Title: Touhou Cave Story Hack
Post by: EthanSilver on July 24, 2012, 07:44:55 PM
Greetings all, kinda new here. I was looking for a place to post a quick Concealed the Conclusion translation "patch" I'd made and figured I may as well post up another project I'd worked on too while I'm here. This project is incomplete, and I have no current plans to complete it (it's been on the shelf for, like, close to a year now), but I figured if it'll keep someone entertained for a bit why not? There's a good 2 or so hours' worth of gameplay, though, so there's that. :)

Among others, the game features two playable characters, an immense quantity of assembly-written weapons and enemies/bosses, and a few changes to the "pause" screen including a completion %. Virtually all modifications to the game are documented, too, so if you're crafty enough you can probably make use of some of this in your own hack.

Here it is. (http://diceroller.site40.net/games/files/collapse_of_fantasy.zip) Enjoy.

It's fun, feels like a completed game. Unfourtanetly, I was not prepared for the crushing difficulty (it's not that diffcult, I'm just bad at platformers). It makes me raage X.x.

Ya so here was my experience.

Pick marisa.
Die, twice. "this game is ridiculous"
Get first 2 power hp powerup. "Ok now this is reasonable"

Go to Outside world, die. Come back and visit the shrine. (LOVE THE POND AND SUIKA, THAT WAS A NICE TOUCH :3)
First spike death "whaat?"
Level down. "What is this, mario bros?"
-Long and painful quest to get the second powerup. Let's just say I have graced the tips of every spike in the whole world. Now I know why UsuallyDead is insane from that LP'ing that old-school platformer Mulana.
Aqquire 7 total hp. Feel invincible.
Beat cirno, die to creeps after that. "AWWWWG" Beat cirno another two times before passing by.

The bamboo forest  "there aren't bamboo grass spikes aren't there?. I think I'm going paranoid"
Few more deaths. Always time a few more deaths. Get level 3, and feel even more invincible.

Reach save point and fight Tewi with 4 hp, with 1 hit away from losing level 3.
Many deaths, durr hurr, then beat tewi. Go inside. "WHERE IS MY INN" Run into a rabit "FUUUUUUUUU"

more deaths trying to beat Tewi again. This time I go back and save.

Go in to enteitei, try to find a damn healer (I'm still at 2hp). Tap out after 3 tries.

It's fun and addicting, but about 3 times more cringe inducing. The saving grace (or carrot on the stick) is the leveling up is nice. Double the firepower + more range!! is nice. I will keep going at a later day.

Woah. I almost forgot I'd posted this here. :P

Couple of tips...

- If you're low on health, hang around a save point and kill enemies for health pickups. There's a health restore thing in Eirin's room, IIRC, in Eientei.
- If Eientei's too hard, backtrack a bit and try the other route. There's at least one or two more powerups to be obtained there, which should help quite a bit.
- PROTIP: Do not expect to defeat
Flandre
. It's doable but she's mainly intended to be fought later on (though the game "ends" before she can comfortably be beaten).
- IIRC, you should have about 17 health by the very end of what's done and 2 weapons with either character. 'Couple of other items too.
- Again, IIRC, you can get an item from Eirin that restores all your health. It's a one time thing though, so you should save it for
Flandre
.
