Kino is... Kind of the odd one out in my list of favourite anime.  It's not loud, particularly colourful, and definitely not nearly as over-the-top as my other favourites.  And yet still... There's just something about it that draws me in.  Actually, if I look at it a different way, the philosophical concepts that run deep throughout the series make it a perfect fit, even if it approaches them somewhat differently than the others.  And I've mentioned it before, but... I just like the idea of going out there and just travelling, with no particular destination in mind.  Just going out there and not stopping until you reach where you're going, not knowing where that place is exactly but knowing that when you reach there, you'll just know you're there.  If that makes sense.

...I am droning on again, so I should probably stop before I go on any further.  Suffice to say, great series, great opening theme that really sets the tone of the whole thing.

Just a few off the top of my head, in no particular order:

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, "Bouken Desho Desho?" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIKRn1dbT28) - We've all heard this one a million times, but the chorus to this song still gives me the chills. Really captures the feeling of longing for and being thrilled by the unknown.

Rozen Maiden, "Baragoku Otome" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D84zLL9y9tg) - This is such a haunting and heartbreaking song, made more so by the fact that it is, for all intents and purposes, the theme song of Suigintou, possibly one of the best villains in anime I've ever seen.

Ika Musume, "Metamerism" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEZUsxe3IBM) - I never suspected that a series this light-hearted would have such a bittersweet closing. It reminds me of the end of summer, vacation ending, saying good-bye to dear friends.

Kuragehime, "Koko Dake no Hanashi" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Zsq6pUDzsE) and "Kimi no Kirei ni Kizuite Okure" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj8RkQxwSTA) - This show really delivered when it came to music, in my opinion. Both songs are tender, funny and endearing.

Haibane Renmei, "Free Bird" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paN2a9y1-Cs) - A pretty bold choice for a theme, having no vocals. But when it comes to a series as startling and original as this one was, it fits perfectly.

Welcome to the NHK, "Odoru Akachan Ningen" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj7LIiy7muA) - What can I say? This song kicks ass. Captures the madness and the mania of the twists and turns our hapless protagonist encounters on his journey out of himself.

MAID EDIT:

Soredemo Machi Wa Mawatteiru, "Down Town" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_d17fAOnrw) and "Meizu Sanjou!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DlPG4M57VE) - The first song is actually a cover from 1975 by a band called Sugar Babe (original here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18aTqit4Ufk)), which I prefer to the cover, but Maaya Sakamoto does a great job of it, too, and her version fits this series well. The second song is just rocking and hilarious.

I always find myself thrusting my fist in the air when it gets to MAKKA NA CHIKAIIIIIII because I am loser like that.

I do not watch very much anime, but I will add what I can.

To this formidable list, I shall add two nostalgia bombs: the OP to Digimon Adventure, Butter-fly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5WUNLFlgR8), and Digimon Tamers' first ED, My Tomorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY0uHEcJPP8).

And since VIVI took Sailor Moon's two OP songs, I will add Sailor Moon SuperS' first ED, Rashiku Ikimasho (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC-qqEhTy4Y). The lyrics are.... a thing, but I always found it terribly catchy.

Moreover, I am also a die-hard fan of Fushigi Yuugi, and actually went out of my way to not only read the... 28 volumes, was it? of the manga, and then proceeded to watch the entire anime, then obsessively hunted down the two OAVs and Eikoden, which is the most amount of hunting for any anime I've ever seen. And then I got into Genbu Kaiden. But during all of that, I picked up some rather nice music to listen to, which I will now share here.

Fushigi Yuugi's OP, Itooshi Hito no Tameni, is fine, but it gets old after hearing it for a while. They should have used the fucking awesome Romance remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cla1lOIl8Ls) instead. Its EDs, on the other hand, are fantastic. Its ED animation in the top right corner was different for every episode; here's episode 12's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjnDFLWV-G4), as well as the full version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20xSGLcXf2I), both of which are wonderful ear worms.

The first OAV's ending is Ashita No Watashi Wo Shinjitai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5XLq-ArnhM) (full version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igEEJ-7eG4k)). I should note here that none of these are really traditional EDs; instead of having some brand-new animation, they're basically montages of Yuu Watase's (amazingly beautiful) art.

The second OAV has Yume Kano Shirenai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N6jwCVQKRU) (full version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWcfcXNKhEg)) as its ED. The 90's brought me wonderful things. This is one of them. It also has Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x49hDGZ0izY) as its OP. I don't like it quite as much as its ED, but Yume Kano Shirenai is really hard to compete with anyway. And FY's EDs had a tendency to be better than the OPs.

And lastly, Eikoden has Chijyou no Seiza (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WnpVlZ8F0A), which is... actually pretty haunting. Even if the main character/villain is the incarnation of distilled bitchiness, I still looked forward to each episode for this reason. (That, and watching her downfall.) Bonus: Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden's video game OP, Towa no Hana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wTDw0PEMw8), which among other things confirms that only Genbu, Seiryuu, and Suzaku get awesome OPs, and Byakko can just go fuck itself until it gets good music for its cast.
