There was a curious death at the start of Shinki's battle.  I placed myself no higher than halfway up the screen to get a slightly higher shooting score (I hope) while her health was charging and scored a miss on the spot.

That's an unfortunate glitch in the game. I don't know what triggers it for sure, but it seems doing just that is the cause. So in the future, don't do it.

As for me, I have a lunatic score, but frankly it's terrible. I play to clear and not for score, so people on normal can usually get a higher score than me on lunatic. >.> Still, due to the sore lack of activity:

Lunatic - Mima

Submitting now because I feel like it. Notable ones include...

Hard - Reimu
BaitySM - 97,243,600 - C

Lunatic - Reimu
BaitySM - 91,238,700 - C

Extra - Mima
BaitySM - 137,884,910 - C

I can only see myself improving my Extra score by not bombing during the run. Each bomb used within any run reduces the score by ~1.5 million each with Mima. Further, the minor Spirit loss at the end (and the static[?] bonus for No Bombs) is contributing to this, but I don't see it adding up that much.

I guess doing "Bullet Clear" during the most optimal times would also be helpful for the purpose of attaining the highest amount of Point Items, which play a large factor in the Final Bonus, and being there for Base Score purposes.

I wonder if a 500 Extend! is possible. If on Normal, I can obtain ~460 with Reimu, then surely... it may be possible.

It is indeed.  Got it during the Shinki fight, though (505 point items in total).

No slowdown %ages recorded, but it's usually 0.5% anyway. Going to give Extra a few more shots after the road trip.

Do you have the screenshot that comes after the end stats?  It would be nice to compare progression.

Keeping the previous attempt because it's closer to your latest submission.

Lost four point items to Luize because her lasers were in the way, picked up about 70% of Alice's items.  1M lost to shooting down the S5 midboss a second too early.

I haven't paid much attention to the different values for the first boss clear bonus with Yuki & Mai, but it was around 361K this run.  What was surprising was Yuki being destroyed by the end of the first attack of their last phase.  Their boss health was in the red but nowhere near the point where I'm used to moving on to fight solo.  It could be that both bosses have their own health bars to contribute to the overall health instead of the game checking to see which one received more damage at a certain point, but I really don't think Yuki was taking that much more damage.

Not really much to say.  Today was the first day I've ever played Mystic Square, so all scoring was ad hoc.

Ok, I've updated the scores (now that nobody cares anymore). Some people posted some alternative lower scores with different characters, I didn't take those into account.

First time I ever played.

Not sure what I'm going to do with this. So if you want it updated, you need to at least precise difficulty, the rest I can more or less figure out myself.

Average item collection on stage, along with a death. Could have better item collection, in particular when Alice transitions into her first lightning attack; the bomb was poorly timed as well. I see potential for around 185-190mil with this pattern.

That's not what fixes it. You need to tell the emulator which file to use for the font.

OK, I'm not too good with Marisa's hitbox yet, so there were various accidental deaths and safety bombs; also I got unlucky with the Shinki supergraze... wait how did I score only 7 million below my Mima score? It would have even been a letter score if I hadn't made that mistake at the end of the Mai battle. Weird, I expected around the low 90s...

A bunch of deaths to Shinki and Yumeko (this game's Reimu is too slow), but still submitting to retake the lead.

Reimu has interesting potential, despite the slow speed, because the homing shots clear enemies much more easily allowing you to concentrate on collecting point items. It's especially useful in stage 1 and some parts of stage 4, and somewhat in the second half of stage 5 (possibly more so on higher difficulties). She's at a clear disadvantage in stage 3 though, with all the places where enemies come from static locations at opposite sides of the screen.

@Zil: Don't you have a letter score already in the scoreboard (Extra Yuka)? Or do you mean it's your first on Normal?

Six deaths here as well. I was really hoping to reach 100 million with Reimu. I'm sure I could with some more tries. I'm also suddenly able to record this game again, so I think I might do a Mima run and record it. Hoping for 110mil, but I have no idea how hard that would be.

By the way, I've never reached 500 point items. I think I'm doing something wrong. Stage 6 maybe.

Since I don't have a video to watch, I can't really know exactly where you're missing point items, but you can try going by the timing of your extends.
100 - near the dream item in stage 2
200 - second half of stage 3
300 - early/mid-second half of stage 4
400 - first half of stage 5
500 - Shinki (or stage portion of stage 6, which I've only reached with Mima) (edit: now also with Reimu, should be possible with any character)
Of course, it depends on your character (Mima>Marisa>Reimu>Yuka, I think), but it should still be in that general area if you're on track to reaching 500.

Just 2 short of 500. I reached it as Mima though. I was collecting the items in stage 6 in a dumb way (and bombing sometimes because I trapped myself). But yeah, those timings for the extends make sense.

Will you be doing some more scores in the near future? Competition is always fun, and we could probably beat most of the existing high scores.
Title: Re: 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square

Wait, so was your Mima 105m with or without the 500 extend? If it was without, then Normal Mima can go pretty far beyond 105m, since I normally get over 570 point items with Mima.

More scores in the near future? I was probably scoring while you were posting that. This is one of my favorite games in the series to score in, despite how simple the scoring system is, and I was planning on going through the various shot types and difficulties (like you did with PoDD) sooner or later. But this way is more fun.

And I agree. The only existing high score I'm not sure about is Heartbeam's Easy 75m (and the nicovideo Extra 204m if you're including that, then again, you've already scored higher than 部屋干し's other two Extra scores); all the others should be easily beatable.

Two deaths to Yumeko that really shouldn't have happened (also one to Shinki luckgraze), several bombs on various other phases, overshot Louise's first phase, and some suboptimal point item collection elsewhere. I don't even feel like uploading a video of this...

Normal - Mima
Karisa - 114,452,990 - C - Replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll1vg_Kdj_U)

Well, this was much better. 582 point items collected. One death, to the stage portion of stage 5. Overshot Shinki luckgraze, so I only finished with 600 graze instead of 999, but at least I didn't die there.

Also I still haven't learned how to do the Louise supergraze consistently. Or any supergraze in this game for that matter.

How far can this game go on Normal? At least 125 million, considering that I lost ~3m from the death (point item values + power item values + .9m at end) and another ~5m from not reaching 999 graze in stage 2 and stage 6, and also missed some point items that I could have collected. Probably higher if you consider the possibility of stalling other boss phases for extra graze.

Edit: corrected estimate on how far this game can go, and various other details.

Yeah, the 105m run didn't reach 500, iirc. And I still have no idea how you're getting 582. 0_0 I'll have to check your video again. Looks like you've pretty much dominated Normal mode though. I'll be happy to take second place on every difficulty, at least.

Also, I was able to record this one. I'll edit the link in after the video's uploaded. Then I think I'll give Easy a try later tonight.

And I really don't know about 部屋干し's Extra score. The other PC-98 extra stages are practically pure luck, so it didn't take much to beat his scores there. This one is a whole different deal.

And here the luckgraze was terrible. I ended up just throwing bombs at it to graze without dying, sending the Dream Bonus to hell. In hindsight, I think it's better to just risk dying, or forego the graze altogether. Chicken out on the sides or something. Nevermind that, actually. Bombing is probably best. That thing is annoying. I really wish it weren't there.

I'll do an easy score for each character as well. Aiming to at least beat Heartbeam's Mima. And that reminds me, apparently this game has a score thread on shmups forum. May as well submit my scores there too, I guess.

I wonder if you'd do better on harder difficulties, since staying at DreamBonus Max has such a huge effect on score, and you're by far the better of the two of us at dodging.

I wouldn't consider LLS Extra 77m luck. It still takes skill to perfect or 1-death the bosses. 80m is probably luck though.

Shinki's luckgraze sometimes kills you halfway through, though. If you bomb halfway through each wave, you'll time it out before reaching 999. And it wouldn't work well with non-Mima characters since their bombs take off a more significant amount of dream bonus. What I wish is that it was actually aimed around you, like those fairies right after the midboss in PCB stage 5 Hard (a border there is worth like 100,000 value if you didn't know).

593 point items collected; the 500 extend was actually at Yumeko's last point item. Though 2 deaths to Mai, and 1 to the stage 5 midboss, meant most of stage 5's point/power items were not collected at a good value. I was considering sacrificing my remaining lives for point items and calling it a 600 extend run, but I was close enough to my high score that I decided against it, and since I did score higher, might as well post it.

Edit: Some random calculations for stage 6 Easy.
- Dying once to the Shinki luckgraze costs around 1.3-1.6m (500,000 from not perfecting the stage, ~450,000 from the remaining life, 300,000 from 5 point items replaced by power items, ~150,000-400,000 from the point item clear bonus multiplier depending on your graze and whether you gained any point items from the death).
- Subsequent deaths cost you the same amount from the remaining lives, plus pretty much ruin your chance of reaching DreamBonus Max again.
- Bombing costs 250,000 from the no-bomb bonus, but point item value effect is negligible as long as you can still collect point items at 51,200.
- Grazing in stage 6 is worth 250,000 per 100 graze (2,497,500 for 999 graze), assuming 90 point items in the clear bonus.

Luckgraze tore me apart. It was killing me even when she didn't move sideways. Probably a bad idea on Easy, yeah.

And I think Hard and Lunatic will be more fun, at least. More emphasis on the Dream Bonus means less on the luck oriented parts. (Like the Shinki graze.)

Do you think Mima could get 600 items in a no-miss run? Maybe with a bomb somewhere, like the end of stage 5.

Oh, by the way, I think the no-miss and no-bomb bonuses for stage 6 are worth 500k, not 250. So 1 million is lost just from that by dying once.
Title: Re: 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square
Post by: Karisa on December 21, 2012, 04:06:06 am
I think no-death 600 point items (i.e. 10-life clear starting with default lives) is possible, but you may need to get really lucky with point item spawn points. My 593 would have been 587 without the deaths, and I probably did let at least 13 point items drop throughout the run.

I don't see why a bomb at the end of stage 5 would help though. You'd have to use it after killing all the enemies to avoid converting their point items into power items, and by then it's usually easy enough for Mima to collect all the remaining point items. I think the bombs in a point item run probably would be best used to counteract unlucky boss point item placement... actually, that might work for scoring in general on Easy, considering how 5 point items at 51,200 value are worth more than 4 point items at 60,000 value, especially once you factor in the clear bonus multiplier. Then again, the next few point items would also be 51,200 instead of 60,000, and you'd lose the no-bomb bonus for that stage. Hmm...

Oh, by the way, I think the no-miss and no-bomb bonuses for stage 6 are worth 500k, not 250. So 1 million is lost just from that by dying once.
On Normal, yes. On Easy, there's the .5x multiplier, which I'd incorporated into my calculations because they were specifically for Easy.

(no new score in this post because I've been busy learning how to use MoF MarisaC)

Oh, for some reason I thought those weren't effected by the 0.5 multiplier. For the end of stage 5, I was thinking you could sweep from one side to the other, then bomb. Ideally towards the end of it so you don't lose too many enemies after the auto-collect. At least, that part stood out to me as the most likely place to drop lots of items. I'm also wondering if the game lets you hold 10 lives at once. And if not, I wonder what the effects of a suicide at the start of stage 1 would be. If the extra items and power make up for the the NMNB bonus. Anyway...

Easy - Mima
Zil - 75,099,340 - C - Replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyK2vdzQbBU) (No-miss, No-Bomb)

Looks like I just barely beat Heartbeam's Easy score. The Luize supergraze put me a couple million ahead early on. I guess he didn't know about it. Then I accidentally killed Yumeko's red phase too early, which kind of evened it out. Then I went for the luckgraze in stage 6 since I figured I'd need it. Went through two of them I think, then grazed alongside the others. Also ended that too early, so I only got about 400 graze from it. (I admit I have no idea how long Yumeko or Shinki's attacks last, or how much health they have. Should've practiced them. You can probably get 999 graze in stage 5.) With a really good run I think 80mil can be reached.

Also Karisa, you should learn the Luize graze, if you haven't already. It's not very hard and is extremely rewarding. I also seem to recall being able to supergraze Yumeko's semifinal attack on Lunatic by going in circles around her, but I tried it a bit a while ago (on Easy) and it seemed too fast somehow. That one's probably too risky to bother with, in any event, unless you're really desperate. You can also get some easy graze from the stage 3 midboss (stand on top of it), though I think it's still best to kill it as quickly as possible. And then Reimu and Marisa can capture Alice's final attack from over her head, if you keep moving left and right. That's kind of risky but doable.

Well, those are the supergrazes I've found, at least.

600 extend reached!
(and with it an extra 465k points, yay)

OK, never mind what I just said in my previous post. The 600 extend feels doable consistently with enough practice (on Easy with Mima that is), except perhaps if you get really unlucky with point item spawn points.

No deaths, two panic bombs that may or may not have actually prevented a death (costing me the stage 4 and 5 no-bomb bonuses). When I noticed how far ahead I was in the point item count, I started playing more cautiously during the boss battles. I would have grazed Yumeko's second phase for a while otherwise.

This game's Hard is harder than I remember. Possibly because of a tendency to avoid bombing when aiming for score. Nothing special regarding my survival here (9 deaths 9 bombs), but the score seems possibly worth posting.

Also it seems you scored higher with Reimu than that old run of mine that's currently the highest Mima score. I remember when a C score on Hard was a huge accomplishment for me. Now it feels like it has to be at least C to just be a decent run with lower-scoring characters.

I'll make a random estimate right now that Hard's potential is around 160 million (if Easy's is around 80m and Normal's is around 125m). Let's see how wrong (or right?) I am.

Hard - Marisa
Karisa - 126,486,660 - C - Replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqRszqnUeUg)

1 death Alice (didn't feel like restarting), 1 death Yuki/Mai, 1 death Yumeko, 1 death Shinki. Notable in that I did not enter stage 6 with minimal dream bonus.

I had a run that was no-death up to the stage 5 midboss earlier, but then I somehow managed to die a total of 4 times in the remainder of the stage portion.

Hard - Reimu
Karisa - 122,708,580 - C - Screenshot (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5hr-C2708580.png)

Forgot the second screenshot that I usually include, but I'm planning to improve this later anyway.

Hard - Yuka
Karisa - 113,038,430 - C - Screen1 (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5hy-B3038430-1.png) Screen2 (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5hy-B3038430-2.png)

First clear. Still annoying shot type. Surprised I reached the 500 extend. I'll likely only try to improve this if someone else scores higher.

Hard - Reimu
Karisa - 129,269,130 - C - Replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ikoqHZq-V0)

This was looking to be a pretty good run, despite an early death to one of Alice's streaming phases, until I died three times in a row to Devil's Recitation. Still worth a video in my opinion.

I hope you find a way to get the game running again soon, Zil. It's not as interesting when I seem to be on my own.

Easy - Yuka
Karisa - 69,373,630 - C - Screen1 (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5ey-69373630-1.png) Screen2 (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5ey-69373630-2.png)

Just because... oh wait, this score is higher than my Reimu score. I'd better fix that at some point.

By the way, it seems destroying those egg-things Mai shoots actually gives you around 100,000 points per wave. So it may be worth stalling Mai for a while on Easy, since an extra several hundred thousand points isn't a trivial amount.

Bleh, sorry about dying like that. The emulator started cooperating again after two days, but then I got distracted by PoFV and family stuff. (Christmas and all that.) That's all done with though so I should be back in action.

Extra - Reimu
Zil - 97,256,200 - C - Screen1 (http://i.imgur.com/jz2j1.jpg) Screen2 (http://i.imgur.com/lVXPd.jpg)

Just submitting this in case I don't feel like redoing it later. It'll take a lot of practice to learn how to time the bullet cancels with Mima alone. Not sure if I want to go overboard with everyone else. Not that I'm really getting into Extra yet. This was just a random run to check out the translation. Gotta finish Hard and Lunatic first.

Just one run each, getting better as I went. (Mima was last.) It's actually not that complicated. The stage may be the hardest part. And the safespot for the one green phase is actually pretty big and extremely easy to get into. I did it on my first try. Anyway, I'll revisit this stage later. It's very fun.

Hard - Marisa
Zil - 123,923,780 - C - Screenshot (http://i.imgur.com/NlSRW.jpg)

Deaths everywhere. Only high point was "perfecting" Yumeko, and thus some good item values in stage 6.

Some random stuff I looked at:
- Marisa can apparently capture the cheeto lasers from over Shinki's head. You just have to be close enough to hit with your missiles.
- I tried to do the same with Reimu and captured it. I then tried a second time and it timed out. So I don't know what to say about that. Maybe I wasn't at full power, or maybe you need to find a way to do a bit more damage. At the very least, if you're dodging at the bottom and have to bomb, you may as well run up there for the rest of it.
- It seems the luckgraze never hits you on Hard, at least not at max rank. I used a savestate to try it numerous times and it never hit me.
Title: Re: 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square
Post by: Karisa on January 01, 2013, 06:08:20 am
Well, I can confirm that the luckgraze can still kill you on Hard below max rank. I just died to it once by not stopping before it was fired (still dodging the previous wave), then died to two of the next three waves even though I know I was staying still. (scored C4 overall with Mima, nothing special, but I died five times to stage 4 anyway)

Also I'll get a chance to try out capturing the cheeto lasers from the safespot with Reimu when we get to Lunatic, since I'll likely be using it with all characters, at least if I have low/no bombs since dying once during it already misses out on the point items.

Edit:
Actually, the luckgraze can kill you on Hard at max rank... unless I wasn't at max rank here? I didn't die or bomb at all in stage 6, but it's possible the death in stage 5 was close enough... I'll upload a video to show it, even though I'm planning to improve this further since there were too many deaths in this run. I should be able to finish with 6 or 7 lives, at least.

Edit 2: Um... something went seriously wrong with the video recording. It seems to only contain the top-left quarter of what it should... I guess a high score screenshot will have to do.

Edit 3+:
Hard - Mima
Karisa - 139,782,280 - C - Screen1 (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5hmi-D9782280-1.png) Screen2 (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5hmi-D9782280-2.png)

Hmm, you know how some enemies in this game (and LLS) can drop either power items, point items, nothing, or rarely a large power item? I think their RNG is partly fixed. It seems that every second enemy killed will drop an item, and that they'll never drop more point items than power items (so the first item dropped in stage 1 will always be a power item, and the enemies on the right side at the start of the stage will never drop 3 point items unless the enemies on the left dropped fewer than 2 point items). Whether or not you collect the items doesn't seem to make a difference.

As for the large power items, I'm pretty sure they (and certain LLS dream items) are dependent on total number of enemies killed, though there also seems to be some slight random variance (noticeable with the first dream item in LLS, at least). I've actually only determined this in LLS and EoSD, but it seems reasonable to conclude it also applies to MS. Not that power items in MS are very relevant.

Yeah, the items do some alternating thing. Reimu can sometimes take advantage of that if you're lucky. In stage 5 it can happen that your homing shots make it so that you keep killing the enemies on the far side just after you kill the ones directly above you, so you can easily collect every item while nothing falls on the other side. On the other hand, you can get unlucky and all of the items fall on the wrong side. I agree about the large power items as well. I find that, when using Reimu, I'm much more likely to get the second one in stage 1.

The emulator decided to destroy me against Yumeko, so I went into stage 6 with the dream gauge completely empty. Then I died to the luckgraze, but there's no way I was at max rank. I also bombed in stages 3 and 4. So it was terrible really. Redoing it later for sure.

Let's get this started again, shall we?

Actually I've been having trouble clearing Lunatic with non-Mima characters. This score should be easily beatable with a 1cc, but it's still higher than what's already in the table, so I'm posting it anyway.

Lunatic - Reimu
Karisa - 110,819,500 - 6 - Screenshot (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee487/KarisaMirisame/th5lr-110819500.png)

Also I discovered today that bombs also prevent dream item drops, not just point items. So if you think you'll need to bomb the last few enemies in stage 4, you may want to plan a bomb early so it runs out before it can destroy the dream item enemies, since having max dream bonus going into stage 5 has a huge effect on the score.

It was awful. No deaths up to Mai's final attack, but that killed me twice. The second because I over estimated my invincibility. Then stage 5 killed me four or five times. By some miracle I perfected Yumeko. Lost all of my remaining lives but one to Shiki's luckgraze phase (though not to the luckgraze itself), then finished the rest of the fight without dying. So I survived everything dangerous with chain-deaths to the easy parts, basically.

I also noticed that the cone of bullets in Yumeko's semifinal phase is much narrower than it was on lower difficulties, and it can indeed be supergrazed. So I wasn't imagining things. (Not that I supergrazed it in this run, mind you.)

By some miracle I perfected Yumeko.
A perfect Lunatic Yumeko, with a non-Mima character, in a full run (i.e. without a savestate right before her)? Even at low rank, I think that deserves a video. I still end up having to bomb her 3-way phases pretty much every time I change streaming direction with slower characters. Which of course means I end up with terrible stage 6 item value; I think I only gained 6m from the stage portion in that score I submitted.

And Mai's final attack tends to kill me a lot too, with that combination of the small interval for finishing her off with a 1.5-2m bonus and the exploding egg things she shoots. I don't think I've no-deathed that far on Lunatic yet though. Any tips on dealing with the stage 4 enemies that shoot rings of dense bullets, in the places near the end of the stage where they spawn too frequently to destroy easily?
Title: Re: 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square

I deleted the recording right after, unfortunately. It may happen again though, if I'm unlucky enough to be out of bombs before the fight.

About the stage 4 enemies, I'm not entirely sure which ones you're talking about. The hardest part of that stage, to me, is where three columns of enemies drop down, some stopping, shooting waves of kunai, while others just rush straight down, alternating between the middle and edges, and the last wave has them come from underneath you. That part is really hard with Reimu since she can't really kill the enemies quickly enough. Ideally what I'd do (with Mima, for instance) is stand midway up the screen, under the column that stops to shoot kunai, and stream down slowly (to avoid the pellets coming from the side enemies) while dodging the kunai from above. With Reimu what I did was basically use a bunch of bombs. Since I'd normally have perfected (or nearly perfected) up to that point, I could even part with two or three bombs there and still survive.

If you meant the ones that shoot red rings (which I doubt), then for that I go pretty high up the screen, directly under where the left enemies would stop to shoot. From there I just stream down, while inching a bit to the right. It's all aimed of course so I doubt that's what you where talking about. A cleverly timed bomb may indeed be a good idea if it's possible, and you don't think you can recover the dream bonus from Mai's items. Edit: Somehow this sentence ended up in the wrong paragraph.

Then the last part, where they drop the dream items, I find that standing in the middle, then moving to the side makes it easier. They kind of aim the walls at you, so if you move over you can go through one at a time. It's very hard to get the dream items though. A cleverly timed bomb may indeed be a good idea if it's possible, if you don't think you can recover the dream bonus from Mai's items.

Unrelated, I actually had a dream about this game last night. I was somehow auto-collecting the stage 6 items at full value. Four hours of Gunbird 2 followed by two hours of MS, and that's what I ended up dreaming about.

It was this, and the last few with the dream items. I just bombed them.

Also I finally got that Reimu 1cc. No deaths up to late stage 4, but I know I could have finished the game without dying as much. Well, whatever, it's a 1cc that reaches my target of 130m. Time to work on Marisa's I guess. And Yuuka's (I did some searching and I guess that's the more accurate spelling) because then it'll be the only one I need to clear this game with all shot types on all difficulties.

Oh, so close. Cleared 0/0 again. I tried to supergraze Yumeko's semifinal thing. It's not overly difficult, but with those stage 6 items on the line I don't think it's worth it unless you're really going all out. It's still ridiculous to die so many times and I could improve it easily, but I'll just move on to the other shots for now. Maybe try to improve this after a break from Reimu's slowness.

And I wasn't able to record this one (not that I would have uploaded it anyway). It started making the game very uncooperative if I tried to record. Hopefully it'll fix (or un-fix?) itself soon, since I'd like to at least get a Mima run up.

Okay, I ended up redoing it again. Here's the other result screen. (http://i.imgur.com/ckjYXPN.jpg) Finished with one extra life.

Also, nevermind what I said about those stage four enemies. If you're right underneath them, you can destroy them before they shoot, even with Reimu. That gets rid of the first wave easily, though you have to rush to neutralize the others like that.

And I found what was up with the recording business. I had Fraps set to record 30fps, but it needs to be 25 for Anex86.

The other screen (http://i.imgur.com/0kWe5HS.jpg), for comparison purposes. The Mai fight was a disaster in this run. The whole stage, really.

I found Marisa much harder to use on this difficulty. You can't use her speed to chase after items as much when the screen is so full of bullets. Reimu's shots actually help keep the screen clear, which is more helpful than speed in a couple places, notably the end of stage 5. I actually had a pretty good Yumeko fight, but the stage itself beat me up this time. I've yet to reach stage 6 with any shred of a dream bonus.

Also, yet another thing to say about those stage 4 enemies. When shotgunning the first ones that appear, Marisa seems to do more damage if you're a bit to the side of them, rather than dead on. I think. It helps kill them before they shoot.

Lunatic - Yuuka

The hilarity of beating my Marisa score with Yuuka. I nearly got into stage 6 at dream max, but died to one of Yumeko's horizontal swords. I think I perfected Shinki aside from one death. She caught me as I was running up to safespot the cheeto lasers. I'm not sure if I want to upload this run, or actually try to improve it. Somehow Yuuka was more fun to use than Marisa.

edit: added video of Shinki battle.

I've noticed too. At least I can successfully change directions during Yumeko's slower 3-way phases like 80% of the time with Marisa instead of 20%.

And here's something where I probably would have scored higher than my Reimu score if I hadn't died with bombs remaining 2-3 times during Yumeko, resulting in a game over when I died trying to reach the cheeto lasers safespot. Regardless, it's somehow higher than your Marisa 1cc, so I'll post it.

Score progression (http://i.imgur.com/xCB1B2Q.jpg)

Died twice to Yumeko, but never bombed, so that was nasty. A death to Alice, a death to Mai, and a death to Shinki's phase just before the cheetos. One bomb in stage 3, one in stage 4 (hard to avoid), and I think the other two were used on Shinki. So really it could have been only one or two deaths if I'd used bombs better. One death in almost every stage is very annoying.

And no recording for this one. I had another good run going earlier but my computer vomited all over it in stage 4, so I decided to stop recording for the next few runs, then got this. I'll try some more Reimu runs tonight and if I don't beat my current score, I'll upload the one I have. I think I'm done with Yuuka and Marisa for now. I'll start Mima either tonight or tomorrow, depending on how Reimu goes.

So it seems I was right. As I thought, your dodging ability is helping you score much higher than I do on Lunatic. I'm still trying to 1cc with Marisa. I'll probably just go with my first Lunatic 1ccs for all the characters except Mima for now.

I was losing so many runs to deaths on the first two stages that I decided to go improve my Normal score to a letter score, to see how much I'd improved from the other difficulties. Stage 5 was a disaster, and so was Shinki, but it's still improved, and might have been higher than my Mima score if it weren't for all those deaths.

Zil - 153,914,430 - C - Replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brQ9XWGC4ME)

I think, if I'm playing really well, I could no-miss the whole the game. Literally every death in this run was extremely stupid. I definitely have a better chance at that with Mima than I do with Reimu, though.

I wonder when this scoreboard will be updated. It's been quite a while.

Terrible. This kind of performance would have gotten me around 110 million as any other character.

Lunatic - Mima
Zil - 162,423,680 - C - Replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVxXXXorWlI)

Well then. A "G score." I was wondering if I could reach 160mil with Mima, and I guess it's fairly realistic. I think I could maybe reach 170, or even 180 with a really good run.

And it does seem that I've finally overtaken your scores in Lunatic mode, Karisa. My advice, if you keep getting killed in the first two stages, is to be less aggressive, even if it hurts your score. Just prioritize not getting hit, and try to do well later. Doing lots of runs with bad beginnings is probably a better use of time, since you get more shots at doing well in the later stages, which is far more important than anything that happens in the early game. Also be liberal with your bombs during boss battles. The damage to the dream gauge is surprisingly minimal, and it's so much better than dying.

That's not the problem. If I don't shoot as many enemies, there get to be more of those randomly fired aimed bullets, and those early-stage deaths are mainly caused by those aimed bullets being fired so close that I don't react to them in time. Well, that, or being surprised by one of those lines of fast large red bullets from the stage 2 midboss.

That's not counting intentional restarts in the first few seconds that I do on any difficulty to make sure I collect enough 51200-value point items to fill the dream gauge before the swarm of ghosts near the end of the stage.

Well, by being less aggressive, I meant staying lower, not shooting less enemies. That's assuming you are, in fact, moving up to get the items with Marisa and Yuuka, and getting hit in the process. I figure you're less likely to get caught off guard if you're near the bottom. Mima is usually better off at the bottom anyway, I think, so it's a lot easier with her. Whatever the case, good luck.

Extra - Reimu
Zil - 160,921,050 - C - Screenshot (http://i.imgur.com/A0cdvG9.jpg)

Extra isn't so hard, really. It's all about learning how much health each phase has, then killing them at the perfect times. It's just a very fun stage, altogether. This run had two deaths. I'm submitting it now since it beats Pdee's Yuuka, but I'll probably try to redo it without dying.

Extra - Reimu
Zil - 178,875,140 - C - Screen1 (http://i.imgur.com/NSqqUWw.jpg) Screen2 (http://i.imgur.com/EmSiv00.jpg)

I forgot to get the cool screenshot with the clear bonus. I believe it was 307 point items this time. Still one death, to Alice's very first pattern, but I didn't restart since I somehow got 99 items from the stage, which is excellent compared to what I was normally getting. I'll probably move on to the other shots now.

Extra - Marisa
Zil - 156,641,500 - C - Screenshot (http://i.imgur.com/tL9j798.jpg)

Marisa is annoying to use. She's basically a weaker Mima in every way. What's very obnoxious, however, is how the missiles can mess up you timing for the bullet cancels. You shoot when you want the phase to end, it survives, then the missiles hit a second later, ending it at the wrong time.

Extra - Yuuka
Zil - 158,692,480 - C - Screen1 (http://i.imgur.com/gdnlcmu.jpg) Screen2 (http://i.imgur.com/tL9j798.jpg)

And oddly enough, Yuuka is actually kind of fun. A bomb to the to card soldiers seems almost unavoidable, but she can somewhat make up for that by killing the midboss faster than anyone else. This run involved yet another death to the purple lasers (could've easily moved over a bit, just didn't think I had to), and I messed up the timing for the second green phase.

Extra - Mima
Zil - 181,041,770 - C - Screen1 (http://i.imgur.com/kUClWx1.jpg) Screen2 (http://i.imgur.com/vIOX0p4.jpg)

By no means am I finished with this. It's only my first run that made it to Alice. I'm posting it because it is, somehow, just barely better then the Reimu score. That's really weird since not only did I finish with 330-ish point items (much better than Reimu's 307) but I had no deaths as well, while Reimu died to Alice's first phase. The midboss bullet bonus was over 2m. I don't remember what Reimu got there but it couldn't have been much higher than 3m.

So where did I go wrong? Surely my Mima score should be more than ~2mil ahead of the Reimu one. The only things I can think of that would have gone differently would be the (minimal?) amount of points you get for each canelled bullet, or something about the value of bombed items from the second and fourth phases. I suppose it's time to start recording these so I can analyze them. I'd have recorded this one had I known I would do so well on my first try.

That 2nd stage final boss first pattern grazing was scary. I remember practicing grazing the red bullets on normal. I concluded it was far too risky for me.

Also i liked various being above boss(or sub-boss) strategies.

Thanks. What's nice about that supergraze is that it's actually easier to get 999 graze on higher difficulties. Since you get more graze from each wave, you don't have graze all of the red ones so closely, and you can play it safe for most of them.

And here's an improvement for my Extra Mima score. I mostly spent today experimenting with getting optimal bullet cancels though. I wrote some big thing about it, but I think it would be crazy to put it all here, so here's a link to it on my tumblr, (http://the-deathray-inside-the-kotatsu.tumblr.com/tagged/Mystic-Square-Extra) if anyone wants to read it.

Wow, that's a lot of detail about Alice. This should be useful whenever I seriously get into MS Extra scoring (which I think I'll do before Lunatic, but I haven't really had the time). Thanks for writing that out.

It may be worth noting that the 4 point items to recover your dream bonus are for Mima. I'm pretty sure the dream gauge penalty for bombing depends on your character's bomb length, and Mima has the shortest bomb.

I think the penalty is also halved when a boss is present, which means bombing for 6+ point items wouldn't necessarily be worth it on the stage portion.
Title: Re: 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square

Alright, I modified it a bit to say that it was referring to Mima, and bombs used on the boss.

And about bombing in the stage, I think it may be worth bombing towards the end. If you don't manage to kill the fairies quickly enough, they start covering the screen with bullets and it becomes much harder to actually collect the items they drop. If you bomb you'll get whatever items where falling that you would have missed, and the dream gauge is refilled almost instantly thanks to the presence of those invincible cards. Then you can run back up above the cards and resume killing the fairies before they shoot and collecting the items more easily. I'll have to try it a bit more. Even if you only end up collecting a few more items at 400k, that's still a better use for it than after Alice's second purple phase.

edit: Progress is slow. Item collection in the stage is almost pure luck. Second phase items are luck. The emulator's cooperation is luck. I keep getting J scores. The stage is fortunately fun enough to keep playing.

Extra - Mima
Pdee - 179,618,340 - C - Replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq4SKK3TKs8)

Average item collection on stage, along with a death. Could have better item collection, in particular when Alice transitions into her first lightning attack; the bomb was poorly timed as well. I see potential for around 185-190mil with this pattern.
Title: Re: 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square
Post by: Karisa on January 31, 2013, 04:06:33 pm
I think Pdee's score may have been deliberately left out due to 10% slowdown. Nereid included my Mima Lunatic score with 6% slowdown anyway, but someone else was updating this when that run was posted.

Oh, and my best Extra Mima score is now like 141m or something. Still trying to learn the stage well enough, which I didn't do when I was trying to learn all the other Extras except SoEW (didn't put that much effort into TD or GFW yet though) due to recording slowdown and the possibility of getting an unexpected unrecorded perfect. I'm not quite consistent at Alice's 6th pattern (I know what to do there, just need practice), I tend to have to bomb the last few rows of card enemies before the midboss, and I can't seem to follow Alice's final pattern when it gets extremely fast (fastest bullets you're forced to dodge through in the series? anything comparable I can think of is either aimed or something like Devil's Recitation that you're supposed to avoid entirely) causing me to end up spamming bombs (usually takes 3) for the last few pixels of health.
Title: Re: 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square
Post by: Zil on February 01, 2013, 06:42:25 am
An important thing to note when using Mima is that she seems to do more damage when she's not directly under the target, in case you hadn't noticed already, since you hit with the shots from one of her familiars as well. It's very helpful for killing the columns of cards more quickly. If you're bombing the last row of them before the midboss, it might be a good idea to bomb right before the row is revealed, so you only take out the side columns. Then the when the last row descends onto the screen your dream gauge will refill instantly, and it should probably be easy to get their items without the side enemies complicating it. Also, I used to have a lot of trouble with Alice's last attack myself, though thankfully it's pretty easy for me now. Her hardest attack for me is definitely the sixth.

Extra - Yuuka
Zil - 167,776,830 - C - Screen1 (http://i.imgur.com/YI5NkeR.jpg) Screen2 (http://i.imgur.com/t3Tqu8B.jpg)

I figured I'd improve my Yuuka score before calling it quits, since I'm now much better at ending the phases at the right times. The deaths were to the second phase (yuck) and the sixth. The bombs were mostly for items, though one was to the cards. As Yuuka, I've never managed to survive that part before the midboss without bombing.

The power of Yumeko grazing. I used the music to determine when to end her 2nd phase, shooting a bit early to be safe just in case her 1st ends earlier than usual. I think reaching 999 should be doable by farming some graze off the aimed bullets in her 3rd and 5th phases, but I haven't yet learned how long those take to time out.

Also somewhat improved Reimu stage 3 route.

And I just noticed this in the first post:
  • Make sure to use default starting settings - that's 3 lives and 2 bombs, and slow mode off.
Quote
Lunatic - Reimu A
Spaz - 5,000,000 - 4
It should say 3 bombs, and the sample should probably have a shot type that's actually valid for this game.

I'll just mention, for maxing the graze counter in stage 5, that the phase with the aimed green needles lasts 10 waves, I believe. I once went through and timed out a few of the more graze-able attacks in the game, just to see how long they last. (For instance, each of Alice's phases shoots 23 waves, I think. I didn't check for the first since that one's probably too risky anyway.) Maxing the graze in stage 5 would be pretty huge, yeah, I never bothered risking it.

And you reminded me of a text file I made to keep track of PoDD scores, though I included every score I could find in existence, not just MotK ones. But yeah, it would be nice to see these updated (and organized a bit better, for the PC-98 games.) I asked about doing it myself a while ago but it seems like Sapz doesn't want me to.

I wasn't satisfied with my best Normal score having skipped the Louise supergraze, so here's an improvement.

It could be better though. 3 bombs, 1 death to the luckgraze. I also missed grazing a few waves on the luckgraze and finished it off at only 500 graze because I was concerned about timing it out, which cost around 2 million.

Decent enough by my current MS Extra survival standards, at least with Yuka. I missed a lot of point items from not noticing I was out of bombs at Alice's 4th phase (and dying when I tried to bomb), though.

This was going pretty well until I died to Alice's 7th phase. Though I'm not sure if my dream bonus was high enough after her 6th phase to affect the point items from her 8th phase either way. Then I overshot her 8th phase and couldn't collect all the point items, not that it really mattered (the correct time to stop is when her life bar is about halfway though the "B" in "Bomb", but I guess I'm not used to Marisa's damage rate).

I think editing the last post is better than making a new post (though you're free to make a new post if you feel like it). The issue is actually if people edit new scores into a post that isn't the last post in the thread.

(Also I may or may not come back to MS eventually-- the simple system doesn't interest me that much anymore. I found it more interesting when it was unexplored, I think.)

Pretty much just posting all the scores I'm sort of satisfied with for now. I can probably improve these, but I will do that later. Actually had some problems figuring out how I should play MS until the dream gauge mechanics started to make some sense to me (at least enough to let me know that recovering isn't completely impossible, but still difficult to do). Until I looked things up, I ended up playing with the misconception that extends were given based on how high you score (I found out later that extends are given for every 100 point item). I think the other problem was that I was trying to fight Yuki, but that was before I figured out that Mai was easier to deal with.

My hard Reimu run was something I did while doing lunatic runs. I couldn't decide whether Reimu's range was something that would help me stage 4 onwards. I ended up sticking with using Mima mostly because of a combination of me generally not liking homing shot-types and that Reimu is a little too slow for me to use. I'll probably try using Reimu again on lunatic later on some other time.

Pretty sure my lunatic strategies could use some work. I think I spent a majority of my time figuring out what kind of route I should take for stage 1. Its probably because I'm too aggressive with my item collecting, but I tend to die a lot during my attempts in stage 1. I can theoretically no-miss no-bomb until stage 4 unless the bosses throw something that is too difficult for me to dodge. Its probably bad for scoring since I'm losing out on graze, but I'm also relying on speed killing strategies for Alice to reduce the changes of getting screwed by something random. Still working on my stage 4 strategies. I think trying to use Zil's approach for some of the stuff kind of helped, but I think my main issue is misjudging the hitboxes on some of the bullets. Yumeko was pretty difficult to get past without losing too much resources. I think I got some rhythm, but trying to misdirect her aimed bullets is pretty scary given how fast they move. Shinki wasn't too bad in comparison, but I'm not too used to the bullet speed during her later patterns. I remember watching a video that makes her lasers easier to deal with so I ended up relying on that mostly because I know I can't dodge lasers that behave like that.

My extra is pretty much a low score. I didn't care about cancelling bullets for point items and the only thing I remembered from one run I saw was that it was safe to time out her last pattern. Long post, but I felt I had to leave some comments. Pretty sure I could have saved myself some time if I didn't decide to put my thoughts down.

Prinny - 71,386,770 - 6 - Screenshot (http://i.imgur.com/bxEECgg.png)

Shinki aside, this run sort of went downhill starting at the stage 4 boss. Stage 5 went sort of decently until Yumeko. I screwed up item collection on stage 6.

For the Dodging Rain Competition, did pour in 60+ or 70+ hours into this, will be improved in either the near future, or the not-so near future. My main hope is to get 150m in this at some point.

Extra - Mima
ZIG - 165,223,460 - C - 1.82% - Video (https://youtu.be/GUjFc7l35rQ)

Also something that happened during the DRC when I was going for hard mode I got a little stressed out a few times; decided that playing another difficulty was a good idea, it seemingly was as I managed to get a 165m run after playing a bit. Will also be improved as I probably will aim for 180-190m for this Extra stage at some point.

Sorry for my extra post here but I kind of found a graze that should make getting max graze in stage 5 incredibly easy: Yumeko graze strat (https://youtu.be/I2A7VyGno5o) if you'd do a few midboss grazes + this (the pattern can be grazed for 7 waves.) you'd get a ton of graze and more than enough for max graze in stage 5, it makes it pretty easy, too. So you could prioritize point item collection much above grazing random blue kunai stage enemies.

Not too sure if I want to post my LNB, since I might want to improve the score it got at some point, so it would feel like a filler to me.

Maybe that I'm quick to ask, but I want to ask for my score I posted yesterday to be added. I saw yesterday that Kirby reposted on the SoEW chat and got his score added back then so it may not've been visible; I'm aware of that. But I'm not sure how long I'd have to wait if I wouldn't ask now.

I typically update the scores each day. Sometimes I miss a day or two though; it seems yesterday was one of those days.

Anyway, I just noticed you've been submitting some scores as "ZIG" and some as "Zigzagwolf"-- which would you prefer?

Those things happen and I'm aware those things can happen since I kind of do update some scoreboards on another forum so I'm aware those things can happen at times, so that is all fine.

Oh, I really should have thought this out before. People tend to just call me "ZIG" and it is my arcadename, but I think "Zigzagwolf" looks neater and is more formal for a forum, so I'll go with "Zigzagwolf" here.

I feel like using a single submission name deserves to be in the guidelines now. It's been enforced for a while but it's a pretty rare occurrence.

Anyway, there have been occasional longer gaps in updating (due to computer repairs or vacation, for example, when I've only had mobile access), but if it's not added by 5+ days later, chances are it was missed. Especially if other newer scores were added.

(Also KirbyComment's reminder (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8095.msg1255635.html#msg1255635) was actually PoDD, not SoEW, and it was a week later.)

I see.. I did look at the SoEW thread yesterday though, I probably saw the wrong thread then.

I've had a duration for a very long time I couldn't even get online at all in which I was not capable of updating my boards, so I honestly do understand the situation, it is not something I saw as bad but my thoughts were it is better to be sure and certain than to be unsure and uncertain.

Some of my new scores, highest score for Reimu and Marisa in the Extra stage so far as far as I am concerned. I want to attempt getting 200M+ with Reimu and Yuuka at some point, as for Marisa, she does not have the same potential as Reimu or Yuuka and that 1MNB run was really strong, but if I didn't die at the final pattern there with her I possibly would have had 190M+? I think that would be my endgoal with her, it is atleast by far more solid than my 170M run.

Also the new highest overall score for Lunatic as far as I'm concerned, I might improve the score a bit further in the near future, lunatic is quite hard to survive well but I still am content with that run for now.

Improvement with Reimu, closing in on 200 Million. I'd be glad if I get that, I got a recording of this run (as the screenshot kind of shows) but it is a bit sloppy, for somereason Bandicam's sound settings really influence how the video will look like even if you don't notice any of such while actually recording.

It's about time I start doing some serious scoring in this game finally. I've attempted this category around a year ago actually, but I didn't really get far with it. This is merely a placeholder though so it will be improved. Hopefully I can do some other Easy categories after and Normal too as long as the game continues to not massively slow down while recording. The 75m run was recorded but isn't worth of a video obviously.

This game is frightening once you make one survival mistake. That happens, and then you'll die many more times. Ironically it doesn't hurt my score that much by the looks of it, at least on Easy.

Strong run, point item collection was a bit less, graze was good, Mai stalling is also an important part. Still 2 misses and some bullet clears were just awful, I'm not planning on improving this soon so hopefully I maybe get to this someday.

This run is pretty godly, I've put in quite a lot of time to get this. My goal was to get 200 million with Reimu but I slightly exceeded that by 2 million, so I'm very happy with this run. New shot record for Marisa, improvement may not be huge over my last score but it took me a while; I've basically added in an elaborate description in my video-- there's some things that could make it better and could probably push this towards about 195m, I don't know if 200m is possible. This run is really good though.
