll bet it wouldn't even be an issue. Shall I also bring up Stop and Go? Everyone just looks for reasons to attack DDR, because people are either butthurt about losing ITG or people just want Extreme AC and think SuperNOVA is the work of the devil.
-
Not really, I just didn't enjoy Supernova and onwards. The stepcharts just didn't appeal to me at all since then.
But I did like Extreme 2. Those stepcharts were fun.
Stop & Go at least made sense in the stops. There were quite a few stops in Chaos that made NO SENSE whatsoever. They were just placed to "make the stepchart harder", that's all. I personally didn't find it fun.
Faxx wasn't too bad. It was kinda fun, but...I dunno why, but the gallops didn't feel right to me.
I haven't played Trigger yet, so I won't comment that at all.
Have you seen DeltaMAX? Compare it to DM Ashura's proposition for the stepchart. I find his chart A LOT better than Konami's version.
I'm not saying that DDR is terrible in every way. I'm just saying that it has a lot more potential than what it is now. I still play DDR when I pass by one.
-
I LOVE Trigger.
It's one of the coolest songs and has a pretty cool stepchart.
It's very hard, I'd say it's up there with PRO and FELMO/FAXXO
It's definitely worth a try.
-
Have you seen DeltaMAX? Compare it to DM Ashura's proposition for the stepchart. I find his chart A LOT better than Konami's version.
Both DM Ashura's and DukAmok's charts were bad. Oh yeah, DukAmok is the Konami that made that chart.

Actually, DumAmok said that he has no say in the stepcharts. He doesn't make them, just place them. He has to do what the boss tells him.
-
I enjoyed NEOMax
That's from DM Ashura isn't it? It's very very old.
i miss the old times of Tournamix as well.
-
Yeah, I used to make steps too back in the day, and even worked on a similar game until the whole ITG fiasco kind of killed any feasibility it might have had.
I need to go back and clean up my old files sometime and release them somewhere so the few pad players can enjoy them.

Uhh, he told both DM Ashura and myself that he made the charts. In fact, DM Ashura and I both actually worked on the chart for the song and submitted them to him.

Well that's something I haven't heard then. I was told that he has to do what the boss says, and he's very limited in the stepping.
-
Take it easy, everyone. I actually wanted to know which games have the best music; I'm just a casual gamer and I'm not worried about how the charts are.
Also I never bought an Xbox or 360. My budget for video games and consoles is very tight, which is why I only recently bought a PS2.
-
with PS2 you can pretty much play all versions up to SN2 I think.
I'd still download ITG and play the original DDR songs with it.. =)
-
Like I said before, Extreme 2 and MAX. I believe MAX2 is a good choice as well. I dunno about Extreme though.
-
Pretty much both Extremes and both MAXs.

I haven't play ITGPC, but knowing that ITG was based off the SM engine then pretty much this =/.

This.
You said ITG was slow as hell on the PS2.
I said I play it on my pc and it runs well.
I know it's a mod of SM.
-
it's not a "a mod" of SM
ITG is quite literally stepmania with a different theme
-
Stepmania is such a robust program with its low hardware requirements and its enormous collection of simfiles that it really would be stupid not to get it with a USB pad as an addition or replacement to the ps2/xbox versions. Heck, the newer version even supports widescreen displays so your arrows don't get all stretched out.
The one thing that's starting to annoy me about DDR's new stepcharts....which first was evident in supernova, was that songs like fascination MAXX and the super love me mix were tossing steps at you that seem to be a lot more doable if you have the handle bar, such as those quick successive jumps (you can use the bar to bring yourself to the ground faster). I normally play with a hard foam mat (if you treat them correctly, they last you years!) and not having that handle bar support makes it really hard to be able to do those kinds of steps. You just kinda BS through them though and take your B or C (especially towards the end of fascination super love me mix on challenge) and play something that's more fun. The other annoying steps are the superfast (350BPM+) crossover steps that again seem to be geared towards bar usage for support. Twisting one's torso without the bar that fast is just asking for something to snap.
If you want some excellent ITG style step charts, you should look into Ike Pie's stuff......those are really great steps (Sounds of Life on challenge is ridiculously difficult though)! The only annoying thing is that Gunther is in the song selection more than once. There's also this 13 footer version of IOSYS Overdrive (from this guy rob0090 or something like that) that's a tough one to get through, but fun nonetheless. I really wish that there were more stuff on stepmania from DJ sharpnel or Onoken.
In my opinion, the best way to play, if you don't want a metal mat, is to place a hard foam mat on a plywood or particle board surface....which is something that you can get cheap and custom cut for you at a hardware store. 40x40 inches should be fine, and buy one of those nonslip carpet runners to put under the wood surface as well as between the wood and the pad (if your pad's grip sucks). I've also found that a lot of hard foam mats are crap because they have such a mushy insert in them (they're about as hard as a microwaved pizza crust....mushy as hell). If you can get your hands on one of the redoctane ignition pad inserts, you can use that on other hard foam pads and they work like a dream. I have to admit though, it's kinda hard to find a good DDR mat nowadays. Getting one is taking a shot in the dark.
I'm actually still looking for good songpacks with well designed stepcharts in the ITG 11-13 level. If someone has some they're willing to share I'd love to know about it. Send me a PM or something!

ahahahahaha wow. Stepmania is a huge resource hog.

Might I remind you of ITG1's PS2 version, complete with RedOctane soft pad and no bar? That game had songs like Pandemonium, Euphoria, and Tell on it, so don't even try to blame anything on DDR's chart-to-pad issues, because they were far more present elsewhere.

I will hate myself for even thinking that.

ahahahahaha wow. Stepmania is a huge resource hog.
Ummm...yeah..hard drive space aside, I can run an SMP folding@home client using 90% of my CPU and still run this game at full frames at 1920x1080. My processor is a Phenom II x3 720 and my graphics card a GTX 260 core 216. My old 1.7Ghz centrino with a mobility radeon 9700 was also able to do full frames on this game at 1200x800. I really don't see what the problem is here, unless you're trying to run Crysis on the side or something of that sort.

I own the PS2 version of ITG1. Pande, Euphoria, and Tell are completely feasible without the bar (you just need a crapload of stamina for Pande) for scoring purposes as they don't have those stupid "jumpy" parts like the last few bars of Fascination (Love Me Mix) on challenge, or the weird crossovers present on something like the end of Healing D Vision challenge. It just seems to me that at the ~400BPM level, those crossovers or jumps are getting somewhat impractical on the player's torso itself.
So what you're saying is... you like 11-13s, but you have a problem with DDR's 10s? What?
I don't have a problem with all of DDR's 10s, just the few mentioned above. The MAXX series of songs are super fun to play, as well as the plethora of remixes from it. Paranoia and Bag variants are also really cool. Well there is an ITG song that I have a problem with and that's Hardcore of the North.....I don't like the steps on that one for some reason. I'll take a look into that r21freak for sure and try him out, thanks!

Disney Channel Edition actually wasn't bad, especially since it did have songs like DoLL and Sakura on it.
On that same note, Disney Mix was AWESOME because it had Night of Fire, It's a Small World (Ducking Hardcore Mix), and Supercalifragilisticexpialidcouiousoisuahdgiuabiuqaei5hboieruhgq345.

it even has shitty ddr crossovers like pluto and faxx! woooow

I've been playing dancing games for like 8 years ddr just got incredibly shitty after extreme
seriously have you played ddr x. how do you even make something like that and then release it

i always wanted to get iidx. seems like more of a challenge.

sorry I couldn't hear you over "U Can't Touch This"

What about songs that start slow and finish fast? Sure, there aren't any weird jumps in speed, but slow stuff is hard to time sometimes, and since it goes fast later, you can't really use a high speed modifier.

Towel/Sud+ does not help me at all, and I really can't see how it helps anyone else. I've never been able to use it as a pseudo-speed mod.

But besides that, I deeply regret buying DDR X. I don't care if the beats are the bom-diggity; I'll stick to the older games.
And VgameT, I might get Beatmania if I can somehow find the game and the controller and pay for them. I guess I'm playing games for 8 year olds until I can manage that.
